QUESTION: My employment has been terminated and I have been told I have to sign a document called a Settlement Agreement and get my own legal advice.

Why is this necessary?

ANSWER: Paul Cowdery, Employment Lawyer at Clarke & Son replies:

When an employment relationship ends, an employee will often be asked to sign a Settlement Agreement. Principally this document records the terms of agreement between the employer and the employee and is generally intended to be in full and final settlement of any claims the employee may have relating to the termination of his or her employment.

As part of the process, the employee is required to take independent legal advice. Normally the employer pays the cost of doing this as this step is necessary so that the Settlement Agreement is enforceable.

We are able to provide this advice to employees which includes explaining their legal rights and the impact of the Settlement Agreement.

You should, in any event, seek legal advice on your position if your employment is being brought to an end by your employer or in circumstances where you feel compelled to give notice yourself.

This is intended to open at 7.30am Monday to Friday and provide a hearty breakfast for children coming in.

Craft Fayre

Noah‛s will be holding a craft fayre on the 7th November 2015; between 11am and 2pm. If you are interested in having a stall please contact Alison on the above number.

The children have settled back into the preschool routine after their half term break very well. Many children have come back with lots of interesting items and stories to talk about what they have been getting up to during their break.

As we approach December the children will be busy preparing for the nativity play, which is always a glamorous performance.

Its 4 am in the morning and I’m sitting up reading in bed Whereas I really should be sleeping resting my weary head I can hear the gentle pit a pat of rain on external sills I suppose I should go to the bathroom for a couple of sleeping pills On wobbly legs and out of bed I totter to the door Flicking on the hall light so’s I don’t end up on the floor I think of my dry throat and a cup of tea would be nice I’ll go and put the kettle on it’ll be boiling in a trice With tea bag in I put the mug upon the sink surround While waiting for the water to boil I have a look around There were an awful lot of Christmas cards so I hung them on the wall To complement the Christmas tree standing all elegant and tall I wonder how those cushions on the couch get so out of place I think I’ll straighten them up a bit because it looks a big disgrace Oh dear as I held them to the light they’re looking rather grubby ‘Er indoors know’s who to blame ‘don’t we darling hubby ?’ So I think I’ll take the covers off and put them in to rinse I hope I remember how to do it, it’s been a long time since Now where does she keep those things that she puts in with her wash I remember mum did her washing in a tin tub cos we wasn’t very posh It used to be in the garage hanging on the wall And I had to use a big old nail to make sure it didn’t fall It’s getting rather chilly and I’m feeling tired and old So it’s upstairs to put my dressing gown on to save me getting cold I remember now I was reading my book a silly thing to do at night So off with my robe and back into bed. Hard water is something we are all used to in Basingstoke, although most of us have got used to putting up with it, many do not realise that you can do something about it. It furs up our heating systems, causing breakdowns, makes it more expensive to heat our homes and damages our appliances.

The other problem with limescale is the constant cleaning of showerheads, shower screens, stainless steel sinks, the whole house can suffer where hard water is concerned. Limescale aggravates skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.

With a water softener no limescale will get into the house, which means you will have to do less cleaning, stop buying limescale related products, cut washing powder use by up to 75% and have less chance of large bills for potential future problems with your heating system and appliance breakdowns. If you were to purchase an ordinary softener you would have quite a large machine, which requires you to set clocks and lug around a 25kg bag of salt. The

7 The Consumer Rights Act 2015 About the Act - What is happening?

The Consumer Rights Act came into force on 1st October 2015. The law is now clearer and easier to understand, meaning that consumers can buy and businesses can sell to them with confidence. On the rare occasions when problems arise, disputes can now be sorted out more quickly and cheaply. Alternative Dispute Resolution, for example through an Ombudsman, offers a quicker and cheaper way of resolving disputes than going through the Courts. The changes are relevant to all consumers and every business which sells directly to them.

UK consumers spend £90 billion a month. Transparent rights will help them to make better choices when they buy and save them time and money.

What do I need to know?

The Consumer Rights Act came into force on 1 October 2015 which meant from that date new consumer rights became law covering: • what should happen when goods are faulty; • what should happen when digital content is faulty; • how services should match up to what has been agreed, and what should happen when they do not, or when they are not provided with reasonable care and skill; • unfair terms in a contract; • what happens when a business is acting in a way which isn’t competitive; • written notice for routine inspections by public enforcers, such as Trading Standards; and • greater flexibility for public enforcers, such as Trading Standards, to respond to breaches of consumer law, such as seeking redress for consumers who have suffered harm.

Most of these changes were important updates to existing laws. But two new areas of law were also introduced.

• For the first time rights on digital content have been set out in legislation.The Act gives consumers a clear right to the repair or replacement of faulty digital content, such as online film and games, music downloads and e-books.

The law here had been unclear and this change has brought us up to date with how digital products have evolved.

• There are now also new, clear rules for what should happen if a service is not provided with reasonable care and skill or as agreed. For example, the business that provided the service must bring it into line with what was agreed with the customer or, if this is not practical, must give some money back.

