Summer’s here . . . ….so a warm welcome to our latest issue, which is bursting with things to do over the coming months. By popular demand we’re devoting this issue to holiday activities that don’t cost a fortune, and are fun for all the family. For many of us, this year will see a nostalgic return to the summers of our youth where limited choice and money meant we had to be creative about our days out. So, as well as our regular what’s on guide, we have the lowdown on local beaches, where to see live music with your children and family days out for under a tenner. Our local section is dedicated to news and information in your town and there’s a new kids' page full of child-friendly things to do, puzzles and activities. The magazine also features a wealth of information about local businesses. Buying local means more than just saving petrol – supporting local businesses keeps money in our towns and means independent and unique services continue to be available to other Kent families.

Botany Bay

Botany Bay is the most northerly of seven bays in Broadstairs. With a backdrop of chalk cliffs, this stunning sandy beach, is a popular family destination. There's free parking and access via steps or a ramp for wheelchairs and buggies. The beach has a kiosk, toilets, life guard cover in the summer, chalk reef with rock pools and is cleaned daily. A real hidden gem!

Beaches in Kent With the great British holiday making a resurgence this year, it’s good to know there are some cracking beaches within easy reach. Kent has 35 bays and beaches from Sheerness to Greatstone Beach on the Sussex border. so whether you’re day tripping or going for a local holiday, there’s a spot by the sea to suit you.

Dymchurch

If you want to make a trip to the beach even more of an adventure, take the miniature steam railway from Romney to Dymchurch (www.rhdr.org.uk). The beach is within easy reach of the station and as well as several miles of wide sandy beach there’s a large amusement park with indoor play area. A traditional family beach complete with donkey rides, sticks of rock and fish’n’chips.

Hythe

The historic Cinque Port town straddles the Royal Military Canal, built as a defence against the threat of invasion by Napoleon. Restaurants, antique dealers, small family-owned shops and historic buildings are features of the town and its old and narrow High Street. There is also an 11thcentury parish church famous for its vaults containing the bones of early settlers. Pack a picnic to relax on the banks of the canal. Or visit the large pebbly beach, which is a short, flat walk from the town. 4

www.kentmama.co.uk

Sandgate

With its high street of antique shops and cafés, Sandgate, situated between Folkestone and Hythe, is rather like Rochester by the sea. A long promenade stretches the 2.5km alongside the pebble beach and is great for family cycling or a leisurely walk. There are some stunning houses backing onto the beach including Sandgate Castle built by Henry VII. A smallish town, it’s an ideal spot if you want somewhere quieter and less commercial.

Joss Bay

One of the sandy bays in the Broadstairs area, Joss bay is the surfing capital of Kent. 200 metres long and flanked by white cliffs, it boasts a blue flag award for water quality. There are toilets, a café and the Joss Bay Surf School which runs surfing lessons throughout the summer and hires out boogie boards, wetsuits and surf boards. Take nets and buckets as there are plenty of rock pools when the tide goes out.

Folkestone

A short journey down the M20, Folkestone has undergone a recent makeover. The main beach is pebbly with plenty of rock pools but its vast size means there’s space for everyone. Beyond the beach, Leas Coastal Park is worth a visit. Farther round the bay is Sunny Sands, Folkestone’s only sandy beach and home to the annual sandcastle competition on July 12th, 2009.

Get Set for September September is a busy month, with a new term, new schools and new beginnings. Whether your child is starting school for the first time or moving up to secondary school, it helps to be prepared. We spoke to parents, teachers and pupils to find out what you can do to make the transition a smooth one. Starting primary school Many pre-schools and nurseries encourage learning through play, and this continues into their reception year. Most reception classes are brightly coloured, fun rooms with plenty of educational toys, games, puzzles and things-todo. So whilst the activities may be similar, the big change is being within in a noisy, busy school. Help your child prepare: l Show them how to make friends by doing it yourself. Talk to other people in the park or in shops. Watching you interact with others, provides them with a role model on how to build friendships. l Encourage you child’s social confidence by taking them to places where there is noise and other children. Eat out somewhere noisy too so that they can experience what the dinner hall may be like. 16

