World Scientific Series on Nonlinear Science Series A SYNCHRONIZATION OF SYSTEMS WITH TIME-DELAYED COUPLING

by Erik Steur (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium), Toshiki Oguchi (Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan) & Henk Nijmeijer (Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands)

The book aims to provide the tools for analyzing the synchronization of identical systems under time-delayed coupling. On the structural assumption that the system itself is semi-passive — i.e. the system is behaving as a passive system outside some ball-conditions ensuring synchronization of two systems under time-delayed coupling — the framework is extended to the more general situation of a network with time-delayed diffusive coupling. Conditions are derived for time-delay and coupling strength when the network exhibits synchronization or partial synchronization. The theory is illustrated by a number of simulation examples, providing also the experimental results on a network of electronic brain cells.

Readership: Graduate students, researchers and academics interested in complex systems and control theory.

FUNDAMENTALS OF CONTINUUM MECHANICS

University, China)

This textbook offers a concise yet rigorous treatment of continuum mechanics at the introductory level. It differs from traditional textbooks by combining tensor analysis with mechanical analysis and teaching the former’s basics within a single chapter. Readers of this book are not required to have learned tensor analysis in the context of engineering mathematics beforehand.

The basic objectives of continuum mechanics are included in this textbook to facilitate an easy and thorough understanding of the concepts of continuum mechanics and elasticity. In addition, the mathematics and physics of deformation and kinematics are introduced and studied from the concept of stretch rather than from the traditional approach of strain. The large deformation problem of new smart soft materials is also introduced.

This textbook provides illustrative examples and problem sets that enable readers to test their understanding of the subject matter and utilize the tools developed in the formulation of engineering problems. It is suitable for students whose undergraduate disciplines are non-mechanics-related fields. It also helps students or engineers who use the finite element method (FEM) to analyze problems to interpret the results produced by FEM software.

Readership: Undergraduate and postgraduate students, and professional engineers interested in learning about continuum mechanics, particularly those from non-mechanics-related disciplines.

FLUID GAUGE THEORY

New Perspectives on Fluid Mechanics from Theoretical Physics by Tsutomu (Jixin) Kambe

This new approach to Fluid Mechanics from the gauge-theoretic viewpoint is based on a new formulation proposed in two original papers — Fluid Gauge Theory and Gauge Symmetries in Physical Fields.

Contrary to the traditional formulation, the equation of mass conservation is deduced from the gauge symmetry of background field, existing inherently within the flow field. Thus, the fluid field is described by a combined system of a fluid-flow field and a background field. The formulation can be applied to study the mechanism of enhanced dissipation theoretically within turbulent flows.

In the second part, Fluid Mechanics is considered in the language of curved spacetime, enabling the description of fluid motion in a weak gravitational field. The space-geometry instructs fluid-matter how to move, and the matter directs the geometry how to curve. Thus, the gravitational force is taken within the framework of Fluid Mechanics as an internal field rather than external one.

With a common platform in electromagnetism and theory of gravitation in theoretical physics, the material in the book is unique.

• Useful for researchers and postgraduate students not only in the field of fluid mechanics, but also turbulence, mechanical engineering, physics, geophysics, or space physics, and also to general readers interested in science

• Provides a key to resolving the historical riddle of the dust striation pattern observed in the Kundt’s experiment of resonance tube of acoustics in 1866, more than 150 years ago; Computer experiments are currently carried out to study the Kundt’s experiment of acoustic resonance

Readership: Graduate students and researchers in the field of fluid mechanics, mechanical engineering, physics, geophysics or space physics.