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 stands alongside Regulations to create a greatly simplified body of consumer law. Taken together, they set out the basic rules which govern how consumers buy and businesses sell to them in the UK. What should I do?

The new laws mean you should be able to learn much more easily what your rights entitle you to and what they don’t.

You should bear in mind your rights when you research purchases and when you decide between providers.You should be clear where to go for more information in advance of a purchase and what to do if a problem arises.

Stay Well This Winter We’re looking forward to another winter which will bring with it the usual aches, pains, colds, sniffles and sore throats many of us experience each year.

Taking care of ourselves and our families is top priority at any time of year, but even more so now. There are some simple steps to take which will keep you and your loved ones out of hospital and even out of the doctor’s surgery.

First of all, ask your local pharmacist as soon as you feel unwell, before it becomes too serious. They are a great source of information and health advice and will have a consultation room if you prefer to talk in private.

With Christmas and New Year holidays approaching, make sure you have your prescriptions and all medication before 24th December. Expecting visitors? Ask them to bring enough medicines – not forgetting they may stay longer than expected if the weather prevents safe travel.

It’s particularly important for young children and the elderly to stay warm and eat well, so stock up on food supplies, have plenty of hot drinks, wear warm clothes, and try to warm your home to at least 18°C. Check on your neighbours too, especially if they are frail and you haven’t seen them for a few days. If you are worried about an elderly neighbour call the Age UK helpline on 0800 00 99 66.

An increasing number of people are now eligible for a free flu vaccination, which is well worth it. People who qualify are: • Those aged 65 years and over • Those aged six months to under 65 in clinical risk groups • Pregnant women • All two-, three- and four-year-olds (but not five years or older) on 31 August 2015 • All children of school years 1 and 2 age • Those in long-stay residential care homes • Carers.

Big Blast at Probus Club

Bramley resident, church warden and member of the parochial church council, Geoff Twine, gave an illustrated talk to the Probus Club of Basingstoke, of which he has been a member for many years, about two years of his life spent in charge of the world’s biggest bomb disposal task. Flight Sergeant Twine, an armourer by trade, had been based at the Bicester RAF Explosives Ordnance Disposals unit when he was given the responsibility for the Llanberis slate quarry project.

Pre-war had seen these disused slate quarries in North Wales, as the main RAF Bomb Storage Unit. They had been converted into huge underground bomb stores and during the war there was considerable activity in despatching all types of ordnance to the airfields throughout the country. Post war the area had been used as a disposal area where Bomber Command despatched thousands of tons of obsolescent and deteriorating stocks of explosives to be made safe or destroyed. It was decided to maintain the area as a storage depot for the bombs probably on the basis that there was nowhere else more suitable.When the RAF moved out in 1956 they attempted to destroy the explosives. Fires burned for days and explosions rocked the area.

The area is a nightmare of crags and quarries linked by tunnels and high mounds of dumped slate fragments. There were quarries 900 feet deep and others with lakes 60 feet deep containing 20 million gallons of water. It was one vast booby trap to the unwary. 10 foot barbed wire fences eventually erected around the site failed to prevent trespassers resulting in some injuries. In view of the upcoming investiture of Prince Charles as the Prince of Wales at nearby Caernarvon castle and the deteriorating situation in Northern Ireland it was decided that something needed to be done.

Because of the nature of the site men had to be trained in mountaineering and abseiling as this was the main method of gaining access to the now seriously decaying devices down the sides of the quarries. As they crawled along narrow ledges, some of them hundreds of feet above the bottom of the pits, they used all their skills and iron nerves they possessed to turn any bombs or explosives they found into harmless objects.The passage of time and rock falls meant that bombs were found on ledges and crevices and many now lay exposed on the quarry floors. Divers searched the lakes and discovered considerable numbers of ordnance that although being underwater still had the capability to explode. The lakes were drained before work could be started and the pumps kept going as there was a natural inflow from streams of 170,000 gallons a day.

In a Daily Mirror article published on 5th September 1973 Geoff Twine is quoted “We know what we’re handling and what it is likely to do. On a job like this we’re writing the book as we go…there’s no precedent.” And testament to the high professionalism of Geoff and his small team there was not one fatality during the years it took to make the quarries safe at what had been described as the biggest time bomb in the world.

13 KEMPSHOTT NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICING Hello again everybody, Thankfully there have been no more reports of break-ins to vehicles in the last month in our area, but please continue to make sure you don’t leave ANY valuables in your vehicles overnight.

There continues to be sporadic reports of anti-social behaviour around Kempshott, two of particular concern.

Parents, do you know where your teenage children were in the evening on the dates below?

On Friday 9th October around 10.30pm a resident of Kempshott Lane was viciously assaulted by a male youth after he went to remonstrate with a group who had been causing a nuisance nearby. This group had a number of females amongst them who stood by and watched this happen. They know who they are, and no doubt their conscience will be telling them that they should do ‘the right thing’ and come forward and help Police with their enquiries. If they choose not to, well we will know then that they are as bad as the main offender, and when identified, can expect a knock on their door too.

A big ‘thank you’ to the people driving past who stopped to help and prevented something worse happening.

