In addition, some programmes offer distance and blended learning. Taught programmes are available at all Kent’s locations, including Tonbridge which offers short taster courses in a variety of subjects.

Many of our taught degrees include accreditation from relevant professional bodies.

students who take an active role in academic life. You are encouraged to participate in conferences and publish papers. If you are looking for an expert in a particular field, you can search our programmes or use the Find a Supervisor tool.

THE GRADUATE SCHOOL The Graduate School supports the strategic development of postgraduate education and research at Kent. It provides the foundation for a vibrant intellectual community, supporting postgraduates across all our campuses and European centres. Working in partnership with academic schools and centres we support and develop the following: • distinctive, exciting and innovative programmes of study that combine academic excellence with an exceptional student experience • funding and study opportunities through external links with research councils and institutes as well as other national and international organisations • postgraduate facilities and resources • a supportive environment for the intellectual interests of our students • student-led initiatives, such as social events, conferences and workshops • our excellent Researcher Development Programme and unique Global Skills Award Programme for taught Master’s students.

Researcher Development Programme Designed for research students, this programme helps you to develop specialist and transferable skills and is in line with requirements laid down by the Research Councils UK. Through a series of workshops, you gain transferable (generic) skills in areas such as leadership, negotiation, time management and communication. Students who can combine highly developed generic skills with their subject-specific expertise, are in high demand from employers looking for candidates who can operate effectively at a senior level. Training addresses knowledge and intellectual abilities; personal effectiveness; research governance and organisation; and engagement, influence and impact. You are offered a wide range of workshops within each area and all new PhD researchers complete a skills review to self-evaluate their competencies in order to plan their personal development needs during their period of research and beyond.

Global Skills Award Programme This programme is for taught Master’s students and is designed to broaden your understanding of global issues and current affairs as well as develop personal skills to enhance your employability. All students registered for a taught Master’s degree are eligible to apply for a place, which is free of charge. At the start of the programme you will take part in a personal assessment, which helps you to reflect on your past experience and future development. A lecture series allows you to participate in discussions on issues of global importance, such as the economy, the environment, the media, world politics and developments in science. In addition, via a series of skills training workshops you acquire skills such as teamworking, networking and leadership, which will help you to succeed in your career. The programme also gives you the opportunity to meet and network with other students from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.

RESEARCH EXCELLENCE

Kent’s performance in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) confirms our position as a leading UK research university. All of our academic schools engage in research of international standing. With programmes of study that are informed by research, our Master’s students are able to develop skills and knowledge sought by employers and relevant to contemporary issues. Our research activities and collaborations with outside organisations create knowledge that is highly influential and makes a significant impact on societal and scientific issues. In addition, Kent has been awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education twice in the last 12 years. The prizes are awarded for exceptional

contributions by institutions in the higher and further education sectors.

Our standing is an indicator of the world-leading research activity that takes place across the institution and is underpinned by our ability to attract external funding, which now consistently exceeds £13 million per annum. This also reflects our sustained investment in staff, buildings, laboratories and equipment.

Research standing Kent is placed firmly among the UK’s most research-intensive universities. Following the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014), Kent was ranked in the top 20 for research output and research intensity in the Times Higher Education, outperforming 11 of the 24 Russell Group universities. Of the research submitted to the REF, 97% was judged to be of international quality.

“My experience at Kent has increased my employment prospects immensely. Kent has provided me with the opportunity to gain a PhD and teaching experience; two aspects that will greatly elevate my chances of employment within, or outside of, academia.”

“My supervisory team are excellent! They’re really one of the best things about my PhD. They’re always on hand to help if I have any issues and give expert advice from their years of experience in the academic field. We have a very relaxed and collaborative working relationship, so I always feel I can approach my supervisors if I ever have any issues.” Ben Davies PhD Management

Research achievements Kent has an outstanding record of research success. Recent research achievements, which have impacted on the economy, government policy and the daily lives of those affected, include: • research demonstrating that chimpanzees are learning to adapt their foraging behaviour to avoid human contact • an asthma study showing that interventions by community pharmacists can help asthma patients achieve better asthma control, which could have major cost benefits • a miniature radio device developed to protect rare plant species from poachers

• new research from psychologists suggesting that people who are using Facebook or surfing the web suffer impaired perception of time • work into the delivery of the next generation of high-speed mobile networks; achieving speeds of up to 5Gbps in a 5G environment • research developed at Kent helping throat cancer patients speak again after having their larynx removed • analysis of farming subsidies showing that the UK Government must ensure a replacement to the Common Agricultural Policy is created or 250,000 rural economy jobs could be at risk • a study to show that injured athletes can benefit from using mindfulness as part of the sport rehabilitation process to improve their pain tolerance and awareness

• research which shows that workers in female-dominated workplaces have worse access to flexible working arrangements than those in gender-neutral and even male-dominated workplaces • work on both Homo naledi suggesting that a second species of human was alive at same time as Homo sapiens; and on new fossils in Morocco that add 100,000 years to human evolutionary history • economic analysis that found the polarisation of the labour market in Western economies that led to the decline of manufacturing jobs started in the 1950s, far earlier than originally thought.

A GLOBAL OUTLOOK Kent has an excellent international reputation and our academic schools are engaged in collaborative research with universities from around the world. Many of Kent’s programmes have a strong international focus with some offering the opportunity to study for dual or joint awards with prestigious overseas partner institutions. Kent has exchange links with over 190 universities around the world, providing students with the opportunity for research and study abroad. Our global outlook is strengthened by our longstanding links with continental Europe. Outward facing and international, we celebrate intellectual and cultural diversity, educating our students to be the global citizens of tomorrow. As an established researchintensive university, Kent acts as a gateway to Europe for students from the UK and across the world. Last year, over half of our postgraduate students came from countries outside the UK. This contributes to the cosmopolitan atmosphere at Kent and provides the ideal environment for analysis of global issues.

Where the world meets Europe Our partnerships within Europe provide the foundation for our international approach to research and teaching. We have specialist postgraduate centres such as our Brussels School of International Studies and our Paris School of Arts and Culture. We have over 150 European partners, including the highest ranking institutions in several countries. Our collaborations can boast links with, among others, the Université Paris-Sorbonne, Paris, Philipps-Universität Marburg, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität, Heidelberg, Universiteit Gent, Uppsala University, and the Universities of Amsterdam, Bologna, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Vienna.