ELEMENTARY MECHANICS

(In 2 Volumes)

by John G Papastavridis (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA)

This is a comprehensive and state-of-theart compendium of classical or Newtonian (non relativistic and non quantum) mechanics from an advanced and unified viewpoint, namely, from the continuum, or field, form of the fundamental principles of linear and angular momentum of Euler, Cauchy, Hamel et al. The title adjective “elementary” simply means no Lagrangean and no Hamiltonian theories and methods. Yet, in spite of its high level, this extensive work of more than 1450 dense pages of text, and more than 350 pages of galleries is eminently readable and inclusive. The overall style is informal, all ahistorical and intuition-deadening jargon and formalisms (“epsilonics”) have been intentionally avoided. The mathematics, typically an Achilles heel of modern mechanics books, especially those in applied or multi-body mechanics, has been kept to the simplest necessary for a work of this level and scope. As such, the book continues, renovates, and expands the grand tradition laid by such educational 20th century “elementary mechanics” classics as those written by Butenin, Coe, Fox, Hamel, Loitsianskii, Lur’e, Magnus, Milne, Nielsen, Parkus, Pars, Stäckel, Synge, Szabó, Voigt, among others.

Readership: Teachers, and Researchers in most areas of engineering (especially aerospace, mechanical, and engineering mechanics), physics, and applied mathematics.

NONLOCAL CONTINUUM DAMAGE AND PLASTICITY

Theory and Computations

Modeling of the evolution of distributed damage and plasticity such as micro-cracking, void formation, dislocation densities, and shear bands necessitates strain-softening constitutive models. The nonlocal continuum concept has emerged as an effective means for regularizing the (initial) boundary value problems with strain softening, capturing the size effects observed in experiments, capturing small-scale deviations from local continuum models caused by material heterogeneity, and avoiding spurious localization that gives rise to pathological mesh sensitivity in numerical computations. This book discusses the integral and gradient formulations of nonlocality, computational aspects, and comparison of approaches and emphasizes recent developments in the bridging of material length scales.

Readership: Researchers in the academic community, national laboratories in materials and solid mechanics, companies in engineering mechanics and materials, and graduate students.

NANOPARTICLE REINFORCED COMPOSITES FOR STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS

(Florida Atlantic University, USA) &

(The University of Liverpool, UK)

Traditionally the subject of nanomaterials and nanoscience belonged to physicists and chemists over the last several decades since the legendary lecture given by Nobel laureate Richard P Feynman (Physics) in 1959, “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom”. However, the idea of nanoparticle reinforced composites or nanocomposites came only about a decade ago after the remarkable discovery of carbon nanotubes and buckyballs. Infusion of these nanoparticles into various polymer matrices and their precursors opened up an important area of research in enhancing the properties of composite materials as we know today. The idea is synonymous with that expressed by Federal Agency such as National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) that “advances at the nanoscale will be meaningless if they cannot be interfaced well with the technology at larger material components, systems and architecture to produce usable devices”. The development of structural nanocomposites from nanoparticle reinforced polymers addresses that concern precisely to the point. With this thematic idea of research in mind, there has been a flurry of activities within the last few years in US as well as in other countries, especially in the composite materials community to develop nanocomposites purely aiming structural applications. Phenomenal improvement in nanocomposite properties have been reported over a wide range of areas.

The idea behind this monograph is to systematically describe the scientific basis of nanoparticle dispersion into various polymers, their interactions at the atomic scale, and their influence on the bulk properties of composite materials. The attempt will be to trace the source of such significant improvement in material properties and capture the momentum of this important area of research in materials science.

Readership: Graduate students and researchers in nanocomposites.

OPERATIONAL PROCESSES IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

This is the first mechanical engineering textbook that deals with the operational processes of systems: the analysis of their characteristics of motion. A system’s motion often must comply with certain constraints, such as acceptable ranges of acceleration or deceleration. Determining the parameters of motion requires the composing and solving of differential equations that describe the system’s operational processes. Calculus courses for mechanical engineering programs offer a method based on characteristic equations, which allows the solving of differential equations for onedegree-of-freedom systems. However, this method does not work for two-degree-of-freedom systems, such as shock absorbing mechanisms.

This textbook presents the solutions for the entire spectrum of linear differential equations of motion for one- and two-degree-of-freedom systems. These solutions are obtained using the Laplace Transform methodology along with a newly presented table of 101 Laplace Transform pairs.

