Kenyatta National Hospital hosted a group of surgeons on a mission to transfer skills and knowledge on how to improve chest surgery in the country.

The surgeons were led by Dr. Diego Gonzales Rivas, famed for creating a single-port video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) technique.

The procedure involves the use of a tiny camera placed on a Thorascope and other surgical instruments that are inserted into the chest during surgery. The Thorascope then transmits images of the chest to a monitor that guides the surgeon through the entire procedure.

Dr. Rivas was accompanied by two other Thoracic surgeons from Germany and South Africa.

The team was in the country for a two-day engagement with surgeons from KNH and the University of Nairobi.

Five patients benefitted from the venture that was overseen by Dr. Simeon Nderitu, a Thoracic Surgeon at KNH.

Dr. Nderitu in an interview with Newsline expressed delight at having the surgeons in the hospital terming the master class in VATS as a major milestone.

According to Dr. Rivas, the technique has several benefits: decreases Post-Operative pain, guides the surgeons on the procedure easily and fast, reduces the risk of infection, less bleeding, shortens the recovery time for patients and poses fewer complications during and after surgery.
