New term, new name. Welcome to Kent Family Magazine . . . Five years ago, with babes in arms, we launched Kent Mama magazine. Little did we know that over time the magazine would grow to a print run of 37,000 and be read by mums, dads, grandparents, parents-to-be and those with teenagers. The start of the new school year is a new beginning for some – new schools, new jobs, new classes. And we felt it was time to update our name to better reflect you, our readers.

packed lunches “Don’t over estimate how much packed lunch they can manage to eat at lunchtime when they start in Reception. When I’d quiz Emma about why she hadn’t yummed up the tasty titbits I had lovingly prepared, she’d say plaintively, “I didn’t have enough time”. After a few weeks we had a frank chat and cut it back to a drink, a sandwich and fruit for break. Having less to think about and manipulate seemed to result in more getting eaten.” rachel Kerr, mum to emma, rochester 8

pre-school “We borrowed books from the library about children going to school so my daughter Poppy got used to the concept. We had some friends who already went to pre-school so we collected them a few times so Poppy understood about being left and then picked up a bit later.” jane Howes, Walderslade

www.kentfamilymagazine.co.uk

evening meals “Once the afterschool clubs start up again, all that ferrying around cuts down on the time you have to prepare an evening meal. The best thing I have ever bought is a slow cooker on ebay for £15. I put cheap cuts of meat in with vegetables, seasoning and some water in the morning and come home to amazing stews, curries etc. Obviously it's not an everyday thing (there are only so many casseroles you can make before the children start begging for chips!) but it can be really helpful when you know you’ll be busy after school.” suzanne parrish, mum of 2, rochester

tiredness “Many new starters at school will be tired and often fall asleep as soon as they get home (or to the childminders). It does get better, but in the meantime parents need to think about how to avoid them napping too long then not sleeping at bedtime! Having an early tea as soon as they get home means they can go straight to bed and will often sleep til morning. Plan meals in advance that are quick to prepare. If your child is has school dinners, make a cold snack beforehand and leave it ready in the fridge. If the weather's nice have it for a picnic on the way home. The fresh air might boost their energy.” suzy coughtrey, childminder, Gillingham

secondary school “After being there for a few weeks it occurred to me that I would be there for the next seven years, that’s when I felt really sad. I missed my old school and friends. I had expected to make new friends really quickly but it actually takes time for friendships to happen. A year on and I now have some great friends so don’t worry if you don’t make friends instantly. It will happen; it may just take time.” caitlin smith, aged 12, rochester

11+ The Results this year the Medway test and Kent test both took place in september. While families await the results, we spoke to parents whose children took the exam last year.

“The 11+ is uniquely stressful. We tried to avoid the whirlpool of anxiety by outlining a Plan B. We pictured the situation if our child did not pass and planned for it in a positive way just as we planned and practised for taking the 11+. We talked about these options as a family to help put the exam into perspective. After all, it is only one day in a child’s life.” pernille richards, mum of 2, Headcorn “Don’t be tempted to look at the email or open the envelope without your child present, they have put the work in, they deserve to be there to get the news, good or bad. Don’t quote scores. If they passed they don’t need to know by how much; if they didn’t the same is true.

A child’s intense pride at passing can be shattered by a comment such as: 'My mum says you only scraped through’. Once results are out, move on. It will not shape the rest of their lives no matter how important it has seemed over the previous months.“ Bridget Haddican, mum of 2, tunbridge Wells We rewarded our son for doing his best when he did the exam– rather than promising him gifts if he passed. It’s important they know you are proud of them whatever the outcome. After the results, things move on surprisingly quickly at school. A handful of children passed but there were many who didn’t, so there is no shame in not passing. It’s likely there will be others from their class going to the same school as them, so look forward in a constructive way to where they will be going to, rather than dwelling on where they could have gone.” p roberts, dad of 3, chatham

Number crunching How to help your child with maths and make it part of everyday life. by Inge Watson Maths is like Marmite – you either love it or hate it! But add in new terminology and teaching methods such as number bonds and number lines and it can be doubly confusing. We spoke to Inge Watson of Kip McGrath Medway, a qualified teacher, and asked how parents can help their children be maths confident.

