In recent years street art has grown bolder, more ornate, more sophisticated and, in many cases, more acceptable... Yet unsanctioned public art remains the problem child of cultural expression, the last outlaw of visual disciplines. It has also become a global phenomenon of the 21st century. Made in collaboration with featured artists, Trespass examines the rise and global reach of graffiti and urban art, tracing key figures, events and movements of self-expression in the city’s social space, and the history of urban reclamation, protest, and illicit performance. The first book to present the full historical sweep, global reach and technical developments of the street art movement, Trespass features key works by 150 artists,and connects four generations of visionary outlaws including Jean Tinguely, Spencer Tunick, Keith Haring, Os Gemeos, Jenny Holzer, Barry McGee, Gordon Matta-Clark, Shepard Fairey, Blu, Billboard Liberation Front, Guerrilla Girls and Banksy, among others. It also includes dozens of previously unpublished photographs of long-lost works and legendary, ephemeral urban artworks. This book also include unpublished images of street art by Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, unpublished photographs by Subway Art luminary Martha Cooper, unpublished photos from the personal archives of selected artists and incisive essays by Anne Pasternak (director of public arts fund Creative Time) and civil rights lawyer Tony Serra and also with a very special feature, an exclusive preface by Banksy.

The author Carlo McCormick is a pop culture critic, curator and Senior Editor of Paper magazine. His numerous books, monographs and catalogs include Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture, The Downtown Book: The New York Art Scene 1974-1984, and Dondi White: Style Master General. His work has appeared in Art in America, Art News, Artforum and many other publications. The curators Marc & Sara Schiller founded Wooster Collective in 2001, a website that celebrates and plays a crucial role in documenting otherwise ephemeral street art. Based in New York City, the collective curated most of the contemporary images in Trespass. Its “Wooster On Paper” series presents the work of international artists in limited edition books. The publisher is Ethel Seno worked with William Claxton on Jazzlife and New Orleans 1960, and David LaChapelle on Artists & Prostitutes and Heaven to Hell. Having grown up in Tokyo, she feels most at home in urban environments and currently resides in Los Angeles.

Da qualche anno la street art si è fatta più audace, più ricercata, più sofisticata e, in molti casi, più accettabile. L’arte pubblica abusiva rimane, comunque, la figlia ribelle dell’espressione culturale, l’ultima fra le arti visive a vivere ancora al di fuori della legge. Cosa che non le ha impedito di affermarsi come uno dei fenomeni globali del XXI secolo. Realizzato in collaborazione con gli artisti cui è dedicato, Trespass passa in rassegna l’ascesa e l’espansione dei graffiti e dell’urban art, tracciando il profilo delle figure chiave, raccontando gli eventi ed i movimenti espressivi nati nel tessuto urbano e ripercorrendo la storia delle iniziative di bonifica urbana, delle proteste e delle performance non autorizzate. The System as quality.

A system is defined as a set of coordinated elements that work in synergy with each other, to create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. So we can construe a “system” as a value multiplier that, consisting of several interacting parts, contributes to achieving a goal, or rather facilitates it, ensuring a more effective result.

Il Sistema come qualità.

Un sistema, è definito come un insieme di elementi coordinati che lavorando in sinergia fra di loro, rafforzano la valenza degli elementi che lo compongono, generando un’efficacia superiore a quella che sarebbe originata dai singoli componenti.

Dunque possiamo intendere un “sistema” come un potenziatore di valore, che costituito da più parti interagenti tra loro, contribuisce al raggiungimento di uno scopo, anzi lo facilita, garantendo al contempo una maggiore efficacia nel risultato.

Sempre tesa a pensare e proporre soluzioni in grado di migliorare costantemente le performance degli acconciatori di tutto il mondo, Kemon ha da tempo fatto proprie le peculiarità e la forza del “sistema”.

