President’s Perspective Greetings!

After a very successful 2017-2018 academic year, we are excited as we prepare for what will be an even greater year ahead. Many changes on campus — new professional school partnerships for our students, renovations of athletic fields, enhancements to our food service offerings and structure, new faculty and staff members, and more terrific events for alumni and friends of the College — augment the experiences of our students and the entire Wesleyan community.

With all of these changes, certain aspects of Kentucky Wesleyan College remain the same. Our commitment to faith-based education with an emphasis on critical thinking will never be altered. Now more than ever, the world needs principled citizens with high-level problem-solving skills. Kentucky Wesleyan has always produced graduates who fit this description, and we always will.

We will continue to focus on the unique talents and gifts of each student, so they will leave our College prepared to change the world in personalized ways. We will never allow our students to be “processed” as though they are merely products of an “academic assembly line.” Kentucky Wesleyan College will always individualize the education each student receives.

Transforming Lives through The Rogers Foundation

An enthusiastic group of students arrived on the Kentucky Wesleyan campus in August of 2016. They hailed from Las Vegas, and they shared dreams and goals for solid futures and successful lives.

Their arrival is rooted in the lives of a storied and beloved family in the College’s history. Eighteen members of the Rogers family, including Luellen Pyles ’44 (19232014), have graduated from Wesleyan, and that history goes back to the College’s earliest days in Millersburg. Fast forward to the Wesleyan campus in the fall of 2018, when a total of 37 students will benefit from the generosity of The Rogers Foundation.

The Rogers Foundation was founded by entrepreneur and philanthropist Jim Rogers (1938-2014) and his wife, Beverly. Rogers was the son of Wesleyan graduates Frank Rogers ’36 and Lucille (Savage) Rogers ’37, who through his family connection to the Wesleyan campus, recognized and appreciated the value of a Kentucky Wesleyan education.

In October 2015, The Rogers Foundation announced awards of over $10 million in scholarships over the next decade to college-bound students from Southern Nevada to Kentucky Wesleyan, and the first students began in the fall semester of 2016.

“We have an amazing relationship,” remarked Michelle Sanders, director of finance and administration at The Rogers Foundation. “The Wesleyan Way is more than a

saying on a T-shirt. It is a way of life, and it is about unity and family.”

Sanders described the scholarships as a rare opportunity for students with financial need to obtain a quality education in a warm and welcoming environment. “I love Owensboro and the small-town feel, the beautiful campus, and the friendliness everywhere I go. I’m glad our students are experiencing this. They are getting a strong start in life at Wesleyan, and it all started with the family connection.”

President Barton D. Darrell reflected, “We have a special relationship, and we love welcoming some of Nevada’s best and brightest to our Wesleyan family each fall. They are transforming our campus, and through the power of our partnership, we are helping transform their lives.”

Rising junior Silvey Benson, an English major, arrived at Wesleyan in August of 2017. “I thought I would be nervous,” she remembered, “but I felt comfortable immediately. The campus is so friendly and welcoming.” She explained that she met President Darrell when she took a tour as a prospective student, and she found him to be encouraging and interested in her as an individual.

welcoming 14 new Rogers’ Fellows in August, who will join 23 returning scholars. “We share something valuable with The Rogers Foundation — a passion for quality education,” said Pittman. “They are wonderful to work with, and we have a powerful partnership that will impact lives for generations.”

Scott Kramer ’87, vice president of executive initiatives and retention, and his wife, Penny (Mills) Kramer ’86, enjoy a unique relationship with the Rogers’ Fellows. “I can’t say enough about the commitment and generosity of The Rogers Foundation,” he shared.

“The Foundation funds trips throughout the academic year for the Rogers’ Fellows, and Penny and I enjoy being

their tour guides.” They have traveled to a number of cities in the South and Midwest, and visited historical sites, entertainment venues and enjoyed beautiful scenery. “From Nashville to Louisville to St. Louis to Memphis and lots of other places, these trips have certainly enhanced their educations, and Penny and I will never forget it.”

Silvey Benson looks forward to returning to campus in August.

“I needed to be on small campus,” she shared. “The transition would not have been so easy at a large university. I’ve gained confidence, and I’ve changed. Wesleyan is good to me and good for me.”

“When I am on the Wesleyan campus,” reflected Rev. W. Glenn Sowards ’53, “I feel that I am standing on holy ground.” Rev. Sowards shared his memories of Wesleyan at the weekly chapel service on April 11 before the dedication of the renovated Campus Ministries office in memory of John Mark Sowards, the grandson of Glenn and Charlotte, who passed away Nov. 5, 2003.