How is maths taught at primary school? We speak to a lot of parents who want to help their children but realise that maths is taught differently compared with their school days. The biggest development is that children are taught that there is

Partitioning involves splitting up a number into more manageable parts. For example, when adding 22+23 you can add 20+20 and 2+3 separately and then add the results together to reach the final answer. 12

Number Bonds are pairs of numbers which, when added together, make up each number. I.e. The number bonds for five are 1+4, 2+3, 0+5. more than one way to do subtraction, addition, multiplication and division. They are encouraged to learn a variety of methods so that they can choose to solve a problem in the way they think is best.

Mental maths There is a strong emphasis on mental maths in primary schools. Mental maths means solving a maths problem in your head. Children are encouraged to learn tables, halving, doubling, rounding up or down and number bonds by heart and use these facts to help solve problems. In the classroom this can involve singing times tables or playing games in a circle where children shout out

answers to maths questions. The teaching is often very practical, with work also being done in small groups. Children are encouraged to work with others and discuss their findings with their classmates and teachers. In younger years, the maths teaching is very visual with pictures being used to help

How parents can help? It’s not surprising that many parents feel reluctant to help their children in case they do things the wrong way. But there are many practical things that can be done so that children can gain confidence and grow to enjoy maths.

children complete simple sums by counting on or counting back. l Kip McGrath Education Centre in Walderslade provides English, Maths and 11+ tuition for children aged 6-16. For more information, or to find our about their upcoming open days, call 01634 201777 or visit www. kipmed.co.uk

Did you know: That Rochester and Gillingham adult education centres run FREE Skills For Life courses for adults in maths and English. These take place during daytime and evenings and run at a pace to suit you. For more information, visit your local adult education centre or call 01634 338400.

l Games like Snakes and Ladders, Dominoes and Monopoly are a fun way to learn to count, add up and score. l Cooking is a fantastic way to learn about weights, measurement and ratio, as is helping with putting up a shelf or decorating a bedroom. l Sharing a pizza is a tasty method to introduce fractions, decimals and percentages l Giving your child pocket money will help them to add up whether they can afford a particular toy or game. l Use both analogue and digital clocks with your child to work out how long their favourite TV programme is. l Draw objects using triangles, squares or other geometric patterns. l If you are on a car journey, your children can add up the numbers on the licence plates of the cars they see. There are a multitude of opportunities around us to encourage children to have fun with numbers. into the trap of feeling the need to get too ‘whizz bang’. Children can try on parts of suits of armour, explore what it was like for sailors in various eras, and the information desk can suggest family activities and trails to follow. Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre

An ideal first stop is the Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre. Part of The Old Royal Naval College, it gives a great overview of Greenwich and its part in London, and England’s, history. There are lots of hands-on activities, and the information is well presented and quite in-depth: the centre manages to make it engaging without falling 16

Many Kent families are keen to take advantage of our proximity to London by visiting free attractions such as the Science Museum or Natural History Museum. However, a family-friendly hidden gem that is often overlooked is Greenwich. Situated within easy to reach from Kent by train or car, it can also be reached from central London by the Docklands Light Railway, bus or river boat.

closer than you think, and with lots for all the family to enjoy, this hidden gem makes a great day out.

A walk up a steep hill will bring you to one of Greenwich’s most famous attractions - the Royal Observatory - which is frankly amazing (and like Discover Greenwich, it’s free). If you have young children with you it is probably best to concentrate on one of the two galleries for a single visit. The Astronomy Galleries are a mix of interesting hands-on activities and static displays. Even if your children have never shown an interest in anything astronomically related, they are sure to find something here that interests them. The other half of the

Royal Observatory, the Time Galleries, concentrates on telling the story of the Meridian Line, and time in general. The Observatory often runs free activities targeted at families.

Greenwich Market

There are plenty of other things to do in Greenwich, making it a place you can come back to visit again and again. The National Maritime Museum takes in not just the Observatory but also galleries

concerned with Maritime exploration, art and history. The ‘village’ of Greenwich itself is very pleasant and well worth a stroll around. And one of my favourite, if bizarre things to do when in Greenwich is to walk under the Thames to the Isle of Dogs via the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. Kids enjoy the slight spookiness of it and marvel at the thought they are walking under the river! So whether your family is interested in art, open spaces, pretty things to look at or architecture, Greenwich has something for everyone.

