Creating Community Impact

Annual Report 2019/2020

Reflection & Gratitude Dickens couldn’t have foreseen 2020 when penning, It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, though it certainly depicts the past year. But blanketing it as the worst year ever would also mask the sheer beauty of community spirit and generosity that has unfolded since the pandemic began. As we were planning for the 20th Anniversary of our Golf Classic, launching our Hospice Expansion Campaign, and community events like Pride, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and long-term care emerged as ground zero. While our frontline colleagues rallied to care for Kensington’s population of vulnerable and frail seniors, the Foundation pivoted in response. Despite myriad challenges, our community stood with us, supporting collective wellbeing in everyday acts of inspiration and unity. And we allocated over $3.6M in support of Kensington’s urgent, capital and operational needs! Separate but together, neighbours banged pots in a symphony of support, restaurants and grocers delivered food, volunteers made masks, and families serenaded loved ones who looked down from balconies above. As the path ahead unfolds with continuing uncertainty, we are heartened that though distanced, we have never been more together – all the more reason to pause and reflect on the impact created for community care. Community, Philanthropy & Care The word community means common unity, people with shared purpose living together. Often taken for granted, the concept has emerged as central to our physical and emotional wellbeing as a social determinant of health. Well before the pandemic, we articulated this as a Kensington Health core brand value: giving new meaning to community care. Now, the essential role we play in the healthcare system, by alleviating pressure on hospitals and keeping them free for emergency needs, is in sharp focus. Philanthropy works the same way, funding as much as 40% of unmet capital and operational costs, in some areas. In fact, this year alone over $3.6M in grants and donations directly supported Kensington Health. While the Foundation’s contributions have always been central to improving community wellbeing, the need is now that much more acute. Talking about giving and the core value of community care may seem new, but they’ve long been a part of what makes Kensington special - our common unity. In these heightened times, increased awareness and understanding of what we do and how we fund it is essential to keeping our most vulnerable safe and the community well.

A Celebration of Giving FDC Foundation donation in action at Kensington Eye Institute

We closed 2019 by celebrating the holidays and raising over $78K. The season saw the benefit of two matching gifts totaling $50K: one for fresh food and another for end-of-life care, thanks to the generosity of a long-standing donor and a former Hospice resident. In February, we were overwhelmed when FDC Foundation made the single largest gift to Kensington Eye Institute of $384K for cuttingedge ophthalmological equipment, improving direct patient care. True visionary leaders, Carlo Fidani and Theresa Ferracuti have supported Kensington for years, from Hospice to Second Mile Club, as board members and volunteers, reaffirming their deep dedication to the Kensington community. Early March saw the promise of spring’s renewal when Edwin Lam and Family supported operational needs by naming the Spa at Kensington Hospice, in recognition of Mona Lam.

First Response Our heroic frontline staff

Then the world radically changed in nearly unpredictable ways. While most sheltered at home, healthcare ramped up to a level of unprecedented urgency. We cancelled the 20th Anniversary of our Golf Classic and launched the 2020 Response Fund in real-time to support frontline care. When longtime donor Beth Malcolm approached us with a remarkable gift of $50K, and an additional $50K pending a community match in 10 days, the challenge was on. Working entirely offsite without our usual infrastructure, we initiated the most successful mass giving campaign in Kensington’s history. And the community responded in every possible way. The Volunteer Committee donated coffee and muffins, Carmen’s Independent City Market donated weekly lunches, along with Feed the Frontline TO, #GirlStrong and many others who offered us PPE, self-care products and even orchids! From corporate partners to every single board member and member of our executive team, Gardens families to neighbours – many gave and gave again. The support culminated in an allocation of $320K for Kensington’s most urgent needs.

Community Resiliency Separated by distance, bound by the cause The Kensington Hike went virtual in 2020. Participants biked, paddled, baked and canned tomatoes in a choose-your-ownchallenge, raising over $125K for hospice care! We ended with a meaningful virtual commemoration and celebration of our 10th anniversary. By partnering with our community, donors, staff, volunteers, neighbours, the Kensington BIA, corporate sponsors, board and committee members, we raised more than ever before. Regularly changing levels of public restriction necessitates ongoing agility in planning engagement opportunities that will meet financial pressures. By speaking to Kensington’s values of community care, we advance a shared understanding of both the significant need for support and the deep impact philanthropy makes on our campus every single day.

Creating Space for Moments that Matter

We built Kensington Hospice in 2011 without any government funding to give those with terminal illness a better choice for end-of-life care. Today, it fills an essential healthcare gap and eases the burden on the system by keeping hospitals free for urgent-care needs. But with only 10 beds, the number of people we can serve is limited. The Kensington Hospice Expansion will see nine new residential suites, increased clinical and therapeutic care facilities and an extension of our end-of-life care programming in the community. Your support can strengthen community care. Learn more about how you can create meaningful community impact.
