AS A EURECA! RESEARCH ASSISTANT, I WAS A PART OF A LARGER GROUP OF ENGINEERS AND ARCHITECTS THAT WERE RESEARCHING AND DEVELOPING BIO-SIPS, A SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE TO SIPS COMMONLY USED IN CONSTRUCTION. MY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDED: RESEARCHING AND GROWING MYCELIUM BLOCKS, DEVELOPING PROTOTYPE BIO-SIPS, REVISING AND EDITING 3D MODELING FILES, AND DOCUMENTING THE TEAM’S PROGRESS.

CURRENTLY, I AM WORKING AS A STUDENT ASSISTANT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO DENVER’S COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING’S FABRICATION LAB. AS A STUDENT ASSISTANT, MY MAIN ROLE IS TO ASSIST AND GUIDE STUDENT USAGE OF LAB EQUIPMENT IN THE BOTH THE LAB’S WOODSHOP AND ANNEX, WHERE METALWORKING TAKES PLACE. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE OF MACHINERY, CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE OF BUILDING, AND BUILDING FURNITURE OR OTHER LAB EQUIPMENT.

THE WELL-BEING INSTITUTE SEEKS TO CONNECT THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO HEALTH RELATED SERVICES AND AMENITIES AT A TIME WHEN HEALTH AND WELL-BEING ARE BEING INCREASINGLY DEPRIVED OF ATTENTION AND RESOURCES. THE BUILDING’S OUTER EDGE BORDERS 14TH STREET AND LARIMER STREET, DIRECTING THE FLOW OF TRAFFIC TO FOLLOW ALONG THE BUILDING’S FACADE, CREATING INTRIGUE ABOUT WHAT LIES INSIDE. EACH FLOOR IS DEDICATED TO HELP ACHIEVE SOMETHING SPECIFIC: THE FIRST FLOOR EDUCATES PEOPLE ON HEALTH AND WELL-BEING, THE SECOND FLOOR CONDUCTS RESEARCH AND TESTING IN A CLINIC OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, AND THE THIRD FLOOR PROVIDES HOUSING FOR RESEARCHERS AND WORKERS IN THE INSTITUTE. ON THE OUTSIDE, A VOID IS CREATED IN THE CENTER OF THE BUILDING TO ALLOW FOR FOOT TRAFFIC TO BE RE-DIRECTED TOWARDS THE SITE’S INNER PERIMETER, WHOSE TERRACED LANDSCAPE HELPS CREATE A VISUAL CONNECTION TO THE SITE’S ADJACENT SCENIC PARCEL. THE INTENT IS TO CREATE AND FOSTER A CALMING AND RELAXING OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT, THEREBY SERVING AS AN EXTENSION OF THE BUILDING’S PROGRAM.

THE POPLAR FOREST WELCOME CENTER TAKES INSPIRATION FROM SEVERAL OF THOMAS JEFFERSON’S ARCHITECTURAL WORKS, INCLUDING POPLAR FOREST ITSELF, WHICH ALL IN TURN TAKE INSPIRATION FROM NEOCLASSICAL AND PALLADIAN ARCHITECTURE. THE DESIGN OF THE WELCOME CENTER IS A SIMPLE BUT SYMMETRICAL AND HARMONIOUS DESIGN. LIKE MUCH OF JEFFERSON’S WORK., THE DETAILS ARE WHAT ALLOW THIS OTHERWISE SIMPLE DESIGN TO REALLY STAND OUT AND BECOME SOMETHING UNIQUE AND BEAUTIFUL. THE LANDSCAPE SURROUNDING THE WELCOME CENTER SERVE AS AN EXTENSION OF THE BUILDING AND ITS’ CONCEPT , FOLLOWING A SIMPLISTIC BUT SYMMETRICAL AND HARMONIOUS LAYOUT THAT INVOKES A SENSE OF SERENITY AND TRANQUILITY.

THE CHATFIELD BOTANICAL NATURE CENTER IS LOCATED IN THE SOUTHWEST END OF THE GRAVEL PONDS. IT IS ALONG A NEARBY EXISTING PATH IN A QUIET AND SERENE AREA SURROUNDED BY DIVERSE PLANT LIFE. THE NATURE CENTER TAKES INSPIRATION FROM THE PLANT LIFE IN THE PARK AND IS ITSELF AN ABSTRACTION OF PLANT GROWTH AND BIOLOGY. THE CHATFIELD BOTANICAL NATURE CENTER CAN BE SPLIT INTO SIX MAIN MASSES: A CENTRAL MASS THAT TAPERS AND OPENS UP TOWARDS ITS EAST END AND FOUR MASSES THAT BRANCH OFF FROM IT TO FACE THE NORTH AND SOUTH. THE LARGEST AND CENTRAL MASS LARGELY HOLDS THE NATURE CENTER’S EXHIBITION SPACES, WHICH INCLUDE AN AUDITORIUM, AN UPPER AND LOWER GALLERY AND OBSERVATION DECK ACCESSIBLE THROUGH LARGE RAMPS. THREE MORE MASSES PERPENDICULAR TO THE LARGE CENTRAL MASS HOLD THE NATURE CENTER’S WELCOME AND ADMINISTRATIVE SPACES, INCLUDING OFFICES, BATHROOMS, A RECEPTION AREA AND STORAGE. THE RECEPTION AREA IS PERPENDICULAR TO THE LARGE CENTRAL MASS AND HAS PART OF IT BRANCH OUT TO THE NORTH, WHILE THE ADMINISTRATIVE AREA BRANCHES AND CURVES OUT TO THE SOUTH. THESE CURVED MASSES IMITATE AND FOLLOW TOPOGRAPHICAL CONTOURS. THE REMAINING TWO MASSES ALSO CURVE AND FOLLOW THE SLOPE OF ITS SITE, ALSO MIRRORING EACH OTHER AND THE MASSES THEY ARE PARALLEL TO. THESE TWO MASSES HOLD THE EDUCATIONAL SPACES OF THE NATURE CENTER AND CONSIST OF TWO LARGE CLASSROOMS. THE NATURE CENTER’S FACADE IS LARGELY COPPER, WITH FLEXIBLE PROPERTIES THAT HELP IT ACHIEVE THE NATURE CENTERS CURVY NATURE AND A COLOR THAT TAKES INSPIRATION FROM THE GRASSES AND PLANT LIFE THAT SURROUND IT. A BRANCH CURTAIN WALL SYSTEM ON THE EAST END HELPS PROVIDE A WARM ATMOSPHERE TO THE SPACES AND ALLOWS FOR VISITORS TO FEEL COMFORTABLE WHILE VIEWING THE EXHIBITIONS. THE PITCHED ROOFS IN THE CLASSROOMS AND ON THE EAST END OF THE NATURE CENTER HELP FRAME VIEWS TO DIFFERENT PARTS OF CHATFIELD THAT CONTAIN DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANTS IN DIFFERENT SETTINGS.
