President's Perspective Dear Kentucky Wesleyan Family, I hope you have all been able to remain safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I wish to thank all of you who continue to support the College during this time. Your care and donations are crucial in helping KWC move forward in a positive fashion and ensuring we have the resources needed to educate our students at the highest possible level.

Although it often appears that COVID-19 dominates every discussion and plan, we have been constructing strategies for Kentucky Wesleyan College's future. After spending several months meeting with the campus and larger Owensboro communities, we have drafted Three Pillars to lead the College into its next phase.

The Pillars, and our plans to achieve the goals of each of them, will help solidify the institution's policies and ambitions.

The College must take a close and objective look to determine in which direction we should be moving, if we are already moving along that pathway, or which steps need to be taken to make this journey feasible.

They will help the campus and larger community focus on the institution's goals and purposes. Too often, what an institution is attempting is lost in a myriad of stories and extraneous planning. Work on these Pillars will concentrate our thoughts into one strong voice as we solidify KWC's future.

The Pillars will also help articulate a story around which donors and friends of the College can rally to ensure the hopes and outlook of the institution. Rather than reaching out to donors with a plethora of small projects, we will establish an overarching plan for KWC, allowing others to see where resources will help benefit each aspect of the future of the school and our students.

This is a unique time for our nation and the world. It remains an exciting time at KWC. I look forward to working with each of you as we continue our path toward an ever brighter future.

COVID-19

An Amazing Response to the Panther Promise

As the spring semester began on Jan. 8, students were already planning spring break trips and summer jobs, while seniors anticipated the activities of their final semester.

No one was talking about social distancing, masks or "Healthy at Home" protocols.

On March 7, Dr. Mitzel sent his first communication regarding COVID-19 and announced the College's first cancellation – a student trip to Central Europe in May. When students returned from spring break on March 9, campus leadership was rigorously preparing for a potential disruption in activities.

The COVID-19 Response Team worked closely with the Green River District Health Department and the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities, as well as following directives from Gov. Andy Beshear's office, to respond quickly to the fluid situation, while providing a safe environment and quality education.

On March 12, Dr. Mitzel announced that all classes would shift to remote delivery on March 18. He said of the COVID-19 Response Team in his April 1 update, "We face new challenges multiple times a day, and you have never flinched in carrying out the responsibility laid before you . . . to ensure the safety and well-being of the campus community . . . and you have continually worked under high stress conditions in a collegial and professional manner."

He praised faculty for their Herculean effort and students for their strength and flexibility in transitioning from traditional to remote teaching. Staff worked expediously to provide memorable experiences for the students through virtual events, including the Order of Oak and Ivy induction ceremony, Honors Convocation, Student Achievement Awards and Commencement.

Before the spring semester ended, the COVID-19 Response Team began planning for the fall semester. Once the decision was made to open the campus for the return of students in August, preparations began and the Response Team worked diligently on the Phase III Reopening Plans in Academic Affairs, Admissions, Athletics, Facilities and Student Services and Safety.

Students returned to campus in small groups to alleviate large crowds, and the campus community committed to the Panther Promise to take responsibility for one's health and help keep Wesleyan safe from the spread of COVID-19.

Classes are being taught in a hybrid fashion to allow students to attend face-to-face classes part of the week and online classes the remainder of the week.

Six weeks into the semester, Vice President of Student Affairs Rebecca McQueen-Ruark observed, "Our campus community has been amazing at living up to our commitment to the Panther Promise." Plans are underway for the spring semester, which will begin on Jan. 13.

The campus community is tremendously grateful to alumni and friends for your concern and prayers. We could not meet the challenges of 2020 without your support.

Three Pillars, One Voice Strategies for a Strong Future

President Thomas Mitzel first visited Kentucky Wesleyan on an early fall day in September 2019. He was impressed with the beauty of the campus but knew that what he saw was simply a collection of buildings. The heart and soul of any campus is the students, and they, along with the larger campus community, define the character and personality of an institution.

He remembers the sense of excitement and anticipation he felt upon his arrival in January – a new campus, new faces, new challenges and new opportunities. Only weeks later, the COVID-19 pandemic upended the world. "I have always felt that a community's attitude about facing adversity dictates whether the group moves forward together or cowers in a corner and stagnates," he remarked.

The three Corinthian columns in Hocker-Hall Grove were originally a part of the administration building at the Winchester campus and stand as a constant reminder of Kentucky Wesleyan's proud heritage. The College was founded at Millersburg in 1858, moved to Winchester in 1890 and to Owensboro in 1951.

Dr. Mitzel says he had already learned that the closeness of the Wesleyan community is unique. "KWC is much stronger and closer than any institution where I have been," he commented. "As the COVID-19 crisis unfolded, it was apparent that I was surrounded by a dedicated and talented team and a supportive community. This encouraging atmosphere gives KWC an advantage over other institutions in this regard."

The president explained that as the situation evolved, the campus community adapted on a daily, and sometimes hourly basis, to keep students, staff and faculty safe while continuing to provide a high quality education (See page 4 for more information on KWC's COVID-19 response). "But in tandem with our attention to the pandemic, we addressed campus upgrades (new roofs on five buildings, power washing, electronic key entry to buildings and extensive landscaping) and developed a systematic approach to long-range planning."

