Kenmare is blessed to have many musicians, highly skilled, learners young and old, professionals and amateurs, and some wonderful teachers of music. One such is Bogumila Sokirko (Bogusch) who recently organised a concert in St. Patricks, Kenmare, for and by her students, from the age of 7 to 70+.

There is great work going on at Atlantic Lodge, a real collaboration project to make a small area for the babies and toddlers to enjoy safe outdoor play. This idea is the brainchild of Maura Landers who works with the parents and children.

For this project she is working with the parents and Vlaad the Manager from Atlantic Lodge, Guido from Men’s Shed, many volunteers in the community, businesses in Kenmare and Tidy Towns.

It was a delight, beginning with a Chopin Polonaise played on the piano, and ending with Bogusch herself playing Chopin’s 'L’Adieu', a lovely farewell. With many different performers and pieces within these two, not only for the piano but also some different instruments such as the Bassoon, French Horn, Oboe, Violine, Viola and Cello, a 'Knock Knock' piano piece for participation by the audience, a jazzy interlude reflecting on Bille Holiday, and even a Beatles’ song 'Imagine'. It was a very special evening and thanks are due to all participants especially to Bogusch herself.

Kerry Hospice Foundation provides funding for; extra nursing care, including night and twilight nursing in people’s homes, refurbishing hospice rooms in community hospitals, palliative care beds and care in designated nursing homes, funding for palliative care equipment, aids and appliances to enable people to live more comfortably at home, extra support for patients and their families and the on-going education of nurse specialists and members of the multidisciplinary team in Specialist Palliative Care.

'Run 4 Rachel' was a group of 23 of Rachel Topham’s family and friends who participated in the Quest Adventure Race in Kenmare on March 2nd to raise much-needed funds for the Kerry Palliative Care Team. The group included Rachel's wife, Rhona, her sister Helen, Rachel's cousins, uncle and friends, many of whom travelled from England and Scotland to participate.

The Kerry Hospice Foundation (KHF) is a voluntary organisation which helps provide funding and support for palliative care services in Kerry. All money raised in the county is spent locally. It costs €10,000 per week to cover specialised nursing, equipment and complimentary therapies needed to run the Tralee unit along with palliative care services in the wider Kerry community and in community hospitals in Kerry.

The Topham family would like to sincerely thank every single person who donated and helped raise the incredible amount of €24,000 through the Go Fund Me Page, Sponsorship Cards and all other donations. This is a very worthy charity and brings great comfort to patients and their families.

Annabel Langrish, West Cork artist and ceramicist, has moved 2 doors up Henry St, to a fabulous new premises. Here there is space to display all her work, from her popular Irish Wildlife, birds and animal .prints, to the Wild Atlantic Way windows series, to her vibrant new works from her imagination, printed on canvas.

Annabel uses a variety of media. Her traditional work is in oil on handmade paper. Now she paints in acrylics and oils. She also makes colourful decorative raku fired ceramics for the wall, including seahorses, fish, hares, birds and boats, often incorporating driftwood.

A range of products have been developed using Annabel’s designs. There are sets of tablemats and coasters, mugs, aprons, t towels, bags, lamps and cushions.

The new gallery upstairs showcases as well as Annabel’s own originals, an eclectic mix of excellent Cork based contemporary artists, not to be missed.

Tom Lovett, born in Goulane went to New York in the late 1950’s / early 1960’s where he met Noramay Downing of Kenmare. The couple later married and had one son, Tom and two daughters Joanne and Pat. Tom, Joanne and Pat and their families recently returned to Kenmare to see the house where their father was born and meet their cousin Raymond Downing, his mother, Mary and his son Jack.

Kathleen Sweeney Bowler celebrated her 50th birthday in The Mews Restaurant and afterwards in the Wander Inn. A fantastic night was enjoyed by all who shared her special birthday.

Irish Communities for Biodiversity Report and photography by Heike O’Sullivan The Irish are known the world over for their generous nature. There are almost 10,000 registered charities and a further 20,000+ organisations in Ireland's wider non-profit sector. Although some say that Ireland has actually too many charities for a small country such as this, duplicating each other’s work and reducing their effectiveness, there is no doubting Irish people’s generosity when it comes to donating their time and money. Accordingly, we placed 5th out of 146 countries on the CAF World Giving Index 2018 as well as in their 5 year ranking.

Many of us give locally or to street collections, but whom do, for instance, Ireland’s 23 new 2018 National Lotteries millionaires talk to if they intend to donate large sums to a particular cause without broadcasting their identities to all and sundry?

Probably to the Community Foundation for Ireland. Part of a global network of over 1,800 community foundations, it was established in 2000 and has already given out around €7.5 million to communities in Ireland and abroad. One of Ireland’s leading philanthropic organisations, it connects individual donors, corporate clients, trusts and foundations with dedicated non-profit organisations and voluntary groups that can make the best use of their gift. Where donors have specific interests, the Community Foundation directs their funds towards specific sectors such as the elderly, sports, youth groups, homeless facilities, health, minorities, the environment and many more.

