As a member of the Masterplanning studio, I was exposed to a large range of projects and worked directly with developers to create proposals for mixed-use destinations to meet the optimal yields for the given site. From creating vision books to RFP packages, I learned the essentials behind masterplanning and phasing large scale projects. In addition to early design work, I also worked on projects through schematic design, design development, LEED ND documentation, and construction drawings and administration.

As an extern at Ballinger, an architecture and engineering firm which specializes in healthcare, academic, and corporate projects, I assisted on several New York hospital renovation projects. My contributions included organizing floor plans and axons, modeling, as well as 3D printing exam and operating room equipment and furniture to aid medical staff in communicating their needs to Ballinger.

Through UVA’s externship program, I shadowed professionals at Page & Turnbull, an architecture firm which specializes in historic preservation. I attended OAC meetings, went on site visits, researched projects and performed AutoCAD, Photoshop, & Indesign tasks.

Assigned to San Jose Unified School District projects, my responsibilities included on-site visits, attending OAC meetings, construction progress photo documentation, preparing & recording bidding documents, reviewing specifications, submittals, closeouts, RFIs, & punch-list items, coordinating classroom relocation, & updating As-Built construction plans. Through my experience in the construction industry I interacted with clients, subcontractors, architects, inspectors, superintendents, project managers, coordinators, & engineers.

Academic Experience July - Oct. 2017

UVA, School of Architecture - Research Assistant As a research assistant for Assistant Professor Luis Pancorbo, I was assigned the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Assembly Building by industrial architect, Albert Kahn. Pancorbo—who received his Ph.D with a thesis on Kahn’s architecture—provided me with blueprints and photos of construction of the 1937 project. I then produced digital versions of the plans, sections, and elevations as well as a 3D model and axonometric drawings which were displayed in an exhibit on Albert Kahn’s work, Architecture as a Technical Object.

RISING AGAINST CANCER The project is an addition to The Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, located in the UVA Medical System, which is frequented daily by patients, caregivers, family members, nurses, and doctors. Despite the heavy traffic flow, the existing cancer center has extremely poor circulation.

ECCCC CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA

The proposal focuses on creating new pathways for people to move throughout the center through the use of a ramp across the entire front facade. In between the walkways are narrow volumes for occupants to spend their time.

These new spaces each have a program designed to make a visit to the cancer center a more enjoyable and productive experience.

Such places include a cafe, lounge, library, art studio, shop, pharmacy, fitness room, and confrence spaces.

The different programs were determined through interviewing staff and caregivers in addition to programmatic anaylsis of the current ECCCC. Each floor was categorized as zones for staff, treatment, patients, services, maintenance, and circulation as well as varying levels of privacy.

This proposal is for the Masoro Learning and Sports Center, a project that focuses on expanding literacy and education opportunities through organized sports programs, specifically soccer leagues, for youth in Masoro, Rwanda. Following the natural densification of trees, the site strategy aims to reinforce a gradient from public to private through programming, added vegetation, as well as both woven and ground surface porosities.

After studying braiding as a weaving technique, grasshopper was used to write a script to create five strand braid patterns. This exploration led to matrices of forms and patterns determined by changing variables concerning density and shape. Following this study a spectator structure sytem was developed using the braided pattern as a way to provide semi-porous shading.

The structure is 300 ft wide and 450 ft long, making it the longest span between columns for its time. Kahn was able to achieve such massive spans by developing intricate truss systems.

COHABITATION OF VARIED TEMPORALITIES Focused on affordable housing in Manhattanville, this proposal intends to house various types of housing programs across scales of size and time. To accomodate a range of temporalities from a one night stay to a multi-year permanence, their will be two towers to include luxury hotel rooms, market rate as well as subsidized units, and extended stay units for visiting residents. Residential spaces will exist alongside more publicprograms such as retail, restaurant, and public studio space. The residential units are varied across several scales: physical size, term of residence, and cost. Similarly the art pieces housed on the grounds, and produced here, are varied among these same spectrums.

The for profit programs of the mixed-use system will act as a self sufficient economy to help fund the subsidized housing, public gallery and artist fellowships.

Working professional artists can produce, display work, and lead youth in making workshops. The promotion of art and culture within the site serves as an extension of the nearby Studio Museum of Harlem.
