Message from our Board President My initial experiences with CASA came from attending fundraising events with family and friends. Each time I attended a fundraiser, I heard the story of another child whose life was positively affected by CASA and their mission to speak for abused and neglected children in the juvenile dependency process. It quickly became clear to me that I wanted to contribute more to the overall CASA goal of protecting and ensuring each child’s right to a safe, permanent home. My desire to become more involved was realized when I was invited to join the Board.

Being a part of the Finance Committee allowed me to contribute to CASA’s efforts to make sure that every dollar raised is stretched as far as possible. My time with the Executive Committee helped me to understand the intricacies of a non-profit Board; and now my term as President will allow me to further work towards the success of an agency that puts the children of our community at the forefront of every decision made. We can "Change a Child's Story."

I am honored to be a part of this group of hard-working and dedicated individuals who give their time and resources so graciously to such a worthy cause. I look forward to this upcoming year and all that we can accomplish as we work together...."Better Together."

Turning Point Story For a child to end up in the foster care system, there has to have been a multitude of failures along the way. Failures that compound, and can eventually end up in the child being on the receiving end of severe abuse, whether physical, sexual, or emotional. Failures that stem from a person, most often a parent, given implicit trust by the child and shattering that trust beyond repair.

Such was the case for Melanie*. When she was 11 years old, she and her older sister suffered horrific abuse at the hands of their mother and father. The trust in their supposed caregivers was shattered, and they were placed in the foster care system. After such a traumatic time in her life, it would be understandable for Melanie to never trust an adult again; but thankfully Deanna, her CASA, entered her life.

Deanna has been Advocating for Melanie since 2017, and in that time has become a part of Melanie’s story. Someone that she can rely on and can talk to about issues in her life. She even opens up to Deanna about her relationships and how those are going.

During the panel, Melanie stated to the audience that what made Deanna such an important figure in her life, despite only seeing her on a weekly basis, was that Deanna truly listened to her. In the foster care system, a child might go through a dozen different adults in authority positions throughout their time, whether it be social workers, teachers, foster parents or even attorneys. A CASA will follow their child through all of these changes and remain the one consistent, caring adult in their life. By doing something as simple as listening to Melanie when she needed someone to talk to, Deanna managed to foster a connection that Melanie could rely on.

Recently in March 2019, Melanie was involved in a conference for foster youth. Through her involvement in a group at her school, Melanie was asked to be on the Youth Ambassador Panel, where the foster youth identified an adult in their life as an “adult supporter.” Melanie picked Deanna as her adult supporter.

Deanna has been Advocating for Melanie since 2017, and in that time has become a part of Melanie’s story. Someone that she can rely on, and can talk to about issues in her life.

During the panel, Melanie teared up a little speaking about the impact Deanna has had on her life thus far. Melanie will continue on her path through the foster care system with Deanna by her side. Whatever the future holds for Melanie, she will know that she has a supporter that she can lean on and confide in, and who has her best interest at heart. *Name changed to protect identity.