www.kentmama.co.uk

l Let your child practice taking turns. Either at the park or by inviting friends round. Show them how to resolve disputes by talking rather than pushing or snatching. Prompt them to reach a solution rather than you making the decision about who goes first. l The journey through school is about encouraging their independence. Prepare them by making sure they can go to the toilet alone. Buy a uniform that is easy to undo – belts and buckles can be tricky for a four year old. Teachers tell us that socks can be one of the hardest things to get back on after changing for PE, so consider buying the next size up so they are easier to slip on. l With lots of children in the class, they will be encouraged to recognise their name on lunchboxes, coat pegs and draws. Even if they don’t know all their letters yet, it’s useful to recognise the first letter of their name and the overall shape. Then they will be able to tell the difference between their name and one that has the same first letter but is shorter or longer. l The first few weeks can be very tiring for you child. Make sure they can cope with the demands of the day by setting a slightly earlier bedtime than usual. Don’t cram too much into the first few weekends so they can have some downtime. l And finally, don’t pass on your anxieties or any negative feelings you have about school onto your child. It’s important to listen to their concerns and worries, but staying up-beat and positive will give them the confidence to settle in.

Moving on up In Medway, 85 primary schools feed into just 18 secondary schools. So it stands to reason that one of the big changes will be the number of pupils at secondary school. It can be daunting going into such a large environment so you can help by building their self-esteem and making sure they don’t have to worry about the little details. l Make sure they have all the correct uniform, PE kit and any equipment they may need (pencil cases, calculator) etc so that they feel prepared. l If their journey to school involves walking somewhere new or going on a bus, take them through the journey several times beforehand. l Let them know they have your support. Take time to talk to them before school and when they get in, so they feel safe and able to voice their concerns. l Some anxieties are normal and most other new pupils will be experiencing similar worries. If you have friends with older children, it may help to ask them to talk to your child about how they found the move to secondary school. l Homework needs to be taken more seriously. Set aside a quiet space for them to work, and start establishing a routine by agreeing what time of the evening suits them best to do their schoolwork. l Take an interest in their lessons, homework, friendships etc so that you're more likely to Choosing a secondary school The start of the autumn term is also a busy time for children entering year 6. It’s at this stage that you and your child select the secondary school they will be going to the following year. Some schools require entrants to pass the Medway Test (11+).

education

notice if things aren’t going well. l Cut them some slack – they will be anxious and insecure at certain times and act out by behaving badly, feeling ill or saying they are unable to go to school. This is normal. Give them a chance to rest at weekends and get a good nights sleep to absorb all the new information and experiences.

Within the first two weeks back at school, all year 6 pupils will be given an information booklet. This contains application forms for the 11+ and secondary school selection. And also details of all the secondary schools in Medway, and their open days. The deadline for applying for the 11+ is September 18th and the exam takes place on October 17th. The results are back in time for your child to make their selection for secondary school by November 18th. It is very important to consider the oversubscription criteria for the schools you are interested in. Popular schools often have more students applying than there are places. How they choose the pupils who attend the school will depend on the criteria they set, which amongst other things, can include: distance from the school and whether you currently have another child at the school. You can view last year’s booklet online on the school admission pages on www. medway.gov.uk. Whilst the dates and some of the school details will be changing, it can give you an idea of which schools are in your catchement area and their oversubscription criteria. So that you can be prepared ahead of decision time in November. to advertise call 01634 814364

education

Boost your child’s reading skills school's out, but that doesn’t mean your child’s learning has to stop. there are many fun ways to help with reading that can be incorporated into everyday life. We spoke to terry Watson of kip mcgrath education centre, Walderslade, for tips on how to top up their skills at home.

How schools teach reading Schools use a mixture of phonics (sound – letter recognition) and ‘look and say’ (recognising and remembering whole words). Recently, the government issued new recommendations on a more structured approach to reading. Medway Council has adopted these in its Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing programmes for schools.

“Learning to read

is one of the most important stages in your child’s education. We’re often asked how schools teach reading and what parents can do to support their child.” Children will be taught to recognise the 44 English speech sounds (phonemes), and the various ways these can be represented by letters (graphemes). Children are taught that these sounds can be put together to pronounce a word e.g. c-a-t becomes cat. This process where the sounds are taught first and then blended into a word is called synthetic phonics. Also, teachers will encourage children to listen attentively so they can recognise individual 18

