Fall Preview 2018

KENTUCKY WESLEYAN COLLEGE

Hello to the Wesleyan Family! Greetings everyone! The summer certainly flew by here on campus as we spent all of it getting ready for your return! As beautiful as our campus is, it certainly isn’t the same without you students here. We anticipate the arrival of an incredible freshman class to join “our top shelf ” returning student body. We are excited about some brilliant new faculty members who are joining our stellar group with whom you returning students have already studied. Our highly energized faculty and staff is one of the things that separates Kentucky Wesleyan from other colleges and universities. Look for some exciting changes to campus this fall. One of those changes include new turf on our football field, thanks to the generosity of Kentucky Wesleyan supporters. This will make for even more exciting Saturday afternoons pulling for our Panthers football team. You will also see changes to the Winchester Center, which will include new food options, a newly renovated Panther’s cafe, and an upcoming addition of a 24-hour marketplace that will make after hours options more accessible to the lives of busy college students. Looking back, our national rankings all increased. We announced new professional and educational partnerships as options for you as you move toward your careers. We were again voted the top higher education institution in the area by the public; and we continued to attract more students and supporters. All of this happened because of you and your tremendous work along with the energy demonstrated in all that you do. I hope you all had an amazing summer; and I wish each of you an incredible upcoming school year. Hurry back!

Congrats, New Panthers!

Working at Wesleyan

Working on campus can be a great, convenient way to earn some money. There are three things you should know before you start:

This is one of the most exciting times in your life! College is a huge, new chapter; and I am ecstatic that you have chosen Kentucky Wesleyan as your home for the next four years. This time is going to be filled with lasting memories you will cherish forever. You are going to make so many new relationships throughout your time here and will be greatly impacted by your Wesleyan community. I know you are filled with conflicting emotions right now. You are probably a bit nervous about being on your own for the first time, but excited for that same reason. I am here to tell you, that although you may be leaving your family, you already have one right here at KWC.

1

Students who work at the College must complete a Form I-9 before work begins. This federal form, available on the PantherNet, requires that certain forms of identification be presented. Before you start working, remember to bring your IDs as listed on the form to Human Resources.

It seems like not too long ago I was in your same shoes. I couldn’t wait to see what college was all about. Now, I realize how much Kentucky Wesleyan has truly given me; and I know it will do the same for you. I learned who I was as an individual. KWC helped shape me into a person I am proud to be; and I know my fellow students can confidently say the same for themselves. One piece of advice as you start your undergraduate career-- grab every opportunity presented to you. It may take you out of your comfort zone; but you will learn to recognize your potential. You will discover what you are interested in, what you are good at, and maybe even what you’re not so good at. Join a club or organization, try out for a team, introduce yourself to someone you don’t know, ask a professor for help. I can tell you right now that you won’t be let down; because here at Wesleyan, you always have support. I am excited to meet you all. As your Student Government President, I am eager to answer any questions you may have coming into this unfamiliar adventure. At Kentucky Wesleyan College, there is a friend around every corner, myself included. I hope you are as enthusiastic about the upcoming school year as I am! Let’s make it a great one! Sincerely,

Sydney Goff,

SGA President

Student Government Association SGA Leadership “Being a Student Ambassador is one of the best jobs on campus! Phonathon 2018 Earn extra money, enjoy free food, win prizes, and chat with Wesleyan Alumni. Phonathon is the perfect way to do that. Each year, Kentucky Wesleyan contacts their alumni to update records and ask for contributions to the Wesleyan General Scholarship Fund. This is an important initiative—the fund supports 98% of our student body with financial aid.

The Student Success Center (SSC) The Student Success Center houses Kentucky Wesleyan’s academic support services for students. Located in The Winchester Center, the Center enjoys a centrally located space in a high-traffic area. Staff there, both professional and peer, strive to assist students academically by offering academic support resources and programs. Student Success Center services include one-on-one peer tutoring, faculty tutoring, Supplemental Instructors for courses with below target course completion rates, arrangement of group study sessions, writing assistance, and study skills assistance. Throughout the school year, the Student Success Center offers free workshops to all Wesleyan students.

Learning and Study Skills

Student Success Series

During New Student Orientation, all new traditional freshman students complete the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI). The LASSI is a national instrument used at over 3000 United States colleges and universities. Students answer 60 questions related to ten different scales, each one of which is an important factor in student success: time management, organization, test strategies, concentration, motivation, anxiety, selection of main idea, use of academic resources, self-testing, and information processing. Students may print their results immediately upon completion. Scores are reported to KW 101 faculty before classes begin and all freshmen attend a Student Skills presentation during a KW 101 class meeting in the third week of their first semester to learn more about the LASSI scores and specific ways they can improve in challenge areas.

