fire station in South Africa A fire station that brings together a divided community, while serving those community members in more ways than one.

Design Premise: This project was a comprehensive studio project, which included a group portion for the schematic design of the project, and an individual portion for the design development.

My team members Blaire Beree, Carla Long, and I designed the schematic mechanical systems, structural systems, landscape, materiality, and lighting systems for a fire station located in Sowetto, South Africa, while developing the design further into our own image. To the left is the rendering of my own design.

If you break down the essential purpose of a fire station, its core purpose is to serve its community and provide safety for the people within it. To ensure the station is fulfilling its purpose between fire emergencies, you must identify the most important needs of the surrounding community. After careful research on the surrounding area, we found an emphasis on the oppression and violence against women.

What makes our design unique is the addition of a child care center, safe room, and information center within the program to ensure the station is a safe space for women to work, as well as become a place to escape violence and oppression they may be facing at home. Additionally, our goal was to increase job opportunities for women fire-fighters by providing them with a child care service while they are working long shifts throughout the day and night.

The floor plan and organization of space for this design required extensive research on the inter-workings of a performance theater. This includes an in depth understanding of how the back of house operations flow efficiently for performers, the safety and comfortabilitly of audience members, and the correct point of reference for theater seating. A simple calculation using the length and height of the treads of the seating, the focal point of the stage, and the distance above the head in front of each person was used to engineer the seating for the optimal performance experience.

The acoustic panels were designed to create the best experience within the theater aesthetically, as well as audibly.

A crawl space for the performance technicians was included above these acoustic panels, and a fly back space behind the stage is utilized for stage props. All entrances into the theater are ADA appropriate, and the skin system of the building provides solar efficiency throughout the seasons.

a diverse family residence designing a home for a family with differing interests that not only challenges the normal roles of a household, but celebrates these differences.

Design Concept: In this design my partner Kolton Watkins and I were tasked with designing a home for a family that serves a clientele that we created. The members of this family are quite different than your average nuclear family dynamic. We created diverse characters within the family that challenge the norm of both gender roles and interests. Each member of the family has their own personality and hobbies that would not commonly co-exist in normal life.

In the divided atmosphere of our world today, it is easier to separate ourselves from those people who have different beliefs, ideas, or opinions than our own. However, as designers it is extremely important to recognize this diversity and strive to design a space where all types of people can coexist peacefully- a space where everyone is accepted. By designing a space that fosters opportunity and acceptance, not division, it may be much more common to see different people co-exist peacefully in the future. The family dynamic that we created accepts and strives for these differences.

After developing the clientele, we used a folded and unfolded floor plan methodology to further study the relationships and space of this residency.

Folding and unfolding the floor plan into random orders gave us an in depth fresh perspective on the many diverse possibilities between the relationships of the space. The results of this project became a residency that is not only as diverse as our clientele but brought this diverse family closer together.

‘folded and unfolded’ floor plan diagrams By taking the relationships of the spaces and folding them randomly into new variations, inspiration for the form of the house could be infinite. This also created new relationships of the floor plan that gave us a new and diverse perspective each and every time.

Thinking inside and outside the box simultaneously. We studied the floor plan this way on and off of the site.

The rendering exemplifies the horizontal form shown in our diagrams, and the hallway that seemingly blurs the lines between inside and outside the home bringing them both together in the same space.

tiny houses for homeless teens A tiny house village designed for homeless teens in OKC

Design Concept: This project was for a design build studio where we were paired with a non-profit organization in central OKC called Pivot. This organization provides resources for teens who are in the process of finishing school and find themselves in difficult situations, or in the worst cases homeless. They came to us with a design proposal: tiny homes. By designing a series of tiny homes, they could provide single unit homes for teenagers, as opposed to the alternative group living. This would allow the teens a better sense of their own space and optimal focus to finish school or find jobs. The painted corrugated metal homes my teammate, Morgan Roberts, and I designed provided not only a cheap and easy to build solution, but also created diversity within the tiny home village. Our goal was to use easy to build and cheap materials so the organization could provide as many homes as possible, while also providing a fun and welcoming environment. Teens could also express themselves using the color, and color is proven to create positive affects in the chemistry of our brains. The highlight of our design is the corner window that folds slightly over the roof. This allows for a stream of light to fill the space. The typical ‘home’ front of the building that can be seen in any children’s drawing of a home gives strong symbolization to these teens who find themselves without a home.

color+ creativity A study of how color promotes creativity in a central Los Angeles design school

Design Concept: It is obvious that our surroundings affect our mood, behavior, and experiences. When designing a school for children, it should also be obvious to consider what it is that creates the best atmosphere for learning and creativity. The relationship between color and behavior has one of the most significant roles for promoting education. Another classic topic when considering education is the idea of nurture vs. nature, where nature represents the characteristics you are born with, and nurture represents those that are taught to you.

The reality is that we acquire our behaviors and characteristics both by nature and nurture. When expressing this in a design a grid can symbolize any characteristic that you may be born with. While a box can represent any behavior trait we may learn throughout life. By filling this grid with different boxes, we make up the basic structure that makes us who we are. This design school uses these principles to make up its overall organizing structure, while the specific colors and sizes are strategically placed by function. The way a person experiences a room can have a compelling affect on them and can even benefit brain function. In the world of design it is incredibly important to study the best possible way a space can be experienced for its specific purpose.

This design school is located in central Los Angeles and offers many young students who don’t find their niche in traditional school settings, but are gifted artistically and wish to further their education with a focus on design. The challenge of this design was the East facing wall is considered a Los Angeles historical landmark and is covered in graffiti from local artists. This wall needed to remain untouched. In order to offer lighting within the building, a grid skylight system was integrated into the design.

The colors within the design compliment and celebrate the graffiti found on the exterior wall.

an architects’ manifesto life keeps moving along with no warning. one day you appear here on this earth, and the next day you leave with your impact on this place being incredibly insignificant. but what if you do. what if instead of taking everything you possibly can from this world, you give yourself to it. what if you are a servant instead of self-serving, and continuously give everything you can and everything you have. what if you do. what if you do impact this environment and the lives of thousands and thousands to come. or even the life of one. what if you do create something that this place has never seen. and what if it’s good. what if it is so good it makes someone feel happy, loved, wanted, or needed. what if it is so good that people will travel thousands of miles to feel that. what if it is a home where families love and grow. or people from everywhere can come and be together as equals. what if it gave back. what if you were so thoughtful and selfless when you created this good thing that it gives more to this world than you ever could. what if you do. what if you create something so good and no one knows you’ve created this good thing they just know it exists for their benefit and it benefits them for the rest of their life and those lives after them. and when it is your time to leave you will know that you did.