Crafts, food, homewares, art and fresh produce are all available at the famous Greenwich Market – currently celebrating it’s 25th anniversary. Situated in the centre of the oneway system, it is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5:30pm. With a fantastic range of unusual bits and bobs for children and adults alike it’s a great place to buy gifts, pick up some food-to-go or browse the many independent stalls. Real life

★ Little

Stars

We all tHInK our oWn cHIldren are BeautIful. But soMe parents feel tHeIr cHIldren Have WHat It taKes to Be Models. We spoKe to MuM-of-tHree sHIfan salIH froM GIllInGHaM to fInd out tHe HIGHs and loWs of cHIld ModellInG. Why did you get into child modelling? We moved to Medway about eight years ago with our children Riza (13) and Omer (6). But it wasn’t until my daughter Alara was born in 2008 that the whole modelling thing came about. During my pregnancy I looked through lots of magazines full of beautiful babies in adverts and thought I’d give it a try. A friend who had been a child model herself recommended an agency, so when Alara was just 4 months old I sent them some pictures of her that I’d taken at home. To my delight they replied asking to meet us, as they felt Alara’s look was what clients in the industry were searching for.

★ s ’ m u m e n O

f o e c n e i r e exp child g n i l l e mod

How much time do you spend on modelling? Alara’s fi rst year was extremely busy. The castings came flooding in almost immediately from magazines such as Practical Parenting 26

Shifan Salih’s son, Omer

www.kentfamilymagazine.co.uk

do your other children model? My eldest detests having his picture taken, so it was a no for him. But my son Omer loves the camera and is a real character. We signed him up with Beckenhambased www. bonnieandbetty. com last August and he has already secured a supporting part in Clash of the Titans, starring Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes. Fortunately, his role as a street urchin made the final cut and we proudly watched him at the cinema. His school has been very supportive of his extra hobby but we are very clear that his education must come first.

do your children enjoy it? Omer loved meeting famous people and being on set. There were lots of other

children there so he got to hang out, make friends and play dress up. The modelling world is not for everyone and is definitely not as glamorous as it seems.

How much does it cost and what can you earn? Not all casting directors pay for your travel so you can find yourself paying out for train fares and petrol. As children can only work a certain amount of hours, the agency will need to get a children’s entertainments/film licence from the your local council and a doctor's assessment that your child is fit to work, both of which you need to organise and pay for. Agencies charge an annual fee to keep you on their books; this can be between £40-£125. The agency also takes a small commission from each job. On the plus side, earnings can range from £50-£85 per hour up to £400 per day.

How do you handle the rejection?

Do’s and Don’ts

don’t reply to adverts Genuine agencies RARELY advertise. They always operate via word of mouth. Personally I would avoid replying to ads offering to make your child a star or attending hotel auditions. They are often just a way to make you part with money.

never give money without a meeting

Don’t sign a contract or give money without fi rst meeting the agency. I would suggest sending photos to a few different agencies to see what the response is like and choose the agency that feels right for you and your child.

do l Open a bank account in your child’s name. Most agencies will insist they pay your child directly. l Make sure your child is happy in front of a camera, is well mannered and is polite to adults. This is a definite plus for working with casting directors! l Make sure your child’s school approves. l Visit www.albamodel. info for independent advice, tips and information about modeling. l Use online forums such as Netmums baby and child modelling thread for advice.

If a client does not select your child for a job then you have to understand that your child was not what they were looking for, and not think that your child was unattractive or ugly. Sometimes clients go for unusual or quirky -looking children with a lot of character, rather than a traditionally pretty look. It all depends on the role they want that child to play so you shouldn’t take it personally if they don’t pick your child. When you see your child in a commercial or magazine it makes you very proud. But, models or not, they will always be our little stars!

and Mother & Baby, and also for commercials for Johnson & Johnson, SMA, Calpol, and many more. We found ourselves trotting up to London once or twice a month for castings. I treated it as a day out. Instead of sitting around at home or going for walks locally I would snuggle her up in her pushchair and go to the West End or Central London. We would often spend nearly an hour and a half trying to get to the casting only for them to take a couple of snapshots of her, say thank you and goodbye, and the whole casting process would be over in just 10 minutes!