This kind of thing WILL NOT be tolerated in our community!

The second problem is another group of youths who were at Old Down at the back of Gabriel Park late on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th October who left small fires smouldering in the woods nearby, and litter everywhere.

I have spoken to groups of youths about this sort of thing previously, and told them that if they have a party of some sort, that’s fine, as long as they don’t leave BBQ’s alight and clear up the mess afterwards.

We will be patrolling this area every weekend from now on until things improve.

14 COUNCIL’S DOG WARDEN SERVICE TAKES THE LEAD

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s Dog Warden service has received a RSPCA Gold Community Animal Welfare Footprint Award for leading the way in handling stray dogs.

The accolade recognises the quality of the service provided by the council’s Dog Warden, Environmental Health team and the Community Safety Patrol Officers in the treatment and welfare of stray dogs, the out of hours service and the initiatives and partnership working done to promote responsible ownership.

Dog Warden Laura Yeates, who routinely deals with strays in public areas, picking up unaccompanied dogs in order to minimise the problems they cause and ensure their safety, also works with a number of re-homing charities to find places for unclaimed stray dogs. The environmental health team support the service by dealing with dog welfare issues, noise complaints relating to dog barking and dog fouling complaints.

Dog owners are expected to keep their pets under proper control, are legally required to ensure they wear a collar and ID, so they can be reunited if they escape. Any dog that is dealt with as a stray will incur a release fee, kennelling charge and possibly, an out of hours’ fee and dog owners are also being reminded that from April 2016 all dogs over eight weeks old must be microchipped and registered or they risk prosecution and a £500 fine.

Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services and the Environment Cllr Hayley Eachus said: “I am delighted that the council’s dog warden service has been recognised for the high standards of its animal welfare service.

“Dog owners can really help the team by ensuring that their pets are kept safe, are tagged and microchipped and by picking up after them. By getting your dog tagged and microchipped it means you can be reunited as quickly as possible if they go astray.”

Our President and a friend held the annual “overeat 9 different types of cake” morning in aid of the Macmillan Nurses which raised a total of £293. Thanks to everyone who supported.

Our Club itself received a most welcome donation of £555 from The Basingstoke Town Bowling Club President’s Charity 2015 in recognition of our community support work and the fact that everything we raise for charity is used for charity. Our heartfelt thanks to them. At our current cost of problem resolution it should enable us to answer around 8 calls for help.

Fundraising: The Hampshire Guitar Orchestra gave us an excellent evening’s entertainment. Their music is easy to listen to and covers a wide spectrum of musical genres – chamber, folk, jazz, swing, Spanish, rock n’ roll etc.. Between pieces Derek Hasted, their Director, interjects his own commentary on each piece which always raises a titter if not an outright guffaw. The whole performance made you feel light hearted and raised £750 - which also made us feel light hearted.

Welfare: We spent £305. Four very elderly people were helped with a mixture of garden and furnishing problems and a family with small children were prevented from being made homeless.

We also helped out with the annual Disport Day at Cranbourne School and took The Lions Den, to the Royal British Legion “Bikes” Day in aid of their Poppy Appeal.

Dog walkers are being warned that Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is clamping down on irresponsible dog owners who risk people’s health as well as letting their pets cause an unsightly nuisance on the borough streets and green spaces.

Acting on residents saying clean streets are important to them, the council’s community safety patrol officers will now issue on-the-spot fines of £50 to anyone seen not clearing up after their dog whilst they are patrolling the borough.

Refusal to pay the fine could land the owner in court and even more out of pocket.

Dog mess should be bagged and then disposed of in any general litter bin, many dog owners responsibly throw away a large proportion of this mess, but there are still owners out there who are prepared to leave their dog’s mess littered on borough streets, parks and around the countryside.

The team is also keen to promote good dog responsibility and will be patrolling the borough parks to remind dog owners that they are expected to keep their pets under proper control, are legally required to ensure they wear a collar and ID and from April 2016 all dogs over eight weeks old must be microchipped and registered or owners risk prosecution and a £500 fine.

As part of the crackdown residents that are experiencing a problem with dog fouling in their area are being asked to let the council know by calling 01256 844844 or emailing customer.service@basingstoke.gov.uk Since taking over the management of the community safety patrol officers, the council has established a programme of campaigns targeted at problem issues. This started with a crackdown on litter in Basingstoke town centre and then at the Leisure Park followed by a cigarette butt campaign and now action on other issues including dog fouling and littering in parks.

Cabinet Member for Communities, Service Improvement and Delivery Cllr Robert Tate said: “Dog fouling is the most offensive type of litter on our streets.

“Being a responsible dog owner means cleaning up after your pet. We need to get the message across that it is every dog owners’ responsibility to pick up after their pet and put the bagged mess in a bin.”

Baked by Fiona It’s been a really fun month for me, here are some of my latest designs…

This time it’s a recipe for totally indulgent cupcakes make with Ferrero Rocher chocolates. Not only are they used to decorate the cake, but there’s one inside each cupcake too.

