MISSION USAID’s mission is to end extreme poverty and promote resilient, democratic, secure and prosperous societies around the world.

The Kenya and East Africa Mission is one of the largest in the world and comprises three operating units – Kenya, Somalia and East Africa. We support priority Presidential and Agency initiatives, such as the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), Global Health Security, Feed the Future, Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), Global Climate Change, Power Africa & Trade Africa, and combatting wildlife trafficking.

Improving the quality of life for people in Kenya, Somalia and throughout East Africa

USAID helps Kenyans achieve the goals outlined in Vision 2030 and implement their constitutional reform agenda, with a focus on the successful implementation of devolution.

Our programs reduce the burden of preventable diseases, such as HIV/AIDS and malaria, and promote healthy families through investments in maternal and child health, family planning, and water and sanitation.

We are helping to brighten the future of Kenyans by supporting a national earlygrade reading program and enriching social, economic and civic opportunities for youth.

Our agricultural efforts are helping boost farmers’ yields and incomes.

We also support the sustainable use of natural resources that underpin development by expanding access to clean energy, addressing the causes and effects of climate change and combatting wildlife trafficking.

USAID promotes regional integration and coordination throughout East Africa, and provides assistance across national borders. Our work with regional organizations, such as the East African Community (EAC), helps them design and implement effective solutions to development challenges.

We work with governments, civil society and the private sector to address cross-border conflict and counter violent extremism, protect communities from infectious diseases, and promote agricultural development and increased trade.

We help vulnerable communities gain the knowledge and skills to manage recurring shocks, such as drought, that are growing more frequent and more intense each year.

The Food for Peace Office (FFP) and the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) provide both humanitarian and development assistance in Kenya, Somalia, and elsewhere throughout East Africa.

FFP provides food aid during emergencies, and OFDA helps countries prepare for, respond to, and recover from humanitarian crises by providing a wide range of services, including health care, sanitation, shelter and emergency relief supplies.

SOMALIA

USAID increases Somalia’s stability by fostering good governance, supporting economic recovery and reducing the appeal of extremism.

Our programs are helping to build effective and accountable government institutions that make public finances transparent and encourage delivery of public services. We facilitate collaboration between local governments and the private sector to accelerate economic growth, increase investment and generate employment across Somalia.

With other development partners, USAID is strengthening health systems and service delivery, focusing on making quality reproductive and maternal and child health and nutrition services accessible and affordable. We also expand access to quality secondary education and create opportunities for youth to be productively employed and engaged in local government.
