FOREWORD

BY ASST. PROF. TEOH CHEE KEONG An introduction by Head of School of Faculty of Engineering, Technology and Built Environment of UCSI University Kuala Lumpur In this little ecosystem of architectural education, we know that teaching and learning is not an act of tutors pouring knowledge into the presumed empty vessel of students. Teaching and learning have a symbiotic relationship.

This yearbook is here to record this chemistry, where the tutors put forward their thought with carefully designed project brief, setting out mini milestones for every level of learners; the students then bringing into the design studio their energy and unconventional perspective, to drive the project to such diversities, render them with different depth and layers, where we in return as tutors are also being given a chance to learn and relearn.

This symbiotic harmony is the essential requirement for both teaching and learning, contributing to the common development between tutors and students. Through the presentation of this yearbook, I cannot help but notice how our faculty members have explored multi-dimensional issues addressing our current society, in great attempts to broaden the horizon of us all, giving a meaning to architecture and design in line with our underpinning philosophy – Architecture is not a luxury goods to serve the privilege few but a discipline in artful science to serve a purpose for greater community/common goods.

I look forward to the tradition of this yearbook to continue and I cannot hold back my excitement in anticipating of how we would be able to trace the trail of so many brilliant minds that make us stronger and clearer in our path.

UNIT A

James Lim Chin Wai Unit A addresses urban and architectural conditions in locations undergoing critical change and over the years. Through a combination of research and creative practice, the Unit proposes interventions, which respond to urban challenges and introduce elements of cultural and imaginative vigour. We explore extremes of interrelated scales, from urban geographies through to the immediate a personal, to develop uncommon propositions. In this process, strategies formulate responsiveness to global and site conditions, understanding of scales, architectural sensibilities, as well as structural and material realities, to create social, spatial and time-based habitats and environments.

Sharon Ong This semester, we will explore ways in which conditions of work and inhabitation can be re-established as an integral and synergetic part of urban life. We will look at diverse modes of spatial and social behaviour to be able to develop skills, intuition and judgement, for a vigorous, yet crafted culture of place. The way of designing is hereby directly related to what we do.

Salak South New Village/Kampung Baru Salak Selatan established in 1952, is one of the three new villages within the Kuala Lumpur municipality. The so-called ‘New Village’ was in the Emergency Period from 1948 to 1962. The British colonial government infiltrated the communist ideology in Malaya, and through the Briggs Plan, most of the Chinese were the colonies and were forced to move to the control area and imposed strict controls, including the establishment of fences to restrict village operations, food control and so on.

In order to reduce government spending, the scheme allows residents of new villages to engage in farming within the new village and to allow small businesses and even small industries to achieve self- sufficiency. Since the opening in 1962, with limited government resource subsidies, the villagers in the new villages have obtained resources from the surrounding environment and then developed a unique new village. To gain inspiration and a measure of urbanism, we will research particular conditions of city-ness in Downtown KL. The site and its context, as well as guiding research will set the tone for distinct strategic interventions in a range of scales, from urban through to building qualities and their immanent details. Using urban design methodology, the projects will focus on sited buildings, by invigorating existing and imagining new, to create schemes that are both, sustainable and enjoyable to all walks of life.

Tolerance - to be able to link, connect, and suture the parts together. The studio developed the notion of tolerance as a measure of the articulation of physical details in architecture, as well as programmatically, and in terms of the degree of fit of the architectural proposition into an existing urban context. Tolerance is both a question of material; of technical precision and connected to political and social structures at a wider level.

Participation - to have a share or to take part. It is a form of being together that enables integrative social and spatial processes, and addresses design, planning, decision making, building and management.

To start the main design project of the semester, you will have to intensively explore urban strategy and building scale in paper. Paper collages and models allow a quick repetition and variation of ideas, as well as ongoing adjustments. You will have to produce a series of WORKS IN PAPER, to be able to produce two distinct pieces of work.

Within your urban strategy’s intervention, develop your interventions. For this exercise you could develop a few interventions or only choose one to develop. Interventions such as: +”Supporting program” to foster either one of the existing programme + “Add-on program” on an existing building Have a series of drawings and models visualizing your building scale intervention (1:500 & 1:200) This part is key important in this design stage. Visualizations are heavily dependent on your individual design. The work may build on drawings of existing conditions and may exploit a whole pallet of different and appropriate working techniques (sections, plans, axonometric, perspectives etc. as well as abstract drawings explaining underlying forces).

