Lights of Legacy - 2025 KACF & NLCF Scholarship Book

Page 1

“Each gift is a spark, each student a flame. Together they become the light that keeps our community shining.”

DEAR READER

This book is both a celebration of students and an appreciation. A thank you to donors who have chosen to invest in students and their education by establishing a permanent scholarship fund at our Community Foundation.

On these pages, we offer letters composed and written by students simply saying thank you. If you read the letters, carefully, you’ll see stories of sacrifice and hard work, stories of achievement and pride, with hopes and dreams for their future sprinkled throughout.

We are very, very proud of the students you will read about on these pages. AND, we are grateful for those who have given their hard-earned dollars to fund the vital scholarships, also described in these pages.

We offer these pages with pride, joy and love: proud of our scholarship receipients, joy in their achievements and love for the communities we serve in Southeast Iowa, Western Illinois and Northeast Missouri.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

GERALDINEBOYD

JUNE 2, 1918 - AUGUST 23, 2021

Geraldine “Jeri” Boyd lived a life devoted to others. Through her years as a teacher, her decades of community service, and her unwavering belief in the goodness of people. Born near Farmington, Iowa, in 1918, Jeri began her remarkable career in a one-room schoolhouse, teaching multiple grades and shaping young minds with patience and purpose. She was a natural educator; intelligent, steady, and endlessly encouraging. She saw potential in every student she taught.

Her teaching career spanned 28 years, during which she became known for her excellence and dedication. Jeri was honored as an Outstanding Leader in American Elementary and Secondary Education, listed in Who’s Who of American Teachers, and chosen as a science fair judge for the Hawkeye Science Fair — distinctions that reflected both her skill and her heart for her students.

After the passing of her husband, Marshall, in 1992, Jeri embarked on what she fondly called her “second career” of volunteering. She gave over 14,000 hours to the Keokuk Area Hospital Auxiliary, comforting families, helping patients, and brightening lives with her humor, kindness, and steadfast presence. Her service earned her numerous statewide recognitions, including being named one of Iowa’s 50 Faces of Volunteerism and receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Iowa Hospital Association.

Jeri’s life was one of purpose. Built on faith, service, and an enduring love for her community. Through her teaching, she shaped minds. Through her volunteerism, she touched hearts. Through this scholarship, she continues to inspire — ensuring that those who dedicate their lives to caring for others will always find the support they need to succeed.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

PEGGYDICKEY

AUGUST 3, 1928 - DEC 31, 2015

Peggy Dickey was a woman of intelligence, grace, and quiet determination. Born and raised in Keokuk, she excelled at school and continued her education at the University of Iowa, where she was recognized as the Top Home Economics Student of the Year in 1950. Education shaped her early years, and she carried that dedication into every part of her life, whether as a teacher, a professional, or a mother who inspired her children to reach higher.

Peggy met her lifelong partner, Robert “Bob” Dickey, during high school, and together they built a marriage that lasted more than 70 years. Their early life together was filled with challenges, humble beginnings, long hours of study, work, and the uncertainty of military life. Peggy met each season with resilience and good humor. She later gave back to her community as a teacher, a library board member, and a leader in University Women, all while raising four children with steady love and encouragement.

She was reserved, with a practical wit and a wry sense of humor, and she carried herself with quiet strength. She was also creative, with a gift for music, an exquisite alto voice, and a love of reading and learning that never dimmed. Peggy valued family above all else, and her children and grandchildren remember her as a source of stability, encouragement, and enduring love.

The Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship is a testament to her belief in the importance of education and perseverance. Just as Peggy gave her own family the tools to thrive, this scholarship extends her legacy to Keokuk students who share her drive to achieve, her commitment to learning, and her determination to build meaningful futures.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF ROBERTDICKEY

APRIL 12, 1928 - MAY 13, 2024

Robert “Bob” Dickey’s life was shaped by curiosity, discipline, and a deep love for his community. A lifelong Keokuk native, Bob believed that ideas, and the ability to express them well, could change lives. From his early years as a student leader and debater at Keokuk High School to his career as an attorney, county attorney, and author, he demonstrated the power of words used with clarity, conviction, and purpose.

Bob’s life reflected a remarkable range of passions: from building boats and homes with his own hands, to playing folk guitar, painting, and traveling widely with his beloved wife Peggy. He served his community through public office, helped preserve local treasures like the Grand Theatre, and even captured his experiences in a novel that revealed his wit and love of storytelling.