Dr. Mitzel began a listening tour with faculty, staff, students, trustees, alumni and friends, and the larger community

immediately after his arrival. He presented the aggregated information, organized into Three Pillars, to the Board of Trustees in June and then invited the KWC community to volunteer to participate in a work group that would address one of the pillars. The responsibility of each group is to formulate a strategy that takes the pillar from a hope to a reality. "We have fine minds and interested, committed people on this campus and on the board. I know each group will search paths less traveled that may nevertheless be quite powerful to build strong strategies for our future."

The Three Pillars are: I. Academic innovation and investment (Focus on academics and students) II. Building for the future (Focus on campus infrastructure needs) III. A commitment to affordability and excellence (Focus on affordability and financial strength) "The team addressing Pillar I will be tasked with looking at what new programs best fit our mission," stated Dr. Mitzel.

"I look forward with enthusiasm to the possibilities and want to bring several graduate programs to KWC as well." He also shared that he is pleased with the enrollment of 845 students this fall and hopes the College will reach 950 in the next three to five years. "We want to grow, but not so quickly that we lose the essence of who we are."

He also expressed confidence that KWC's online enrollment will be robust over the next several years.

Pillar II will study and prioritize potential campus infrastructure needs. "Acquisition of the Activity Hall (the former Legacy Church at 3300 Frederica St.) was timely, as Tapscott Chapel was reconfigured as a classroom to allow physical distancing, so this addition has been very important to Campus Ministries." Over the summer, the

to prepare the Activity Hall for our students. The Pillar II group will look at further needs within this building, as well as infrastructure needs across our campus."

The Pillar III group will focus on financial strength and affordability, and Dr. Mitzel emphasized that although the College is stable financially, it is imperative to focus on growing stronger. "We need scholarship endowments for our students, and we need support for our faculty and staff to continue professional development and ensure that they feel secure in their positions," he explained. "Academics is one of the few professions where employees stay at one institution for decades." He hopes to establish several endowments to ensure that KWC is competitive in pay equity for faculty and staff including not only salaries, but retirement, health care packages and professional development.

"One of the primary reasons students choose a small liberal arts college is the opportunity to work closely with their professors inside and outside the classroom," he shared. "I want our faculty to have more time to engage with students in out-of-the-classroom activities – whether on a research project, a theatre or musical production or on other valuable interactions. A Hidden Pillar Getting to Know Wesleyan's Center for Engaged Teaching & Learning

When you walk into the Howard Greenwell Library and Learning Center and take a left, it's hard to miss the Collaboratory of the Center for Engaged Teaching & Learning (CETL). You'll first notice white tables, like canvases, pushed together in a large rectangle. On the far side of the room stands a lightboard with remnants of markings from colorful pens. The walls are lined with shelves of resources and above them, posters of world travel. If you look closely, you might spot a three-dimensional puzzle of the Eiffel Tower, and if you're lucky – before the pandemic, at least – you might pass on a day when there are a few cookies left from a workshop. Everything about this room conveys what's at the heart of CETL: engagement.

CETL supports faculty and students in active-learning experiences in and outside the classroom. This spans from developing problem-based projects and pedagogies, to providing service-learning opportunities, to arranging study-abroad programs. In all its efforts, students are at the forefront. When Dr. Paula Dehn, vice president for academic affairs and dean, proposed CETL in the Title III Grant in 2014, she envisioned "helping the classroom

move from being teacher-centric to learner-centric," meaning the course material should foster hands-on student engagement, and should stretch beyond the classroom. "I'm a firm believer in engaged learning," said Dehn, and "We needed to find someone to work with the faculty under this new kind of pedagogy." Dr. Christine Salmon became that someone, and has developed many programs that emulate these efforts.

One of CETL's most robust projects is the Bonner Leader Program, which helps students acquire community service leadership skills. It is also one that Salmon finds most rewarding. "The Bonners (as we affectionately call them) attend a Summer Leadership Institute each year. This entails a 10- to 18-hour drive in a minivan with five students," she said, quickly adding, "We love these 'road trips'!" Krisleigh Watson '21, a "Bonner" since the program's inception and current Student Coordinator, worked with the Western Kentucky Raptor Center for two years. "The idea is to spend the entire four years of college with the same nonprofit," explained Watson, so "the student becomes an integral part of managing things." This is uncommon, she

noted, "so it's an amazing way for students to connect with a cause they're passionate about."

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is another student-centered feature of CETL. Providing accounting majors real-world as well as volunteer experience, it's helped students like Vincient Whatley '22 discover the benefits of service: "My favorite memory was preparing taxes for an older woman, whose main source of income was social security, [and she] was the sole provider for her granddaughter. When we finished her return, we found out that she would receive money back from the IRS. Apparently, she had an unexpected bill they couldn't pay and the refund was enough to cover it.

She was quite emotional." Whatley remarked that through VITA, he "developed a sense of altruism that [he] had never experienced before."

Of course, CETL knows that supporting faculty is just as important as direct support of students. CETL's travel grants have enabled Dr. Rachel Pritchard (Associate Professor of Biology) to attend the Tiny Earth Symposium in Wisconsin, at which her student presented a poster, and she returned with ideas for her Intro to Bio and Medical Microbiology courses and independent research with students. They also helped Nate Gross (Associate Professor of Theatre) travel to Virginia for training in the Meisner Technique of acting to bring back to his classes, and sent Dr. Angela Mackey (Assistant Professor of Psychology) to Florida twice for the National Institute for the Teaching of Psychology.

Additionally, CETL hosts "Talking about Teaching," where faculty meet in the Collaboratory to discuss articles or books on teaching, and the "Brown Bag" series, where faculty can share research or volunteer interests.