Currently, the Community Foundation for Ireland have established a fund of €200,000 and are inviting community groups to apply for grant funding to engage an ecologist and develop a Community Biodiversity Plan (“CBP”) for their local area.

The closing date for applications is June 28th next. The grants scheme has been devised to enhance biodiversity in communities throughout the country by combining the expertise of qualified ecologists with the skills, experience and enthusiasm of local community groups.

It is expected that ecological studies will be carried out between February and November 2020, with final CBPs to be submitted by funded community groups to the Community Foundation for Ireland by March 2021.

Priority will be given to projects that focus heavily on engaging the wider community and demonstrate an intention and capacity to work closely with local landowners and with their chosen ecologist to produce a coherent, accessible and achievable Community Biodiversity Plan. There will be three levels of grants:€5,000 for community groups to work with an ecologist to classify their local habitats, assess their condition and extent, map them, and define a suite of actions to enhance biodiversity. €7,500 for community groups who collaborate with one or two land owners, or €10,000 for community groups who collaborate with three to five land owners, to classify habitats with a focus on field boundaries (hedgerows, tree lines, watercourses and stone walls), assess their condition and extent, map them and define a suite of actions to enhance biodiversity.

The area to be covered by a project may vary. For the €5,000 grants, the Community Foundation anticipate a scale of approximately one townland (rural) or two townlands (urban). For the larger grants, they anticipate a greater area of approximately one or two townlands (rural); or a 30+ha/farm. Grant levels will be awarded with consideration to the effort and commitments outlined in the proposal and the area the project seeks to cover and/or the number of farmers it engages, whichever is more relevant.

The ecologists hired specially for their participation in this scheme will ensure that communities learn as much about their local biodiversity as possible by helping them to understand the qualities of the habitats they have in their local area and how they interact, the unique challenges and opportunities that are specific to their area, and the level of complexity and effort needed to address them. Communities will be involved in data collection and species identification, and will be offered guided walks, workshops or other events as part of the project.

Transition Years graduation ceremony for Pobailscoil Inbhear Sceine finished with the National Anthem preform in Sign Language. Delighted to be invited to asked to explain to the students that it was Alan Newstead a deaf student who wrote to me about their being no version of the anthem for the 50,000 members of the deaf community lead to me giving him and the teachers of Bishopstown community school the task of coming up with the agreed version of the anthem which the TY students preformed on the night of their graduation.

Síona Cahill, the President of the Union of Students in Ireland has gone on to achieve great things since she interned in my office a few short years ago. She was lobbying me & fellow Senators & TD’s on the USI pre budget submission.

I met with met with Chief of Staff at the White House to the President of the United States and raised the issue the 50,000 undocumented Irish in the United States.

The President of the Union of Student in Ireland asked me to raise the J1 visa issue for students who wish to work in the United States & the ongoing attempts to pass the E3 visa bill. I presented the chief of staff with a copy of the report he and UNESCO Chairs and experts of preventing violent extremism Professors Dolan & Brennan published on ‘Northern Ireland returning to violence in the event of a Hard border due to brexit’. It is important in light of President trumps statements on supporting Britain crashing out of the EU with out a deal thus leading to a return to a hard border.

Rockmount Daycare Centre open day with new person in charge, Sneem woman Mary Hussey, along with Councillor Marie Moloney & Councillor Dan McCarthy. Rockmount provides respite day care for older people and also clients with with Alzheimer’s and other dementia related illnesses. Rockmount is only in existence due to the hard work & fundraiser of many, many people who sustained efforts led to the building of this fantastic facility.

Writer in Residence Kerry Co Council Annemarie Ní Churreáin the Writer in Residence with Kerry Co Council was in Blackwater on Sat 15th of June.

It was Annemarie’s 3rd visit Blackwater. She was very inspirational as usual and had everyone writing creative pieces in less than an hour. In September Annemarie will be moving Maynooth University as 2019-20 Writer in Residence.

Kenmare’s top restaurant, No 35, took the triple crown when they scooped the best emerging Irish Cusine for Ireland, Kerry and Munster at the Irish restaurant awards.

The restaurant which is family run by Dermot and Oonagh Brennan uses local produce and breed their own pedigree rare Saddleback pigs for their delicious free-range pork.

Dermot Brennan has won several awards for his free range pork, the most prestigious of which was the Champion of Ireland for Best Pork Sausage at the 2016 Fins Goustiers European Championships in France All their sausage meals are hand made and use an old recipe handed down from his Grandfather.

The pork also won gold at the European sausage championships in France, the por coppa award at the Irish Food Awards and overall best product at the recent Listowel food fair. Dermot Brennan trained in the art of charcuterie with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall at River Cottage in England and with small artisan producers in Tuscany, Italy. The application of salt and smoke to food can be traced back from ancient civilisations right up to the present day. This represents the beginning of cooking and remains a key part of No 35’s house cured charcuterie.