L’illustrazione è connaturata al mondo della moda, non solo in quanto mezzo espressivo ed origine di qualsiasi capo ma anche per ciò che rappresenta nella creazione di stampe e fantasie, spesso gli artisti illustrano le ultime creazioni degli stilisti mentre le modelle sono ancora in passerella. Pensiamo, quindi, sia venuto il momento che la nostra serie Illustration Now! celebri come si deve il mondo dell’illustrazione di moda: in questo volume troverete lavori inediti di 90 artisti internazionali fra cui Ruben Toledo, Aurore de La Morinerie, Bil Donovan, Tanya Ling, e Jean-Philippe Delhomme. Nelle pagine che seguono l’introduzione dell’esperto di illustrazione Steven Heller, un saggio storico della storica dell’arte e della moda Adelheid Rasche sviscera il tema in profondità. Partendo dal XVII secolo, l’autrice ripercorre le tappe principali della storia dell’illustrazione fino ai giorni nostri; la retrospettiva è accompagnata da immagini imperdibili fra cui un’acquaforte giovanile di François Watteau, un disegno realizzato da Paul Iribe per il libro del celebre stilista parigino Paul Poiret ed illustrazioni realizzate da acclamati maestri della moderna illustrazione di moda come René Gruau e Antonio Lopez e artisti più recenti come François Berthoud.

Illustration is integral to fashion design not only as a means of expression, and the starting point of every design, but also for patterns and prints as well as magazine editorial illustrations. Often, artists will even illustrate the newest looks directly from the catwalks. It’s high time we celebrated fashion illustration in our Illustration Now! series: here you’ll find new work from 90 artists around the globe, including Ruben Toledo, Aurore de La Morinerie, Bil Donovan, Tanya Ling, and JeanPhilippe Delhomme. The book features quotes by experts from the fashion world: Valentino compliments the work of Gladys Perint Palmer; voices out of the studios of Maison Martin Margiela, Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, and H&M add their praise for the talents in the book...

Following an introduction by illustration expert Steven Heller, the historical essay by art and fashion historian Adelheid Rasche provides an in-depth exploration of the subject. Looking back to the 17th century, she draws a timeline of fashion illustration until today, accompanied by images such as an early etching by François Watteau, a drawing by Paul Iribe for the book of the famous Parisian couturier Paul Poiret, and illustrations by the highly acclaimed masters of modern fashion illustration René Gruau and Antonio Lopez, as well as, from more recent years, François Berthoud.

The editor is Julius Wiedemann was born in Brazil, studied graphic design and marketing, and was an art editor for digital and design magazines in Tokyo. His many Taschen digital and media titles include Illustration Now!, Advertising Now, Logo Design, and Brand Identity Now!

The souvenir...

La pin-up è viva, presente e ben integrata nell’era di Internet; l’arte dell’illustrazione ormai non ha più limiti Maria Dedominici Hanno fatto impazzire generazioni di uomini, immortalate su calendari, copertine, paginoni centrali o addirittura carte da gioco: sono le pin-up. Nate come ritratti ad olio, le pin-up furono presto applicate sui supporti più svariati; hanno fatto bella mostra di sé sulla fusoliera dei bombardieri Americani e, con il passare degli anni, sono diventate simbolo di quei luoghi tutti maschili che sono garage e caserme. L’avvento dell’era del “politically correct” non ne ha minimamente scalfito l’attrattiva.

Reduce dalla Grande Depressione, l’America era alla disperata ricerca di un’iconografia distintiva in grado di risollevarla dalla malinconia del bianco e nero in cui era piombata e la trovò nelle illustrazioni in Technicolor del sogno americano realizzate da Gil Elvgren. La sua tecnica, che gli valse l’appellativo di “Norman Rockwell del cheesecake”, consisteva nel ritrarre modelle, in stile iper-realistico e con gambe più lunghe, acconciature più vistose e seni che sfidavano qualsiasi legge di gravità: in poche parole, una vera delizia per gli occhi, in grado di risollevare il morale del più nostalgico fra i soldati.