When the pandemic hit, Dr. Salmon said CETL "offered immediate assistance to faculty through workshops," with topics such as how to use Brightspace, how to create videos, and how to use the lightboard. Dr. Salmon even held virtual one-on-one meetings, some in the evenings or on weekends, further demonstrating CETL's commitment to faculty support. Over 50 faculty were enrolled in a summer "Online Teaching and Learning Course," run by Dr. Salmon and Associate Dean for Online Education Dr. Rebecca Francis, helping faculty learn how to relate to the students' experience in online learning and to standardize instruction.

"We have accomplished much in the past five years, and there is much more to do," remarked Dr. Salmon. "One of our goals," she said, "is to increase participation in study abroad." Dean Dehn shares this goal, recalling that "Wesleyan's been to Israel, England, Cuba – they've been short trips, but they've made lasting impressions."

Regarding her trip to Tanzania, Darayon Moore '21 said, "This experience changed my life. I did not realize how privileged America is compared to other countries." Moore helped at an orphanage and public hospital, where "all of the women had to deliver their children in the same room." She added, "I think it is important to study other cultures [as it] teaches a person humility and how to see matters from other people's perspectives." The Oxfam Hunger Banquet and United Way Pledge Drive are other ways CETL raises global awareness, but there is more to do indeed.

It's hard to believe that one Collaboratory tucked in a library generates so many programs and events, especially with their range of impact. That is why although the Title III Grant funds have ended, Kentucky Wesleyan has assumed support of CETL, and the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) on Writing through Engagement will continue to offer support to its related efforts. CETL is here to stay, and will continue to build a dynamic structure of support on our campus, even if it's not out in the open, like a hidden pillar, or the Eiffel Tower puzzle on its shelf. CETL isn't about recognition. As Dr. Salmon puts it, "The relationships we build with students and faculty are the greatest reward.

There is nothing better than someone telling us we made a positive impact on them."

Sherry (Miller) Feldpausch '83, J.D. Board Chair

Leadership roles are nothing new to Sherry (Miller) Feldpausch '83, J.D. Throughout her career, she has assumed leadership responsibilities as a trust professional and volunteer that have required a steady hand of guidance.

Feldpausch became chair of the Kentucky Wesleyan College Board of Trustees on June 1, 2020. She is the first female board chair in the College's history and brings a true passion and connection to the institution.

She has served as a trustee since 2012 and previously was a member of the Kentucky Wesleyan College Alumni Association Board of Directors.

"When I was recruited to serve on the KWC Board of Trustees by Dr. Kenneth Peters '57, KWC trustee emeritus (and my second cousin), I never envisioned that I would blaze a trail to become the first female board chair," said Feldpausch. "KWC provided me with a solid education and the opportunity and ability to fulfill my professional dreams and aspirations. During my time as board chair, I hope to enhance the trustee experience and will encourage trustee engagement to provide even better governance and oversight to the College."

A Daviess County native, Feldpausch grew up on a farm that has been in her mother's family for over 150 years.

She graduated from Apollo High School and followed in the footsteps of several family members who attended or graduated from KWC. She then went to the University of Louisville where she earned her juris doctorate in 1986 and was admitted to the Kentucky Bar Association as a licensed attorney later that year.

Sherry and her husband, Joe, also an Owensboro native, have been married for 37 years and have two children, Elizabeth, who attended Georgetown College, and Eric, who continued the family legacy as a Wesleyan graduate in 2011. Elizabeth and Eric are licensed attorneys in Louisville.

Eric is continuing his family's commitment to leadership at Wesleyan, as he is currently serving a second term on the alumni board.

"My parents instilled in me the importance of living a life of purpose through service. Continuing connections and commitments to institutions of meaning like KWC were encouraged and reinforced by example. Joe and I have tried to pass the importance of a service legacy on to our children."

As a founding principal and trust professional at The Glenview Trust Company in Louisville, Feldpausch uses her 30-plus years of fiduciary experience to guide clients in planning and administration of trusts and estates. In addition to her responsibilities as chair of the KWC Board of Trustees, she is a member of the Louisville Ballet Board, serving as its treasurer, and is a member and former board chair of the Kentucky Educational Television, Louisville Regional Board.

Addie Reimbold returned to campus on June 1 after an absence of two years following her 2018 graduation. "I am thrilled to be back! The second I stepped on campus as a student, I felt at home. KWC was a great fit for me. I wanted to attend a small college where my identity would not be limited to athletics, and Wesleyan supported my growth as a whole person."

A Panther basketball player, she says coaches Nicole and Caleb Nieman pushed her to chase her dreams and live life with a growth mindset. As a business administration major (economics minor), she remembers that economics professor Dr. Sally Asefa challenged and encouraged her academically. "She taught me that if a person is willing, pursuing a career you love will take you places you never imagined going."

Addie was a four-time letter winner, two-time team captain and 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year nominee. She is a member of The Order of Oak and Ivy. Following her years at KWC, Addie spent two years in Lincoln, Neb., where she earned a master of arts in business with a specialization in intercollegiate athletic administration at the University of Nebraska. She was a development assistant with the Huskers Athletic Fund and served as an intern in Athletics Advancement at the University of Notre Dame.

Addie says the development officer position at her alma mater was appealing because of the impact KWC has had on her life. The opportunities and experiences KWC provided would not have been possible without scholarships, and she enjoys helping ensure the same support is available for future students. "As a staff member, I see the bigger picture, and I'm excited about the direction of the College, including how we have become even more united as a campus and increased enrollment during such a challenging year."