HYDRODYNAMICS OF WAVE-VEGETATION INTERACTIONS

edited by V Sriram (Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India), Thorsten Stoesser (University College London, UK), Shiqiang Yan (City, University of London, UK) & K Murali (Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India)

Free-surface flow (or wave) interaction with vegetation is a complex subject. In order to understand the underlying physical processes either physical experiments or numerical simulations, or ideally in complement, can be employed. Both approaches face lots of challenges. For example in experiments, the research question is how to scale-down appropriately the large-scale physics and how to interpret the experimental data. In numerical simulations, how to approximate numerically the complex wave-multiple rigid or flexible structures (vegetal stems) including the resolution of turbulence at all spatial and temporal scales.

This book reviews the state of the art of the research in the area of wave-vegetation interaction for coastal applications using numerical and experimental approaches. The reference text will be useful to students, early-career researchers, teachers and practicing engineers in the field of ocean engineering, civil engineering and climate change.

PRETREATED BIOMASS

Physical Properties and Biofuels

Production edited by Jaya

Tumuluru (Southwestern Cotton Ginning Research Laboratory, USA)

First-generation ethanol plants did not have many operational challenges as the feedstocks (e.g., corn) used for fuel production are dense, stable, storable, and shippable commodity-type products with fewer conversion challenges. These feedstock properties led the first-generation largescale biorefineries to grow exponentially. In the second-generation biofuels, the feedstocks used are agricultural and forest residues, dedicated energy crops, industrial wastes, and municipal solid waste. When the industry tested these feedstocks for biofuel production, they faced flowability, storage, transportation, and conversion issues. One way to overcome some of the feeding, handling, transportation, and variable moisture challenges is to densify the biomass. Pellet mills and briquette presses are commonly used to produce densified products. The densified products have uniform size, shape, higher bulk density, and better downstream conversion performance. Also, the densified products are aerobically stable and can be stored for longer durations without any loss in quality.

This book’s focus is on understanding how the densification process variables, biomass types and their blends, mechanical preprocessing, and thermal and chemical pretreatment methods impact the quality of the densified products produced for biofuel production. Finally, the book also explores the conversion performance of densified biomass for biofuel production.

Readership: Undergraduate and graduate students, university professors, national laboratory researchers, independent researchers, industry, biorefinery managers, biomass process engineers, policy makers.

HANDBOOK ON MECHANICS OF INELASTIC SOLIDS

(In 2 Volumes)

Volume 1: Plasticity, Creep and Viscous Deformation

Volume 2: Finite and Cyclic Deformation; Structural Applications by David Rees (Brunel University London, UK)

This handbook covers a number of the more recent developments regarding the mechanics of deforming solids. In recent years, much progress has been reported in the wide-ranging mechanical behaviour of solids under stress. Here the term stress in a solid arises from a number of external actions including direct tension, compression, pressure, bending, shear and torsion. Many of the topics covered are yet to find their way into the standard texts, which are often restricted to isotropic elasticity and plasticity.

In this two-volume work, what might previously have been regarded as disparate, ‘specialist’ topics have been placed within a wider mechanics arena to emphasise their common, underlying principles. That arena is taken generally as one of inelasticity for dealing with the essential mechanics of these phenomena. Therein, this text brings together theory, experimental data, key references, examples and exercises, particularly those that relate to the important advances in the subject, both old and new.

Readership: This handbook is intended for an academic readership and is designed for researchers, engineers and advanced undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students studying or dealing with inelastic solids and/or classical mechanics.

MECHANICS OF FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS

Yang (University of NebraskaLincoln, USA)

Conventional books on the mechanics of materials treat elastic deformations of solids through one-dimensional models for the extension of rods, torsion of shafts and bending of beams. In functional materials, mechanical, thermal, electric and magnetic fields interact among themselves, and therefore, need a more comprehensive model.

This book presents a systematic treatment of the three-dimensional theories for these coupled phenomena and the corresponding onedimensional models for extension, torsion and bending. This book adopts a mixed approach by devoting the first half of the book to the development of the three-dimensional theories of elastic, thermal, electric and magnetic fields as well as their interactions in dielectrics, conductors and semiconductors. The remainder of the book presents the onedimensional models for extension, torsion and bending systematically.