He was also a man of balance. Hardworking and committed, yet equally devoted to time with family, the camaraderie of tennis, and the beauty of the Mississippi River he called home. Bob’s legacy is one of intellect and imagination, but also of integrity, kindness, and community spirit.

The Robert Dickey Essay Scholarship honors his belief in the written word as a tool for discovery, reflection, and change. By supporting Keokuk students who dare to express their dreams and ideas, this scholarship continues Bob’s lifelong commitment to education, thoughtful dialogue, and a future shaped by creativity and conviction.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

DONALD&BONNIEHOENIG

DECEMBER 30, 1929 - AUGUST 12, 2022

JULY 1, 1929- DECEMBER 19, 2002

Donald and Bonnie Hoenig built their lives around service, to family, community, and faith. Married in Fort Madison in 1956, their partnership was one of steadfast love and quiet generosity.

Donald worked for nearly three decades with the Fort Madison Street Department, where his dedication and work ethic earned the respect of an entire community. His care for others extended beyond his job; he was a devoted volunteer at the Newberry Center, where his efforts earned him the Governor’s Award for Volunteerism.

Bonnie, a proud Fort Madison High School graduate and member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, carried a deep compassion for helping others, especially children. Her interest in supporting those with speech challenges reflected her lifelong kindness and empathy. She found joy in the simple things: friendship, laughter, and the community she loved at the Kensington in Fort Madison.

Together, the Hoenigs lived by quiet example, reminding those around them that service doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful. The Donald and Bonnie Hoenig Speech Scholarship stands as a tribute to that belief, continuing their legacy of care by empowering students who bring comfort, understanding, and communication to others.

“Their lives spoke through action, through kindness given, service shared, and love freely offered.”

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

MOLLYHURLEY

OCTOBER 22, 1983 - AUGUST 22, 2020

Some people bring light wherever they go — and some are the light. Molly Hurley was one of those rare people whose presence could fill a room, lift a heart, and change the air around her. Wild, compassionate, fearless, and fiercely loyal, she lived life with a spark that refused to dim. Born in Keokuk and raised in Warsaw, Molly knew from an early age that she wanted to be a cosmetologist — not just to style hair, but to help people see the beauty in themselves. She became an artist in every sense of the word: behind the salon chair, on a canvas, in film, and in the lives of her friends. Through her salons — The Vintage Vixen and later Maggie Lou’s, named after her grandmother — she created spaces filled with color, laughter, and love. Her work was her art, and her clients were her canvas.

But Molly’s influence reached far beyond her career. She poured her creativity into her community, helping restore the historic buildings in Warsaw, organizing events, teaching painting classes, and sharing her joy with anyone lucky enough to know her. Even during difficult times, like the pandemic, she found new ways to create — painting, filming, and finding beauty in chaos.

Her favorite songs were loud, defiant, and full of energy — “Rebel Yell,” “What’s Up,” and “Firewoman.” They reflected her perfectly: unapologetic, passionate, and full of life. To her friends, she was a firewoman — strong, bold, and bright. After her passing in 2020, her closest friends and family came together to ensure her light would never fade. With the Keokuk Area Community Foundation, they established the Molly Hurley Memorial Scholarship, giving students the opportunity to chase their dreams and embrace their individuality — the same way Molly did every single day.

Her favorite saying was simple, but it captured her spirit completely: “Stay Weird.”

Through this scholarship, that message continues — a reminder to live authentically, love deeply, and never dim your light for anyone. She didn’t just bring color to people’s hair, she brought color to their lives.

To Whom It May Concern, I truly appreciate being selected for this scholarship, as it will not only lessen the financial burden of college attendance for me, it will also lessen the burden of my parents. I wish that I lived in a time where college tuition was realistic to pay by yourself, however when I received my Financial Aid offer from UIUC, it was astonishing. Even after all scholarships (excluding this one), grants, discounts, federal work-study programs, etc. were applied, I need to pay a little over $14,000 per year. I am eligible to get just over $10,000 per year of Federal student loans, but that would leave $4,000 for me to pay on my own. Most likely, a majority of that cost would have fallen to my parents, who, while aren't living paycheck to paycheck, couldn't have found a way to spend that kind of money without loans. With this $2,00 scholarship, it cuts down on the cost enough that I hope to be able to pay for it myself, or at least minimize the amount that my parent have to take on. Many Thanks, Aaron Greenhlage