She appreciates the connections she has made since her return and particularly enjoyed making "Gala in a Box" deliveries to President's Circle members prior to the virtual Gala in September. "That was a blast, and I loved meeting some of our supporters!" She has also conducted a survey of alumni of the last decade and hosted two events for this group, as well as several administrative projects that support development efforts.

Addie looks forward to hitting the road and meeting more of the Wesleyan community as soon as travel is possible.

"It has been an interesting year to start a new job, but the Advancement team has made it easy. We all work very well as a team and believe in what we are doing – because we believe in Kentucky Wesleyan."

She says her favorite spot in Owensboro is the riverfront, and she loves that Owensboro is small enough to run into people she knows, and big enough to have everything she wants. "I love being here. It's good to be home!"

A World of Adventures Dr. John Brock '81

The essential packing list for a Florida vacation includes sunscreen and a bathing suit, but these items were not on Dr. John Brock's list when he prepared to head south. His checklist included heavy tape, gloves, and syringes, and the bodies of water he looked forward to exploring in the Sunshine State were wetlands teeming with alligators – in the middle of the night.

Dr. Brock and his students scanned the surface of the water from an airboat for two red eyes, the closer together the better. It's easier to get a small gator into the boat than a big one, and that was their goal. They found the set of eyes they wanted, wrangled the gator into the boat, taped his snout shut, quickly extracted blood and urine for use in studies of reproduction, and released it back into the water.

The nighttime adventure was one of many Brock has led in such disparate places as Iceland, Denmark, rural western China, rural Mexico and Botswana. An analytical chemist, his curriculum vitae is voluminous. He has studied heat-related U.S. hospital admissions, examined predictors of future health impacts of climate change, managed PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls – highly toxic industrial compounds), pesticide and plasticizers analysis laboratories, and conducted research on phthalates (chemicals found in many products such as plastics and shampoos) and how they affect fetal development – and this is only a partial list of his Botswana accomplishments.

Brock grew up in the Valley Station area of Louisville. His guidance counselor at Jesse Stuart High School was a Wesleyan graduate who recognized Brock's potential.

When Robert Whitfield '58 told him he had to go to college and that KWC would be a good fit, Brock's reaction was that his brain was already too full. But he took the counselor's advice, applied to Wesleyan and was fortunate to obtain

scholarship money. A chemistry major, he arrived at the College in 1976 and remembers that Drs. Magnuson, Connor, and Flachskam were very warm and welcoming.

"I was a work study student in the Chemistry Department, and I always felt so comfortable in Dr. Magnuson's office.

They were all good to me and very encouraging." Dr. Connor guided him in the use of high tech instruments and copied a huge manual on high-level data link control to help him prepare for a job interview with Pepsico. He got the job and spent five years there, where he devised robotic systems.

Graduate courses in computer architecture and database design followed at Polytechnic University of New York in Brooklyn, and in 1991, the first generation high school and college graduate earned a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry and neuroscience from Emory University. He was also a post-doctoral fellow at the CDC's National Center for Environmental Health where he conducted research on breast cancer and at the University of Colorado, where he developed analytical techniques for the analysis of toxicants in airborne particulates.

Dr. Brock discovered a love for teaching as a Wesleyan student when Dr. Magnuson experienced a medical emergency, and Brock was asked to teach one of his classes. He had taken the course previously and excelled.

"I was honored," he recalled. "They presented me with a plaque at the senior chemistry picnic, which I still have.

They trusted me, and the experience opened the door to my future as a professor."

The Order of Oak and Ivy

"I believe strongly in a liberal arts education," explained Dr. Brock. "I learned to think critically, and I learned to consider my values." His chemistry professors were passionate about their field. "They taught me that if I was motivated and curious, I would succeed." He also remembers how engaging Dr. Bob Darrell's freshman writing course was and that he received the Freshman Writing Award.

He describes Dr. Tom Rogers (Professor of Religion and Philosophy) as his spiritual mentor. "He listened to me and encouraged me and helped me consider my life and my values. We had lunch every few weeks, and the memories of those lunches are very special.

He took time for me – what a gift."

Brock says it was easy to see who had been trained in the liberal arts at the CDC among the scientists and M.D.'s.

"They could cross disciplines and make things work."

Later, Dr. Brock was a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Environmental Studies at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, N.C., from 2001-2016. The University of North Carolina at Asheville invited him to join their faculty in 2016, where he teaches chemistry and environmental studies and established a new mass spectrometry lab. He was also a research professor at the Medical University of South Carolina from 2012-2018.

"I love the classroom and the challenges and rewards of guiding my students. My KWC professors had high standards, and I learned from the best."

He is a member of the prestigious Pen and Plate Club in Asheville, a group of 35 highly educated and diverse critical thinkers who make presentations to the group on their interests.

Dr. Brock says the most important part of his life is Eric, his 13-year old son whom he adopted as a toddler. "He loves video games and mountain biking, and he is my greatest joy and adventure."

Induction to the Order of Oak and Ivy is the College's most prestigious honor. Oak symbolizes strength of character, endurance of purpose and hardiness of spirit, and Ivy represents the bonds of friendship, constant devotion and lasting memory. Living Her Dream Emmalee Speer '16

She gets kisses from baby seals, swims with dolphins, cradles penguins like babies and is considered "The Bird Whisperer" in the aviary. This is the life of Emmalee Speer '16, a marine mammal trainer at Sea Life Park Hawaii on Waimanalo Beach, Oahu.