A Student Success Workshop Series, providing instruction about a specific study skill, is presented each week. Students leave the workshop with new reference material that is also available any time for pick-up. Topics include time management, organization, test strategies, concentration, motivation, anxiety, selection of main idea, use of academic resources, self-testing, and information processing.

Center for Engaged Teaching and Learning (CETL) The Center for Engaged Teaching & Learning (CETL) works with faculty and students to design engaging, significant, and meaningful learning experiences in and out of the classroom. Ordering your textbooks is easy! Visit the Kentucky Wesleyan College Virtual Bookstore at https://kwc.ecampus.com/ shop-by-course. Have your books shipped directly to you on campus using the following address: Joe/Jane Student Kentucky Wesleyan College 3000 Frederica Street

For students, we coordinate Scholars Day, when students share their research and creative projects; and we coordinate study abroad (international) or study away (domestic). Through our Community Engagement program, we help the service-minded student and student organizations find volunteer opportunities and we manage both the Bonner Leaders Program and the VITA Tax Preparation Program (see below). The Bonner Leaders Program is an intensive community service and leadership development program where students intern at community partner organizations in Owensboro and participate in Leadership training.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) trains volunteers to prepare income taxes for low and moderate-income people. We are seeking volunteers! All majors can participate. Volunteers who complete the training receive a certification from the IRS. CETL works with faculty to identify and develop servicelearning projects (get credit for serving the community and learning!) and we help faculty develop engaging and motivating activities such as undergraduate research and problem-based learning. CETL also coordinates the College’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). If you have any questions, let us know. CETL is the place to come if you want to expand your educational horizons and/or serve the community. Come by and see us in the Library. We always have candy!

Health Services The Student Health Service (Nurse’s Office) is here to provide basic health care. The office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is located in room 213 of the Administration Building. All information and communication with students will be confidential unless written permission to inform others is given. Health care services include over-the-counter medication, bandages, blood sugar and blood pressure checks, and flu vaccinations. Health and meningitis forms must be in the students file to receive care. With the exception of flu vaccinations, Student Health Services are free to all students. First aid and CPR classes are offered each semester. Students are required to only pay for the cost of the certification card ($20). Please study these suggestions as you prepare for the academic year, and take action before you arrive.

Bonnor Leaders Take New York

• Talk with your primary care provider regarding a meningitis vaccination. • Consider undergoing a physical examination (required for all scholar-athletes and administered during check in), and ask for a copy of your immunization records. These will be required for many off campus internships. Kentucky Wesleyan requires that all full-time students (with the exception of online students) have health insurance coverage. If you currently have none, you may consider coverage on your parents plan if you are under 26 years of age. Students without insurance may also be assisted by local agencies who can meet you on campus as a convenience. Email the campus nurse at tmarksberry@kwc.edu to schedule a free appointment for assistance.

Be a part of the Kentucky Wesleyan Panther Career Ally Program (Panther CAP)! Panther CAP will connect you with Kentucky Wesleyan alumni and friends, providing an easy way to form relationships with professionals who can serve as a key component of your personal and professional development. The Office of Alumni Relations will personally pair you with a graduate or friend of the College to serve as your Career Ally based on your field of study, career goals and interests. For more information and to complete the program application, please visit kwc.edu/PantherCAP or contact Mary McDole, Alumni Relations Coordinator at (270) 852-3144/email at mary.mcdole@kwc.edu.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT Individual career counseling, assessments for career and educational planning, and job shadowing are just a few examples of how Career Development can help students explore career fields. Career Development offers workshops to help with resumes, cover letters, interviewing, networking, business etiquette, and other soft skills to assist students in marketing themselves to graduate schools, professional programs, and employers. The Career Development Office strongly encourages students to: • Find seasonal employment or internship opportunities, at least two while in college, in their chosen field which provide “relevant experience.” • Join clubs, organizations and hold positions of leadership while in school to develop “leadership experience.” • Volunteer and participate in service learning opportunities in the community for “community involvement.” All of the above strengthen a student’s personal and civic profile, and provide depth and substance to their resume, which makes them more attractive to employers and professional programs. For more information, stop by the Career Development Office in the Student Success Center.