A large crowd turned up in the Blackwater Tavern in April for a charity performance by the Blackwater Singers with special guests ‘Finding Your Voice’ Killarney Ladies Singing Group, and Soprano and Musical Director Mary Culloty O’Sullivan. The charity chosen by the Blackwater Singers was Crumlin Children’s Hospital as one of the Blackwater Singers, Tess O’Connell's granddaughter Amy had lifesaving heart surgery there. The Killarney Singers chose to raise funds to get a secure home for Noah Switzer Buckley a Tralee boy who has Autism and is a flight risk.

Mary Culloty O’Sullivan spoke about Noah and the 24/7 care he needs to keep him safe, whilst Donal O'Connell spoke about his daughter Amy's open heart surgery in Crumlin Children's Hospital. Her condition will require further surgeries as she grows. There were wonderful raffle prizes and €2,000 was raised, with each charity receiving €1,000.

Many thanks were paid to all who supported the event so generously and to members of Blackwater Women's Group who sold tickets and served refreshments. New members are invited to join the Singing Group in October with another performance planned for December. pic Mary O’Leary

Thank you: re-election to Kerry County Council: I am delighted to be re-elected to Kerry County Council with an increase in my vote, taking the 4th seat. Thanks so much to all those who gave me their No. 1 votes and also those who gave me a preference vote. It was very beneficial and encouraging to receive such strong transfers from candidates from my own party, other parties and independents throughout South & Mid Kerry.

My family, friends and campaign team were fantastic, I couldn’t have done it without them. Although the Scarteen’s receive a strong personal vote I also want to thank my party Fine Gael for their support throughout the Municipal District. It was a very competitive election especially with so many candidates coming out of the Kenmare area, a place where from the foundation of the state until 1999 only had one Councillor and usually only two candidates at election time. I wish the unsuccessful candidates all the best for the future in whatever path they choose.

I pledge to continue to work hard on behalf of the all the people of the Kenmare Municipal District and will always give an honest, professional and effective Political Service. I will also continue to utilize my contacts with Fine Gael Colleagues and Ministers for the betterment of our area. The same as before I will continue to work with Councillors Johnny Healy-Rae and Dan McCarthy for the betterment of the greater Kenmare area.

Formation of Council 2019-2024: Fine Gael and Fianna Fail together have a majority to take control of the Council, however extra support was secured when an agreement was reached with the two Labour Councillors and Independent Councillors Sam Locke and Councillor Dan McCarthy.

The N71 Ring of Kerry road between Torc Waterfall and the carpark for Dinis Cottage will be closed to all traffic until Friday 5th July 2019. The purpose of the closure is to facilitate emergency repairs to a section of the retaining wall & road at Dinis. The contractors engaged will also be carrying out night-time work to minimise the duration of the road closure.

A diversion will be in place via the N22 (Cork Road) & Kilgarvan (R569) and advisory signage will be erected. Access will be maintained from Killarney to Muckross House, Torc Waterfall & the ‘Cardiac Steps’ walkway. Access to Ladies’ View & Moll’s Gap will be maintained from the Kenmare/Sneem side.

Businesses affected by the closure will be kept fully briefed on the works. Regular updates will be provided through local media, social media and the council’s website.

Though it sometimes seems like one, this is not an obituary column, but I was told the other day of the death of David Simmons RIP. David was a man well known to our local farming community through his importation of second hand tractors and other farm implements. His father Sidney RIP was a certificate holder in Ardtully Fishery and the owner of a beautiful silver coloured Alvis car.

Lieutenant colonel MJ Harrington RIP told me that he once arrived at the fishery to find Sidney in a state of high excitement. ‘Michael,' he said, 'I caught a handsome salmon about an hour ago and I must show him to you.' Opening the trunk of the Alvis there was no salmon to be seen. "I am positive I put it in,' Sidney said, ‘Or did I put it somewhere else?' A search of the river bank ensued but no avail with no trace of that fish ever. Poor Sidney was heartbroken. Michael told me that he heard on the grapevine that Sidney was spotted catching the fish and putting it in the trunk of the car which in his excitement in neglected to lock. The spotter waited his opportunity and when Sidney went down fishing again this man took the salmon.

A few years ago up in Donegal after a heated meeting on rights of way to the Gweebarra River a few of us were having a drink and a natter with some of the locals. One of them, we will call him Pat, said, ‘A stranger bought a few acres of land below my place which had an old right of way on it. The main road did a big loop but by using the path you could save yourself a mile. My children always used it as I did myself as a shortcut to school. The stranger took offence to us walking through his land and had me prosecuted for trespass. On the day of the court the judge called me to the stand to defend myself and I explained to him what we did and how our family and others had used it for generations. I even told him I knew the exact width which was 5 1/2 feet. The judge queried this asking me how I could be so exact but I replied my grandfather used to bring turf up it with a donkey and two wicker work panniers and that is the exact width of the donkey and the baskets your honour. The Judge looked at me and asked 'what is your view of the landowner?' Without a pause I said he is a nice man, a grand fellow, and I have no complaints against him whatsoever Your Honour. You are a fine person too said the Judge, case dismissed!