www.kentmama.co.uk

sounds within a word, such as the sh in c-r-a-sh. A child should be able to separate out or segment a word like crash into its four parts or phonemes. This is called analytical phonics. What you can do It’s vital to encourage an enjoyment of language in all its forms. l Spend time talking about what you see, do and hear together and encourage contribution in family conversations. l Play language games like ‘I Spy’ or connection games like ‘I packed my bag and in it I put’. l Have books and magazines at home so your child can see that you enjoy reading. l Make story books even more fun by acting them out or using different voices for the characters. Then ask your child questions about what you have just read. Listening to sounds Schools focus on speaking and listening skills in order to help children build a good vocabulary, learn to listen attentively and speak clearly and confidently. In today’s world there is a great deal of white noise from the street, TV and music, which can make listening difficult for young children. To reduce background noise try a listening walk in the park or countryside. Can they tell you what sounds they heard and in what order? Copying sounds you hear

like ‘quack-quack’ and’ ‘shhhhhh’ or singing nursery rhymes and songs will help your child develop a sound bank and memory skills. Try breaking down simple words when you ask questions such as ‘Can you find your h-a-t?’ Boosting their reading skills really can be fun for all the family! Kip McGrath is a structured English and Maths tuition programme for children aged 6-16. Terry says: “We reflect the key features used in schools today and use a clearly defined, systematic and multi-sensory approach in our teaching. Learning is fun and children grow in confidence.” For more information or to arrange a free assessment at their Walderslade Centre, contact Terry Watson on 01634 201777 or visit www.kipmed.co.uk.

Think trampolining is just for kids? Well Gillingham’s Jumpers Centre and Medway Council don’t. They are offering subsidised sessions for grown ups who come along with a child so that you can try your hand at seat drops, straddles and pikes alongside the kids. All adults must be accompanied by a child and the sessions cost £1 per person. Jumpers Rebound Centre is the only purpose-built trampolining centre in the UK and holds regular sessions for pre-schoolers, children and adults. The special £1 sessions take place between 3 and 4pm on Saturday July 11th and August 22nd. Contact them on 01634 855507 or www.trampoline.co.uk

Following a closely fought battle on Meridian TV, Spinners Acre Junior School in Lordswood won £50,000 of Big Lottery funding in the People’s Millions contest. Voted for by viewers, the school was selected to receive cash for a community wildlife project. That was back in November 2008. Now, after eight months of hard work, the wildlife cabin has been built in the school’s woodland area. Run by the school, and centre manager Kym Ball, it’s a resource for all the community with activities, events and after-school clubs. Says Kym: “I grew up in the country but when I moved to Medway I realised how few opportunities children have to interact with plants and wildlife. And they can actually become scared of it. Nature can be used in all aspects of the school curriculum and, given the opportunity, children are fascinated by bugs and creepy crawlies.” Due to open in the summer Kym’s Nature Hut will be running Monday to Saturday holiday courses from 10am-6pm. You can book a morning or afternoon session, full day or whole week. There will also be weekend classes and events, after-school clubs in the autumn term and a wildlife-themed birthday party package. For details and prices call Kym Ball on 01634 831640.

Medway news Medway ne Lessons in Healthy Eating We all know we should eat better but translating books and articles into practical family dinners can be difficult. So experienced personal trainer and nutritionist Laura Church is starting one-day cookery courses for groups of friends. Run from her private fitness centre in Rainham, with a fully fitted family kitchen, the course will teach you what foods you should be eating and give you hands-on practice at cooking healthy and delicious meals. Says Laura: “Eating the right foods will make you feel full up, give you bags of energy and improve your and your family's health.” Laura recommends doing the string test – place a piece of string round your waist so that both ends meet, after a meal check that the ends of the string still come together. If they don’t then you have eaten something that your body is finding difficult to digest, hence the bloating. For more information about the courses, contact Laura Church on 07768 401217 or visit www.laurachurch.com

three months, have only recently started coming to the group. Amelia said: “I am so glad I gave Step4ward a try because these sessions give such great support to younger parents. It also gives us access to free childcare while we attend courses that are arranged through the sessions.” Step4ward Plus In September, Medway Council will be launching Step4ward Plus. This more structured group aims to provide young parents with the support to achieve their full potential in their work, studies and home life.

