FALL 2015 ARCH 2710 CAAD 3D GEOMETRICAL MODELING & VISUALIZATION

Using the Golden Gate Bridge as a case study, a 3D model was generated as a method to learning CAAD and rendering technologies and techniques.

COMPELLING COMMERCE Although Lynchburg borders the James River, there are limited views of the river within the downtown area. The existing structure for this project is one of the only pubic areas where the river can be seen from the rooftop, a parking garage located on the corner of 10th Street and Commerce Street.

As an underused area, the city could greatly benefit from a multipurpose building to attract people away from the core streets of 9th and Main Street.The proposal for this site includes the demolition of the upper half of the parking garage and vertical construction above the remaining structure.

Above the first two floors of remaining parking, the upper floors would be separated byprograms such as offices, retail, and dining is to create more spaces for views through a combination of the skin-like facade and the introduction of pedestrian ramps, mimicking the circulating feeling of a parking garage.

This spiraling effect not only directs the movement of people, but also connects the new levels with existing structure.

Housing Preston’s People & Art: A Center for students, residents, & artists

Attempting to address the instinctive desire for fresh air and space for outdoor activities, this project includes an extension of Washington Park, weaving throughout Preston. This ongoing pathway encourages walking in an area that is heavily car oriented.

It serves to transport people from program to program break up the harsh divide between residential and commercial areas.

Currently, Preston Ave is not safely walkable nor inviting.

Eliminating parking would prove beneficial for businesses as the location along the trail will attract more pedestrian customers.

Integrating the places of attraction and the places where people live will enhance Preston by creating a network that promotes a healthy lifestyle of exploring the neighborhood on foot in contrast to isolating vehicle-nessecary programs.

The public green space has the potential to foster a more welcoming sense of connection through the insertion of community farms, gardens, open eating areas, and a sculpture park can attract the public. Focusing on a hybrid housing building, this project proposes a multi-use center for art and artists.

The complex mixes private and public through classrooms, studios, commercial spaces, exhibition areas, apartments and outdoor areas.

Inspired by the Nexus World Housing by OMA, the apartments include bedrooms primarily on the lower level complimented by open upper level access to fresh air and natural lighting through private patio space.

The Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center, located in the UVA Medical System, is frequented daily by patients, caregivers, family members, nurses, and doctors.

Despite the heavy traffic flow, the existing cancer center has extremely poor circulation.

The proposal focuses creating new pathways for people to move throughout the center through the use of a ramp across the entire front facade. In between the walkways are narrow volumes for occupants to spend their time.

These new spaces each have a program designed to make a visit to the cancer center a more enjoyable and productive experience.

Such places include a cafe, lounge, library, art studio, shop, pharmacy, fitness room, and confrence spaces.

These different spaces were determined through interviewing staff and caregivers in addition to programmatic anaylsis of the current ECCCC. Each floor was categorized as zones for staff, treatment, patients, services, maintenance, and circulation as well as varying levels of privacy.

CONTOURED CAVERN

Inspired by contemporary artist, Cai Guo-Qiang, this project aims to recreate explosive works of art in a new form. Cai’s uses installations to depict spatial relationships by intensely choreographing them to react to the surrounding conditions.

One such installation is his 2004 exhibit Inopportune: Stage One and Two. This exhibit consisted of two tigers, especially as they were being hunted. The tigers spin through air while under the attack of arrows, a violent beauty.

Contoured Cavern was designed using grasshopper through an abstract study of Cai’s Inopportune installation. Analysis lead to a series of rules with which a new installation would be created.

First, a context must be defined. Next a trajectory is established in relation to the boundaries of the previously defined context.

The path is then divided to create a series of moments.

Then a new series of objects is arrayed around each moment, just like arrows in a tiger, or firework exploding from the center.

Following the creation of micro-moments within the installation, they must be combined in a way that expresses both individuality as well as continuity. Finally, the result is a form that is changing, yet uniform connected by some spatial relationship.

The objective of MODA, Museum of Distributed Artefacts, is to invite pedestrians into the museum without intimidating them with outrageous architecture, but rather small ribbon windows along the facade that work in a gradient to expose more of the installations inside while still keeping them somewhat unknown. The methodology of the MODA is expressed through the division of the “Back of House” programs such as administration and archives, and the public space to be enjoyed visitors to the museum, the auditorium, or the cafe.

In addition to dividing the programs vertically between Back of House and Museum, the public spaces located on the first floor may be accessed on days when the MoDA is closed, still generating revenue. The artefacts are purposely positions on higher levels to allow the museum to function efficiently with back of house needs below ground to maximize the gallery space and public programs above while respecting of the Metro station and adjacent buildings. The context of the project stems from the individual creation of installations, a similar set of rules dictate the form of the museum while the physical context of the site informs the design and experience of

the museum. The museum aims to take visitors on a journey through individual exhibits, which vary in scale to give different sensations of space as experienced through framed views.

MODA serves as a home to installations intended to entertain and intrigue visitors. The organization and volume of the artifacts will lead people along a maze-like path, winding across galleries, allowing visitors to enjoy the exhibits

from multiple views. The strategy of the museum follows a set of parameters established early on in the project. These rules include defining boundaries, creating a trajectory, and dividing into a series of moments that together make a complete collection. This is accomplished by using the site context of Du Pont Circle in Washington D.C. to design a multi-story path which behaves according to the placement of the distributed installations.

This proposal is for the Masoro Learning and Sports Center, a project that focuses on expanding literacy and education opportunities through organized sports programs, specifically soccer leagues, for youth in Masoro, Rwanda. Following the natural densification of trees, the site strategy aims to reinforce a gradient from public to private through programming, added vegetation, as well as both woven and ground surface porosities.