Hello, Thank you so much for your more-than-kind scholarship that you have awarded me. I am beyond grateful to have been chosen, and I will proudly honor Mr. Lawrence Matteson with this generous support. When I received this scholarship, I was immediately surprised to read the description. I live in Denmark, Iowa, but I grew up in the bottoms—fishing and hunting—and to know that’s where Mr. Matteson was from was such a pleasant surprise. This world feels so small sometimes, and learning that he was also a Fort Madison High School graduate made it even more special. I’m currently studying secondary education with the goal of becoming an English teacher. After I complete my associate’s degree at SCC, I plan to transfer to the University of Northern Iowa in the fall of 2026. My long-term goal is to come back to this area to teach and stay close to my family and community. I love this area, and I’m so grateful to be proudly carrying on its legacy. Thank you again for your generous scholarship. I am incredibly grateful, and I promise to use this money to further my education and achieve my academic goals. I truly appreciate that you chose to invest in me, and I hope to make you proud. Have a great day, and thank you again so much!

I am writing to thank you for this generous scholarship. I was very excited, and I was very surprised when I saw that I was selected as a recipient of the L.W. Matteson Scholarship. Throughout my whole life, I have worked on our family farm. It has taught me many character traits with raising cattle and learning how to grow crops. I have always had a strong desire for farming, and I am currently studying for my drone license to fly the spray drones in the agricultural industry. Living and working on our farm has taught me hard work ethic and dedication to our operation. As many farmers like me love to do, I also enjoy spending time in Mother Nature. I have had a strong passion for fishing and deer hunting throughout my entire life and believe in land conservation. That is another reason why I am proud to accept the L.W. Matteson Scholarship as it is interesting to me all the things that Mr. Matteson accomplished in his lifetime. Once again, thank you so much for your generosity. The award money will help me pay for the tuition at Southeastern Community College this fall. It will allow me to focus more on school, even with being in the field for harvest. I hope that someday I can continue to help others like you have done for me. Sincerely, Colby V. Booton

To Whom It May Concern Thank you for awarding me this scholarship. I will use this money for my classes and the supplies needed to complete them. This financial support also opens up more opportunities for me to grow academically and stay focused on becoming the best student I can be within my major. As I near the end of my college journey, I’ve taken time to reflect on how much I’ve learned and how far I’ve come. I’m currently majoring inAgricultural Education, and this scholarship helps relieve some of the financial stress that comes with balancing tuition, books, and the tools I need for hands-on learning experiences. Because of your generosity, I can dedicate more time to my coursework, student teaching experiences, and leadership opportunities within agricultural organizations on campus.Agricultural Education is more than a major to me—it’s a passion. I’ve always known I wanted to be involved in agriculture, but it wasn’t until I experienced teaching and mentoring others through FFAand classroom experiences that I realized how important it is to pass that knowledge on. My goal is to become a high school agriculture teacher, where I can inspire students to pursue careers in agriculture, understand the food systems around them, and build leadership skills through programs like FFAand SAE.Throughout my time at Iowa State University, I’ve been fortunate to work with incredible mentors and be involved in real-world educational settings. Whether it’s helping students with livestock projects, planning community outreach events, or designing lesson plans for the classroom, every experience continues to build my confidence and skill set. Receiving this scholarship affirms my efforts and motivates me to keep striving for excellence in everything I do. Your support helps me continue on this path with confidence. It not only assists financially but also shows me that others believe in the work I’m doing and in the future I’m working toward. Scholarships like yours are incredibly meaningful because they allow students like me to focus on learning and growing, rather than worrying about how to afford the next semester. Thank you again for your generosity and support. I hope to one day give back to students in the same way this scholarship has supported me. With your help, I’m one step closer to walking across the graduation stage and stepping into my own classroom—ready to teach, inspire, and give back to the agricultural community.

