Dear booksellers, friends of books, and art lovers, Liebe Buchhändler*innen, Bücherfreund*innen und Kunstbegeisterte, die Herausforderungen der Zeit nehmen nicht ab. Wir sind daher froh, dass zumindest persönliche Kontakte wieder zunehmen und viele Künstler*innen zum Druck in unsere verlagseigene Druckerei nach Bielefeld reisen, um mit uns vor Ort besondere Publikationen entstehen zu lassen.

In Zeiten der Papierknappheit und steigender Kosten bietet unsere eigene Druckerei das besondere Privileg der Autonomie, mit dem wir größtmögliche Verlässlichkeit und die gewohnt hervorragende Qualität gewährleisten können. Dass unsere Leidenschaft für hochwertige Kunstbücher nun auch mit dem Deutschen Verlagspreis 2022 gewürdigt wurde, erfüllt uns mit Stolz und Dankbarkeit.

Der Herbst hält wieder einmal eine Vielfalt spannender Publikationen bereit. Wir freuen uns auf Ausstellungskataloge zu internationalen Größen wie Maria Lassnig und Frank Stella, auf Publikationen zu etablierten Positionen wie Paweł Althamer und Angela Hampel sowie zu jungen Künstler*innen wie Sebastian Hosu und Stephie Braun.

Gleich zwei bemerkenswerte Titel unseres Programms kommen in diesem Herbst aus Frankfurt am Main. Das Weltkulturen Museum setzt sich in der ausstellungsbegleitenden Publikation healing mit den Möglichkeiten für ein postkoloniales globales Miteinander auseinander – ein hochaktuelles Thema, das künstlerisch wie wissenschaftlich beleuchtet wird. Das Jüdische Museum präsentiert vier jüdische Künstlerinnen, die in Vergessenheit geraten sind und deren Werk nun erstmals wieder der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht wird.

Auch freuen wir uns sehr darauf, unsere erstklassigen Fototitel aus diesem Programm auf der Paris Photo zu präsentieren.

Neben dem Jubiläumsband des Aktmagazins THE OPÉRA gehören unter anderem die Fotobücher von Frank Schinski, Jason Langer und Catrine Val dazu.

We are thus glad that at least personal contact is increasing again and that many artists are traveling to Bielefeld for the printing of their books at our in-house printing plant in order to facilitate the production of special publications with us on site.

At a time of paper scarcity and rising costs, our in-house printing plant offers the special privilege of autonomy, with which we are able to provide the greatest possible reliability and the usual excellent quality. The fact that our passion for high-quality art books has now also been recognized with the award of the 2022 Deutscher Verlagspreis (German Publishing Prize) fills us with pride and gratitude.

A diverse range of fascinating publications can once again be found in our fall program. We are looking forward to exhibition catalogues on great international artists such as Maria Lassnig and Frank Stella and publications on established positions such as those of Paweł Althamer and Angela Hampel, as well as on young artists like Sebastian Hosu and Stephie Braun.

Two noteworthy titles in our fall program come from Frankfurt am Main. The Weltkulturen Museum’s publication healing, which accompanies the exhibition of the same name, examines the possibilities of postcolonial, global coexistence—a highly topical issue, on which light is shed from artistic and scholarly perspectives. The Jüdisches Museum is presenting four Jewish women artists who have been largely forgotten and whose work is now being made accessible to the public for the first time.

We are also very pleased to present our first-class photo books from this program at Paris Photo. Besides the anniversary volume of our magazine on nude photography, THE OPÉRA, there are also photo books by Frank Schinski, Jason Langer, and Catrine Val, amongst others.

Maria Lassnig (1919–2014) zählt zu den bedeutendsten Künstlerinnen der Kunst nach 1960. In ihrer jahrzehntelangen Karriere schuf sie ein ebenso umfangreiches wie singuläres Œuvre auf den Gebieten der Malerei, Zeichnung und Grafik, mit punktuellen Exkursen in den (Animations-)Film und die Plastik. Das Zentrum ihres Werks bilden Visualisierungen körperlicher Empfindungen, sogenannte „Körperbewusstseinsbilder“. Ihre akribische Selbstanalyse bekunden auch zahlreiche Selbstporträts.

