BEGINNINGS Vancouver is a wonderful vibrant city — diverse, inclusive, caring.

Sadly, however, it also has many needs that aren’t being met by private or public funding. Fortunately, there are many amazing organizations that stretch every dollar and every volunteer hour to support our community. But they need more support.

That’s why we came together to form 100 Gay Men for a Cause – YVR.

In 2018 a post appeared in my Facebook feed that led to the 100 Who Care Alliance, with more than 650 chapters and an incredible array of resources, and 100 Men Who Give a Damn – Ireland, founded and headed by a Canadian, which offered to help. Each provided enormous encouragement and support to what would become (and still is) the only gay chapter in the world.

The Vancouver Foundation worked closely with us to establish a unique partnership whereby funds are donated to the Foundation, which handles all verifications, administrative and overhead charges, and charitable tax receipts, and directs monies to our chosen charities.

But first, we needed an endowment. Ten men stepped up and donated sufficient funds to establish the 100 Gay Men for a Cause Fund. A Steering Committee was established and we planned our first meeting only one year ago in April, 2019. Our beginning was modest, with 25 men in my living room.

Through quarterly events, our members become more aware of the many needs and those charitable organizations working to address them. We know that everyone gives back in their own way – some of us have time, others offer skills and talents. Our members also give back financially.

Each event lasts only an hour, plus time to network and socialize before and after, as one wishes.

Join us, have a drink, meet interesting and like-minded men, and feel good about supporting those in need.

Donations are administered by the Vancouver Foundation. The minimum donation is $100 a quarter, which can be met through regular quarterly giving or regular monthly giving of only $35, by credit card. The Foundation graciously profiled our work. You can read more below.

FAQs: Frequently asked questions Q. How do I become a member?

A. Easy. Just complete Join Us page.

Q. How long do the meetings last?

A. Meetings will take no more than one hour. We open at 5:30 for drinks and socializing and start the meeting promptly at 6.00 pm.

The formal meeting lasts a maximum of one hour, followed by further opportunities to socialize and talk with representatives of the presenting charities.

Q. What if I cannot attend a meeting?

A. We hope that everyone might be able to attend but that is not always possible. You still contribute your $100 through the Vancouver Foundation and abide by the decision of the majority attending and voting.

Q. Can I pay by cheque?

A. You can pay by cheque or credit card. All donations are handled by the Vancouver Foundation, which offers tax receipts. Do not bring cheques to the meeting. Consider automatic payment by credit card, monthly or quarterly. We have a minimum of $35 per month.

Q. I live in another part of the country. Can I still join? How do I take part from a distance?

A. You can live anywhere and still be a member. You need only make your tax-deductible donation. Of course, attending meetings might be a challenge‌ but you will still feel great about making a difference.

Q. Can I just send the donation to the charity myself?

A. Of course, but we discourage it for two reasons. First, it does not count toward your membership. Second, the total of donations has a major direct impact, beyond what any one individual might contribute. We also track donations through the Vancouver Foundation to maintain our membership roster as only members in good standing can nominate, attend and vote.

Q. Is membership limited to 100 gay men?

A. No, that would not be fair to the charities, would it? If we can make a big impact with 100 men, why not invite a friend and make an even bigger impact? Allies are also welcome. Remember, we're doing this for the charities and our community, not just for us.

Q. Can I bring a friend to a quarterly meeting?

A. Yes. We are always seeking men who give a damn. For us, giving a damn means making a commitment. That means you can bring a prospective member to a quarterly meeting, but if they don’t join, they don’t vote.

Q. What do you do with my personal information?

A. We collect your name, email address and phone number only to keep in touch with you.

100 Gay Men For A Cause - YVR will not sell, give or otherwise share your personal information with any third party without your express consent, unless required to do so by law.

We may occasionally recognize our members via social and other media but only with their consent. However, as we have a photographer at each meeting, any member who wishes to remain anonymous, must let us know at the time of joining.

We will never rent out, sell or give away your personal information. Ever.

Q. How do I nominate a charity?

A. There are two ways: 1. When you join or renew, you may nominate up to three charities.

2. The charity nomination form is also available to members in good standing at each meeting.

Q. How are the three presenting charities chosen?

A. Each nominated charity is verified by the Vancouver Foundation to ensure at least one year in existence and appropriate charitable status. Three organizations are selected on a theme (arts, culture, education, health, social, etc.) well in advance of a quarterly meeting. The three organizations are invited to give a short five-minute presentation at the meeting. If a charity declines, or is unable to present, another charity is chosen from the database.

The identity of the three presenting charities is not revealed until the meeting is underway.

Q. Can a charity nominate itself?

A. No, charities are nominated by members. Our members are not just interested in nominating and donating: they want to learn about local causes.

They may want to volunteer, sponsor or serve on a board or committee. They may even become a regular donor or benefactor. Our members and supporters find out about each nominated charity through our social media discussions and posts as well as meetings.

Q. How much of my donation goes to the administration costs?

A. Absolutely zero! All donations are handled by the Vancouver Foundation.

100 Gay Men for a Cause is organized and operated entirely by volunteers. No fee is charged for meetings to cover costs of room rentals, bartender and supplies; our partners support operations. No member is reimbursed for time. Any and all direct expenses are approved by the Steering Committee. An annual financial overview is provided to members.

Join Us! By submitting your information, members agree to a few terms and conditions...

1. You agree to donate $100 to the charity selected by the majority of members present and voting, once per quarter.

(Donations are to the Vancouver Foundation, which issues the tax receipt and forwards the donation.)

2. You agree to have your information (name, email, phone only) stored.

(It will not be shared with any external parties - promise).

3. If you cannot make it to a quarterly meeting, you agree to donate regardless through the Vancouver Foundation.

4. A photographer attends events and photos are posted to social media.

Should you prefer to remain anonymous, you will let the organizers know.

5. You have already donated either $100 for the first event and/or set up a monthly donation (minimum $35) with the Vancouver Foundation.

Eligibility Criteria Only members of 100 Gay Men For a Cause - YVR are eligible to nominate a charity. There is no proxy voting. Charities cannot nominate themselves.

In order to be considered the charity must be: • A registered charitable organization • Established for at least 1 year (no start-ups).

Operations must focus on issues of particular concern to gay men and be located in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia.

• Organizations with a national or international focus may be nominated, provided the request is for a project to be delivered in the Lower Mainland.

• All funds must be spent in the Vancouver region.

• Members of 100 Gay Men For a Cause - YVR may nominate up to three charitable organizations for consideration upon joining and at any meeting.

• Three charities, previously verified by the Vancouver Foundation as a registered charity, will be selected by the Steering Committee at least one month prior to an event.

• Once notified of their selection, nominated charities are required to keep their participation confidential prior to the meeting.

• The organization selected at the meeting will be ineligible to receive subsequent funds from 100 Gay Men For a Cause - YVR for one year.

• The two charities not selected may be nominated again for possible selection.

• All three selected charities may provide brochures at the event and are encouraged to network with members after the selection.

• A request will be made of the recipient charity to present an update on their use of the donation at the next meeting of 100 Gay Men For a Cause YVR. • 100 Gay Men For a Cause - YVR reserves the right to amend these eligibility criteria when appropriate, without consultation with the nominated charities.