To Whom It May Concern, I greatly appreciate the scholarship you have awarded me for a second academic year. Your continued support means a great deal to me as I continue my journey through a very difficult program. In an already super stressful environment, managing money and making sure I can pay for college is super stressful. This scholarship matters a lot to me because it allows me to focus on my exams, homework, projects, and finals instead of worrying about how to pay for my next semester of classes. With the ever increasing cost of college I am increasingly appreciative of every scholarship I receive, but the Matteson scholarship holds a special place in my heart. Not only is the money life changing, but the personal touch of a personal phone call to let me know I received the award meant the world to me. With this scholarship I was able to complete a large amount of personal goals I had for my freshman year. I was able to run for and obtain a position as dorm President, and I got a position as one of the three Inter Residence Hall Association Representatives for Helser Hall. Without this scholarship some of those goals would have fallen short. Once again I am very thankful to be selected again for the matteson scholarship, and I hope I can look forward to your continued support as I continue my academic journey.

I plan on earning a degree in computer aided design (cad) for my future job. I currently am an intern at brockway in Burlington and I am doing cad work there. I’ll probably be working there after scc cause it’s a really good job. But overall thank you so much for this scholarship. I really am happy that I’m going into college knowing I have people supporting me and helping me achieve my goals. I will be forever grateful thank you.

Dear Matteson Family, I hope you're all doing well. I wanted to take a moment to thank you sincerely for your continued support throughout my time at the University of Iowa. I'm currently in my junior year studying mechanical engineering with a design elective focus area, and your generosity has made a huge difference in my academic experiences. Your support has helped me more than I can fully explain, and not just financially. Knowing that I have supporters from my hometown keeps me motivated and reminds me that there are people who believe in what I'm working toward. That belief means a lot and has pushed me to keep giving my best in everything I do. The design side of Mechanical engineering is something that I have found a great amount of passion for. I enjoy being able to express my creativity, problem-solving, and technical skills. Because of your generosity, I’ve also had the chance to get involved outside of my own classrooms. Last semester, I applied to be a teaching assistant within the department of mechanical engineering here at the University of Iowa. I am currently a TA for Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Design (IMED) and am responsible to hold weekly office hours for approximately 125 students. This has been a whole new experience for me; however, it has been nothing but helpful to my teamwork and communication skills, which are crucial skills as a soon-to-be engineer. This experience has not only been exciting and fun, but it has also helped me grow professionally and personally. Your support has also helped reduce the financial strain on my family, which I’m extremely grateful for. It’s allowed me to focus more on my studies and less on worrying about how to afford the large financial burden of obtaining a bachelor’s degree. That peace of mind has made a big difference in my overall well-being and academic success. As I look ahead, I’m excited to see where my future career will take me throughout the world. I’m especially interested in working on sustainable, innovative solutions that make everyday life better for people. I hope to be able to support students the way you’ve supported me one day, as I have seen firsthand just how large of a positive impact it can have. Thank you again for everything. I truly appreciate your kindness, encouragement, and generosity. Your support has been a key part of my journey, and I’ll carry that with me as I move forward. To Whom It May Concern, Thank you for choosing me as the recipient of the 2025 Renewal Matteson Scholarship for the upcoming school year. I am incredibly honored and grateful to be selected for this prestigious scholarship, and I sincerely appreciate your continued support of my education. My name is Cody Messer, and I am from New London, Iowa. I currently attend Iowa State University, where I am majoring in Animal Science and International Agriculture. Over the past year, I have remained actively involved in the agricultural community through both my coursework and extracurricular leadership roles. I currently serve as the Southeast State Vice President of the Iowa FFA Association, where I have had the privilege to represent students across the state, plan district & state-level conferences, facilitate leadership workshops, and advocate for agriculture and agricultural education. This role has strengthened my public speaking, organization, and leadership skills while allowing me to give back to the organization that shaped my passion for agriculture. At Iowa State, I’ve also been heavily involved in Collegiate Cattlemen, Block and Bridle, and Swine Producers Advocates. These organizations have helped me grow professionally and stay connected to industry trends, while also giving me the chance to network with peers and ag professionals from across the country. Through these opportunities, I continue to learn and grow as a young agriculturalist, building toward my goal of one day returning home to continue my grandfather’s legacy on our family farm. My passion for agriculture began with 4-H and FFA, where I showed livestock, participated in leadership events, and judged livestock at contests across the Midwest. These experiences not only helped shape my career path but also built a strong foundation in responsibility, communication, and service. From judging in national competitions to leading workshops for younger FFA members, I have always believed in investing in the future of agriculture. Receiving this scholarship plays a vital role in helping me pursue my goals. It lightens the financial burden of college and allows me to focus more deeply on my studies, leadership roles, and preparing for a future in the animal agriculture industry. I am excited about what lies ahead and remain committed to serving the agricultural community in every way I can. Thank you again for your support and generosity. Reegyn Scott first year recipient