Helmut Klewan begleitete Maria Lassnig über drei Jahrzehnte als Galerist. Daraus entwickelte sich ein reicher Bestand an Ölmalereien und Papierarbeiten nebst einer Plastik. Vierzig Werke aus verschiedenen Schaffensphasen wurden für die Ausstellung in Berlin ausgewählt.

Maria Lassnig (1919–2014) is one of the most important women artists in art after 1960.

Over her decades-long career, she produced an extensive and singular oeuvre in the fields of painting, drawing, and graphic reproductions, with intermittent excursions into (animation) film and sculpture. At the center of her work are visualizations of physical perceptions, or so-called body-awareness pictures. Her painstaking self-analyses are also expressed in numerous self-portraits.

Helmut Klewan accompanied Maria Lassnig as a gallerist for over three decades. This led to the development of a rich inventory of oil paintings and works on paper as well as one sculpture. Forty works from various creative phases were selected for the exhibition in Berlin.

Frank Stella (*1936) verortet sein Werk nicht allein in der Gegenwart. Abstraktion oder Gegenständlichkeit, Abbild, Zeichen und Ornament, ebenso wie Fragen nach Fläche und Raum stellten sich ihm immer wieder neu.

Die Publikation präsentiert im Kontext der Wiesbadener Sammlung folgende Werkphasen: die frühen, dem Minimalismus zugeschriebenen Streifenbilder, den Aufbruch in den Raum, also vom Bild zum Relief sowie die Verwendung von Ornament und Arabeske. Im Zusammenspiel mit aktuellen Skulpturen des Künstlers wird damit nicht nur die Stringenz seines Werkes, sondern auch die Relevanz seines Arbeitens bis in die Gegenwart belegt.

Frank Stella (*1936) situates his oeuvre not only in the present. Abstraction or representation, simulacrum, sign, and ornament, as well as questions of surface and space have fascinated him anew time and again.

The publication presents the following phases in his oeuvre in the context of the Museum Wiesbaden’s collection: the early works, the stripe paintings attributed to minimalism, the departure into space, and thus from the picture to the relief, as well as the use of ornament and arabesque. In interplay with current sculptures by the artist, not only the rigorousness of his oeuvre but also the relevance of his work until today is thus shown.

Die Publikation erscheint anlässlich der Ausstellung zur Ehrung Paweł Althamers mit dem Lovis-Corinth-Preis 2022 und ist seinen bisherigen Projekten sowie neuen Arbeiten gewidmet.

The internationally active sculptor and performance artist Paweł Althamer (*1967) often works on projects in planned or chance collaborations that attempt to break open socially charged structures. He examines his self-portrait again and again in a spiritual way, free from any concrete religious viewpoints. Althamer broadens the conventional concept of art with unusual techniques, materials, and approaches. Social initiatives significantly determine his artistic program. The publication is produced on the occasion of the exhibition to mark Paweł Althamer being awarded the 2022 Lovis Corinth Prize and is dedicated to his projects so far as well as to new works.

In the monograph with the title Premonition, Miguel Rothschild (*1963) presents a selection of works from his two most recent series. In them, the Berlin-based, Argentinian artist occupies himself with spirits and the apocalypse. The mystically connoted photographs of skies and forests are given a second layer of meaning—both in terms of content and the visual—through the use of burn holes. Here the spirits of the forest ascend between the treetops, there it is a baroque or romantic sky that receives these demonic and at the same time alluring souls. Rothschild’s ambiguous visions prompt us to interrogate our relationship to nature.

Nun kehrt Sven Drühl, der für seine künstlerischen Adaptionen und Remixe bekannt ist, mit seinen neuen Landschaftsgemälden, die auf rein virtuellen Vorlagen basieren, an diesen Ort zurück. Dort, wo künstlerisch seine Laufbahn begonnen hat, zeigt der Künstler Gemälde und Bronzen aus den letzten sechs Jahren.

The first institutional presentation with works by Sven Drühl took place in 2002 under the title Die Aufregung at the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen. The rooms in which the museum presented the then young positions have been used by the Kunstverein Leverkusen Schloss Morsbroich e. V. for many years. Sven Drühl, who is known for his artistic adaptations and remixes, has now returned to this location with his new landscape paintings, which are based purely on virtual models. In the place where his artistic career began, the artist is now showing paintings and bronzes from the past six years.