“When I graduated, I had a diploma in my hand, but I had far more in my heart and in my mind,” he continued. “I left Wesleyan well-equipped for life and preparation for the ministry.”

Four decades later, Shawn Tomes ’94 faced a low point in his life while a Wesleyan student. A football player, he was injured at the end of the first season and could no longer play. “Athletics was my identity, and I went through a tough transition period.”

“I met my future wife — Marcia (Everly) Tomes ’94 — and her family and church family became the loving community I needed,” he continued. “They loved me for who I was and not for who I felt I wasn’t. The roller coaster highs and lows I experienced as a student fuel my ministry today because I know our students need a community of faith.”

Tomes became director of campus ministries the summer of 2016. “I had returned to the place that had given me so much, and I had the opportunity to give back in a way I would never have thought possible during my years as a student,” he shared.

The renovated Campus Ministries office and patio area provides an attractive, welcoming space. “Our students can relax in a comfortable environment and find a way to plug in,” explained Tomes. “Our mission is to serve, love and relate, and we do that in all kinds of ways.”

From the weekly chapel service on Wednesdays at 12:12 p.m. to Stories (evening times for testimonials from students and community members) to The Gap (an evening time for worship and prayer), students take part in many opportunities to express and grow their faith.

Tomes emphasized that the Christian experience is community experience. “It’s not something you do alone. The Bible shows us how to love and support one another and reach out to others,” he shared. Over 50 people from various churches in Owensboro support Wesleyan through taking part in Campus Ministries services and events, and they pray for the College on a daily basis. Worship in the Grove takes place each semester, and in April, members of 14 churches took part in the service. “It was a cool night and a big, warm group,” said Tomes.

Students have reached out to help address needs in many ways. The Wesleyan Kicks shoe project has supplied over 800 pairs of shoes to local schools in collaboration with the public schools. Students and local church partners remodeled five cabins at Loucon Camping and Retreat Center (a ministry of the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church) and through the build-a bed project, they built 14 twin beds for community children who don’t have beds. Homecoming and Fall Family Weekend will emphasize service with alumni, families and the community invited to help build-a-bed on Friday, Sept. 28, with a goal of 28 new beds for needy children. A student ministry team provides pulpit supply to churches in need.

Lydia Jay ’19, from Morganfield, Ky., shared that her involvement in Campus Ministries has helped her let go of fear and focus on being a servant. “I was hesitant and nervous about getting involved, but Shawn encouraged me to step out and serve,” said Jay. “Now I want to be an instrument, not in the spotlight, but serving in the background where I’m needed. My trust and faith have grown, and my life has come alive.”

“I became very involved in Campus Ministries my junior and senior years because I wanted a family on campus, and I found it,” said Paige Dixon ’18. “We have all been so supportive of each other, and that has made such a difference in my life.

Shawn is a servant, and he lives it. His example will always be with me.” ”One of the most effective ways to experience Christian community is through small groups for support and prayer, and we will introduce small groups for those who are interested in the fall,” said Tomes. “Campus Ministries is all about building relationships — first with Christ and with each other — building foundations and making disciples — and then those disciples go and do the same.”

Nadia Wilkes ’15

Wesleyan Star Takes the Stage on FOX-TV’s “Showtime at the Apollo”

“Music is my life,” reflected Nadia Wilkes ’15, “but I never expected a captive audience at Olive Garden.”

Wilkes always had a captive audience at Wesleyan, too. A member of the Kentucky Wesleyan Singers, she remembered the College with gratitude. “The Music Department was, and still is, a family to me,” she said. “They pushed me in a loving way, and they encouraged me. We were always truthful and supportive of one another. My professors, Dennis Jewett and Paul Oakley, were the best. It was quite an experience.”

Wilkes graduated from Wesleyan with a bachelor of music degree and went home to Pleasanton, N.J., after college to care for her mother, who passed away in December of 2015. Since her return to New Jersey, she has given voice lessons, done substitute teaching, appeared in musicals at Stockton University and been a server at Olive Garden.

One evening a few weeks after her mother’s passing, while belting out “Happy Birthday” to an Olive Garden customer, she got big applause from a nearby table. “You should sing at the Apollo,” observed the enthusiastic onlooker. “I have a friend who is a TV producer, and I want you to get in touch with her.” Wilkes followed through, and signed up online to audition for “Showtime at the Apollo.”