Il termine “pin-up” si riferisce ad un particolare stile di fotografia ed illustrazione pensata e realizzata per essere affissa alla parete con le “puntine”. Uno stile che, venne ad affermarsi durante la II Guerra Mondiale quando milioni di giovani costretti a trascorrere lunghi periodi lontani dalle loro belle si trovarono ad avere disperato bisogno di evasione. Le pin-up hanno lasciato nella moderna cultura popolare un segno indelebile che tutt’oggi non accenna a sbiadirsi. Infatti, grazie ad Internet, oggi le pin-up sono più popolari che mai e a distanza di pochi click. Lo stile è classico e nostalgico; abbigliamento, make-up ed acconciature strizzano l’occhio alla moda, l’atteggiamento è graziosamente kitsch. La pin-up art può essere suddivisa in due macrocategorie, quella dell’illustrazione e quella della fotografia. I disegni pin-up realizzati da Gil Elvgren e Alberto Vargas sono ormai nella leggenda. Entrambi gli artisti realizzavano le loro illustrazioni idealizzate basandosi su fotografie di modelle in carne e ossa. Schiere di fotografi hanno poi utilizzato questo stile per realizzare calendari fotografici pin-up.

Fra i temi più in voga come non ricordare la casalinga sexy, la bellezza da spiaggia, la ragazza con il cane, la ragazza in bicicletta, la ragazza in camera da letto e via dicendo. Date soltanto un’occhiata a queste incantevoli bellezze...

“Per comprendere la complessa identità dell’attrice del XIX secolo, occorre anche capire come la considerazione che all’epoca si aveva delle potenzialità della donna fosse indissolubilmente legata alla sua sessualità e a sua volta legata a doppio filo al suo livello di visibilità nella sfera pubblica”, secondo la storica Maria Elena Buszek, a prescindere dalla razza, dalla classe di appartenenza o dal retroterra culturale, si riteneva che alla maggiore visibilità pubblica di una donna corrispondesse una sua maggiore disponibilità sessuale. Fra le celebrità ritenute sex symbol, una delle più famose fra le pin-up d’antan era Betty Grable, il cui poster era onnipresente negli armadietti dei soldati Americani della II Guerra Mondiale. Nell’Europa ante I Guerra Mondiale, l’oggetto del desiderio aveva le sembianze di Fernande Barrey, alias Miss Fernande, con tutta probabilità la prima pin-up nel senso moderno del termine. Diversamente da ciò che avveniva in America, nell’Europa libera da vincoli bigotti e bacchettoni Miss Barrey poteva far sfoggio della sua procacità e mostrarsi tranquillamente come mamma l’aveva fatta. Le sue fotografie erano care ai soldati di ambo i fronti della I Guerra Mondiale.

Il glamour è tornato...! Charles G. Martignette, autore di diversi libri sulle pin-up è stato un mercante d’arte e collezionista di opere originali di artisti Americani del Novecento. La sua galleria di Hallandale Beach, ospitava la più vasta collezione di illustrazioni commerciali al mondo. A partire dal 1975, Martignette ha pubblicato numerosi articoli sull’illustrazione nella stampa, nella pubblicità, nei calendari, nei libri tascabili nonché sulle illustrazioni pulp, glamour e pin-up. Opere della sua collezione sono state esibite presso la Smithsonian Institution ed in molti altri musei. Charles G. Martignette è mancato nel 2008 ad Hallandale, Florida. L’arte dell’illustrazione ormai non ha quasi più limiti. Oggi, le ambientazioni, il vestiario ed i riferimenti culturali della pin-up art sono molto più ricchi di un tempo. Gli artisti interpretano diversi stili come quello comic book, quello fantasy, quello fetish e, naturalmente, il classico pin-up. Altrettanto fanno i fotografi con risultati spettacolari.

E oggi si possono ammirare anche numerosi e pregevolissimi tatuaggi. Sono proprio bei tempi per le pin-up!

The pin-up girl is alive and well in the internet age, the art of illustration is now almost without limit Maria Dedominici

They’ve been exciting generations of men, on calendars and covers, as centrefolds or even on playing cards: pin-ups. What started as an exercise in oils was soon taken up in various media, pin-up mascots graced the fuselages of American fighters, and became an essential feature of the male world of garages and barracks. And the age of political correctness hasn’t ended their appeal. Post-depression America was in desperate need of a defining iconography that would lift it out of the black and white doldrums, and it came in the form of Gil Elvgren’s Technicolor fantasies of the American dream. His technique, which earned him a reputation as “The Norman Rockwell of cheesecake”, involved photographing models and then painting them into gorgeous hyper-reality, with longer legs, more flamboyant hair and gravity-defying busts, and in the process making them the perfect moral-boosting eye-candy for every homesick private.