The book is a hybrid between an artist book and a catalogue raisonné and provides a complete overview of the works created since 2006 by the Berlin-based painter René Wirths. The works are also sorted into groups based on in part formal, in part content-related, and often surprising criteria. Wirths is a painter of things whose pictures, despite their hyperrealistic attention to detail, nevertheless dissolve again into color and abstraction. The motifs depicted are thus robbed of their “authenticity” (to quote Heidegger) and become a phenomenological examination of the things that surround us. The book pursues these examinations and supplements the astounding oeuvre by positing new aspects.

Architectures reappear occasionally through horizon lines and geometrical forms created by Nature. The artistic approach is phantasmagorical and reflects a tormented inner space, which also outlines major current contemporary concerns. Theresa Möller’s book Dis-Nature is an invitation to discover her own Nature and her vision of contemporary painting.

In his new catalogue ballad for space lovers, the artist Sebastian Hosu (*1988) traces his creative work of the past years since completing his master class studies in Leipzig.

The center of the creative work and life of the Rumanian-born artist is the old Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei (cotton-spinning mill), one of the most important artist centers in Germany of our time. Hosu’s pictures are distinguished by an expressive characteristic style, as if created in just one single breath. His dynamic, often flesh-colored forms give rise to the suggestion of bodies and flow into a living natural environment. Whether luminous oil painting or charcoal drawings—Hosu’s pictorial works have a strong physical presence and take viewers along with them on a journey through space and time.

The figure is a constant in the work of Hans Thomann (*1957). The sculptor is interested in the question of how people present and perceive themselves. Ambivalence, just like humor, is one of the artist’s constant companions. In the last three years, the artist Jürgen Heinrich (*1962) has occupied himself extensively with the open forms of fragments. His drawings and pictures are either mimetic contours of a perceived, experienced event or autonomous gestural structures. Es basiert auf einer Serie abstrakter Zeichnungen, die sich von Begebenheiten und Gegenständen der realen Welt ableiten. Wenn auch die Zeichnungen ihre Bedeutung hinter der klaren, reduzierten Linienführung verbergen, bleibt die Konkretheit dieser Vor-Bilder in den Arbeiten präsent.

In der Publikation verbinden sich die einzelnen Zeichnungen zu einer Art Text – einer Erzählung aus dem Unbekannten. Auch wenn wir Schrift und Sprache dieses Textes nicht beherrschen, lässt sich doch das eine oder andere Muster darin erkennen. Damit erwacht auch die Neugier, das Andere, Unbekannte dieser Zeichnungen zu ergründen.

The book by the artist Benno Blome (*1979) is a composition of rhythm, eloquence, and silence. It is based on a series of abstract drawings derived from incidents and objects in the real world. Even though the drawings conceal their meaning behind the clear, reduced line management, the concreteness of these models remains present in the works.

In the publication, the individual drawings are combined into a sort of text—a story from the unknown. Even if we are not proficient in the writing and language of this text, it is possible to recognize one pattern or another in it. This also gives rise to curiosity to fathom the other, the unknown in these drawings.

The fact that artist agencies in New York are familiar with Neumarkt in Bavaria is thanks to the chamber music hall located there. Its exceptional acoustics were what prompted the local businessman Ernst-Herbert Pfleiderer to establish the Neumarkter Konzertfreunde. For over forty years, this association has been organizing series of concerts that are popular with both musicians and audiences. In order to trace the personal connections between artists and friends of concerts, the OSTKREUZ photographer Frank Schinski was commissioned to capture moments of closeness: in the artists’ dressing rooms, on trips, and at the musicians’ homes. This resulted in the creation of a book that provides a unique view behind the scenes of this very famous series of concerts: with pictures that offer all the protagonists a very special stage.

Two things resonate in Tom Nagy’s photographic portraits of icebergs and Antarctic landscapes: the untamable, irrepressible energies of nature and the fragility of its jagged shapes, which are minimalistic and narrative, static and mobile, majestic and delicate all at the same time. Nagy’s photographs enable us to experience this ephemeral nature becoming a picture and thus prevent them from vanishing for good. In his portraits of icebergs, they become ephemeral sculptures, which drift in the solitary silence of the Antarctic waters like artworks, to then ultimately dissolve completely. From the perspective of the photographer, the Antarctic landscape encourages us to contemplate the cycle of life and to sense our own impermanence.

Adriatico ist eine Hommage an den Sommer, an die Urlaubsatmosphäre und an die Fotografien von Luigi Ghirri.