“I kept thinking of my mother as I went through the red tape of the four-month audition process,” explained Wilkes. “Just a few weeks before her passing, she had told me I needed to sing on stage.” The process included submitting videos of herself singing various songs, and finally, six months after her mother’s death, Nadia was headed to the world-famous Harlem venue to perform.

“A part of me didn’t want to do it,” said Wilkes.” I was still grieving deeply and in a hurting place.” She knew the reputation and tradition of Apollo audiences — that she might be booed from the stage. “I was very emotional, and it was all very dramatic,” she remembered. “They told my story before I appeared on stage.”

Wilkes opened the show, and described the crowd as really hyped up. She performed “Bust Your Windows,” a hit by Jazmine Sullivan, the same song she performed several years before at Wesleyan’s annual K-Dub Idol.

“I walked off the stage, and completely forgot how I sounded. I had lost myself in the music,” said Wilkes. “But I do remember the standing ovation and the love and the hugs. It was quite a rush.”

“I’ve watched the video of her performance over and over,” remarked Associate Professor Dennis Jewett, “and I loved the way the crowd reacted to her. There is no way to teach what is her unique, innate style, and I’m very proud of what she learned at Wesleyan. I celebrate her spirit.”

Wilkes placed second, but hopes the TV appearance will open doors to a career in music. She will return to Owensboro later in the summer. “Owensboro quickly became my home when I was a student,” explained Wilkes, “and my brother will be a Wesleyan student in the fall, so I’m coming home to Owensboro to be with him. It’s a good place to live, and it’s close to the Nashville music scene.”

Careers: Mike is an attorney with Michael K. Bishop & Associates, PSC, and Cathy is a paralegal at English, Lucas, Priest & Owsley, LLP. Tell us about your family.

“We have a son, Keith, a 2011 graduate of Belmont University in Nashville with a degree in music theatre. He lives in New York City, where he pursues a singing career and owns a balloon business.”

You have been loyal annual donors for many years and have left a provision in your estate for Wesleyan. Why? “Kentucky Wesleyan was life changing for both of us. We often discuss that we were afforded outstanding educations, experiences, and most importantly, friends, all of which have forever shaped our lives. Because of what we were given, we feel very strongly about our annual support of the College, and of including Wesleyan in our estate planning. It’s the best way to say ‘thank you.’”

Tell us about your careers in the legal field and your engagement in the Bowling Green community.

Mike: “I am primarily an insurance defense attorney and have done a great deal of trial work. I am honored to have served as a board member for the Bowling Green Independent School District since 2000. I also sing in the choir at State Street United Methodist Church and teach a Sunday School class, probably much to my classmates’ surprise.”

but I wanted to go where I didn’t know anyone. I knew it would help me grow up.”

Cathy: “I transferred to Wesleyan from Western Kentucky University after spending a weekend on campus with my friend and eventual roommate, Cheryl (Spaulding) Grieb ’79. I felt God tugging at my heart to make the change. The fact that the weekend was pure joy didn’t hurt matters either. I broke the news to my parents that I was leaving a scholarship at Western to come to Wesleyan and they said, ‘We’ve always wanted you to attend Kentucky Wesleyan.’ Who knew?”

Who had a significant impact on your lives and careers during your Wesleyan years?

Cathy: “I have worked as a paralegal for 37 years. As a volunteer, I am vice chair for the Commonwealth Health Corporation Board of Directors, parent company of The Medical Center at Bowling Green, and also serve on the hospital board. I love working with the Bowling Green Independent School District, Kappa Delta Sorority and as a lay leader at State Street United Methodist.

I have fond memories of serving on the Kentucky Wesleyan College Alumni Association Board of Directors in the 1980s, including time as board president.

“For both of us, Dr. Lee Dew made such a difference in our college experience as a professor and friend. We met each other in one of Dr. Dew’s classes and were good friends, but didn’t start dating until a year after graduation. Dr. Dew had the most unusual tests. He once created an essay question in a history/ economics class referencing the old television series, ‘The Jeffersons.’ The questions was something like this — ‘What does it mean in the show’s theme song to finally get a piece of the pie?’

We have recently mourned the loss of our friend, Dr. Dew, as he passed away in May of this year, but we are grateful for his love, wisdom and guidance in our lives.

“Over the last year, I have helped interview applicants for the inaugural class of 30 students who will begin classes this fall at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine-Bowling Green.”

“We were involved in student government and the Greek community, with Kappa Delta and Sigma Alpha Mu opening many doors for us.”

Why did you attend Wesleyan?

