Displays & Carpet Bedding

You imagine...we create!

Your ideas are designed, planted and grown on at the nursery and delivered ready for you to install. On delivery, the pre-rooted tiles of plants simply slide out of their trays onto a pre-prepared bed, transforming the bed into a colourful work of art within hours. The displays can also be used for exhibitions as they are delivered in mobile units. The price of an InstaPlant® carpet bed is approx. £135/m2 plus a £200 design fee.

We also design and produce 3D InstaPlant® displays to order. 3D displays of up to 4 metres high can be produced. Each display is fabricated in steel with an internal irrigation system and is planted-up, grown on and delivered to site.

This art form has previously been limited to specialists, but InstaPlant® gives people who would not normally have attempted to create a decorative bed, the chance to have one produced and delivered to be installed with ease. All that we require is a drawing or photo to base the design on. We can also provide individual plants for anyone who prefers to plant the display up in the traditional manner. Carpet Bedding is now available to everyone!

Welcome to Kernock Park Plants “Growing Innovations” 2019 We hope that it will inform, delight and inspire! We’re extremely proud to say that our efforts over the years to produce great plants with service you can trust have been recognised and commended in the highest possible way, by being awarded “UK Grower of the Year” as part of the Horticulture Week Business Awards held in June. We were pitted against some highly respected opposition which makes the award more worthy. It is a well-deserved “pat on the back” for our brilliant team here at Kernock. It’s also good news as far as we are concerned, that we still have room for improvement… we continue to invest in our facilities, methods and product offering. As I mentioned to the team recently, “perhaps perfection is a tall order in this business, but at least if we strive for perfection then we can surely achieve excellence.”

We were incredibly saddened at the end of 2017 to learn of the passing of Mark Taylor, our Business Development Manager. Just after Christmas, he lost a 5-year fight against prostate cancer. As I mentioned at the time, it was testament to Mark’s positive attitude that many who knew Mark might not have even known he was ill. We and Mark’s family greatly appreciate the many tributes left regarding Mark and the raising of over £2300 for Penny Brohn UK, a cancer Charity that Mark supported. InstaPlant enjoyed a great year in 2018. We are pleased that InstaPlant was once again able to help promote awareness for those who were lost in battle and commemorate the end of the First World War. Many InstaPlant displays were produced to be situated around the country, something that simply wouldn’t happen, if we didn’t offer a service to create bespoke, easily installed carpet bedding displays that greatly enhance local environments. “What’s new?” is the perennial question that you might ask…. Well if you look inside the catalogue, there’s a summary on page 4 to 7, showing of all of our new products being introduced through the coming season. There’s some exciting stuff that we might have had an eye on for a few years, during test and trials. The range of new introductions expands right across the categories of Perennials, summer patio/seasonal plants, alpines and succulents. Have a good look through the catalogue and please contact us by phone, email, or other means if you have any questions. As always, we advise to place your orders as early as possible to avoid disappointment and to take full advantage of our quantity and early order discounts that you see in the catalogue and order form.

As I write, there are warnings of hose pipe bans to be in place across the country, which is usually the signal for the rain to start, but the powers that be, seem pretty determined this year to try and ensure that we experience an “old school” summer that I recall from my youth. Let’s see what it brings!

Royalities are variable and are shown on the order form in pence per plant where relevant. Royalty plants can be distinguished by (P) or (VR) and automatically come with labels.

If you happen to read my opening notes from year to year, you would be able to tell that we are a horticultural business based in Britain!..... The reason being that not a year seems to go past without the weather being the headline topic! I have always paid attention to the weather having been entrenched in a family nursery business since I was born. Particularly I recall Dad hating the dreaded winter storms and the damage they can do to polythene and glass structures. I must say, since being more formally involved in the business, I don’t recall one year in the past 20 years that has been similar to another as far as the weather is concerned. I’m not sure we know what a “normal season” is anymore! The positive news is, that it seems that for the majority of the trade, any early losses were recouped during the excellent late spring and early summer months.

New Varieties for the coming season:

This year we have been working unbelievably hard to bring as many new varieties into our range as possible and we are delighted to say that 2019 is shaping up to be a bumper year! In fact, this could well be the best introduction list we have ever announced! We’ll be adding nearly 90 fantastic new varieties into our already extensive range, to ensure that everybody can find their perfect plant. So, what have we added? Well, some of the highlights include a brand new Nemesia, from the Proven Winners stable - ‘Pink Lemonade’. This certainly doesn’t let the side down with fantastic colour and scent. Heucheras also seem to be maintaining their popularity, and we insist on introducing only the very best new ones. So, this year will see the introduction of the eye catching ‘Forever Red’ - a vibrant beauty we simply could not ignore! Also look out for another Proven Winner perennial - Heuchera ‘Wild Rose’, a stunning blackberry coloured beauty that is sure to impress. Those who know us well, will know that in addition to cutting edge new breeding lines, we often introduce old favourites and less wellknown varieties from the past. Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’ comes into this category…. Wonderful sky blue speckled flowers on green foliage with wonderful wine-coloured undersides – no wonder it earned the garden merit RHS award! Look out for additions to our Salvia range, some special finds from the wilds of South America, such as a great cerise pink ‘San Carlos Festival’, but also some brand new breeding from our Proven Winner friends…. Look out for the beginnings of the Salvia Rockin’ series including Rockin’ ‘Deep Purple’ and Rockin’ ‘Fuchsia’. These are more grower friendly alternatives to the traditionally taller guaranitica forms. Hybridised with splendens and some other “magic ingredients” to make a more “stocky” premium, long-lived annual. There’s so much more to see…. Why not take a good look below for a preview of the rest of our 2019 introductions…we promise, you will not be disappointed.

…and that’s not all!... recently we have been in discussions with Thompson & Morgan, a well-renowned and respected breeder of a wide variety of plant genera. They offered us at Kernock exclusive access to their entire Hellebore breeding programme shown on page 53, including the Anemone flowered varieties which have a central ruffle of small petals, pleated like a ballerina’s tutu; the Double flowered varieties, some of which we have sold for years, others completely new; and a selection of wonderful single varieties which directly replace and augment our existing Lady series. We have more varieties to offer than are even catalogued here, so please ask for our anticipated availability. They are all sown and we will see first germination over winter. You will not be disappointed by these long flowering, robust perennials which have to be amongst the best winter flowering plants available! Over the years, we have selected and cleaned some of the best vegetative Dahlia varieties. This series of Verbena was selected for their colour range, large flower clusters and their vigorous, robust nature. They have also demonstrated very good mildew tolerance. The first selections are broad-leaved, the next are "bushy", mound forming and the last are fine-leaved "lace" varieties. The broad-leaved varieties are suited best to container planting due to their upright flowering habit. The fine-leaved varieties, although still upright, are also ideal for container fringes, beds and borders.