Which meant we kept using the old path.'

This thought, continued Pat, was not the end of the affair.

'A few months later the stranger got a heart attack and the ambulance arrived but he was in a bad way upstairs and they needed help to get him down so they rang me. My first question was would I be welcome in the house to which the answer was yes. I arrived pretty quickly and we were bringing him down the awkward narrow stairs when he slipped from my grasp and fell down several steps. Anyway we got him into the ambulance and he was shuttled to hospital where he spent some time but made a good recovery. A short time after he came home I got a letter in the post from him thanking me for my help in his hour of need which was lovely, but at the bottom it said if anything like this ever happens to me again I would be very grateful if you do not come to my assistance!'

This is the latest information from Inland Fisheries Ireland; Prawn fishing for salmon. No prawns allowed all season on Laune River. Open rivers no prawn fishing allowed in the month of September. Catch and release you can fish them but only with barbless hooks.

Kerry Blackwater prawn fishing is at the managers discretion only.

Bass fishing up to 3/10/19 one fish in a 24-hour period, 40 cm to folk of tail. Catch and release from 1/11/19 to 31/12/19.

MICHAEL HEALY-RAE TD Community Involvement Scheme now opened Kerry County Council is seeking applications for the Community Involvement Scheme. The scheme, which will run from 2020 to 2021, encourages a joint approach with locals and landowners for the restoration of mainly local and cul-de-sac roads. It would involve a contribution from the local community of between 15 and 30%. Applications will be accepted until July 5th.

Kenmare New Post Office I want to wish John F. O’Sullivan, Postmaster Kenmare Post Office, and his staff every good wish in their new premises which is located in the Daybreak supermarket on Main Street, Kenmare.

The new Kenmare Post Office is a state of the art facility which will continue the great service that has been given by the O’Sullivan family to An Post and the community for many decades. I would strongly urge people to remember with regards to local post offices, if you don’t use them you will lose them, so it is of vital importance that people understand the great range of services that are available through their local post office and please avail of them at every opportunity.

ROAD WORKS ON THE N22 & R569 I was glad that my representations have been successful in ensuring that works are going to be carried out at the Junction between the N22 and the R569. The works are scheduled to begin in August / September. Many accidents are continuously occurring here at this location and I am hoping that these works will improve the safety here for all people using the road.

SELF EMPLOYED I am very glad that after a very long campaign self-employed workers will be entitled to weekly job seekers payments if they become unemployed from November 2019. The new social insurance benefit scheme which is coming into operation will provide some small comfort to people who are courageous enough to start their own business.

Going back to 2011 my first speech in the Dail was with regard to self-employed people and the fact that there was no support for them when something would go wrong in their business. Up to €203 will be provided for 9 months for people with 260 or more self-employment PRSI contributions or 6 months for anyone who has less.

Welfare changes for self-employed workers is one of the most significant policy decisions that has been taken by this Government and is a matter that I continuously raised and now call this a step in the right direction.

Passports My office has been very busy in the past few weeks with calls about passports as people were heading off for some winter sun or a ski trip and discovered at the last minute that their passport was out of date.

This is also the time of year that people plan their summer holidays and book theflights, hotels and transports and forget to check their passport is in date. Remember there are certain countries that your passport must be in date for 6 months after the date of travel so ensure if you are travelling to these specific countries that you check your passport. If you find your passport is out of date and you are travelling within 10 days please contact me or my office before you apply for your renewal.

CPR 4 Schools is a programme for post primary schools that gives students the confidence to perform hands only CPR and the confidence to use an AED. Ms. Breda Slattery, PE Teacher, who is trained to teach this programme, recently trained 22 third year students as part of their SPHE class and now all are certified from the Irish Heart Foundation to perform hands only CPR and to use an AED.

On Wednesday May 8th, 10 students represented Pobalscoil at SciFest in IT Tralee with their Science Teacher Ms Sarah Abbott. Kasia Klorek, TY Class, with her Career Guidance teacher Ms Emer O’Riordan, receiving her Highly Commended award in the National Career Skills competition. The awards were presented in the Department of Education & Skills in Dublin.

Well done to the four Pobalscoil athletes who competed at the All Ireland Schools Track and Field Finals in Tullamore on Saturday June 1st. In the Inter Girls 2000m Walk, Aoife O’Reilly was ninth. In the Senior Girls 1500m Steeplechase, Rhona Randles was third. In the Senior Girls 1500m, Alyce O’Connor was third. In the Inter Boys 1500m Steeplechase, Michael O’Reilly was eleventh. Congratulations to our two very impressive All Ireland medal-winners Rhona and Alyce. This was a historic day for our school with four athletes competing on the day and two athletes winning All Ireland medals on the same day for Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine.

Well done to all the athletes who represented Pobalscoil this year at Kerry, South Munster, Munster and All Ireland Schools level for both Cross-country, Indoors and Track and Field. There were so many outstanding performances by students at all levels during the year. Many thanks to all concerned.