Medway maternity & toddler talk Home Birth support Group Mum of two, Frances Bryce, of NCT Medway has launched a new Home Birth Support Group for parents-to-be in Medway. Meeting monthly at Temple Mill Children’s Centre, Strood the group aims to provide information and support to parents

considering a home birth. Says Frances: “every birth is different so the meetings are a great opportunity to talk to other parents. The dads tend to want to know about the practical details; setting things up, birthing pools, keeping things clean. While the mums-to-be are more interested in the birthing process and, if they have other children, how to deal with siblings during the birth”. Next meeting is on 23rd October, 10 am–12 noon. Baby Bounce and rhyme at Medway libraries

It has been just over 12 months since our beautiful daughter Freya was born, and what a year it’s been. After a few weeks, my husband Peter and I had covered the basics; we could change nappies, bathe, feed and clothe her, but what were we going to ‘do’ with our tiny bundle of joy? With Pete back at work, where could I go with a pram, nappies and the hundred 36

other things that you need in the world of parenthood? Just leaving the house felt like a daunting task. But as the year progressed, I gradually learnt of the many varied activities and places to visit with a baby, and I even managed to make some friends along the way. So to help all new mums out there, here is my top five list of things to do with under 1s in Medway . . .

www.kentfamilymagazine.co.uk

‘Incy Wincy Spider’, ‘Humpty Dumpty’ and ‘Wind the Bobbin Up’ are just a few nursery rhymes sung by the doting mums and dads to their babies in this fun, interactive group. Lasting for half an hour and completely free, this is a great way to make friends. Refreshments are provided afterwards and parents are welcome to stay and chat while the babies play with the toys. shorne country park

2

When the sun is shining, this is the perfect place to meet with friends, have a picnic and relax. Entry is free, with only a charge for parking (weekdays £2.00, weekends £2.50) and there is something for everyone. There are different coloured ‘routes’ around the park that you can take, 288 acres to be exact, all push chair friendly and there is an adventure playground for older children along with a smaller play park for younger ones. There is plenty of wildlife to point out and enjoy as well. There's an eco-friendly visitor centre and cafe. And keep an eye out for special events and activities that run throughout the year.

newbies cinema screening

3

This is a real treat for the adults as well as the children. Odeon Cinema in Chatham runs a special screening for parents and babies. You can see a new release film with your baby (rated 12A or lower) every Tuesday morning. Only parents/carers and their babies are allowed entry, and

the volume is lowered and the lights raised slightly. The best thing is no-one minds if the babies make a noise! This is particularly good for babies six months and under; Freya was mesmerised by the colourful images on the big screen and it often sent her to sleep!

This is the hidden gem of Medway. The safe, enclosed gardens, along with the delightful tearooms and friendly staff make for the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the high street. I always

take a blanket, spread it out on the manicured lawn and enjoy a cup of coffee while Freya crawls around and basks in the beautiful surroundings. It’s well worth a visit and the cakes and lunches are delicious too.

under 1s group run by surestart children’s centres

These are an informal groups, specifically designed for carers with under 1s. There are plenty of toys for the babies, and the friendly staff are always at hand with advice or just to chat. I really enjoyed the group I attended in Rochester, as it was a great way to meet carers who had babies the same age, and have a cup of coffee while comparing notes and sharing experiences. Most Sure Start Children’s Centres in Medway run similar groups so pop along to your nearest centre to find out what is available near you.

Parenting

One location for family information Medway’s Family information Service (FIS) is changing. Kent Family spoke to Esther Olawande, Family Information Service Manager for Medway Council, to find out more.

The FIS has always been known as a resource for sourcing childcare in Medway, how is it changing? There have been two main changes, the Government’s vision for the service and the way in which local parents, our customers, want the information. All nurseries, childminders and pre-schools must be Ofsted registered and we hold all their details so we are still the best resource for Medway parents looking for childcare. The exciting news is that we now hold information on all aspects of parenting and family life for parents with children from 0-20 years old. And this information is available 24/7 online at www.medwayfisd.com 40

How would you sum up your new service? We provide information, advice and guidance on local childcare provision and related services to support parents who are working or looking to go back to work. We also provide information about all aspects of parenting and on children’s activities in Medway. Our service covers children up to age 20, and up to 25 in the case of children with special needs.