Ferrero Rocher Cupcakes Ingredients (makes 12)

3 large eggs Approx. 200g caster sugar 25g cocoa powder 400g tub of chocolate buttercream

Approx. 1750g self-raising flour Approx. 200g margarine 24 Ferrero Rocher chocolates

Optional for decorating Gold decorating spray

Edible gold pearls

Method Preheat the oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C, 400°F, gas mark 6). Place 12 muffin cases into a 12 cup deep muffin tray.

Weigh your three eggs with the shells on. Measure out the same weight of caster sugar and margarine. Beat together in a bowl by hand or on a low setting on your electric mixer until well combined and pale in colour. Add one egg to the mix and beat in well, repeat with each egg. Weigh out the 25g of cocoa in a separate bowl then add self-raising flour until you reach the same weight as the eggs. Fold the flour and cocoa powder into the cake mix.

Place a tablespoonful of the cake mixture into each muffin case. Unwrap and place a Ferrero Rocher chocolate in each muffin case. Place another tablespoonful of cake mixture on top of the chocolate to cover it. Bake for 15 – 18 minutes.

When the cakes are done they should be well risen. To test they are cooked through insert a cocktail stick in the side of a cake and it should come out clean if it’s done. Remove from the oven, and transfer to a rack to cool completely.

To decorate pipe a swirl of chocolate buttercream into each cake and top with a Ferrero Rocher chocolate. For extra decoration you can add a few edible gold pearls or spray with edible gold paint.

Sham redundancies – are you a victim? By Karen Bristow, lawyer specialising in Employment

There are not many families that have avoided that dreaded word ‘redundancy’. It is hard enough for employees to come to terms with their employment being terminated when there is a genuine redundancy situation. It becomes impossible when their employer just uses the term redundancy as an excuse to dismiss when there are no genuine grounds for doing so.

An employer can only lawfully dismiss you for a potentially fair reason under English law. These reasons are: 1. Capability – where they believe you are unable to do your job properly, e.g. underperformance, inability to work with colleagues or because of persistent or long-term sick leave.

2. Misconduct – where you have been found guilty of gross misconduct or a series of acts of misconduct which you have been disciplined for.

3. Statutory restriction – where your ongoing employment would break the law, e.g. a lorry driver who has been disqualified from driving.

4. Redundancy – where the employer’s requirement for employees to carry out work of a particular kind has ceased or reduced.

5. Some other substantial reason (SOSR) - a ‘catch-all’ category which applies if there is a substantial reason to dismiss, e.g. refusing to accept reasonable changes following a business reorganisation.

Employers will often look to avoid dismissing employees where they have a potentially fair reason to dismiss, such as on capability, misconduct or SOSR grounds, due to the time-consuming procedures in place which they would be expected to follow.

Sometimes employers wish to dismiss for discriminatory reasons (e.g. because of the employee’s age, sex, race, disability, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion or belief etc), for automatically unfair reasons (e.g. because the employee has complained about issues relating to health and safety, working time, minimum wage, flexible working or perhaps because an employee has whistle-blown or joined a trade union) and so they seek to dismiss under the guise of a redundancy.

For a redundancy dismissal to be fair, there must be a genuine redundancy situation, the employee must have been fairly selected for redundancy and the employer must have followed a fair procedure. When determining the fairness of a redundancy dismissal Employment Tribunals are not normally entitled to investigate the reasons behind the redundancy situation.

There is no requirement for employers to demonstrate that they were forced into making redundancies because of economic reasons, a sound commercial reason which can be objectively justified will suffice. This does not mean to say that they will always take the employer’s reason at face value, especially where an employee establishes facts which suggest that their selection was discriminatory and the redundancy situation was a sham. It is important to know that there are very short time limits that apply to Employment Tribunal claims, e.g. three months (less one day) from the date of dismissal or the date of the discriminatory act, so if you think your dismissal for redundancy was a sham, don’t delay in seeking advice as you could be prevented from bringing a claim if your time limit has expired.

26 STEPHEN MORGAN STARTS AS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE AT BVA Basingstoke Voluntary Action (BVA), Basingstoke and Deane’s umbrella organisation for the voluntary and community sector, has a new Chief Executive, Stephen Morgan, who starts on 5 October. This follows the departure of Rebecca Kennelly, and a period when Alan Turvey, Chair of BVA was also Chief Executive.

Alan said:“I am delighted that Stephen has decided to join us. BVA plays a vital part in supporting the voluntary sector in the Basingstoke community and I am sure he will take us to the next level in terms of our effectiveness and contributions to the community.”

Stephen said: “I’ve been impressed by BVA and the essential work it undertakes to enable the voluntary sector in the borough to support vulnerable people, deliver important local services and improve the quality of life across all communities in Basingstoke and Deane. But neither BVA, nor the sector, can be complacent. Times are changing and like elsewhere in the country, difficult decisions are needed at a time of cut-backs and changes to public services. This presents challenges for the sector, but also new opportunities to work together to improve life chances for residents and the communities we serve.”

“My first priority is for the team to meet, talk or visit as many voluntary and community organisations in the borough in my first 100 days. We’ll listen to what groups are doing, find out more about how we can help them, and assist them going forward”.