"This was my dream 100% growing up," Speer said.

"I always enjoyed animals; I owned horses and every domestic animal you could think of, but I did not know I wanted to work with marine life until I was in high school.

I did a dolphin interaction at the Indianapolis Zoo for my 16th birthday, and that's when I fell in love."

The native of Cortland, Ind., discovered Sea Life Park Hawaii during her junior year at Kentucky Wesleyan.

"I knew I wanted to be a marine mammal trainer, and I found Sea Life Park on a website that posts jobs/internships strictly for work with marine mammals. I applied in late 2014 and received an acceptance email in February 2015.

I interned at the park for three months during the summer and returned to KWC for my senior year.

"Following graduation, I interned at Dolphins Plus in Key Largo, Fla., and then worked as a server at one of the most famous restaurants in the Keys. I kept calling and emailing the curator of Sea Life Park, finally received a position in April 2016 and moved to Oahu in May." The zoology major described each day on the job as sheer enjoyment.

"I savor the bond I have with each animal. I do not just go into work to feed them and provide water. I create special relationships every day and every minute. It is hard to not be anthropomorphic (the attribution of human characteristics to animals), but the animals learn who you are. They discriminate between new trainers and myself.

They recognize me and trust me. They truly are my best friends.

"I also love educating our guests about marine life

preservation and conservation. It was tough being closed due to the coronavirus, and we are happy to be open now.

We used Instagram and Facebook platforms to update our followers on the animals, but it's great to see our visitors every day. Taking care of our planet is crucial, and I am lucky to be an ambassador."

Hawaii and the park were threatened by a July hurricane.

"It barely brushed us, but the Sea Life staff were prepared.

I'm blessed that over three years, I have been cross trained to help in any situation. I can work in every area including the aviary and seabird sanctuary, and I work with all dolphins, wholphins, sea lions and penguins and help keep them safe."

Emmalee's favorite animal is a 53-year old Atlantic bottlenose dolphin.

"When I was an intern, he was the first animal I was able to 'work and learn' and build a relationship with. He stole my heart. His name is Kamali'i O'ke kai, which means 'Child of the Sea' in Hawaiian."

Speer provided a sample of a normal day at the Park.

"I arrive at 5:30 a.m. because I am fish house lead and am in charge of sorting through all the fish we give our animals to ensure they receive the best quality. I do this with two to three other people, and we usually finish at 10 a.m. We then disperse into our areas within the park and go from dolphins (six) to sea lions (two) to penguins (four).

These animals receive three to four sessions a day. Each session is around 10-25 minutes, and then we incorporate cleaning pools, environment cleaning and upkeep, swim practice, record keeping, scrubbing 20+ coolers, cleaning,

weeding, re-labeling items and much more. Some people think all I do is play with dolphins all day, but there is much more to my job than that."

She loves living in Hawaii, although it is difficult to be so far from friends and family. "Being here has changed me.

I've learned to appreciate the smaller things in life and slow down and enjoy what's around me in the present and to always 'Live Aloha.' That's hard to explain unless you come and experience the vibe and culture yourself. I would give anything for my parents to come over and see me perform as a trainer.

"My boyfriend and I love to fish. We also enjoy drives around the island, which takes a full day with stops along the way. That has been our favorite thing to do. Each side of Oahu is different, so I love sightseeing. November-May is a great time to be here because the humpback whales migrate past the islands."

Speer gleamed with pride as she talked about Kentucky Wesleyan.

"I was on the Student Activities Programming Board, a Phon-a-Thon caller to alumni and part of several clubs. That involvement helped me open up and gain confidence."

"Wesleyan changed me.

It was an amazing opportunity, and I met the best people."

She shared the tremendous impact of her four years at Kentucky Wesleyan.

"The professor who influenced me most was former zoology professor Dr. Shannon Finnerty. She arrived my sophomore year and become my advisor. I was often in her office asking questions, and our relationship grew from there. She was not only a mentor but became a friend by my senior year. We share a passion for marine animals.

"Former Campus Minister Rusty Tichenor and his family opened their arms to me during my last years at Wesleyan, and I'm EXTREMELY grateful for Rusty. He truly influenced me.

"Wesleyan changed me. It was an amazing opportunity, and I met the best people. I joined Kappa Delta my freshman year, and that experience gave me life. I miss Wesleyan.

Every year I look at tickets to come to Homecoming and want to be there. Maybe next year I can make it, but in the meantime, I'll 'Live Aloha.'"

#PantherPositivity shines bright The College introduced #PantherPositivity across social media channels in the spring to celebrate laughter, togetherness and the good in our world in the midst of the pandemic.

After students departed abruptly in the spring, it was a while before Minerva got a fresh coat of paint. We hosted a Minerva Makeover Coloring Contest for our youngest Panthers, and we enjoyed their creativity.

The Alumni Office collected letters, notes, Bible verses, quotes and other bits of encouragement for the Class of 2020 to remind them they weren't alone as they ended their college careers remotely.

Graduates and their families appreciated the finished product, "Dear Seniors." Thank you to everyone who contributed.

Owensboro First Thursday Returns KWC Sponsors Owensboro Remote Rooster Booster The College sponsored the July Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce virtual Rooster Booster event and invited participants to drive by the campus afterward to pick up a KWC mug. Thanks to everyone who helped greet our visitors and pass out the mugs.

After a four-month hiatus, Owensboro First Thursday returned in July at the home of Doug '84 and Brenda Hoyt. It was great to see some of our local alumni and friends in person.