You’ve launched a new online directory. What does that contain? Nowadays parents use the Internet a lot more to search for information about family life because it’s convenient and they can get the information when they want

www.kentfamilymagazine.co.uk

instead of just during working hours. The objective of the website is to be a parent knowhow directory. It replaces other local directories such as childcare link and the Positive Parenting Network (PPN), giving parents one location to meet all their needs. The website is split into ‘zones’ with tailored information for each group from things to do in the children’s zone to money matters and employment legislation in the parents’ and carers’ zone. We have a young people’s zone which links to the MixitOnline website (www. mixitonline.co.uk) with activities and advice for teenagers and young people in Medway.

‘‘

Do you have a current focus at the moment? We are doing a lot of outreach work to make parents aware of the changes in Government policy with regard to benefits. New legislation has come in which means that parents claiming income support will be actively encouraged to seek work once their child reaches the age of 8 and they will be switched to job seekers allowance. We can give advice to all parents, on a range of childcare options, rights of working parents and help to work out the financial implications of going back to work. Many people don’t

Nowadays parents use the Internet a lot more to search for information about family life because it’s convenient and they can get the information when they want. Can parents still call you? Yes, we have a team of staff who can deal with telephone enquiries weekdays between 9am and 5pm. Most of our telephone enquiries are regarding childcare, after school care and playschemes for the school holidays; however, we can also provide information on activities for children, playgroups and family support. We also receive a lot of enquiries via email. Our main role is a signposting service. Our team doesn’t provide the end service but, for example, if you wanted to find out about information on child tax credits or respite care for a disabled child – then we would know where to direct your enquiry.

’’

realise they have certain rights to flexible working hours if their child is under 16 years old and special leave if a child falls ill. Our advice to parents looking to return to work is – don’t rule anything out. There are many childcare options available including overnight care, term-time care, childcare to fit shift patterns and full-time care. Parents should look at childcare at the same time as looking for work. For more information about Medway’s Family Information Service visit www.medwayfisd.com or telephone the team on 01634 335566

Business

Be your own boss

A local mum’s guide to party planning

These days it seems it’s not enough to just be a mum – now you have to be a mumpreneur too. For many parents working for yourself can be the ideal solution to the work/life balance but it can be hard work, with no guarantees your business will succeed. One option is to work as a self-employed consultant for one of the many party plan businesses that operate in the UK. So we spoke to Rochester mum, Elizabeth Moody, who has a team of consultants in Medway and Kent, to ask for her tips on working as a party plan agent.

Elizabeth Moody Mum-of-two Elizabeth Moody (07770 888720) says: “I wanted something that was my own, but didn’t want to have to start from scratch. So I looked into becoming a party planner. I needed a business that could fit in with my family and would 42

be easy to get started”. It transpired that Elizabeth was very good at it. “Last year I moved to a new company, Jamie at Home, and I love it. People contact me to host a party in their home and I go along, have fun meeting new people and sell some great products at the same time. Like Jamie, the business is very fresh and dynamic. I work at my own pace and fit it in around my commitments. I now have a team of consultants covering the whole of Kent, Surrey and the South Coast. A lot are mums who want a few hours outside the home to be themselves again, to have fun and earn some money along the way”.

For business ideas and tips for working mums visit: www.mumandworking.co.uk www.workingmums.co.uk www.mumsclub.co.uk

www.kentfamilymagazine.co.uk

Elizabeth’s tips for anyone considering working for a company as a party plan agent are: n Make sure you have the support of your partner. If you are going to be out to work in the evenings and asking them to look after the children they need to understand the benefits. Not only financially but also in building your confidence to return to work. n Ask about the team structures and values of the company. The best companies are those that provide support and encouragement without putting pressure on you to reach targets. And that give you extra support in those first few months. n Find out what is involved in hosting a party – everyone feels a little nervous getting up at a party for the first time so make sure what is expected of you is something that you feel comfortable doing. n Research how much time will be involved in each party – some companies need you to make two or three visits to a party host for initial meetings, the party and deliveries. So consider the cost and time involved to see if it is financially viable and practical. n If you’re not sure if a company is right for you, consider having a party yourself so you can see what the consultant is like and how they work. If you still feel it is something you would enjoy you can take it to the next stage.