What are your impressions of Kentucky Wesleyan today?

Mike: “I attended a college fair in Louisville during high school, learned a little about Wesleyan and liked the idea of a small college atmosphere. Most of my friends were headed to UK,

Over one hundred family members, former students, friends and colleagues celebrated the career of Dr. W.L. Magnuson at the Owensboro Country Club on April 28 with shared memories and expressions of gratitude. Dr. Magnuson retired at the end of the spring semester after 49 years as a Wesleyan chemistry professor.

Thanks to many generous contributors, the Magnuson Scholars Program will provide scholarships to chemistry students in perpetuity.

A total of $281,250 has been raised to date, exceeding the $250,000 goal.

The accelerated 3+4 program will allow students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a Doctor of Pharmacy with one less year of coursework, allowing them to enter the workplace sooner.

The partnership comes on the heels of the Early Assurance Program launched by Wesleyan with the UK College of Medicine in July of last year.

New Alumni Association President Sam Taylor ’97 became president of the Kentucky Wesleyan College Alumni Association on June 1, 2018. He succeeded Dr. BC Childress ’05, who served as president the last two years.

Taylor, the banking center manager and assistant vice president at Old National Bank in Owensboro, has served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors since 2016. He previously was director of development for the United Way of the Ohio Valley and was a senior district executive for the Shawnee Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

“I am honored to serve as president of our Alumni Association and plan to continue the momentum that has been generated from the hard work and commitment of our fellow alumni and College leaders,” Taylor said. “I look forward to engaging my peers and lengthening the reach of our alumni outreach efforts while continuing to grow initiatives, such as the Panther Career Ally Program.”

Taylor graduated with a BA in mass communications and a minor in business administration. He was also a four-year letter winner for the Panther football team. An Orlando, Fla., native, Owensboro became home after the impact Wesleyan and the city had on his life. He and his wife, Leigha, have two children — Kiersten (12) and Reece (5).

Basketball Alumni Day For a second consecutive year, basketball and cheerleading alumni were welcomed back to the Owensboro Sportscenter for Basketball Alumni Day in February. This year’s celebration included the special reunion of the women’s 2013 NCAA Tournament team and the 50th anniversary celebration for the 1968 NCAA College Division Men’s Basketball Champions. Both teams were recognized during the afternoon at the Sportscenter and were joined by President’s Circle members for a post-doubleheader reception at Bar Louie in Owensboro.

Class Notes Roy Pickerill ’75, the College’s sports information director emeritus and special assistant for college relations, was inducted into the Great Lakes Valley Conference Hall of Fame in May. Pickerill’s service at Kentucky Wesleyan has spanned 46 years — 29 as the Panthers’ sports information director. His tenure of 35 years is one of the longest for an administrator in league history. He was the Conference’s second SID from 1980-83 and was recognized in 2014 as the GLVC Thomas Kearns Service Award recipient. He has earned many other honors during his career, including the prestigious College Sports Information Directors of America Warren Berg Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of sports information in 1998.

He was also inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 1999 and received their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. Pickerill retired from his campus SID post on Dec. 31, 2016, and continues to be an integral part of the Wesleyan family through his alumni engagement efforts. Roy is also a member of the Kentucky Wesleyan College Alumni and Athletic Halls of Fame.

Matthew Ruark ’09 was promoted to director of admissions at the College in April. Previously the associate director, Matt’s time in Admissions has been dedicated to serving students, improving processes and approaching each day with a student and institution-centered focus.

“Matt works tirelessly to help move the Admissions Department forward,” said Vice President of Admissions and Financial Aid Jeremy Pittman. “He has recently taken on additional administrative duties including transfer recruitment and managing the student ambassador and STAR programs.”

While pursuing a degree in political science at Wesleyan, Ruark served as president of the Student Government Association for two years, was named to the prestigious Order of Oak and Ivy and worked in the Development Office. After graduation, he served the College full-time as assistant director of development from 2009-2011 prior to a four-year stint as director of alumni relations.

“Matt’s passion for his alma mater is unmatched,” Pittman said. “I have no doubt he will continue to use that passion to move this department forward for years to come.”

1963 Sally (Magruder) Standiford and husband John celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 16. Sally is an AOPi alumna, retired educator of over 30 years and a lifetime supporter of the College. Her son, Charles “Chuck” Standiford ’92, and her daughter, Holly (Standiford) Jones, also attended Wesleyan.