The term pin-up refers to a photographic and illustration style which is printed and meant to be pinned up on a wall. This style originated at the beginning of the 20th century but became very popular during World War II as millions of young men spent weeks and months away from their sweethearts and longed for an escape. The pin-up girl has became an indelible part of modern popular culture and endures to this day. In fact, thanks to the internet, the pin-up girl is more popular than ever and only a few clicks away. The style is classic and nostalgic with a nod of appreciation to the fashion, makeup, hair and a cute campy attitude. We love it. Pin-up art falls mostly into two categories, illustration and photography. The pinup drawings

by Gil Elvgren and Alberto Vargas are legendary. Both would use real life models to pose for working photographs and then draw idealized illustrations for print. Countless photographers used the pin-up style to put together pin-up photograph calendars. The styles were ideal, gorgeous, innocent and flirty. Common themes in the past were, sexy housework, beach beauty, girl with her dog, girl on her bike, girl in her bedroom, and on and on. Just take a look at these lovely beauties...

“To understand both the complicated identity and the subversive nature of the 19th-century actress, one must also understand that the era’s views on women's potential were inextricably tied to their sexuality, which in turn was tied to their level of visibility in the public sphere: regardless of race, class or background, it was generally assumed that the more public the woman, the more ‘public,’ or available, her sexuality”, according to historian Maria Elena Buszek. Being sexually fantasized, famous actresses in early 20th-century film were both drawn and photographed and put on posters to be sold for personal entertainment. Among the celebrities who were considered sex symbols, one of the most popular early pin-up girls was Betty Grable, whose poster was ubiquitous in the lockers of G.I.s during World War II. In Europe, prior to the First World War, were the likes of Fernande Barrey (aka Miss Fernande), arguably the world’s first pin-up as is known in the modern sense.

Unlike America, Europe was not held by sanctimonious restraints and Miss Barrey displayed ample cleavage and full frontal nudity. Her pictures were cherished by soldiers on both sides of the First World War conflict.

Now glamour is back...! Charles G. Martignette author of several pin-up books was an art dealer and collector of original paintings by 20th century American illustrators and artists. His gallery in Hallandale Beach, housed the world’s largest collection of commercial illustration art. As of 1975 he published numerous articles about magazine, advertising, calendar, pulp, paperback, glamour and pin-up art. Paintings from his collection have been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution as well as many other American and European museums. Charles G. Martignette died in 2008 in Hallandale, Florida.

The pin-up girl is alive and well in the internet age. The art of illustration is now almost without limit. The settings, the clothing, and the cultural references used to stage pin-up art is much richer than in the past. Artists mix different styles such as comic book, fantasy, sci-fi, fetish and of course classic pin-up. Pin-up photographers do the same and achieve some spectacular results. And, you’ll now see a lot of great tattoo art featured as well. It’s a great time for pinup!

Documents L’italia avrebbe grandi potenzialità nella valorizzazione del patrimonio se sapesse sfruttare il proprio marchio culturale Sofia Grandi L’enorme ricchezza del patrimonio artistico e la sua grandissima frammentazione ne rendono difficile una valorizzazione adeguata sui mercati internazionali. Una maggiore consapevolezza del ruolo del brand culturale e della sua tutela attraverso la proprietà intellettuale potrebbe essere di grande aiuto, prendendo a modello alcuni esempi tratti dalla recente esperienza internazionale. La prima città italiana a dotarsi di un marchio è stata Venezia intezionata a investire in iniziative volte alla rivitalizzazione socioeconomica della città i proventi derivati dall’utilizzo della sua immagine e del suo nome. Il “Marchio Venezia” prevede di concedere a terzi l’utilizzo del marchio per attività di markenting filantropico, per la realizzazione di prodotti e servizi o per l’organizzazione di eventi.