Stephen leaves the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea where, as Head of Community Engagement, he established a programme for residents and councillors to work together to set up neighbourhood projects; introduced new funding to support innovation in the voluntary sector; and led the revision of an award-winning compact agreement to improve partnership working across sectors. He is a trustee of a charity and school governor in Hampshire.

Explorers

We have all been explorers this half term!

Year 2 have met a real Polar explorer. Al led a trek to the South Pole and told the children all about his adventures. He told them about the training he had to do, the food he had to eat and how his special protective clothing kept him warm. The children had lots of interesting questions to ask him and were fascinated to hear about his frostbite! The best bit was dressing up in all the layers of clothing he needed to stay alive.

Year 1 have been exploring closer to home! They have walked around Kempshott and looked at all the different kinds of homes in our area. The children did a traffic survey on Heather Way and also had some things to spot along the way. They spotted street signs, road markings and even saw a cat on a roof. The best bit was that the sun shone!

Year R are still very busy exploring their new classes and all the good things at school. The best bit is making new friends!

Some lucky Year 2 children explored the stage at The Anvil this month. They sang, along with children from other Basingstoke schools, at the Basingstoke Variety Show in aid of the Mayor‛s Charities. They had a great time and sang beautifully.

Sadly, Mrs Waters will be leaving Kempshott Infant School at Christmas and will be greatly missed. Mrs Waters has been our Headteacher for many years and is very much a part of the Kempshott community. From November there will be a book held in the school office if you would like to send her your good wishes.

Action Packed!

Year 3 pupils were helped by Warburton’s for the day to aid their quest in preparing a healthy and hearty sandwich for hungry pirates.

History came alive for Year 4 pupils when they all visited The Mayflower in Southampton to watch Horrible Histories Invasions. Abbie, a year 4 pupil, told us that it was a very enthusiastic and exciting show and would highly recommend it to all age groups.

Travelling through space became one past time for Year 5 pupils when a Space Dome visited for the day. This greatly enhanced knowledge and understanding within their science topic.

Year 6 pupils haven’t missed out on the fun so far this term either and have enjoyed taking part in cycling proficiency. With helmets to the ready they set off for the roads in a bid to become safe cyclists at level one or two.

Charity begins at Kempshott

Kempshott Junior School Harvest Festival took place on 9 October at St Marks Church, led by pupils and Reverend Taylor. An important aspect was giving thanks as well as providing for those within Kempshott who are less fortunate than us by donating food.

Our charity of the year is Naomi House and past councillors visited the site during its renovation and fed back information to the rest of the school. Pupils were amazed to hear from Sonny, a year 6 pupils, how homely and modern the place was! A sweet sale has kick started the fund raising well.

All pupils (and staff!) have boogied away at this terms disco raising money for the Kempshott Schools Association.

Glitter tattoos, sweets, chocolate, glow sticks and fun was had by all.

Badminton is Fun! ALDWORTH BADMINTON CLUB We are a friendly and sociable club, and we play every Thursday at Aldworth School from 7pm till 8.30pm. We are looking for new members. Shoppers warned to be vigilant after more distraction thefts at supermarket car parks Earlier in the year, I wrote about distraction thefts in supermarkets and their car parks. Sadly, we have had some more recent incidents, so please forgive me for bringing the subject up again.

In one of the recent events, an 80 year old pensioner was the victim of a distraction scam on Monday 14th September at the car park for Sainsbury’s in Drayman’s Way in Alton. As she returned to her car, she was approached by a man in his 60s who was described as Eastern European in appearance. This man distracted her by asking for directions on a map, and the man apparently had great difficulty understanding. Whilst he was doing this and the lady was doing her best to help, another person took her bank card from her purse in the car.

This is just one of a number of similar crimes, perhaps committed by the same people across the county.

Please remember never to write down your pin number and/or keep it with your bank card so that should the worst happen to you, hopefully you only suffer the inconvenience of having to get your card replaced.

Please also remember to protect your pin number when withdrawing money from cashpoints or ATMs, and keep an eye out for who is around you when you are making a withdrawal.

When you are in the supermarket, never leave your bag on the trolley unattended and always ensure your bag is zipped up. When putting your shopping away in the boot of your vehicle always ensure your handbag/wallet is with you.

If you are approached by anyone, keep your handbag with you or lock it in the vehicle before speaking to them or helping.

Likewise, if you are asked for directions or to look at maps, make sure you have safely stashed your personal items out of harm’s way first.

Sadly it is often elderly or less able people who are targeted by these criminals so please do keep an eye out for your fellow shoppers, and if you see anything untoward, report it to the store security team or staff immediately.

John Lambeth, the Chairman, welcomed 49 members and 1 visitor to the monthly meeting held on 7th October and remarked on the very enjoyable Mystery Tour the previous week which included a tour of Guildford Cathedral, lunch in Redhill and then a stop on the way home at Long Sutton to see the 12th Century church and enjoy tea provided by the WI. Tony Brazier, the Secretary, gave the welfare report on behalf of Christine Broadbent who was on holiday and went on to remind everyone of the forthcoming trip to the Geffrye Museum and Spitalfields on 12th November and the Christmas lunch at BCOT on 10th December.