Our August First Thursday at Bar Louie was another fun one.

Virtual Reunion Weekend Connects Hundreds Hundreds of alumni and friends gathered through virtual events to celebrate The Wesleyan Way and reminisce Sept. 25-27. From coast to coast, and as far away as Denmark, they enjoyed Greek reunions, coaches roundtables, a virtual 5K, Wesleyan Singers Cabaret, virtual President's Gala, 50th reunion of the Class of 1970, and a Sunday worship service. Dr. Mitzel hosted a President's Panel with former presidents Dr. Wes Poling, Dr. Cheryl Jay Ivey '11 and future Panther King '70 and Bart Darrell '84. Over Ford join the President's Gala from 700 people have enjoyed the virtual Williston, N.D. President's Gala with Doug Hoyt '84 as master of ceremonies, Chair of the Board Sherry (Miller) Feldpausch '83, a virtual toast, the Alma Mater with the Kentucky Wesleyan Singers and a nostalgic look back at previous in-person Galas. Athletics Aric Lyons '23

A Family Tradition

Most present and past Wesleyan students describe Wesleyan as their home away from home. For sophomore student-athlete Aric Lyons, that connection goes even further. Aric's father, Chad Lyons '92, uncles Craig Lyons '96 and Tim Payment '97, and aunt Cathy (Evans) Pauley '95 attended KWC long before Aric called Wesleyan home.

"The campus has really felt like home since my first visit," Lyons commented. "Attending the College where a large chunk of my family attended is really special."

Chad Lyons, a chemistry teacher and football and baseball coach at Saint Xavier High School in Louisville, played Panther football and in 2015, he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. That was the first time Aric visited campus. Even though he wasn't considering which college to attend then, he remembers thinking the campus was beautiful and a place he could easily call home.

"I remember my dad reminiscing about KWC and the relationships he formed in college. His closest friends are people he met at Wesleyan. He contacts them on a regular basis to this day and makes it clear that Wesleyan was the place where he formed relationships with people who have helped him throughout his career."

Aric was offered the chance to play baseball at the collegiate level at his dad's alma mater. He pulls double duty as a utility player in the outfield and as a pitcher. Aric also stays involved on campus as the baseball representative for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and as a resident assistant.

A chemistry major, Aric stays busy inside the classroom as well. When asked about his future plans, Aric immediately stated optometry was his goal. With the help of family friend Antoine Poythress '91 (CEO, Jenkins County Medical Center, Millen, Ga.), he had the opportunity to shadow several doctors at Washington County Regional Medical Center in Sandersville, Ga. "I spent a week following different doctors, including a pediatrician and an emergency

room doctor, to explore career options. I've also had several optometry visits in my life and that field has always fascinated me."

Aric's favorite memory from his freshman year is the spring break baseball trip to Florida. "We played five games, and we won all five! The best part was being with my teammates the whole week and enjoying the warm Florida weather."

Uncle Tim Payment is a U.S. Army colonel currently stationed at Fort Knox, Ky. He was recognized with the Outstanding Young Graduate Award in 2010 and inducted into the Alumni Hall of Fame in 2019. He sees his nephew as an outstanding role model to his cousins and hopes Aric can convince them to become Panthers.

Years after his family members graduated from KWC, the College implemented The Wesleyan Way. Although these principles weren't an official part of KWC back then, it's apparent that the four principles of honor, love, integrity and support were very much a part of the Wesleyan Aric heard about as a kid. "Almost every day, I see either a picture of my dad or of my uncle here on campus," stated Aric. "It's great motivation for me to be like them, and it's also a reminder of how they have impacted my life as role models."

UPDATE ON ATHLETICS

Athletics

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented numerous challenges for the conduct of Division II athletics. We continue to work with national, state and local health authorities to provide safe competition opportunities for our student-athletes.

At this time, winter and spring sports are planned to start on time, as scheduled. The cross country, golf, tennis and bowling programs have competed this fall, while previously postponed fall sports (football, soccer and volleyball) will play shortened seasons this spring and have the opportunity to compete for G-MAC championships. Decisions on spectators for all sports will be made in accordance with state, local and facility guidelines.

Dr. LaTasha Henry '08

The Right People and the Perfect Atmosphere

by Katherine Rutherman LaTasha Henry had two goals for her immediate post-high school life – to prepare for medical school and play college basketball. "I wanted to play ball, but I was realistic about my field of study and career goals," she remembered.

"I knew the best fit for me was a small college with a reputation for academic excellence, and that's why I chose Wesleyan."

She loved science in high school and found the idea of interaction with patients appealing. LaTasha explained that access to care and lack of medical knowledge competency pervaded the community in which she was raised. "I saw family members as they were treated by some of the best . . . and not the best. My motivation originates from those observations."

Dr. Henry said of the science faculty at Wesleyan, "I had one heck of a crew in my corner. Drs. Evelyn Hiatt and David Oetinger in biology, Dr. Bob and Nancy Flachskam and Drs. Henry Connor and W.L. Magnuson in chemistry – all the best.

They were there for me every step of the way."

She remembered a time when she was overwhelmed and doubting herself. "I felt like pulling out of the race altogether. I just didn't think I had what it took to get into medical school."

Dr. Hiatt counseled and encouraged her. "She would not let me give up. She imparted wisdom to me and educated me in a very caring way during that time of crisis."