After studying braiding as a weaving technique, grasshopper was used to write a script to create five strand braid patterns.

This exploration led to matrices of forms and patterns determined by changing variables concerning density and shape.

Following this study a spectator structure sytem was developed using the braided pattern as a way to provide semi-porous shading.

Using a precedent to learn the basics of Revit, a CAAD 3D model of the project was built to produce plans, sections, elevations, axons, perspectives, and animations.

Habitat 67 by Moshe Safdie is a apartment complex located in Montreal, Canada. The project is composed of 354 identical 17 ft by 39 ft concrete units arranged in different configurations reaching 12 stories in height.

ARH 5500 - History of Building Technology examines the history of building technology in the American context through the various construction typologies found within the University of Virginia. Students were able to apply lessons learned from architectural history, structural anaylsis, and construction methods to recreate the Delorme Dome.

SECONDARY

The Delorme Dome project began when Doug Harnsberger reached out to School of Architecture lecturer Ben Hays with the goal of reconstructing Thomas Jefferson’s adoption of Philibert Delorme wooden dome that burned in 1895. To settle future fire concerns, the Rotunda was rebuilt using a tile valuting system patented

by Rafael Guastavino.

TERTIARY

In keeping with the courses’ theme, the class utilized contemporary machinery such as the CNC router to generate all of the laminate pieces rather than hand carving.Built at one third of the Rotunda’s scale, the wooden replica was displayed on Grounds during the summer of 2018 to celebrate the University’s Bicentenial.

Project: A School for Adolescent Girls & Resident Faculty. Adjacent to an Anglican Church & Hospital Complex and along a Main Street leading to the Central Market. This thesis was systematically developed at the scales of age appropriate rooms, and around three typologies of courtyards defined by shade and shadows framing a public municipal Football Field.

Problem: Across the world many people have been deprived of the opportunity to learn. Of those who have not been granted access to schools, a majority of them are female. Using research on the low enrollment rates of girls in developing countries’ schools, this project aims to idenitify the social and physical barriers that affect attendance. This thesis project attempts to promote girls’ education through the creation of a single-sex school. The intention of the project is to use architecture to provide facilities of safe spaces for learning and empowerment for girls as well as for community gathering and bonding.

Program: A campus made up of educational, recreational, and boarding facilities for an all-female student population. The user group will include lower and upper secondary students (Grades S1-S6), faculty, and community members. The goal of the project would be to provide not only eucaation, but aslo a safe place for young women to develop self-confidence and supportive relationships.

Site (Country): Uganda, Africa. Located in East Africa, the Republic of Uganda is a landlocked country services by many lakes and rivers, including Lake Albert to the west, Lake Kyoga in the center, and the source of the Nile River, Lake Victoria to the south.

Site (City): Lira, Uganda. The Ugandan government recognizes education as a basic human right; however, a lack of funding, teacher training, rural populations, as well as inadequate facilities stunt the progress of education in Uganda. A large majority of secondary schools in Uganda are located in the southern half of the country, which leaves the Northern region in serious need for more educational institutions.

Based on education and welfare indicators, the Northern region trails behind the rest of the country. By creating a school in the Northern region, it would ideally help reduce the pupil to teacher and pupil to classroom ratios and increase the literacy rate. Although it may be indirectly correlated, momre schools would ideally help keep more girls in school longer, which may help to reduce the fertility rates and rapid population growth.

Lira is a city in Northern Uganda and is the third largest city with a population of 120,000. The city offers a suitable location for a boarding school because it is easily accessible through air and rail transportation.

Lira offers a variety of opportunities for natural exploration as it is located directly above Lake Kwania and in between two of the country’s largest protected areas. On a city scale, Lira is also blessed with protected areas within the city limits. Near Lira’s airport is Lira Regional Referral Hospital as well as the Lira Main Market. The juxtaposition between exposure to these urban amnities and nationally protected natural landscapes provides a unique site to foster both independence and privacy for a boarding school.

According to GirlUp, a UN Foundation focused on promoting girls in hard to reach areas of the world, “Those attending school often face gender bias and discrimination in textbooks, the curriculum, and from the teachers themselves. In poorer or more rural families, it is more difficult for girls to attend school, as education is often considered only important for boys. Girls in Uganda are more likely to drop out of school, marry early, and experience poverty than their male counterparts.”

Education plays a vital role in the post-conflict transition in Northern Uganda as an Overseas Development Institute project states, “it helps develop people’s abilities to break free of circles of violence and suffering” “Furthermore, there is some evidence to suggest completion of secondary school is necessary to provide an individual with a proper chance to escape poverty, as employment and income levels for those who completed primary schools are similar to those who did not attend at all. Their region has particular difficulties as teachers are hard to find, the conflict created a lost generation without an adequate education themselves and the teachers from other areas are still highly concerned about security in the region.”

GLENN L. MARTIN 1937

As a research assistant for Assistant Professor Luis Pancorbo at UVA, I was assigned to recreate Job. n 1752, the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Assembly Building by industrial architect, Albert Kahn.

The structure is 300 ft wide and 450 ft long, making it the longest span between columns for its time. Kahn was able to achieve such massive spans by developing intricate truss systems.

Pancorbo—who received his Ph.D with a thesis on Kahn’s architecture — provided me with blueprints and photos of construction of the 1937 project.

I then produced digital versions of the plans, sections, and elevations as well as a 3D model and axonometric drawings which were displayed in an exhibit on Albert Kahn’s work, Architecture as a Techincal Object.