In Adriatico, the photographer Riccardo Fregoso (*1981) seeks out places where he spent vacations in his childhood and youth. For this, he traveled the coasts of the Abruzzo and the Molise, to then focus his gaze northwards to the Marche and southwards to Apulia.

The Adriatic coast, which is an almost heavenly place in Fregoso’s memories, consists in reality of an endless succession of concrete buildings, which were hastily erected during the economic boom in Italy. In his photos, Fregoso captures the region shaped by mass tourism, with all its contradictions and its particular light. Adriatico is an homage to summer, the vacation atmosphere, and the photographs of Luigi Ghirri.

Immer wieder wird das Medium Fotografie selbst befragt, wenn etwa die Mitgestaltung der Bilder durch Algorithmen thematisiert ist oder durch Apps geradezu dreidimensionale Wirkungen entstehen. The publication Floral Works presents four very different series. The medium of photography itself is interrogated again and again when, for instance, the active participation of algorithms in designing the pictures is addressed or when three-dimensional effects are produced directly by apps. The range extends from pictures of the past to minimalist still lifes that link the artificiality of our consumer world with the artificial aesthetics of the hydrangea: “Natural, but extremely artificial, more leaf than bloom, and documented with no superficial symbolism.”

Vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen Flüchtlingssituation erhält das Projekt eine besondere Brisanz. Die Autor*innen unterschiedlicher Fachrichtungen beleuchten die Fotografien unter philosophischen, historischen aber auch bildtheoretischen Aspekten und zeigen, wie verzahnt unser Hier und Jetzt mit der Vergangenheit aber auch der Zukunft ist.

In her work, the photo artist Catrine Val addresses the role of women in diverging cultural and political systems. The project Memory Unsettled is based on the statement of a ninety-fouryear-old woman in which she compares the loss of all her belongings in a flood with memories of the experiences of war in her youth, from which she has never recovered. The vulnerability of our existence, but also the power to believe in the future and to fight for it unreservedly, to create a new feeling of security, is the topic of this publication. The project has obtained a particularly urgency against the backdrop of the current displaced persons situation. Authors from various disciplines shed light on the photographs from the perspective of philosophy, history, or image theory, and show how intermeshed our here and now is with the past as well as the future.

Jason Langer (*1967) lebte von seinem sechsten bis zu seinem elften Lebensjahr in einem Kibbuz in Israel – eine Zeit, die ihn bis heute prägt. Als er 2008 nach Berlin eingeladen wurde, um die Stadt zu fotografieren, begegnete er dem Vorschlag mit Beklommenheit. Er assoziierte die deutsche Hauptstadt mit den Gräueltaten des 20. Jahrhunderts und hielt sie für einen kalten, unfreundlichen Ort. Dennoch sagte er zu und erkundete die Stadt von 2009 bis 2013 hauptsächlich zu Fuß, mit zwei Fotokameras und Schwarz-Weiß-Filmen. Er fotografierte Berlin mit Blick auf die Orte, an denen jüdische Menschen deportiert oder getötet wurden, nahm seine Streifzüge aber auch zum Anlass, seine vorgefassten Meinungen zu überdenken und ein neues Bild des zeitgenössischen Deutschland und der deutschen Bevölkerung zu finden. Indem er die Straßen, die Menschen, die er unterwegs traf, und Bekannte, die zu Freund*innen wurden, fotografierte, verfolgte er die Spuren des Holocaust, des Kalten Krieges und imaginierte die Freiheit und den kreativen Ausdruck der wilden 1920er-Jahre.

Jason Langer (*1967) lived on a kibbutz in Israel from the age of six to eleven, formative years that have shaped him to this day, so when he was invited to Berlin in 2008 to photograph the city, he met the suggestion with trepidation. Associating the German capital with the atrocities of the 20th century, he saw it as a cold, unfriendly place. Even so he accepted, and from 2009 to 2013 he explored the city mostly on foot, with two cameras and black-and-white film. He photographed Berlin with an eye towards places where Jewish people were deported or killed but also took it as an opportunity to confront and update his preconceived notions and find a new narrative of contemporary Germany and the German people. Photographing the streets, people he met on the way, and acquaintances who grew to be friends, he tracked traces of the Holocaust and the Cold War, and imagined the freedom and creative expression of the Roaring Twenties.

