IN TR O DU C TI O N Insight is a mentorship program that is tailor made to accelerate the transformation and growth of individuals in key ares that have been identified.

The program aims at empowering young people with life skills so as to develop their personal capabilities through educational and motivational experiences.

The program has been designed to run for ten weeks though we can also conduct intensives depending with the need. Through it’s presentations and coaching engagements, interested individuals and groups will be empowered to achieve their goals and life’s purpose despite challenging enviroments. The lessons have been designed to be riveting.

O V ER V I E W The young people at this present age are face with diverse challenges. They include but are not limited to; 1. Alcohol and Drugs: This has become a common problem facing young people today. Unfortunately the many who experiment with them know little about the misery that they bring upon themselves.

2. Academic Challenges: They are under contant pressure from both their parents and teachers to perform andget good grades.Most of those who can not handle the pressure seek for other alternative ways that might be harmful to cope with the pressure.

3. Relationship problems: Most young people today are in or areplanning to get into a realationship. This may include physical involvement with a person of the same or the opposite sex. When they engage in unsafe sex, their is the risk of early pregnancy and the contraction of sexually transmitted diseases.

4. Identity crisis: The young people have the need to be accepted and to belong. Therefore, they spend hugeamounts of money to look good and fit in because they suffer from appearance and body image problems.

5. Depression: They develop feelings of worthlessness and inadequecy over their grades in school performances, social status, sexual orientation, family life etc.

6. Social network addiction: Young people today are desperate for a social world because they think it is a place to relax and escape from other pressures. They spend a lot of time in the internet making themselves vulnerable to different vices and being taken advantage of.

The “INSIGHT� program therefore, seeks to empower the young people by educating them on life skills that will increasetheir knowledge towards some of the key ares that have been identified. The content is relevant to the young people’s experiences and interests.

►► Children as young as 5 years old are having their first experience with drugs?

►► Up to more than 55,000 children under the age of 14years are addicted to drugs?

►► 45% of young people in Kenya are abusing alcoholand drugs. If we round it off to 50% it simply means 1 out of every 2 youths is abusing drugs. ►► 83.3% of school going children have used either alcohol,marijuana,cocaine or heroin without their teachers’ knowledge. ►► 56.3% of school going children reported that prescription drugs were being abused in their schools.

►► 71% of school going children reported that prescription drugs are readily available over the counter.

Drugs are substances either legal or illegal, that by their chemical refuge can change the way the body functions and the way people think, feel and act.

►► Drug abuse involves the intake of excessive chemical substance so as to achieve a certain effect. ►► It can also be defind as the self administartion of drugs for non-medical reasons,in quanities and frequencies which may impart inability to function effectively and which may result in physcological and or emotional harm.

Dr u g abus e hi n d e r s g r o w t h Emotional growth comes from facing life’s challenges,handling success and surviving failure.

Young people who rely on chemical refuge to solve their problems hinder their emotional development. They fail to develop the skills they need to cope with problems. Developing coping skills take practice. Young people who hide behind drug induced euphoria “love inexperience� they fail to develop the knowledge and skills needed to deal with challenges in life.

The repeated use of drugs leads to changes in the brain and the nervous systemso that the user needs more of the drug in order to get expected effects. In other words, they use the drug in large doses.

Depend en c e

Any dependence is an emotional and sometimes physical need experienced by the drug abuser. The person feels a compulsion to take the drug on regular basis to feel the effects and avoid the discomfort of its absences. Drug dependence means that a person needs a drug to function normally. Abrupt stoppage of using the drug leads to withdrawal symptoms.

roblems are a possibility that each person has to face at some point in life.

Life is a series of continous problems.

The problems keep on coming to us like the waves of the ocean. The only break in the unbroken series of problems are the occassional crisis. (Our lives then would be problem,problem,problem - then crisis like the waves of the ocean.)

In life we are either in a problem, or have just gotten out of a problem, or we are about to enter into a problem.

W hat is a pr obl e m ?

According to the dictionary, a problem is any matter that involves uncertainity or difficulty.

It is also defined as a situation that is unwelcomed or unpleasant and needs to be dealt with and overcomed.