The speaker was Dave Goldsmith from the Andean Medical Mission who gave a summary of the work the charity carries out in the Amazon region of Bolivia where blindness and low vision affects 3.8% of the population compared with about 0.7% in the UK. They returned again for this year to the villages of Magdalena and Baures where they saw previous patients doing well and attended to new ones. They also went back to Remanso, Bella Vista and Huacaraje and added in two new areas by expanding south and west from Itenez to the village of Santo Corazon and to the town of Santa Ana. During the 1 month trip they attended over 1350 patients and were operating until 1am some nights.

At the next meeting on Wednesday 4th November the speaker will be Gordon Massie on The Life and Legends of Mary Queen of Scots.

The group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at Brookvale Village Hall from 10 am – 12 noon and all retired Civil Servants and their partners are welcome. November 2015 in the wildlife garden The flowerbeds Hedges provide structure in the garden and help wildlife as they are in effect a long narrow wood giving wildlife a sheltered, fairly safe corridor through the garden. Broad leaved hedges can support the most insects but conifer hedges can provide good shelter. Evergreen and semi-evergreen hedges should be planted in early autumn but deciduous hedges should be planted in mid-autumn to late winter unless the soil is waterlogged or frozen.

Beech makes a popular hedging plant. If clipped it doesn’t shed its leaves, and provides a year-round dense screen, which provides a great habitat for garden birds.

Beech foliage is eaten by the caterpillars of a number of moths, including the barred hook-tip, clay triple-lines and olive crescent.The seeds are eaten by mice, voles,ngsquirrels nests. and birds.

Hedges are the ideal habitat for hedgehogs who would appreciate the layers of leaves beneath them in the autumn for building nests.

Saturday 21st November will be The Day of the Hedgehog with a series of talks taking place at Telford International Centre.

The pond A study by the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh has found that it is widespread over the whole of the UK for ponds to still sometimes contain tadpoles over winter; they should complete their metamorphosis in the spring, possibly becoming larger frogs.

If you come by any large logs now, build them into a pile in a shady spot near the pond alongside some grass that will be allowed to grow long, to create a good habitat for them when they emerge next year. The log ends could be painted to make the pile into a decorative feature.

From here they will safely be able to hunt your slugs and snails for many years.

Birds As we approach the colder shorter days of winter make sure bird feeders are kept topped up. Great spotted woodpeckers can be attracted by peanuts and fat balls. In the spring of this year we were lucky enough to have a young woodpecker visiting our fat ball feeder even though it was hung very close to the house. I wasn’t able to get a good photo of our woodpecker unfortunately as I had to keep absolutely still so as not to scare it away. Here it a picture from Google Images: Young great spotted woodpeckers are often fed a diet of moth larvae, so if you do have them in your vicinity, plant a few moth friendly nectar plants such as buddleja, ivy, hawthorn and hazel which will also give the moths shelter.

32 BASINGSTOKE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY Back in September when there was still some daylight left in the evenings our speaker was Derek Donnison-Morgan whose subject was “The Flora of Madeira”. It soon became apparent that this island benefits from a fairly constant temperature throughout the year although more recent years has seen some uncharacteristic changes.

Echium candicans (pictured) is the Pride of Madeira, a plant native to the island and one that is now grown by many. The bees and butterflies enjoy it for its nectar and it doesn’t mind being dry. The island is part of Portugal and is a popular tourist destination with the capital Funchal seeing the arrival of many cruise ships through the year. Being a small island just 35 x 14 miles and mainly as a result of volcanic activity most visits involve a climb of one kind or another.

Derek had toured a couple of years ago and visited several of the gardens open to the public. The Funchal Botanic Gardens has a good display of carpet bedding which stays the same each year but very few of the plants have labels.

The gardens have two unusual areas – one displaying cycads the other palms.

Nearby is the Jardim Orquídea where over 50,000 orchids are on display.

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden, via another cable car, houses a large collection of exotic plants. There is also an old olive tree reportedly from 300BC to be seen. There are several other smaller gardens on the island but all must be accessed with care as paths are steep, often unmaintained and some made of cobbles all of which makes a visit by those less agile more of a trial than a pleasure. Of course if horticulture is not your thing then there is always Madeira cake to sample and Madeira wine although I’m told you need the latter before you arrive in the country as the air-strip is one of the most “interesting” to land at in the world.

Taking the villainous role of Fleshcreep is Mark Little, best known as Joe Mangel in the soap phenomenon Neighbours. He was a popular host of Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast and has presented numerous programmes on British television including ITV’s Wish You Were Here.

He is a regular panellist on The Wright Stuff and recently appeared on Charity Mastermind. Mark’s West End theatre debut was in the one-man play Defending the Caveman which won him an Olivier Award for Best Entertainment.

Taking the title role of Jack is Mark Rhodes, best known as one half of the hugely popular duo Sam and Mark. Most recently seen on CBBC with the popular entertainment show Sam & Mark’s Big Friday Wind Up, for which the duo won their first Children’s BAFTA, Mark has come a long way since Pop Idol in 2003, where he and Sam came 2nd and 3rd. Other television credits include Top Of The Pops Reloaded with Fearne Cotton, the Saturday morning show TMi and quiz show Copy Cats.

