SUSAN WITHROW RESIDENCE

Project Type: Residential

Location: Los Angeles, California

Program: Autocad

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Susan and her husband are looking to move out of their home because they feel that it is too big for them since their kids have grown up and moved out. After an extensive interview with the client, the design process consisted of prototypical diagrams, a bubble diagram, an adjacency matrix, and a block diagram. Once the programming phase was completed, space planning was utilized to successfully design the clients new home with the given floor plan.

SPATIAL ORGANIZATION

Linear organization with a central axis helps to form symmetry within the spatial relationships and creates spaces that are uniform in size to each other.

DESIGN CONCEPT

A modern and relaxing space surrounded by nature and incorporating sustainable design.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The café serves as an inviting place for CSUN students, staff, and faculty to grab a drink or snack, to meet with other students, or take a break from classes. Giving cafe visitors the feeling of leaving the hectic campus to “wake up” while still being close to the classrooms is why the cafe will be built on Orange Grove. Here, it would be surrounded by orange trees and greenery. The design will incorporate neutral colors, sustainable materials, and large windows to create an inviting and comforting space. Likewise, the modern interior architecture will also feature a mezzanine level that will provide additional seating area.

CONCEPT SKETCH

The design approach of Wake-Up Cafe is to design a modern building with a perimeter of only 24 feet by 24 feet. The front entrance features many windows to allow natural light to come into the space and let customers look outside. Since the building is in Northridge, a large canopy has been designed as part of the roof to block sunlight so guests do not feel hot when outside.