Fall 2020

Dr. Henry describes her Panther teammates as "family forever." She recalls victories and losses, on the court and off the court, that allowed them to grow together. But playing basketball at Wesleyan was about more than her teammates; it was about the fans, too.

"You don't meet fans anywhere like Panther fans. What memories."

After earning a B.S. in biology, she enrolled at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and graduated in 2012. An internal medicine residency there followed, and she completed a fellowship in gastroenterology, also at U of L, in 2018. Today she is a practicing gastroenterologist at Providence Hospital in Mobile, Ala. She says her goal today is to give whatever she can where it is most needed and wherever God wants her to be. She looks back on her years at Kentucky Wesleyan and is grateful that the College helped her grow and mature. "KWC shaped me. There were so many helping hands, and I always knew God was in control. The people there, and their faith and compassion, are still with me all these years later."

LaTasha still plays basketball every chance she gets, and she enjoys guitar lessons, too. "Kentucky Wesleyan will always be a part of me," she reflected. "The College had the right tools, the right people and perfect atmosphere for me. I will always be grateful."

Class Notes In the midst of a global pandemic, life goes on and wedding bells ring

The love story of Austin '20, (from Louisville, Ky.), and Annie-Grace (Marker) Trammell '20, (from Parkersburg, W.V.), began at Kentucky Wesleyan. Assigned to the same freshman orientation class, they were close friends by their sophomore year, became an item and were well on their way to a senior year engagement.

"Something just suddenly clicked with me, and I realized what we had was something special and more than a friendship," Austin shared.

They enjoyed involvement in Campus Ministries, serving as resident assistants and exploring as Wesleyan Fellows - Austin conducting math research and coding (computer programming to create active learning lessons and problems for Dr. Justin Trulen's use in various math courses) under Dr. Trulen, and Annie-Grace in chemistry under Dr. Krystal (Teasley) Hamorsky '04. Her project involved research to create a flavivirus biosensor which would ideally function to detect flaviviruses in serum.

Austin was also the Wesley N. Panther mascot all four years. "I loved representing KWC. It was fun to fuel the crowd's imagination about who could be in that Panther suit," Austin remembered.

Unlike the countless Wesleyan sweethearts who preceded them, Austin and Annie-Grace finalized their "life after college" plans in the midst of a global pandemic. Despite much of the world coming to a standstill, life kept moving forward for Annie-Grace and Austin.

The couple's senior year ended abruptly as the pandemic evolved. After leaving campus in March, Austin scrambled

to finish his student teaching hours, and Annie-Grace returned home to West Virginia and finished the semester remotely. Then they learned Commencement would be a virtual event, rather than the face-to-face ceremony they had envisioned.

"We wish our senior year had ended differently, especially graduation, but we appreciated that the College took proper measures to keep everyone safe," the couple shared. "We didn't get to walk across the stage, but at the end of the day, we could still say we had successfully completed four strenuous years at Wesleyan, and we were healthy."

A June wedding date was already on the calendar, and they had tough decisions to make. The couple condensed their list of wedding attendees to immediate family and the bridal party.

"The change of venue and smaller size allowed us to enjoy a much more intimate wedding – something we genuinely cherished," Annie-Grace recalled. "We celebrated with those closest to us, and it was just what we needed; the perfect wedding we had never anticipated."

After the wedding, it was time for the next steps in real world living. The Trammells moved to Starkville, Miss., where Annie-Grace attends Mississippi State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, and Austin is an eighth grade math teacher.

Entering the classroom as a new educator during this challenging time includes unique stressors, but Austin sees a silver lining in the situation.

The career of former Wesleyan pitcher Henry Ayres was featured in the Dubois County Herald in Indiana. He retired 20 years ago as athletic director at Heritage Hills High School and was inducted to the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014.

Mitch Settle and his team at The Settle Group-Baird Private Wealth Management were recognized by both Barron's (10th straight year) and Forbes (second straight year) magazines as being a top financial advisor in Kentucky for 2020. Mitch is a trustee emeritus and has been inducted into the Kentucky Wesleyan College Alumni Hall of Fame.

1970 Dr. John C. Settle Jr. retired on July 31 after a 50-year career in education.

1980 Michael Wade was promoted to program director for the University of Louisville's Master of Accountancy program.

1981 Ivan Corbin was appointed senior pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Homestead, Fla. Ivan is also president of the Historical Society of the United Methodist Church and will begin serving as the chairperson of the Florida Conference Commission on Archives and History in October. He and his wife, Debbie, welcomed their second grandchild in April and are expecting their third in October.

1982 Chris Duke received the Founder's Award from Doing Good at Work for his commitment to recognizing and thanking his customers. Chris is the owner of Anna's Gourmet Goodies in Raleigh, N.C. Mike Hamilton retired after 33 years as a distinguished teacher and coach in the Daviess County Public Schools.

Linda works as an HR specialist at Metalsa Company in Elizabethtown, Ky. Matt Pobereyko announced his return to a professional baseball career in the American Association of Professional Baseball, where he pitches for the St. Paul Saints.

Amanda Donnelly was named Mahr Park Arboretum's first environmental educator.

Amanda will be responsible for developing and providing environmental and naturebased educational programs, activities and field trips at the arboretum in Madisonville, Ky.

(Spencer) Murphy '09 and Paul Bates '95 were the recipients of 2020 Campbellsville University Excellence in Teaching Awards.

Murphy was one of 24 Kentucky educators to receive the 2021 Valvoline Teacher Achievement Award, and the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer featured Lindow in a recent article about the outstanding efforts of local educators during COVID-19.