The Forest Fairy is Melanie Walters, best known for her role as Stacey’s mum Gwen West in the BAFTA Awardwinning series Gavin and Stacey for the BBC. Melanie has a long list of television appearances including Elliott’s mum in Hollyoaks, Being Human and Under Milk Wood.

The clown of the panto, Simple Simon, is played by Chris Pizzey, best known for being Basil’s side kick Mr Stephen in CBBC’s The Basil Brush Show. Chris has also been seen in The Legend of Dick and Dom, Planet Ajay and The Sarah Jane Adventures as well as Mini ITV’s The Sooty Show.

Chris is also directing the panto at The Anvil, which is once again produced by UK Productions.

Dame Trott is played by actor and playwright Philip Meeks, a seasoned dame with many pantomime appearances under his belt.

Jack and the Beanstalk, at The Anvil, will run from Thursday 10 December 2015 to Sunday 3 January 2016.

34 News from Jolly Olly‛s Coffee Shop Community The Team at Jolly Olly‛s have been touched by the support from The Community after the recent break-in at The Shop. As you may know, over the weekend of 12th and 13th September, Jolly Olly‛s was broken into. Among other things, our Charity Boxes and money which we collect for local people, who sell their products on our Community Stand, were stolen.

Since that weekend, there has been an amazing outpouring of good will from the local community. We would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes and support which have ranged from a friendly hug, to prayers, to generous donations to my son‛s fundraising efforts and the giving of flowers. I would particularly like to mention and thank, Ian, who came to fix the broken locks on the window, the winning Quiz team this month (The Baby Boomers) who donated their prize money to our charities, the anonymous donor who posted £50 through our letter box for the charities and the local lady who found and returned the empty charity boxes to Jolly Olly‛s.

The police have been able to lift a set of finger prints from the boxes and they hope to convict the perpetrator of this crime.

Age Concern Thank you to all of you who have purchased raffle tickets for Afternoon Tea for Two. We have decided to keep the raffle going until December. The draw will take place on Monday 21st December and all profits will be donated to Age Concern. Afternoon tea consists of a garnished platter of sandwiches and a cake stand of cakes with tea or coffee. Hero’s in our Community

My name is Rebecca Strachan, I live in Kempshott and I sing in Korean!

KBS (a broadcasting station in Korea with links to the BBC) together with the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosts a huge K-Pop World Festival every year. It offers talented K-pop fans the chance to fly to Korea to perform with their idols.This year many thousands of people entered from all over the world, 89 regional finals were held and around 180 regional finalists were selected (1 dance winner, 1 vocal winner from each region). The UK regional final was held at 229 The Venue in London on July 5th 2015.

Out of around 180 regional finalists, 14 grand finalists were chosen by KBS. The 14 winning teams will be flown to Changwon in South Korea for a week of cultural excursions, culminating in the final of the festival itself. I have been selected to represent the UK in the final this year!

25,000 people are expected to attend, and established K-pop idols (including some of my favourites - solo singer Ailee, boyband SHINee, girl group AOA) will also be performing on the night. The festival will be broadcast on KBS and uploaded to Youtube so that many thousands more will be able to watch the performances.

I started singing 10 years ago with the dream of some day performing in Korea, and now I’m finally going to perform on a bigger stage than I’d ever imagined. I recorded a Korean song cover which went viral in Korea back in 2007 and was supposed to perform in Korea back then, but it all fell through. I’m really excited that 8 years later I can finally realise that dream.

Well summer is finally over and the dark nights are with us once again.

At this time of year it is tempting to draw the curtains and settle down by the fire, however there is an alternative for those ladies looking for new interests and new friends.

Kempshott Wi is always seeking new members who would enjoy interesting talks and activities and our craft afternoons held monthly offer the opportunity to learn new skills or improve existing ones in the like minded company of others.

At our October meeting we will welcome Terri Reed from Pedlars and Petticoats who will talk about school days in the 1950s. While In November we will draw upon our own members talents to provide some home grown entertainment.We also hope to have a stall at the Kempshott Christmas Festival so do come and say hello.

Wireless Woes

People hate cables and Wi-Fi has been an absoulte success in the house but sometimes it just doesn’t perform as you’d like.

Most people access there wireless network through their internet router as it is already encorpated into the device.The problem is some of these devices use cheap hardware. That said, there’s plenty of ways to improve your wireless access.

1. Find the best place for your router Sometimes you are stuck with the location of your router as it has to sit near the BT socket. If this is the case then make sure it’s not hidden behind any cabinets or near radiators. The Wi-Fi signal is produced by a radio transmitter and whilst these can penetrate solid objects, the power of the signal is greatly reduced. If you can, put the router high up near the ceiling so you get maximum coverage. When sat on the floor, the floor of near a wall, they act like a sponge and suck up the signal; and radiators are even worse.