Der Essener Fotograf Manfred Vollmer (*1944) gehört zu den wichtigsten Chronisten des Ruhrgebiets. Seit seinem Studium an der Folkwangschule in Essen begleitet er den sogenannten Strukturwandel des Reviers. Darüber hinaus fällt er durch seine Auslandsreportagen auf. So wird er bereits für seine Abschlussarbeit Kirchenfeste in Süd- und Mittelitalien mit dem Folkwangpreis ausgezeichnet. 1979 erhält er den ersten Preis beim World Press Photo Contest mit einer Serie über die Ölpest in der Bretagne. Neben Zeitungen, Zeitschriften und Verlagen sind es vor allem die Gewerkschaften, für die Vollmer über Jahrzehnte arbeitet.

Er begleitet mit großer Empathie die Arbeitskämpfe im Ruhrgebiet und dokumentiert die Menschen an ihren Arbeitsplätzen.

The Essen-based photographer Manfred Vollmer (*1944) is one of the most important chroniclers of the Ruhr area. After studying at the Folkwangschule in Essen, he accompanied the so-called structural change in the region. He also stood out with his coverage of events abroad. He was thus already awarded the Folkwang Prize for his thesis Kirchenfeste in Südund Mittelitalien (Church Festivals in Southern and Central Italy). He was awarded the first prize in the World Press Photo Contest in 1979 for a series on an oil spill in Brittany. In broken holiday album, the photographer Verna Kovanen (*1989) invites readers to accompany her on a journey to the Mediterranean white sand beaches and the holiday resorts of her childhood. The abandoned travel destinations, which were once built to satisfy our need for escapism, today seem more like stage settings caught in a time capsule. The poetic and subtle photographs can be viewed picture by picture or—owing to the leporello form—in a panorama view that extends over nearly six meters. The passport concealed in the book’s cover pocket gives us insights into the artist’s personal life and family history. Memories and imagination, underlying themes in Verna Kovanen’s artistic work, are also prominent in this book.

Reflecting History mit dem Thema Krieg und Frieden und konfrontiert die Betrachter*innen mit der kriegerischer Vergangenheit der Südtiroler Berge. Schauplätze ihrer künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung sind dabei ausgewählte Kriegsgebiete in den Gebirgsmassiven des Hochpustertals. Im Fokus stehen Interventionen zum Gedenken der Gefallenen des Ersten Weltkrieges an der Alpenfront und Performances für den Frieden. Mitunter übernimmt auch die Künstlerin selbst in ihren Foto-und Videoarbeiten die Rolle der Protagonistin. Die Videos sind in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Künstler Thomas Riess entstanden.

In her photo and video project Mountain Pieces. Reflecting History, Sissa Micheli (*1975) deals with the theme of war and peace and confronts spectators with the wartime past of the South Tyrolean mountains. The settings for her artistic exploration are selected war zones in the massifs of Alta Pusteria. The focus is on interventions to commemorate the fallen of the First World War on the Alpine front and peace performances. Sometimes the artist herself takes on the role of protagonist in her photo and video works. The videos were Ausstellungen | Exhibitions: Mountain Pieces.

Bis dato wurden mehr als neunzig Malaktionen verwirklicht, zuletzt jene für die Walküre bei den Bayreuther Festspielen im Sommer 2021. Die 20. Malaktion wurde 1987 in der Wiener Secession realisiert und ist die einzig vollständig verfügbare Malaktion des Künstlers.

Entstanden im Haus unbedingter künstlerischer Freiheit symbolisiert dieser wichtige Werkkomplex den außergewöhnlichen Werdegang von Hermann Nitsch und ist ein unwiederbringliches Zeitdokument mit internationaler Strahlkraft.

Hermann Nitsch, born in Vienna in 1938, is a co-founder of Viennese Actionism, and one of the international pioneers of the Performance Art Movement. This Austrian universal artist’s worldfamous painting actions have made a major contribution to the development of art post 1945.

More than ninety of these painting actions have been staged thus far; the most recent were held at the Bayreuth Festival in the summer of 2021 to accompany a new production of the opera The Valkyrie. Nitsch’s twentieth painting action took place at the Vienna Secession in 1987 and is the only instance in which the artist’s action works have remained fully available.

This is probably Nitsch’s most important integrated work of this kind. It symbolizes his extraordinary artistic development and constitutes an unrepeatable contemporary document which exudes an international radiance.