1971 Seretha (Summers) Tinsley was recognized in the U.S. House of Representatives during Women in History Month. U.S. Representative Darren Soto of Florida honored Tinsley and shared her many contributions to community, profession and family.

1984 Steve McFarland released his first book, “A Glory Denied: The Story of the 1967 Owensboro High School Football Team,” in celebration of the team’s 50th anniversary in 2016. Steve is retired from the Owensboro Public Schools and lives in Owensboro with his wife, Lisa.

1993 Tom Weber was promoted to the rank of first sergeant by Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas Carter in February, and now serves as assistant district commander in Evansville.

1996 Kelly Frank was named news director at CBS affiliate WTSP in Tampa, Fla., and began her new career endeavor

in June. Frank joined WTSP from WBNS in Columbus, Ohio, where she was director of news and digital content. Under Frank’s leadership, the WBNS news team was recognized with numerous awards, including four regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, 32 Emmys, 19 Society of Professional Journalists Awards and 32 Associated Press Awards. Her previous experience includes serving as executive producer of U.S. operations at CNN.

1997 Tim Payment was promoted to colonel in the U.S. Army in February. He is completing a year as a military fellow at Tufts University Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Boston.

1998 Kent Lewis joined the Student Affairs staff at the new University of Kentucky College of Medicine-Bowling Green campus in May 2018.

2002 Matt Hughes was the recipient of a pair of first place awards and two third place awards at the annual Kentucky Press Association Conference in Lexington in January. The first place awards were for “Investigative Journalism” for a series of articles surrounding the arrest and prosecution of a local police officer and “Best Sports Special Section” for a preview of Webster County High School Fall Sports.

Hughes has served as managing editor and general manager of The JournalEnterprise newspaper in Webster County since 2014. He was a member of the WKWC Executive Council, a yearbook staff member and a two-time prior of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity during his time at Wesleyan.

Wesleyan Welcomes Drew Cooper as 23rd Head Men’s Basketball Coach “Whatever it takes — do it.” That philosophy drives new head basketball coach Drew Cooper, whether he is coaching, parenting or playing tennis. Cooper arrived on campus on April 2 after a successful five-year run as head coach at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky. The Saints’ record was 94-46 during Cooper’s tenure with two straight conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. His peers named Cooper the 2016-17 and 2017-18 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Over the past two seasons, the Saints posted a 45-13 record.

“Drew is a tremendous fit to lead our men’s basketball program,” said Director of Athletics Rob Mallory. “He’s a Kentucky native and has been coaching in the Commonwealth for the last 11 years. Coach Cooper has an extensive background in Division II as both a player and a coach. Plus, he is a winner.”

Prior to Thomas More, Cooper was assistant coach at Bellarmine University from 2007 to 2013, where he helped the Knights to a record of 152-41. Four out of his final five seasons at Bellarmine included appearances in the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen, including a Final Four appearance in 2012, and Bellarmine’s first National Championship in school history in 2011.

The Cooper name is synonymous with tennis in Louisville, his hometown. His uncle once beat tennis legend Arthur Ashe when they were tennis juniors. Cooper’s dad is a long-time tennis teaching professional. “My parents have always worked hard, and they excelled professionally,” he remembered. “They set a great example for me.”

A graduate of Assumption College in Worcester, Mass., where he played basketball, Cooper played professionally in Ireland, Germany and Switzerland for two years.

“I love to win,” shared Cooper, “but what is most important to me is preparing my scholar-athletes to go into the real world to be successful husbands, fathers and employees. I want them to know how to behave, how to find ways to get things done and how to be respectful of the competition.”

Coach Cooper and his wife, Tamara, have been married almost seven years and have twin boys, Grant and Owen (6) and a daughter, Delaney (12).

Panther Athletics Independence Bank Contributes to New Field at Steele Stadium Thanks to the generosity of community partner Independence Bank, Steele Stadium will feature a new turf surface in time for football season. The bank made a sizable contribution to the project, which will provide a significant upgrade to the facility.

Cody Bridges Lands on Pair of All-Region Teams

Junior Cody Bridges, a center fielder on the baseball team, brought home a pair of post-season accolades, being named First-Team All-Region D2 Conference Commissioner’s Association (D2CCA) and Second-Team All-Region National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). This marks the first All-Region honors for Bridges and the first Panther selection to the NCBWA All-Region teams since 2015.

Junior Outfielder Meredith Daunhauer was named to the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association Midwest Region All-Region following another sensational season. The honor comes on the heels of her selection as National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Google Cloud Academic AllDistrict by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and first team All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference recognition.