Giddy Up

Is your youngster animal mad? Knights Place Farm, a professional riding school and livery on the outskirts of Strood, offers riding classes for pre-schoolers. Charlie aged 3 (pictured) is a regular at the classes. “He’s always loved horses,” says his mum “and this was one of the few places that would take him aged two. The staff are very friendly. Charlie always brings carrots for the horses and has a look round before the lesson starts. It’s great value and he’d come every day if he could!” Situated away from main roads and surrounded by fields and woodlands, rides vary each week between the indoor and outside school and wooded area. Children are led on their horses and taught fun exercises to build their confidence and improve their balance and control. Classes cost £5 and have a maximum of six children. They run on a drop-in basis throughout the year including the summer holidays. To find out more contact Knights Place Farm (near the Three Crutches roundabout in Strood) on 01474 824333, 07782 646532 or visit www.kpfriding.co.uk.

Built to last

When it comes to toys, if you’re looking for quality rather than quantity then you’re not alone. Wooden toys have undergone a huge resurgence in the last six months as parents shun the latest gimmicks and flashy packaging in favour of built-to-last toys that fire children’s imaginations. Gillingham-based Tots’n’Toys have a fabulous range of wooden toys, garden games, puppets and dress up outfits. Tracy Mayhead who set up the business four years ago with her husband Brett says: “Parents tell us that toys like building blocks and wooden construction sets get played with for years. But we think the real reason for their popularity is that with wooden toys, children really are playing, rather than simply being entertained or distracted.” Naughty but nice wooden ice cream set £7.49, cake stand £14.99, ladybird outfit £18.99, Parrot mobile £10.99 and cash register £22.99 available with free delivery from www.totsntoys.co.uk

There’s a lot of bad press about computers and children. But, as Nicole Taylor, a mum of three from Rochester, discovered, they can be used in a positive way to teach toddlers and preschoolers numbers, letters and shapes, and enable them to explore their creativity. With a long career in education, Nicole had previously published a book entitled ICT for Learners with Special Needs. While working she realised her two year old was fascinated by the computer. After taking some precautions and setting up the workspace, she began using the computer to improve his hand eye co-ordination, recognise letters on the keyboard and onscreen and learn shapes and colour. Using her knowledge and experience, she has now written a book to help adults teach computer skills to young children. Rather than just the obvious online games for pre-schoolers she gives suggestions and ideas about more interactive ways to help your child learn and also practical tips on safeguarding your child and your computer. Postnatal depression: what you need to know in years gone by, many parents had extended family around them – people to scoop up baby, and to help and encourage mum. We all have days when we feel blue, but for one in ten new mums its more than a passing feeling: postnatal depression can have a real effect on their quality of life. What are the symptoms of postnatal depression (PND)? Most mums feel tired sometimes, or experience guilt and anxiety to some degree. But postnatal depression is a depressed mood which doesn’t lift. Unfortunately, many mums are never treated; they may be coping, but their enjoyment of life can be seriously affected. According to the Royal College of Psychiatrists other symptoms include: Irritability Sleeplessness Loss of appetite Lack of enjoyment Inability to cope Guilt Anxiety

help,” says Gillingham-based counsellor Louise Milne (07910 840112). “A woman’s mum might think her daughter could really do with a cleaner, or a babysitter, but she might not actually want this. It may help in the short run, but not lift the depression.”

What can partners, relatives or friends do? “If people would really listen, without rushing in with solutions, that would really

and take a friend or your partner with you. Don’t carry on in the hope it will go away; get the help you deserve. “Getting in touch with other mums can really help,” says Louise. “You don’t have to pretend everything is OK.” Health visitors have lists of local and national organisations that can help, and can advise you on local support groups. Is there a difference between ‘baby blues’ and PND? Baby blues affects most new

One mums story…

“I had two children, aged 5 and 3. I’d just started to get my life back and had a part-time job. So when I unexpectedly fell pregnant again, I knew it would mean losing my independence. After the birth I tried to carry on as normal. I wanted to prove to myself that having a baby wouldn’t affect my life. I tried to be supermum. And failed. Six months after my daughter was born I felt emotionally numb. Nothing was fun. I started to fall behind on the housework, I cried very easily and most days I didn’t want to get out of bed. Everything seemed dark, and I couldn’t see anything positive about my life. Unfortunately I didn’t seek help. I hadn’t had PND with my previous children so at the time I just thought my life was rubbish, rather than something was wrong with me. As an experienced mum with two older children, friends and family assumed I was fine and coping with another baby. Looking back I was depressed for about a year and it was only as my daughter got older and I gained back some of my former life, that I felt better. Once I was well, I could see how unhappy I had been. I wish I had spoken to my health visitor or doctor but I was just too embarrassed to admit I wasn’t coping. I didn’t think there would be anything they could do. I felt it was my own fault and I didn’t deserve to be happy. It seems daft now. But I wish I had got help because it cast a shadow over what should have been a happy time with my new baby.”