At Kenmare Special Needs AGM their fantastic Secretary Anne Sheehan stood down after 10 years of working tirelessly for children with special needs in the greater Kenmare area.

Kenmare Women's Group Not sure that I have anything of interest to say this month, but at least I can say hello. Our committee members are busy contacting future speakers, even though at the moment October seems so far away (that's when we start back at the Adult Education Centre).

The months, as usual, are flying, and holidays are very much on the agenda at the moment. Either planning, traveling or having visitors. Whatever, I hope these summer months will prove to be a happy time for you.

Hopefully we will have lots of summer weather too!

As usual, at this time of year, our group have their coffee mornings at Brook Lane. Every Wednesday morning, 11am - 1pm. All are welcome so join us if you feel like a bit of company and chat.

Kenmare And District Garden Club

The meeting was held in the Gateway, Kenmare. Stephen Butler, who was head gardener in the Dublin zoo for 37 years, showed us the huge progress that he has made in creating naturalistic planting for both animals and visitors to the zoo. What he has achieved over the past 20 years is such an improvement on the restricted unimaginative spaces in which animals spent their confined lives.

His success in creating interesting walks for visitors (not forgetting a lot of them are only knee high!) with multiple planting, and at the same time creating themed planting in the different animal enclosures with both non edible and edible plants is a truly splendid achievement. There are islands and lakes, savannahs and woods, jungles and open plains.

There is the extra challenge of creating year round interest as the zoo is always open. The KDGC group, visiting Dublin in July, cannot wait to see it for themselves, particularly as they are going to be shown around by the man himself!

The club breaks for the summer until September 5th, when it will be entertained by Simon and Margaret at Willowfield Garden Centre at the usual time of 7.30pm.

New members are so welcome – we are a very diverse group who just love to chat about plants and gardens!

A huge thank you to all the volunteers,

participants and our wonderful committee members of the Ring of Beara Cycle. This year saw the event welcoming participants from all over the world and the feedback from those participants is overwhelmingly positive. One of the greatest assets the cycle has are the people, time and again we hear about how lovely all the volunteers were on the day, how people around town made them feel so welcome and how the cheering crowds coming down Henry Street made for an amazing finish.

The idea behind the Ring of Beara cycle was to bring people to the area and show them what an amazing place the Beara Peninsula is. The collaboration between the communities of the peninsula and with the help of Elite Events management the cycle has surpassed all the initial hopes for the event and it continues to deliver above and beyond every year.

Every year a survey is carried out and every year the part about the cycle that people love best is the people and the atmosphere. So to everyone who helped make that happen, whether you volunteered, participated, brought your child in to take part in the kids cycle, served in the shops, restaurants, bars with a smile, thank you! The cycle and it’s success are a credit to the town and the community of the Beara Peninsula.

Speaking of the amazing area in which we live. This month we thought we would high

light all the great activities that people can take part in. Kenmare is really spoilt for choice with kids camps, water sports, obstacle courses, cliff jumping, golf, horse riding, walking trails, cycle routes. Not to mention all the music nights, concerts and cinema offerings in the Carnegie, Supper clubs in the Sheen Falls, the 2 sisters Golf Tournament among many more. While there are too many to list, please check out the Kenmare.ie ‘What’s on’ and ‘See & Do’ section for ideas. There really is something for everyone.

The Inkwell Theatre and Drama group are making the Journey to the Carnegie Arts centre in Kenmare on Saturday June 29th to perform the All Ireland winning comedy ‘Cash On Delivery.’

This is a hilarious comedy by Michael Cooney featuring Eric Swan a landlord who has been defrauding the Social Welfare for many years claiming benefit of non existing lodgers. When it is all too much for him he decides to come clean only to start a rollercoaster of problems, mistaken identities and a hole that gets deeper by the minute. Set at a frantic pace the play uncovers more plots than were ever intended. Once described as a hybrid of Fawlty Towers and Father Ted and you will want to have your wits about you to keep up with the calamities.

The Inkwell Theatre were formed six years ago performing plays in front of packed houses, in March of 2019 they performed the All Ireland winning comedy ‘Cash on Delivery’ again to a 6 night sell out audience. Nursing Home Week celebrations were taken very seriously at the wonderful St Joseph’s Nursing Home, Kenmare with activities that included ‘Pimp my Zimmer!’

Kenmare Ladybirds and Kenmare Brownies, with Brown Owl Sally Boland, and Ladybird leaders Andra Noonan and Meg Bevan. at their joint enrolment on Tuesday 11th June in Gateway Church hall. The newest girls had their ceremony and were welcomed to the Irish Girl Guide family. Both groups earned lots of badges and completed their year challenges. and will return in September after a well earned rest.

Little Angels would like to thank everyone who took part in their National Pyjama Day 2019. Thanks to the generosity of the parents and children we raised €435 for numerous different childrens charities around Ireland. All the children from Little Angels preschool headed off on their school tour to Kennedy’s Pet Farm and had a day filled with excitement and fun. We would like to thank our bus driver Thomas Hartnett for getting us to and from Kennedy’s Pet Farm safely. A great day was had by all.