If your wireless router has two antennas, then it’s a good idea to put them at right angles to each other with one antenna pointing up and one pointing to left or right. This is because your tablet or laptop may have their antenna mounted horizontally or vertically and radio reception is maximized when both the device and router have matched polarisation (antennas pointing along the same plane). Changing the orientation of the router antennas ensures you match at least one of the antennas.

2. Upgrade your hardware This may not be an option for you by many internet service providers (ISP) will let you use another router. Upgrading your router allows you to use more modern and up-to-date technologies. As mentioned earlier, your internet provider gives you a “free” router and they do that by keeping costs down. If you are not able to upgrade then you could use a dedicated Wireless Access Point. This is a separate piece of hardware that connects to your home network and replaces (or augments) the wireless on the ISP router.

3. Check the signal and channel As most of you know, your device usually tells you how strong the signal is by the number of bars it can see.You’ll notice that the further away you are from the router, the lower the signal. But this is only a small part of the problem.The wireless signal uses an ISM band (industrial, scientific and medical) for transmitting data.This is typically 2.450 GHz and 5.800 GHz (shown as 2.4GHz or 5GHz). The problem is that these frequencies (especially the 2.4GHz range) are shared by many devices including microwave ovens, baby monitors, wireless doorbells, cordless phones, etc.The 5GHz frequency is much less crowded but that will change as more devices are now using this range. It’s very hard to check this problem without proper radio equipment but there are tools that let you check the Wi-Fi channel.The 2.4GHz range uses 13 channels (in the UK) which is essentially like a number of lanes on a road. The more devices on each channel, or lane, means more traffic. Using inSSIDer on a PC or iStumbler on a MAC allows you to check the Wi-Fi channels so you can see which is less crowded. These tools can only check the Wi-Fi channel and not the other radio signals so you won’t know if your microwave is causing issues. I visited a site where the Wi-Fi channel was the emptiest but the 2.4GHz analyser I use showed a microwave pumping out a large disruptive single at that frequency.

4. Extend the Range With some routers it is possible to use another Wi-Fi access point as a Wi-Fi bridge. These devices “bridge” or “repeat” the gap between the main router and the access point.The main problem with using a Wi-Fi bridge is that only one device can transmit or receive at the same time so you immediately reduce your bandwidth by 50%. i.e. Router to repeater and then repeater to device.

5. Lack of power You may find that you lose signal at a specific point in the house. The previous points may help but it could be that your house is constructed in such a way that the Wi-Fi signal does not reach the far end. If this is the case then you can use powerline adapters to extend your signal.

These comes in pairs and use the electric power inside the house as a method of moving data from once device to the remote Wi-Fi unit. One device simply plugs into the router with a cable and then into the mains. The other Wi-Fi device plugs into a wall socket in the room you need Wi-Fi and from there transmits the signal.

40 Remembrance Sunday 8th November It probably hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t escaped your attention that this year has seen the 70th anniversary of both the end of war in Europe and in the Far East. Whilst both of these anniversaries commemorate the successful, (albeit at great human cost) conclusion of the Second World War we have also remembered the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

This aerial battle took place when the outcome of the war was very much in balance. It was through the immense bravery and resilience of many young pilots drawn from around the world including many from European countries whose recent experience drove them on to resist so that a sea borne invasion of this country was averted.

Of course it took another five long and difficult years for the defeat of Germany and her allies to be a reality.

Sadly many of those who fought in that conflict are no longer living but of course their memories live on through such things as books, detailing their personal experiences and audio diaries complied after the war.

For many the pain of those experiences was such that they felt unable to recall them; but some families have been privileged to have had those memories shared within them and so form part of their collective family archive.

One of the features of our national life since those days has been the work of various charities that work hard to support individuals and families in need who have had connections with the Armed Forces.

There are of course other ways of remembrance and which if we are directed to them can provide powerful links to the past. Quite rightly post war Britain did much to erase the physical memory of conflict but many examples remain. For instance the New Forest National Park in which many wartime airfields and troop encampments were sited still has traces of the airfields at least for us to visit.

One such physical memorial is situated near Holmsley just off the A35 where The Airfield Memorial has been built to commemorate the numerous airfields that were situated around the forest and to those who flew from them. It is very moving to visit after Remembrance Day to see the wreaths laid by representatives on behalf of such countries such as the Czech Republic; whose airman had escaped from their own conquered country to serve the cause of freedom in a foreign land.

However one of the most poignant for me is the Canadian Memorial near the deer sanctuary at Bolderwood. Here members of the 3rd Canadian Division held church services prior to D-Day. The memorial today holds precious memories of those soldiers whose lives were forever altered by war. It is a special place for me as my late father was a Canadian who volunteered at the outbreak of war and who served in such diverse places as West Africa and India.

The point is that in both of these locations each year and accessible throughout the year act as a reminder of those men and women who fought and in so many cases died on our behalf for us to enjoy the democratic freedoms of today.

So where ever our memories come from of these conflicts and of course from those before and since we would do well to heed the message that they have for each of us.

Remembrance Sunday will be on November 8th 10:00 am at St Markâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church Homesteads Road and there will be the Civic Service at 11:00 am at the War Memorial adjacent to the civic offices on the same day.