Help mums some time in the first week after birth; it can last a few hours or days. The main sign is tearfulness and a feeling of coming down to earth with a bump. It doesn’t need any treatment other than support from the people around you.

Contact with a volunteer can be by phone or post. The association also runs a support service for partners and families of the depressed mother.

Having a baby is a lifechanging, hormone-altering, mind-blowing thing. If you feel you may have PND, you are completely normal and lots of women reach out for help – even if we don’t always see it.

Kids party food made easy it’s the little extras that make kids parties special. they don’t have to Be expensive. sometimes all it takes is a little preparation and imagination…especially When it comes to food.

Perfect Planning l Timing is vital if you don’t want to be left with mountains of food. Kids will probably eat a lot at parties held over lunchtime or late in the afternoon. Between 2-4pm, they’re only likely to want snacks. So plan your menu according to how much your children normally eat at that time of day. l Some children may have allergies. Avoid any problems on the day by checking with their parents in advance. l Kids like a mixture of savoury and sweet foods. Allow 3-4 savoury choices and 2-3 sweet choices per child. l Try to relax, your children will enjoy it much more if you do.

Mess-Free Eating

Happy-meal type, party food boxes are wonderful. Before the party, pack the boxes with crisps, a carton of drink and sandwiches or rolls. And afterwards all the mess gets bundled back into the box. If you’re short of table space, spread out a bright cloth or blanket and have a picnic. Works just as well indoors, as it does out in the garden. Give younger kids their drinks in a sports bottle with their name on. They're more likely to need regular drinks and the bottles will save on washing up. Children always drink more than you think and eat less that you imagine they will. So scale down the amount of food but make sure you have plenty of juice, water and squash.

Party ideas, where’s food’s the star! Pizza making party Leave the hard work to the kids by setting up a pizza making station. They’ll have great fun

making and decorating a pizza and you’ll get the food prepared for you. Older children can make the dough from scratch or use a packet mix. Spread out bowls of toppings and they can design their dinner. Have a prize for the most imaginative! Create a Cake Cupcakes are an easy party bag alternative to messy slices. Decorate with sprinkles, marshmallows, icing pens, or edible glitter.

38

www.kentmama.co.uk

Pick a theme Older girls like grownup glamour. So throw a four-course dinner party, with fruity cocktails and candles, and they’ll feel like party VIPs. Boys might enjoy a pizza and games console party? Or rent the latest film on dvd, dim the lights and serve popcorn in traditional boxes.

In Victorian times the mile-long promenade was a place to see and be seen as you strolled past hotels and galleries admiring the view to France. Nowadays you can experience the old and the new by taking the Leas Cliff lift (one of the oldest water balanced cliff lifts in the country) down to the Lower Leas Coastal Park. Here you will find the biggest free children’s adventure playgrounds in the southeast with wooden forts, pirate ships, zip lines and diggers. Set in beautifully landscaped gardens, there are plenty of picnic areas. Or head to Mermaids beachside bar café for one of their homemade ice cream floats.

Adults £3, children £2 As well as its practical function as a reservoir, Bewl Water is also a top family destination. Their split-level playground has wooden forts, towers, bridges and a tree house. A huge embankment slide goes down to the lower level while ascending wooden towers with interconnecting bridges allow the journey back up. A new play area for younger children is now within sight of the picnic area. And this spring they have started offering adrenaline adventure activities for children over seven. These include a giant 40ft zip wire, power fan, 3G swing and hydroballing (giant inflated spheres). Activities are priced individually and start at £3. Open from 9am. www.bewl.co.uk

Health, weight, educational development, social skills, oral health. The mental checklist we have for our children can seem vast. Yet when it comes to their teeth, you don’t get many second chances. “It’s easy to underestimate the long-term consequences of bad dental hygiene,” says Dr Adesanya, principal dentist at a family dental practice on Watling Street, in Gillingham. “You only get one set of adult teeth and damage to them in childhood can lead to a lifetime of expensive dental treatment. So children and parents need to understand the importance of good oral hygiene from an early age to prevent damage later on.” 0-3 years The Department of Health guidance suggests babies visit their dentist at six months old or when their first tooth appears, whichever is earliest. The dentist can check that teeth are coming through in the right place and at the correct time. Limit surgary snacks and drinks (such as fruit juice) to meal times and switch from dummies and bottles to tooth-friendly cups. Brush 42