Kate Dishion and James Graham were recently married in Lexington, Ky.

Skyler Stewart earned a master of public administration degree from Western Kentucky University.

Crystal Hopkins '18 started a new position as intake and documentation specialist at S2 Medical Supply, LLC.

2020 Wesleyan sweethearts Sierra Morrow and Michael McGee were married in July.

2016 Dominique Caminos-Davis was promoted to senior client partner at Core Strengths in Texas. Dominique is the lead salesperson and facilitator for the company. She was also accepted into the Master of Counseling program at St. Edward's University.

"Schedules and plans change by the hour in an effort to keep everyone safe, but I find it rewarding to help give students a sense of stability," Austin shared. "They need to know they are valued at school after returning from a five-month spring break. I honestly feel much more prepared to adapt to changes and find myself being a much more patient teacher than I may have been prior to COVID-19."

Now that life is calming down somewhat for the newlyweds, they have reflected on what it means to be new alumni of Kentucky Wesleyan College.

Wade Mountz served faithfully on the KWC Board of Trustess from 1978-2000 and became a trustee emeritus in 2001. He was administrator of Norton Memorial Infirmary in Louisville from 1958-1969 and after the merger that created Norton-Children's Hospital in 1969, he served as president until 1981 and then as president CEO of NKC, Inc., (later renamed Norton Healthcare) until 1988. He served in many leadership capacities in Kentucky and nationwide, including president of the Kentucky Hospital Association and chair of the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees. He received numerous awards for his many professional achievements and gave generously of his time to mentor others. KWC honored him with the Gus E. Paris Distinguished Service Award in 2000.

Jack Wells was a dedicated KWC trustee from 19942020 and served as chair from 2001-2005.

He ironed sheets at a local nursing home when he was 15, and five years later he purchased his first nursing home.

He owned the Canteen Franchise for most of western Kentucky and southern Indiana and has owned retail centers, medical, pharmaceutical and respiratory distribution companies, including the largest long-term care company in Kentucky.

He was a partner in the development of many areas in downtown Owensboro and other parts of the city. He served on a number of nonprofit boards and received many awards for his generosity and service to others. KWC honored him as an Outstanding Alumnus in 2011 and with induction to the Alumni Hall of Fame in 2014.

The mission of Kentucky Wesleyan College is to foster a liberal arts education that nourishes and prepares students intellectually, spiritually, and physically to achieve success in life. To achieve our mission, Wesleyan relies heavily on gifts from private sources.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2021, the College will utilize a 7% administrative fee on all restricted gifts. Administrative fees are common practice in higher education fundraising, and college and universities throughout the country make use of these fees to cover the administrative costs of handling donor investments. It is not uncommon for these fees to be 14-15% at peer institutions.

Many of our donors, including President's Circle members, have recurring gifts.

Gifts of Securities Have you considered making a gift but don't want to use your cash on hand? Gifting stock you have owned for at least a year is considered appreciated, which means you nor the charity will pay capital gains taxes. This can be more beneficial than giving cash in some cases.

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA can satisfy a portion or all of your required minimum distribution (RMD). If you're 72 or older, rolling over a gift from your IRA may be most beneficial.

Gifts through your estate Making a planned gift is a wonderful way to show your support and appreciation for Wesleyan and our mission while accommodating your own personal, financial, estate-planning and philanthropic goals. With smart planning, you may actually increase the size of your estate and/or reduce the tax burden on your heirs.

Why I Give Scott Pickrell

Philanthropy is in Scott Pickrell's DNA. It's something he learned from his mother, the late Joyce S. Taylor.

Taylor, who passed away on Thanksgiving morning 2019, was a generous friend to Wesleyan as well as Shriners Hospitals for Children, In Touch Ministries and her local church.

"I told Mom before she passed away that I would honor everything she was doing – continue her legacy," Pickrell said. He has stayed true to his word.

The Joyce S. Taylor Memorial Fund was endowed by Pickrell in February. Earnings from the fund will go toward the greatest needs of the College, such as scholarships. Pickrell also supports the Wesleyan Scholarship Fund, Panther Athletic Fund, the athletics department endowment and several athletics programs. He's a proud member of the President's Circle and Heritage Society, which recognizes benefactors who have remembered Wesleyan in their estate plans.

"I've been truly blessed," he said. "I want to help others who may need it. The people at Wesleyan have always been kind and welcomed me, and I feel like part of the family. I have a big heart, and I'm happy to give."

He even helps serve meals to student-athletes during holiday breaks.

Pickrell's relationship with Wesleyan dates back to the 1960s at the Sportscenter. His mother used to drop him off at basketball games, then she would listen to Joel Utley's call from their home. Scott's studies at the University of Cincinnati and later his career at Texas Gas kept him away

from Owensboro for many years, but he's been a season ticket holder and fixture behind the basket since Wayne Boultinghouse roamed the sideline for the Panthers.

KWC basketball became a family affair. Scott and his late uncle, Gary Pickrell, reconnected through Panther hoops and their love for his uncle's restaurant, Gary's Drive-In. "We fell out of touch for a long time, but when I moved back to Owensboro, I started going to Gary's often," Scott said. "Gary and I became close, with KWC tying us even closer. He was my best friend."

Wesleyan is blessed by and proud of the fact that many bonds have been formed and strengthened with the College at the center. Scott Pickrell can attest to that.

"I have many friends at KWC, past and present," he said.

"I enjoy making new friends and want to continue helping Wesleyan, student-athletes and others where I can."
