Welcome to Looe

This beautiful fishing town is set in the heart of South East Cornwall. East & West Looe (logh meaning deep water inlet) are built up on the sides of a steep river valley. The river runs between East & West Looe to a beautiful sandy beach to the East and Hannafore to the West (great for rock pool exploring). St Georges Island or more commonly named Looe Island, lies off Hannafore’s coastline. If you have arrived in Looe by car, you will find that there is plenty of parking. Do not be tempted to go down the main street in East Looe trying to find parking, as all spaces down there are residential and the streets are packed with visitors during the holiday season. Free one hour parking can be found along the road in East Looe before the shops and good value council and Looe Harbour Commissioners (LHC) car parking on both the East and West sides of our fine town.

6 Welcome to South East Cornwall

There is a medium size LHC car park just before the bridge on East Looe and the larger Millpool council car park on the West side over the bridge. There is also a smaller private car park next to the Millpool car park near to the amusement arcade and some street parking on West Looe quay in LHC bays. All car parks are very reasonable for a day out, but can be busy. Try not to sit for ages waiting for someone to leave in the harbour car park especially, as this can cause a queue back to the road. Once in town there’s a great day out for all. A great selection of pubs & restaurants, Good Fish & Chips, and a wide selection of shops and cafe’s for Mum & Dad. See page 18 for some great stuff to do on and in the water. Whatever you decide, a day out in Looe will be a day you’ll never forget.

Welcome to South East Cornwall 7

Welcome to West Looe and Hannafore local fishermen and well known for the great folk & sea shanty sessions held regularly. Take a stroll along the riverside in West Looe, and visit the shops on Pennylands. Above West Looe and a short walk or drive is Hannafore sea front with spectacular Sea Views along Marine Drive and a good selection of Cafe’s & Hotels. Dogs are welcome here on the beach, and there are plenty of Doggy Bins along the seafront. Enjoy a Cornish Ice cream or a coffee at the Hannafore Beach Kiosk situated opposite the Tennis courts and Bowling Green, with outdoor seating and great views of the Bay.

Just across the river lies West Looe. This is the quieter side of the town, with its selection of shops along the quay (well worth seeing – take the ferry) and more around Princes Square at the start of West Looe hill, which is just past the fire station. Tasty Corner café is an ideal location to sit and watch the river go by and listen to the locals as they talk about fishing tales from the past. Walk past the fire station and you will find the Jolly Sailor Pub, a popular haunt for

The end of Marine Drive is a dead end for Cars, but the beginning of the public footpath to Talland bay and beyond. This has to be one of the most stunning coastal walks in the UK, but please check current safety guides with the local TIC before setting off, as adverse weather conditions have caused problems with landslides early this year. Hannafore’s coastline is mainly rocky but has some fantastic rock pools for the kids to explore (and shells to collect). See www.looemarineconservation.org for information on ‘Rock Pool Rambles’ that happen throughout the year.

On the beach or in the water. If you love the water, then you’ve certainly come to the right place. Looe has some great things to do, including fishing, sailing, rowing and much more. Whether you want to catch a monster shark, or just a mackerel or two, then the Shark Angling Club on the Quay will steer you right and find you a worthy skipper. Along the Quay, there are boards giving details of Charter fishing trips. There are also speedboat trips and the famous Glass Bottom Boat trips around Looe Island to enjoy, plus regular trips to Polperro. If that all seems a bit too energetic though, why not just take the ferry across to West Looe and maybe back again. All Aboard!

On the beach or in the water. •

Wherever possible, swim at a lifeguarded beach. Go to goodbeachguide.co.uk to search for listings throughout the UK

The beach is great for swimming and sunbathing, with café’s and amenities close by.

There are high rocks to the East of the beach, which are not safe for jumping off. However during the summer, “The Beach Team” offers many things to do for children, including sand castle building, crabbing, sports and much more.

Always read and obey the safety signs, usually found at the entrance to the beach. These will help you avoid potential hazards on the beach and identify the safest areas for swimming.

When on a lifeguarded beach, find the red and yellow flags and always swim or bodyboard between them – this area is patrolled by lifeguards.

Never swim alone.

If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help.

If you see someone in difficulty, don't attempt a rescue. Tell a lifeguard, or, if you can't see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

If you are hiring equipment for a surfsport, try to do so from a member of the Surf Hire Safety Scheme.

East Looe Beach is easily accessible including a beach wheelchair for disabled visitors.

A perfect seaside day out awaits and hopefully a sunny one too!

Talland Bay Halfway between Looe and Polperro lies Talland Bay. With two sheltered sandy and shingle beaches, this is a beautiful spot to relax and enjoy the afternoon. The road to Talland is narrow, so please be courteous as you drive down; there are plenty of passing places. If you have walked to Talland Bay from Looe or Polperro, then relax and stay a while. With both the Smugglers Rest and Talland Bay Beach CafĂŠ providing great food and drink, this ancient smugglers cove will give the whole family something very special to remember. Parking is available along parts of the road and the Beach CafĂŠ. Talland Bay is signposted from the Looe Polperro road near both Tencreek and West Wayland Holiday Parks.

Welcome To Polperro

This ancient fishing village is famous worldwide for its smuggling and fishing history. Running through a steep valley of beautiful cottages, Polperro is quintessentially Cornish, including narrow roads that don’t take kindly to sat-navs! There is a large car park at the head of the village, park here and walk down past quaint shops & fantastic galleries. Get a cream tea and see fishing boats lying in the harbour. If you find the walk too far, there is a mini-tram service taking you from near the car park down into the heart of the village.

Polperro oozes culture & history, visit the The Polperro Arts foundation near the harbour, Gina’s gallery nearby, The Ebenezer gallery near the Crumplehorn, The House On The Props, and the Polperro Museum of Smuggling and Fishing. There is stunning scenery that is viewable from the coastal path that runs on either side of the village. After you’ve taken all this in, why not relax and enjoy a pint and a meal at the many fantastic pubs & restaurants dotted around the village. You won’t be disappointed!

A truly beautiful stretch of Beach. Fantastic views and plenty of amenities dotted all along the coast here. With rockpools the size of swimming pools there are plenty of hidey holes and shaded areas along this beach. A healthy walk down to the sand but the paths are pretty good. WARNING Severe Rip tides affect this stretch and there are parts of Whitsand Bay which are stranded at high tide. Great for surfing, a must visit while here in SE Cornwall.