Graduate of Central Lee High School

Attending Southeastern Community College

Major: Arts & Sciences Nursing Prep

Hello, My name is Reegyn Scott I am very thankful that I won this scholarship. It will help me so much by continuing college and helping pay for college since I want to be a nurse and will start nursing school in a couple of years. With starting my first year of college this year this will definitely help out a lot with paying for the first year. I just graduated high school last year and am attending SCC as a freshmen this year. The program that I am going into is nursing. I have always wanted to be a nurse and I have heard from a lot of people that SCC has a good nursing program. So hopefully in a few years I can start that program year and start nursing somewhere. My plans after SCC is to become a nurse somewhere and start working at a hospital as either a pediatric nurse in a clinic, or a LPN in the clinic. I have always liked helping people so I figured that nursing would be a great fit for me to pursue. I also like kids so it is a little hard for me to decide which one I want to be. Thank you L.W Matteson, for awarding me this scholarship. It really does mean a lot to me and it will help a lot with paying for my first year of college. It will hopefully also help with the nursing program. Thank you again.

To Whom It May Concern, My name is Bethany Shane, and I am now a second-year vet student at Iowa State University. I have very much appreciated your help through my undergrad, and now, 2 years after my bachelor's degree, I am thrilled to have your assistance as I continue my dream of becoming a veterinarian. Your generous support during my undergraduate years has helped me save money for my doctorate degree, as well as provided funds for wet labs, educational field trips, and textbooks. During my first year in vet school, I took 41 credits worth of science courses and enjoyed every bit of it. I was able to practice physical exams on cattle, horses, dogs, and cats, and learn how to give vaccines and implants. This next year will start to feel more "doctorly" as I dive headfirst into diseases, parasites, pharmacology, and surgery. I cannot express my gratitude enough for your generous scholarship, assisting me through school for 4 years. I will continue to make you proud and work on being the best vet I can possibly be. Thank you for all of your help!

Hi, I'm Gage Stucker and I want to thank you for selecting me for this generous award. This scholarship will help me greatly by allowing me to save money for other important things later in life and give me more of a head start into my farming career. Receiving this award means a lot, and I truly thank you for it. I've lived on a farm all of my life and loved every bit of it. From driving tractors to taking care of livestock and just being out in nature, I've always enjoyed it. After graduating from SCC, I plan to help my dad on our farm full time and hopefully one day run it myself as I am the sixth generation on our family farm. While at SCC, I plan to study in Ag Business, that way I can learn some of the basic sciences of farming like plant, soil, and animal science, while keeping a focus on the business side of things. I will then take that knowledge and new ideas back to our farm. Again, I want to thank you for giving me this generous award to help me pursue my dreams.

My name is Hailey Wick, and I would like to say the biggest thank you to L.W. Matteson. This award will help me pay for my education. I will have less financial pressure, and I will have more time and energy to put into my studies to become an even better student. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my livestock, my family and I and raise and show both dairy and meat goats. Most of the time, you will find me either in the barn or going to an open dairy goat show. I am currently employed at Wineinger's Country Feed and Supply in Burlington. I assist customers in finding the best feed for their animals, how to provide the best care, and in purchasing their goods. I am entering my second year at SCC, where I am majoring in animal science. LAWRENCEW. MATTESON IN

LOVING MEMORY OF JANUARY 3, 1930 – OCTOBER 18, 2023

The Matteson Scholarship exists because of the extraordinary generosity and vision of Lawrence W. Matteson and his wife, Marilyn. A man of humble beginnings, Lawrence worked the family farm and honed his skills as an innovator in machinery and marine construction, ultimately building L.W. Matteson, Inc. into one of the nation’s leading dredging and marine construction companies. His determination and ingenuity were unmatched.

After selling his company, Lawrence and Marilyn chose to “experience the joy of giving while living.” Their philanthropy touched many lives: major gifts to Mayo Clinic, local hospitals, and especially to students in Southeast Iowa through scholarships in technical, health, and career programs. Since 2012, hundreds of students have pursued their dreams because Lawrence believed in second chances and overlooked potential.