In today’s 21st century globalization, modern architectural design of dwelling, offices and places of consumption compete in creating the most unique and most groundbreaking designs.

Buildings are no longer evaluated by its function.

The Muse Design Award, for example, considers “that the best architecture shapes the spaces within and without, making a lasting statement that inspires while pleasing the senses, complementing our surroundings and cultural identities.”

As the world becomes more closely connected, the aesthetics of difference which foregrounds identity and locality becomes more prominent and urgent. The architectural history has seen paradigmatic shifts towards more locally embedded design.

Since Frank Lloyd Wright, architects and designers have paid attention to the way buildings blend and connect to the surrounding natural and human environment.

How do contemporary architectures embrace, experiment with, or embody localities and identities in response to the changing global environment.

From now onwards, student’s work should embrace urban, building and detail design in a much focused manner. The work has to be clearly legible and well communicated, visually and verbally.

What is the project really about?

Student needs to be precise and also concise. Thrpugh out the project development, students will all have to work on two levels for the final satges. All projects demand a careful re-visit of site analysis. Simultaneously, focus on chosen location, design and programme. They should all design the project itself.

Bakthiar bin Amir Cities are not an overnight product of intent and development. It grows with time, intentionally or accidentally, some cities grow ‘up’, some grows ‘out’ fulfilling the timely needs of its users and the necessities of its role in the bigger picture.

Many factors affect the growth and the conditions of a city. Densifications and dedensifications, political strategies, individual needs, to name a few that manifest in a timely manner, serving its purpose of its time.

Sequence and Consequence – poses questions of an intergenerational chronology.

Ar. Mohd Hedzril Bin Jaafar . Ar. Bobby Low Kon Huen This semester focuses on an intervention with questions of ‘what it was, what it is and what it could be’ answering to a holistic analysis of its local culture, historical lineage, and the existing relics of the remains.

For a better insight of the context, all of the project applications this semester will be conducted directly and entirely on-site. We will be diversifying the methods of approaching the project collectively and individually.

This includes dissecting of the site into tangible and intangible layers, collocating the dissected layers, considerations of the historical lineage and relics. Interventions will be done inside out, assessing the urban conditions from various inter-related scales.

Hypothetical yet pragmatic, the works are to be developed through an analytical process of drawing, physical and virtual model-making, detailing and a control on the process of building. We will focus on sense of clarity that comes through methodical process and elimination of the unnecessary.

The typological aspects of the main project will defer from each student depending on the outcome of each individual and collaborative studies, focusing on the aspects of inter-generational being. The collective process of approaching this project shall define the formulation and articulation of individual students’ project brief.

URBAN CHARACTER

01 // DISSECTION & COLLOCATION This particular exercise will enable students to dissect, collocate and reinterpret an existing urban condition into a design concept by observing and abstracting contents/ substance within the everyday.

It will also manifest your understanding towards a certain topic of choice for this exercise. Students will progress into the semesters final project with the visual narratives and thoughts developed in this exercise.

Upon completion of the site analysis, students are to focus on key elements / urban conditions of the Bukit Mertajam old town. The urban environment of Bukit Mertajam is a manifestation of its long history, unfolding and articulating an eventful chronology of its ‘story’.

Progressing from the contextual analysis and studies of the site synergetic elements, students are to extract essential qualities that accentuates the characterization of the site through methods of dissections and reinterpretations which will finally be imaginatively recomposed as a reconstructed collocation.

CONTEXTUAL STUDIES 02 // URBAN STRATEGIES

Bukit Mertajam has gone through a long lineage of history and antiquities, with evidence tracing back to 1500 years ago, and greater civilizations from the 1800s.

Throughout the historical lineage, the town has gone through various forms of change and transformation that may be affected by various factors – individual needs, politics, commerce activities, migrations and immigrations etc.

The studio will explore series map-able topics to develop a shareable knowledgebase for the benefit of all students.

To understand the site and it‘s diverse composition of layers, students are to dissect and do a mapping of the assigned topic, in digital format. This map has to be drawn entirely new.