DAN McCARTHY INDEPENDENT Now the dust has settled, I am delighted to be re-elected to Kerry County Council for another five years. I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their kindness and hospitality while we were canvassing. I would like to congratulate the other Councillors that were re-elected and wish the candidates that were unsuccessful the very best for the future.

Cathaoirleach of the Kenmare municipal district. It is a great honour to be elected as the first Cathaoirleach of the Kenmare municipal area. To be the first Cathaoirleach is a privilege and something I will always proud of and cherish. I would like to thank the other Councillors for this support in electing me to this role. I will do my very best to carry out the duties of this office to best of my abilities.

Cahir School. There is now a Radar Speed Sign after being erected at Cahir School. Hopefully this will make it a safer place for the children, teachers and parents of Cahir school. I was very happy to put forward €5,000 of my councillor allocation as did Cllr. Patrick Connor Scarteen.

Farming. It is now a busy time in all farmers trying to secure harvest for the coming year. The weather is not helping but hopefully this will improve in the months to come. I would like to remind all farmers that from 1st of June all sheep must be electronically tagged. If you have not ordered tags already, there is a grant to all farmers for their first order in the year.

Kenmare Regatta. Congratulation to yet another great regatta organised by the Kenmare club. Well done to all who took part.

Gardening with Willowfield Gardening in June, The Willowfield Way !

Compared to last year the early summer weather has been rather unsettled. The early weeks of May suggested we were in for another hot spell like last summer but this was soon squashed or squelched as the rains returned and it has been hit and miss ever since. We are now approaching mid-summer with no spell of settled weather on the horizon. Just have to make the most of every day that comes along. But overall the garden is dry and shrubs and the summer plants are growing away fine even though the night temperatures have ben unseasonably low.

The most important task over the next few weeks is to finish getting your summer flowering plants planted up. Window boxes, hanging baskets, tubs, pots, barrels, boots, wheelbarrows… you name it, just plant it up!

This is an exciting time to add colour to your garden and to brighten up your patio areas or balconies for summer barbeques and eating outside in the evenings.There is a wide range of plant varieties to choose from with different colour flowers and different growth habits from trailing ivies and Petunias to miniature conifers and the traditional Geranium.

When planting up you can add slow release pellets to make fertilizing easier and ‘swell gel’ can make watering a bit easier. Some of the better composts have extra fertilizer mixed through the peat and will not need additional fertilizer for several weeks while the cheaper composts will contain less fertilizer and will need feeding earlier. As for the mixture of plants you choose it is entirely up to yourself ! you can choose a certain theme for your containers with shades of reds and pinks for example or go mad and make every container different. Whatever you want as you will be the one looking at it, so experiment a bit and enjoy the colour ! When you have the arrangements growing away , watch out for slug attacks and greenfly as well as checking your containers for watering each evening. It may not be necessary to water every evening but just get in to a habit of checking them and you can see if they are under attack from any bug or slug ! If you didn’t add any slow release fertilizer at the time of planting add some liquid feed when watering. Follow instructions regarding frequency of watering as each brand would be different.

Out further now into the garden the lawn has become an abundance of daisies and buttercups in the ‘’ natural ‘’ lawns. If you are in favour of a lawn of grass and no interruptions, spray with a lawn weedkiller that will only kill the weeds or spread a 3 in1, lawn fertilizer which also contains a moss and weedkiller.

This will selectively kill the weeds and moss at the same time as encouraging grass growth.

Apply just before a wet spell so the fertilizer can get washed into the ground.

As we approach mid-summer the range of shrubs that are coming in to flower is increasing. One of the best shrubs for this time of year is the Hydrangea. This has always been a traditional favourite for any garden. It thrives in wet conditions as well as being tolerant of dry spells. It comes in a wide range of flower colours in three distinct shapes. There is the more traditional ’Mop head’ varieties, then there is a more delicate and intricate flower head of the ’Lace Cap’ range. The third type are the cone shaped flower clusters of the taller, spiky, ’Panniculata’ types. All of these are great shrubs to have in your garden . This year there are several new varieties available as well as a range of flower colours in the ’Black Diamond’ range that has almost black coloured leaves which provides a fantastic back drop for their deep coloured flowers. On another note, the shrubs that have already flowered this year like Camelias, Spirea, Choisya, Forsythia..etc can be pruned back now so that they can start sprouting again with new growth and time to produce the buds for next spring’s flowers.

The trees are only just recovering from the April storm which burnt the leaves off the early leafing Silver Birch, Willow and Beech. These are all in the process of re-shooting but still look brown and burnt at the moment on their shoot tips. They will recover in time.

The residents of Atlantic Lodge held an international themed party to thank the people of Kenmare for all the support they have received since they arrived in Kenmare. Kenmare Welcome Group was set up last November to welcome the asylum seekers to Kenmare and to co-ordinate the provision of clothing, toiletries and other items along with extending the hand of friendship to the new residents of Atlantic Lodge.