In May 2025, the Keokuk Area Community Foundation posthumously honored Lawrence with the Eichacker Award for Philanthropy, recognizing his extraordinary commitment to education and community. His legacy is measured not just in programs funded or scholarships awarded, but in the lives forever changed by his generosity.

Lawrence’s life reminds us that true success is not only found in innovation and business achievement, but in giving back—lifting others up to pursue opportunities they might never have had otherwise.

This book, and the futures of every student within it, is dedicated to the enduring legacy of Lawrence W. Matteson.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

JULIEA.O’CONNER

SEPT 25, 1943 - APRIL 19, 2025

Julie O’Connor lived a life rooted in joy, compassion, and an unwavering love for others. She believed that happiness was something you could build—by surrounding yourself with the people and things that made life meaningful. To her family, she was the heart of everything; to her friends, she was a loyal confidante; to her students, she was a teacher whose lessons extended far beyond the classroom.

Born in Keokuk, Iowa, Julie grew up in a close-knit family. From an early age, she was curious about the world and eager to see more of it. After graduating from Keokuk High School, she headed west to attend Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, California, where she earned her degrees in Sociology and Early Childhood Education. It was there she met Mike O’Connor, her lifelong partner and love. Their marriage would span 56 years, marked by adventure, laughter, and enduring devotion.

Julie’s calling was education, and she lived it fully. She taught in California schools, later founding Little Angels Preschool & Childcare Center after returning to Keokuk. To the hundreds of children she guided, she was both a teacher and a source of comfort — gentle, patient, and endlessly encouraging. She believed every child deserved to feel seen, safe, and inspired to learn. Outside the classroom, Julie shared her gifts through music, faith, and family. A talented vocalist, she lent her voice to the First Christian Church Choir and countless community productions. She had a passion for fashion and creativity, and she found joy in the simple pleasures of life

She faced life’s challenges with grace and courage, always steady, always giving, always loving.. Her legacy continues through her family, her students, and the Julie A. O’Connor Scholarship, which supports aspiring teachers who will carry forward her passion for nurturing young minds. Through them, her light endures, bright, beautiful, and full of heart.

Dear scholarship committee and donors, I am incredibly grateful to be selected as the recipient of the Eric Pardall Memorial Scholarship. Your generosity is truly making a difference in my life, and I want to thank you for investing in my education and future. This scholarship has lifted a significant weight off my shoulders. Knowing that part of my college expenses are covered means I can focus more fully on my studies and involvement on campus, rather than worrying about how I will afford tuition. My long-term dream is to return to my community and serve others through healthcare, and your support is helping me take those first critical steps. Beyond the financial relief, this scholarship has given me a sense of encouragement. It tells me that others believe in my potential, and that means more than I can put into words. It motivates me to work even harder, stay focused, and make the most of every opportunity college has to offer. Thank you again for your kindness and support. I hope to honor your generosity by succeeding in school and eventually giving back to students the way you have given to me. With much appreciation, Noah Swigart

LOVING MEMORY OF APRIL 30, 1970 – SEPTEMBER 20, 2019

ERICPARDALL IN

Eric Pardall was passionate about the trades and his life revolved around it. A lifelong Southeast Iowa man, when he wasn’t working maintenance at his job, he was working on a project that required special skills at home or on the farm. Eric saw the value in these skills and promoted them to countless others. He saw the importance of the healthcare industry to the people in our communities.

As a devoted family man, Eric worked hard to support his own daughters to get through their education programs. He knew the financial difficulties many face in the dream that is their education. His family takes comfort in knowing he would love to see that others are prospering and entering the fields that he believed in on his behalf. Eric had a strong work ethic. He believed in showing up every day and giving your best. He ate, slept, breathed, and bled work. However, he also knew the importance of family, of balance, and they always came first.

Eric saw the potential in these fields. Now his legacy lives on in his family and in the lives of every student who receives this scholarship. It is a tribute to his determination, his work ethic, and his belief that opportunity should be within reach for all who are willing to put in the effort.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

MIKEROACH

AUGUST 20, 1951 - AUGUST 6, 2022

Mike Roach lived his life by a simple creed: work hard, keep your word, and build something that lasts.