►► Problems are the cutting adge that distinguishes between success and failure. ►► Problems calls forth our courage and create our wisdom

Our emotions will guide us in facing challenges and tasks too important to leave the intellect alone. For instance, ntellectual intelligence (IQ) canhelp you get into the university but it is your emotional intelligence (EQ) that will enable you manage the stress and emotions of sitting foryour exams.

1. Creativity is the ability to come up with new ideas of doing things.

2. Creativity is also defined as the tendency to generate or recognise new possibilities that may be useful in solving problems.

3. Creativity is any act or idea that changes an existing domain or transforms it into a new one.

Creativity is not profitable if action does not follow from it. Ideas must be evaluated,improved and published before they have any value.

3. Identify the best possible solution(s) : From the ideas you have generated select the best idea(s) to solve the problem(s).

ime is constant and irreversible. Nothing can be substituted for time.Once wasted it can never be regained. You can not stop time, you cannot slow it down nor can you speed it up. Therefore you need to manage time effectievely for it to be effective.

THE 80 / 2 0 P R IN C IP LE

The 80/20 principle teaches us that when you focus your attention on your most important activities, you will gain the highest return on your effort.

In other words, if you tend to the20% most important priorities, you accomplish 80% of the results you desire.

This principle can be applied to your every day life to enable you to live more effectively.

Note : Accomplishing your first two priorities will give you 80% of your desired results.

This occurs because you have made the list in order of priorities. Many lower ones are much less fruitful. They are not priorities you should focus on first.

1. Make a to-do-list. Write out what youneed to accomplish.

2. Set your priorities. Put the most important items at the top of the list.

3. Get into a routine. When routines are used properly,they can realse you to use time effectively. Choose a time to get a certain task accomplished and then stick to it everyday.

4. Do not say yes to too many things. This may cause you to live in the priorities of others rather than according to your own. Everytime you agree to do something else,something else will not be done. Learn how to say no.

5. Avoid clutter. Clutter will get in the way of what you are doing.

6. Get started. This is one of the all time classic time wasters. Often as much ime is wasted avoiding anassignment, a task, or a project instead of accomplishing the project.

A survey showed that the main difference between great students and avarage students was their ability to start their home work.

7. Avoid procastination. First things first. Easy things and fun things come after wards.

8. Control interruptions and distructions.

9. Question eveything. Do not allow habits or emotions to keep you from eliminating items from your calender or to-do-list.

10. Set start and stop times. When arraging start times, also arrange stop times too.

This will call for some estimating but your estimate will imporve with practice. It will also allow you to better schedule your activities.

Food for thought: We all have 24 hours in a day. 8 hours to work/school, 8 hours to sleep. Where does the rest of the 8 hours go to? This is the thin line determines those who succeed and those who do not.

For you to understand the meaning of happiness, you must first understand how God created man.

Wh o is m an?

Man is a spirit being who possess a soul and lives in a body.

The spirit: It comprises of the communion,intuation and the conscience.

The spirit is the core of the human being. It is through the spirit that man can effectively commune with God.

The Soul: It comprises of the mind,the emotions and the will.

►► The mind: It is comprised of the reason, the imagination and the intellect. It is from the mind that you concieve ideas and get your life’s purpose,vision or dream. ►► The will: It is from the will that you are able to make choices and decisions. ►► The emotions: It comprises ofthe feelings, affections and desires.

Through your emotions you can build meanigful relationships.

The Body: It comprises of the five senses. Through the body you have the

sense of touch,smell,sight,hear and taste.

For example,our spirituality cannot compensate for our faliure to relate well with people or to exercise regularly and eating healthy.

This is because life has a way of throwing challenges at us. Ocassionally most things wount work and other times we are going to be knocked down over and over again.

When life knocks you down, bounce but do not break. That is the reselience. To be strong enough to get back on your feet quickly after a set back.

6. Develop self- Discipline

You should discipline yourself to do what you are supposed to do, when you are supposed to do it, whether you feel like or not.

To achieve the success you so desire,determine the price you will have to pay to get it and then resolve through self-discipline to pay that price.

Pay the price in full in terms of hard work and preparation so that you can get the rewards.

7. Develop Persistence

You have heard of the saying “Rome was not built in a day.� Anything meaningfull in life worth building takes time and effort therefore the need for persistence and patience.