Lakeland adventure

a GuIde to HolIdayInG In tHe laKe dIstrIct By MedWay-Based pHotoGrapHer and travel WrIter dave WIse. For the fi rst time this year we decided to take our holidays in england. or rather, the arrival of a new puppy decided for us. We couldn’t face putting her in kennels so it was goodbye cheap deal to Greece and hello…well, we weren’t sure. there seemed so many good places to go, where could we start? After a bit of research we picked the Lake District. Plenty of walks for the dog and attractions for the kids and a regional tourist board which was only too happy to help us find appropriate accommodation and activities that suited our budget. Perfect.

The Stopover

It’s a long drive, so we stopped over in Yorkshire both ways. En route we stayed in Skipton, a busy market town with a castle. Coming back, we stayed a few days in the charming village of Malham. The surrounding dales are a walker’s paradise and the hike to the top of Malham Cove is an hour's worth of the best walking in England, and all of it on a firm path suitable for children of any age. A longer hike from Malham to Gordale Scar via the Cove and back again is a beautiful and breathtaking day out. The Lister Arms pub and Beck Hall B&B are very dog friendly; Beck Hall hands out free walking maps and the pub serves brilliant, good value food by an open fire.

It’s easy to see why the Lakes are England’s number one tourist destination; we had a great time. So much to do, so many outstanding views and enough space that you’re never far from solitude if you want to escape the dull thud of the kids’ ipods. 44

Favourite walks tarn Hows, Hawkshead

What to do cruising lake Windermere We travelled by ferry all over the lake (cheaper than the bus, more fun than driving). The boats were built in the 1930s and although the decks get chilly they have warm, comfy restaurants inside. We docked at the Aquarium once where the kids could interact with the animals (they held a python, a highlight of their holiday!) www.windermere-lakecruises.co.uk www.lakesaquarium.co.uk

Goape If you fancy monkeying around high up in the forest then you’ll enjoy the GoApe at Grizedale Forest Park. Travel from tree to tree by swinging on or sliding down ropes while attached by harness to safety lines; it's incredible! Start as near to 9am as you can as the crowds do build up and you’ll be waiting around to get to the next section. www.goape.co.uk

the Beatrix potter centre, Windermere The countryside surrounding Windermere is Beatrix Potter territory and a short video about her life introduces you to the centre. Then you follow a path through miniature villages populated with Peter Rabbit and other characters. A cute attraction, perfect for kids and older Potter fans. www.hopskip-jump.com

The walking/cycle path around Tarn Hows Lake is peaceful and easy, with plenty of places for picnics. The views were the best we had in the Lake District.

lever lake, coniston The lake is magical, the circuit around it easy if a bit swampy (about a 4-hour round trip from Coniston).

orrest Head, Windermere After a half hour moderately steep hike you’re rewarded with a 360-degree view of Lake Windermere and surrounding villages. A perfect place for a picnic.

Brogdale Farm Where: Brogdale Road, Faversham, Kent ME13 8XZ. Tel: 01795 536250 www.brogdalecollections.co.uk

What’s there: Brogdale’s 150 acres of orchards are home to the National Fruit Collection including more than 2,200 varieties of apples, 550 types of pear, 350 of plum, 320 of cherry and smaller collections of bush fruits, nuts and grapes. Festivals are held throughout the year, with demonstrations, stalls and tastings, and at weekends, the Faversham mini railway runs through the orchard. The courtyard area has a café and shops selling locally sourced products.

We say: Brogdale has more varieties of fruit than you could have imagined possible. If you are a gardener, an hour-long orchard tour (£7.00 adults, £3.50 under 16s) will keep you enthralled, but that’s a treat probably best enjoyed when the kids are at school. There’s plenty for children: rare breed pigs (fed on surplus fruit) wallow behind the market place and chickens range freely. The shops have a great range of local foods and crafts, food in the café is delicious and you can pick up something for your garden at the plant centre. Best bits for the kids: ace café and tasting cherries straight from the tree! Prices: Parking for the courtyard and café is free. There is a charge for guided tours of the orchard or you can take a self-guided walk (£5 adults, £2.50 under 16s, £12.50 families). There is a charge for special events/festivals. 46