A proud graduate of Fort Madison High School’s Class of 1969, Mike went on to serve 20 years with the Iowa Army National Guard’s 224th unit before building a lifelong career as a respected craftsman and business owner. Through M/R Construction, he spent more than four decades improving homes, restoring community spaces, and mentoring others in the trade he loved.

Mike’s legacy can be seen in both the structures he helped build and the lives he shaped — from the Tri-State Rodeo Pavilion and the Fort Madison Saddle Club Arena to his role coaching youth basketball and volunteering throughout the community. Whether serving as Beer Chairman for the Rodeo or teaching someone how to measure twice and cut once, Mike brought honesty, humor, and heart to everything he did.

He was, as friends often said, “a man of his word.” His handshake meant commitment. His voice carried conviction. And his lessons — about craftsmanship, family, and integrity — continue to resonate with all who knew him. The Mike Roach Building Trades Scholarship ensures that his tools of wisdom and hard work are passed forward, inspiring students to build not only careers, but character.

Amy, Jacob, and Jena, I want to sincerely thank you for selecting me as a recipient of the Jerry Stukerjurgen Memorial Scholarship. Your support means so much to me—not just financially, but personally as well. Over the years, you all have been a steady source of encouragement, and I’ve always felt uplifted knowing you were cheering me on from afar. Without the support I have received from you all, I would not be this far into my academic career or pursuing my DVM. I will be graduating this spring with my Bachelor's degree in Animal Science with a Swine Production Management Certificate and will be starting the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program at Iowa State University this fall. Your generosity helps ease the financial burden of that next step, but even more than that, it reminds me how many people have believed in me along the way. Thank you again for believing in me and continuing to support my goals. Your support means more than you know as I move forward into this next chapter.

JERRYSTUKERJURGEN IN LOVING MEMORY OF

AUGUST 29, 1965 - JUNE 10, 2022

Jerry Stukerjurgen lived his life the way he worked his land, with care, integrity, and devotion. Born and raised in Southeast Iowa, Jerry grew up with a love for agriculture that became both his livelihood and his legacy. After earning his degree in Animal Science from Kirkwood Community College, he dedicated his career to farming and comanaging Quality Plus Feeds in St. Paul, where his leadership and work ethic helped the business thrive.

Faith and family were at the heart of everything Jerry did. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Jerry’s life revolved around the people he loved most. He found joy in simple moments, watching his children’s games, lending a hand to neighbors, and spending time outdoors.

Jerry’s dedication extended far beyond his home and business. He served his community faithfully through St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Houghton Knights of Columbus, and Houghton Fire and Rescue, where he was a first responder and past fire chief. Those who knew him remember his steady presence, his kindness, and his willingness to step up whenever he was needed.

The Jerry Stukerjurgen Memorial Scholarship honors a man who believed that hard work, faith, and community were the pillars of a meaningful life. His spirit lives on in the students who will carry forward his values, cultivating not only the land, but the promise of tomorrow.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF

ROSALYN&PAULWILKERSON

NOVEMBER 14, 1922 - JANUARY 29, 2025

JULY 29, 1926 - MARCH 10, 2001

Rosalyn “Rosie” and Paul “Pete” Wilkerson built a life defined by love, partnership, and a deep devotion to their community. Married for more than fifty years, they were true companions in every sense, raising a family, building businesses, and giving generously to the city they called home.

Rosie and Pete’s story began in a whirlwind of laughter, Lebanese food, and joy, a celebration so grand it was featured in Life Magazine and broadcast live across Iowa. But beyond the charm of that day, the true story of their marriage was one of partnership, generosity, and purpose.

Pete was a man of vision and purpose. A University of Iowa graduate, World War II veteran, and civic leader, he dedicated his life to service. Through his work in local industry, his role in shaping Fort Madison’s development, and his vision for Old Settlers Park, he left a legacy that continues to enrich his community.

Rosie, the twelfth of thirteen children in a large Lebanese family, brought warmth, creativity, and joy to all who knew her. A talented artist, gardener, and performer, she had an eye for beauty and a heart for people. Her home was always open, her table full, and her laugh unforgettable. She found joy in simple mornings overlooking Old Settlers Park, a view she cherished so much she dedicated a memorial there.

Together, Rosie and Pete embodied grace, generosity, and purpose. Their legacy lives on through their family, their enduring contributions to Fort Madison, and the Wilkerson Family Scholarship—honoring two lives that continue to inspire others to lead with love and give with purpose.