Weekly coffee mornings take place on Thursdays; alternating between the Atlantic Lodge and the Family Resource Centre. On Friday Mornings members of the local walking club lead the weekly walks to

Many residents attend classes in the Adult Education Centre and receive support from the Family Resource Centre.

Kenmare Welcome Group received recognition for their wonderful work when they won a silver award at the Kerry Community Awards in May, and has been chosen to represent Kerry in the National Pride of Place Competition 2019. Blackwater Drama Group recently had a very successful six night run of their latest production 'A Place Of Our Own'.

This was the 9th original play from the Blackwater Group and once again proved to be very popular like previous productions. This year's play was a comedy, set in 1950s Blackwater, it centred around the building of Dirreendarragh Church and the struggles they encountered along the way.

The Blackwater community had to unite, leaving personal differences, political allegiances and other issues aside, in order to achieve their ultimate goal, to build their own church. The play also had at its core a darker story that touched the soul and out of which goodness came. The play had the audience both laughing and crying but they all enjoyed it and said it was one of the best yet. Many thanks to all who came to see the play, wonderful audiences who lifted to cast night after night.

Welcome to Summer at Kenmare Bowls Club.

We would be delighted to welcome new members, or if you would like to try bowls for the first time we would be very pleased to welcome you to our Buddy system which provides instruction for people new to bowls, and who would like to add to their social calendar. We are a friendly bunch who meet every Monday and Thursday morning at 10.30am to 1pm, and we throw in a cup of tea/coffee, a biscuit and a chat!

The club were the holders of the EBS Winners Trophy and runners up from 2018, and we were delighted to be able to field 3 teams for the competition this year, which was held in the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney in May. The Shield was won this year by Glenbeigh Bowls Club which was a fantastic achievement, and the runners up were Killarney 3 team. The Plate went to Killorglin B, and the runners up were Sneem We will be welcoming all the Kerry Bowls Clubs to our Open Fours Competition at the GAA Club on Thursday 20th June. This event was very well attended last year, and looks as though it will be equally well supported this year.

Our junior swimmers attended their last Munster Meet 1 of the year in Cork at the end of may, to knock off chunks of personal bests in their swim events and some great dives were seen by the swimmers even though they rarely get to practice off blocks! Well done to the team of Ciara Foley, Cillian Meagher, Saoirse Foley, Alex McCarthy, Conor Durkin and Amy Arthur, with a special mention to Amy Arthur who won a silver in 50 back and her first Meet 2 time!

Four of our swim club members represented Kerry in the Community Games All-Ireland finals in May. Only first place in Kerry finals go to the All-Ireland, so it is an amazing achievement that all four swimmers who went to UL for the finals made the podium! Jessica Merrigan Gold in the freestyle, Luke Merrigan Pewter in the breaststroke, Joshua Foley Silver in the backcrawl and Tommy Meagher Silver in the butterfly.

Next the performance swimmers headed up to UL Arena for the Munster Connacht long course Championships. This is a high level gala where swimmers can qualify for the National division 1 and division 2 galas. Well done to Tommy Arthur on great personal bests and Holly Arthur on securing her first national division 2 time!

Also Josh Foley, Ben Merrigan and Tommy Meagher achieved some division 1 times. Well done to Tommy Meagher on his silver in 100fly and Ben Merrigan on silver in the 1500 freestyle.

The weekend after that they headed up to Cork for the Michael Bowles division 2 qualifier gala. Some more amazing personal bests by everybody and over the two days 21 medals were collected! Well done to the girls, Ciara Harrington and Holly Arthur on securing more division 2 times and the boys had great success in the two relays they entered coming 3rd in both.

Also the club is proud to say it has three sub 30 second swimmers in the 50free, Tommy Meagher and Ben Merrigan join Joshua Foley who achieved it earlier in the year.

New club record now of 5 National division swimmers, with 30 events between them! Best of luck at both divisions to be held in UL Sports Arena and the National Aquatic Centre in July.

Golf News Kerry Shield. A nail biting finish to the 2019 Kerry shield!

15 of the Kerry Federation golf clubs once again descended on Kenmare for the second major Federation event to be held at Kenmare Golf Club this year. The title up for grabs was perhaps the most historic of trophies in Irish golf, the Kerry shield. The shield is the oldest original Irish golfing trophy, dating back to 1928 when if was first won by Killarney golf club. The competition held on the 8th of June saw Kenmare winning it for the 8th time in the clubs history.

Each team consisted of 6 players playing singles stable ford with the best 5 cards counting as the team score. The 6th card was kept in reserve to be used in case of a tie. Conditions were tough on the day with the south westerly breeze strengthening as the day went on. The first 4 teams out, Kenmare, Parknasilla, Ring of Kerry and Killarney all posted scores that remained at the top of the leaderboard for most of the day. As the wind strengthened, it was looking unlikely that those 4 top scores would be challenged but late in the day, 3 of the last 4 teams out, Castlegregory, Castleisland and Ceann Sibeal posted some brilliant individual and team scores to challenge for the title. Ceann Sibeal, the last team in, matched Kenmare’s score of 174 leading to a nail biting finish. In the end, the sixth card decided the day with Kenmare’s team of Paudie Kelleher (Kenmare’s Captain), Padraig O’Shea, Gavin O’Shea, John Sweeney, Philip Duggan and David O’Dwyer junior winning by 4 points.