delicate teeth twice a day and if you’re giving them any medicine, make sure it’s sugar-free. 3-10 years This is a dynamic period of change in the mouth area as adult teeth begin to emerge. Children need to be taught how to brush their teeth correctly. Dentists recommend that parents brush their child’s teeth until the age of six years and visit the dentist at least twice a year. It’s important to check for hidden decay in adult teeth and act quickly. At this stage dentists can look for early signs of children who may need braces and monitor new teeth coming through. We reassure parents that some pain is normal when new teeth appear and explain the cycle of what happens when new teeth emerge. 11-15 years The independence associated with starting secondary school

can lead to lapses in dental hygiene. Parents tell us their children eat healthily at home but it’s also important to consider what they’re eating on the way to and from school. A can of fizzy drink and a chocolate bar creates an acid environment in the mouth leaving teeth prone to decay and cavities. Brushing immediately afterwards doesn’t help as the abrasive action of the toothbrush can leave the tooth surface more exposed. Regular visits to the dentist reinforces the message that prevention is better than cure. Maintain a routine of brushing twice daily and using fluoridated toothpaste. Age 16+ Unfortunately we see a big leap in decay among young adults. Maintaining good dental hygiene is sometimes difficult with a busy social life! Over 18s who are not in full-time education will start paying for their own dental treatment, but it is important that teenagers continue to visit the dentist regularly to prevent future damage. Dental care is free from NHS registered dentists for children under 18s, and over 18s in full-time education. It is recommended that children visit their dentist every six months or more often if their dentist thinks they have a high risk of developing tooth decay. Dr Olurotimi Adesanya is the principal dentist at Watling Street Dental Care in Gillingham. They currently have NHS vacancies for children and their families and have a dedicated oral health promoter who can advise parents on tooth brushing, good oral hygiene and dietary advice to prevent cavities. For more information visit www. watlingstreetdental.co.uk or call 01634 576688.

Make a Sports Day in your back garden! Design your own wacky assault course and challenge your mates to some sporty fun. Set up a makeshift cargo net by placing some books on a sheet or blanket, then tunnel through to the other side on your tummy.

What is Seaweed?

Seaweeds can be slimy, hard, delicious (although some are poisonous and can make you very sick), have rainbow colours or have weird names like dead man's fingers and cactus weed. There are thousands of different species throughout the world's oceans but they are all simple plants with no roots or flowers. Because they don't have roots they need a firm surface, such as a rock, to grow on. All animal life in the sea is in some way linked to marine plants and seaweed is essential to ocean health. They are important to us humans too; some 400 species of seaweed are used by people around the world for food, medicines and fertilisers for crops.

Follow the trail

Be creative with your props. You can jump through hoops, kick a ball into a bucket or put on a pair of your mum’s wellies and hop along. Make gymkhana-style jumps with boxes or garden canes (be careful of the tips). Set them low to jump or higher to limbo under. Short of space? Think 3D. Get racers to stack boxes or pots, put on a pile of clothing or walk while balancing objects on their heads. Wetter the better. Everyone likes water, so incorporate some into your obstacle course with water bombs, water pistols and buckets with bobbing apples.

sixteen different types of bat in Britain? Twelve of them have been recorded in Kent by the Kent Bat Group. The most exciting is the Serotine bat, which is only found in the south of England. Wild ideas

By Kym Ball

Going for a walk in the park, countryside or a nearby woodlands is not only cheap – it’s great fun. So here are just a few of the ideas I use with local school kids to get you outside and into nature… Snap happy Use your pocket money to buy a throwaway camera and you could be a budding wildlife photographer for the day. Pretend you’re a bug.. Lie down on the floor and take pictures up through the leaves and plants to capture what the world looks like from a bug's-eye view. Or crawl through the grass looking up at trees and fences. Ugly trees Study the shapes on trees and stumps. Can you find one that looks like something else? Take pictures of the gnarliest branches and trees you can find.

Naturally nature You might be lucky and get the perfect picture of a woodland creature, bird or beetle. Or some beautiful flowers (they stay still longer than animals!). Remember it’s your project so take pictures of whatever you want! When you’re done, get the photos developed and you can create your own nature album with notes, drawings, leaves and feathers. If you used a digital camera why not create an album on your computer? Most importantly, have fun seeing nature from a different angle.