Upon completion of the site analysis, students are to do a conceptual design masterplan expression/ idea / response based on the subject matter of Project 1 and the analysis done in Project 2A. In this stage students will use the information gathered/developed in the earlier projects to formulate their individual project briefing. Ideas are to be developed via sketches, drawings, models, collages, montages and/or computer simulations to visualize the design ideas.

SEQUENCE and CONSEQUENCES 03 // AN INTERGENERATIONAL

Upon completion of Projects 1 & 2, students should have developed their work through an analytical process of drawing, physical and virtual model-making, detailing and a control on the process of building.

Students have focused on a sense of clarity that came through methodical process and elimination of the unnecessary. The typological (and programmatic) aspects of the main project will differ from each student depending on the outcome of each individual and collaborative studies, focusing on the aspects of inter-generational being.

The collective process of approaching this project shall define the formulation and articulation of each individual students’ final project brief.

At this stage, students are to the focus on the design and development of the programs and typologies formulated from the previous tasks. This will be based on the intent developed in task 2B Urban Strategies – Site Planning, responding to the dissected and collocated individual perception of the existing context of Bukit Mertajam.

This stage takes the theoretical design and intent from project 1+2 to the idea development and technical level, where the notions put forward during the initial design stages are further developed and realized into a workable architectural proposal.

The Design Development will include the detailed investigations necessary to fully scope the technical aspects of the project.

This semester, we picked Kinta Valley, Perak which is once famous for its tin mining production during the tin mining rush era (1884-1895); Our specific site for the field trip is the Tanjung Tualang Dredge No.5 (TT5) which is the last tin mining dredge in Kinta Valley. Abandoned heritage buildings that are not conserved well, will either be ruined into further decay or torn down by money-driven capitalists. We question the importance of preserving the Industrial/ infrastructure heritage as historical monuments (relics) that symbolizes the local history and past culture.

Derelict buildings should be viewed as artefacts; that promote cultural heritage, containing memories of the reconstructed landscape. The urgency of preserving, restoring, and celebrating our national historical relic is paramount and needs to be propagated since it symbolizes the local identity. For this semester, Unit F will be divided into 3 themes for investigating different aspects toward the post-industrial landscape: THEME 1 The Architecture of Earth and Materiality To study existing Geological features surrounding Kinta Valley and how does previous human activities and behaviours impact our environmental sustainability and its geophysical.

THEME 2 Cultural Infrastructure and Socio-culture To study the existing utilitarian and cultural infrastructures that form the collaged city of Tanjung Tualang. Cultural infrastructures are referred to the physical spaces that people use to encourage various forms of cultural expressions whether formal or informal that were created by creative communities.

THEME 3 Engineering Industrial Aesthetics To study the importance of Industrial infrastructure that should be preserved as historical monuments (relics) or national building heritage that gives glimpses of the rich industrial past.

Our Unit Design Methodologies and research tools throughout the semester, are through the process of- dreaming, researching, writing, drawing, model-making, prototyping, filmmaking, photographing, collaging, and designing.

DESIGN REALISATION 03 // INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

This semester students are required to design a proposal that aims to value the notion of industrial heritage, adaptive reuse, and conservation.

The urgency of preserving, restoring, and celebrating our national historical relics are paramount and needs to be propagated since it symbolises the local identity.

Abandoned heritage buildings that are not conserved well, will either be ruined into further decay or torn down by money-driven capitalists. Developers tend to have negative perceptions towards derelict heritage buildings as it is more lucrative and cost-saving to demolish and build new developments.

Should history stand in the way of progress?

Or are we going to allow past histories to fade along with the deteriorated buildings?

Menteri Besar Incorporated. (MB Inc) a subsidiary company of Perak state government, has initiated plans to revive and develop the dredge and surrounding site, which includes construction of new shopping mall, terrace housing and entertainment areas hoping to boost the land value of the area.

In Project 3, students are required to be critical in counter-proposing the idea to revive TT5 site, the last tin mining dredge in Malaysia taking into considerations, the earlier research studies executed in project 1 & 2.

As architects, what are the considerations and planning guidelines required in preserving a cultural heritage conservation of Tanjung Tualang Tin Mining No.5?