Busy Summer at Inbhear Scéine Gaels Ladies Football Club A group of our U12 ladies were sent over to Fossa GAA for the U12 Community Games last month and came home with Gold medals! The girls came up against a strong Fossa in the semi final. This young team took on the challenge and with a 5-point win they went into the final against Glenbeigh/Glencar. After a long day the girls went in fighting and came out on top, with a point win. They will now go onto represent Kerry.

We also had a group from our U14 teams in the U14 community games competition recently. They came out with silver medals after a sad loss to Ballmacelligott in the final. This group of girls had great wins over Rathmore, Fossa and Beaufort. Well done girls and coaches.

The U14 division 2 team took on Fossa in Rathmore in the County League Final. The girls were unlucky on the day, but they will be back fighting! They started off the game with a goal and dominated in possession majority of the game, the score doesn’t reflect the hard work and dedication the group has put in since starting to train this year. They can only go upwards from here with their great coaches.

The U16 squad group have narrowly lost by 1 or 2 points every game they played, with the girls playing their hearts out. They travelled to Lispole to take on Chorca Dhuinbhe where a last-minute goal secured Chorca Dhuibhne a 2-point win, but on the upside the girls received a great surprise at their home game in Kilgarvan, where they received a new set of jerseys, kindly sponsored by Sean Healy of Lauragh Construction. The girls and the club are very grateful to Sean for sponsoring their new set of jerseys.

Our senior ladies were out twice in one week as the season ended. They were at home in Kilgarvan to a strong Scartaglen team where they pulled back to a 5-point loss after falling behind at half time. Sunday the 19th they were at home in Kenmare to Spa Ladies, where they faced their old team mate Gina Crowley. From the minute this game started it was a very closed game. Every girl on the field worked hard and the team worked well together. They had a sweet 1-point win over Spa and it was a well-deserved first win of the season for the hard-working group of ladies!

Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club hosted its inaugural Offshore Regatta on Saturday 15th of June. 15 Clubs from Cork, Kerry and Arklow travelled with 63 crews taking to the water in the 11 races. The day brought a mixture of weather conditions & the course had a number of turns which provided challenges to the rowers & optimised viewing for the spectators & club supporters on Kenmare Pier.

First race of the day was the Mens 2X which went to Bantry crew of Andrew Hurley & Charlie Lavin. Later Andrew followed up for the club with a well fought win from Alan Goodson of Arklow in the Mens 1X. Arklow travelled a long way with a huge contingent and Sionna Healy commanded the Womens 1X from the start with a very strong challenge from Miriam Sheehan from Castltownbere.

Kenmare was delighted with the performance of the J14 crews who were taking part in their first offshore regatta with 1st in the Boys J14 4X+ & 2nd to a strong crew from Castletownbere in J14 girls. The Kenmare Senior Novice crews did well too with the help of Waterville rowers.

Killorglin sent over strong crews and dominated some of the the Women’s races, with wins in in the Womens 2X, the Girls J16 4X+ and J18 4X+, culminating with victory in the Senior Womens 4X+ to take The Noel Casey Cup in an epic race with battles at the turns leaving Arklow and Kenmare in their wake.

The Mens Senior 4X+ which was the final race of the day was hugely exciting. Myross led from start to finish with a smooth and strong performance taking the Patrick Arthur Cup home but the other Clubs gave it their all out on the water in blustery conditions.

Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club would like to extend a sincere thanks to tall the Clubs who travelled and for all the help they gave both on and off the water, the volunteers and supporters who helped out on the day both on and off the water, and in the weeks leading up to the event and also to other local clubs and KMEG who lent us tents and equipment and to all the local businesses who generously supported our food tent. Many thanks also to Rev Cavanagh, Fr John Kerin and Fr Tom Crean who blessed the boats. It was a great day at Kenmare Pier & we look forward to next year.

We are currently inviting applications for the following roles Accommodation Assistants The role is responsible for ensuring that our public areas and guest rooms at the Sheen Falls Lodge are cleaned and maintained to the highest standard so as to enhance our guests stay. We require people with a good eye for detail and who are capable of working on their own initiative. These can be full-time or part time all year position, which includes weekend work and evening shifts to facilitate evening turndown.

Night time cleaner (For the purpose of public area cleaning during night time hours, 5 over 7 nights per week) *This role carries a night premium payment.

Experienced, Qualified Beauty Therapist in both face & Body Person with 1 to 2 years’ experience required to provide beauty treatments in a friendly, professional and efficient manner using Elemis and VOYA Products. All applicants must be qualified to CIDESCO, CIBTAC or ITEC standard or equivalent in BOTH face and body.

All roles are rostered to include weekends and bank-holidays.
