The design team at Kennard & Kennard understand that quilters mostly look for backing designs which are non-linear and not uniform so that once the quilt has been quilted, the backing does not appear crooked.

Using a quilt backing fabric with the width of 275-280cm (108'') eliminates the need to join fabric and the backing can be put either along or across the back of the quilt.

Extra-wide backings are a more cost-effective way to back larger projects.

From the very beginning our inspiration has always been our customers. There is nothing more satisfying than bringing you the pleasure of quality fabrics to help you create your beautiful project.

The quilt backing fabric needs to be just as carefully considered as choosing the colours for your quilt top. It should be a complementary fabric and colour to your top.

Even with a batting in between the top and back, a mismatched or strong backing colour can shadow through to the front. For best results, choose a colourful backing with a pattern.

Squaring up the backing is something you can do yourself or you can have it done professionally. It is essential to ensure the back is large enough. To square up your backing fabric, first determine that you have enough fabric for it to be 6-8 inches larger than the top on all sides, allowing for fabric loss during the quilting process.

Machine wash and dry your backing fabric as soon as it is purchased so it’s ready to use when you need it!

There are a wide variety of battings on the market for you to choose from. Consider using a dark batting if your quilt top and back are dark colours, and if your quilt has a lot of white in it, you should use a bleached batting to enhance the crispness of your white quilt. The batting needs to be 3 inches larger on all sides than the quilt top.