Il nostro patrimonio culturale versa in una situazione di grave crisi. I fondi a disposizione delle istituzioni museali italiane spesso non bastano neppure per la gestione ordinaria e la stessa conservazione di larga parte del loro immenso patrimonio è oggi sempre più a rischio. Di questo passo, i danni rischiano di essere irreversibili. Urge quindi un cambio di prospettiva, un passaggio dall’attuale approccio prevalentemente passivo di attesa di risorse, evidentemente non più sostenibile nell’attuale crisi delle finanze pubbliche, a un approccio attivo capace di generare risorse autonome. È un cambiamento di prospettiva possibile, già ampiamente esplorato in altri ordinamenti molto simili al nostro, e si è dimostrato perfettamente in grado di preservare e valorizzare tanto il patrimonio culturale quanto l’immagine internazionale di quelle istituzioni “pioniere” del nuovo trend. Le potenzialità, del resto, sono enormi. Al riguardo basti qualche numero. Abbiamo in Italia oltre 200 musei statali (in Francia ve ne sono 30), 108 aree archeologiche statali, 112 monumenti statali aperti al pubblico. Abbiamo poi oltre quattromila istituzioni non statali (di cui 3.409 musei, 802 monumenti aperti al pubblico, 129 siti archeologici), il 45,5% dei quali dipendenti da Comuni. Solo in Toscana vi sono oltre 600 musei, uno ogni seimila abitanti. Si tratta di numeri senza pari nel mondo. A questi numeri, tuttavia, non corrispondono equivalenti ritorni.

The enormous richness of its heritage and its great fragmentation make it difficult to promote it properly in international markets. Greater awareness of the role of its cultural brand and its protection through intellectual property rights could be of great help on the model of several examples taken from recent international experience. The first Italian city to adopt a brand was Venice with the aim of investing in the social and economic revitalization of the city with the proceeds from the use of its image and name. The “Venice Brand” is now granted to third-parties for philanthropic marketing activities, the development of products and services, or for the organization of events.

Our cultural heritage is facing a serious crisis. The funds available to Italian museums are often insufficient for even ordinary management and the very preservation of their immense heritage is now increasingly at risk. At this rate, the damage is likely to be irreversible. So, there is an urgent need for a change of perspective from the present predominantly passive approach of waiting for resources, which is clearly not sustainable in the current public finance crisis, to an active approach capable of generating autonomous resources. This change of perspective is possible and has already been widely explored in other systems very similar to ours. It has been demonstrated to be perfectly capable of preserving and enhancing both cultural heritage and the international image of those institutions pioneering this new trend. Moreover, the potential is enormous. In Italy, we have 200 state museums (France has 30), 108 state archaeological sites and 112 state monuments open to the public. Then, we have over four thousand non-state institutions (of which 3,409 museums, 802 monuments open to the public and 129 archaeological sites), with 45.5% of these dependent on municipalities for support. In Tuscany, there are over 600 museums, one for every six thousand inhabitants. These numbers are unmatched in the world. But, to these numbers, there are no equivalent returns.

Poetico, elegante, anticonformista, Raf Simons è uno degli stilisti più interessanti dell’attuale panorama della moda. La sua passione per l’arte, la musica e la cultura contemporanea contamina tutte le sue creazioni. Dopo aver mosso i primi passi nel design industriale, Raf irrompe sulla scena nel 1995, lanciando il suo marchio di abbigliamento per uomo. Raf graduated in Industrial and Furniture Design from a college in Genk during 1991. During this time, Raf congregated at Antwerp cafe Witzli-Poetzli with the likes of Olivier Rizzo, Willy Vanerperre, David Vandewal and then-girlfriend Veronique Branquinho to discuss fashion, namely Helmut Lang and Martin Margiela. He began working as a furniture designer for various galleries, having previously interned at the design studio of Walter Van Beirendonck between 1991-1993.

Van Beirendonck took him to the Paris Fashion Week and that was when Raf first saw a fashion show, Martin Margiela’s all-white show in 1991, which inspired Simons to turn to fashion design.

Rei kawakubo L’abito concettuale, storia ed arte del marchio Kawakubo Andreas M.Jürgen Rei Kawakubo, enigmatica fondatrice, amministratrice ed anima dell’innovativa casa di moda giapponese Comme des Garçons, ha un’originale e personale visione creativa che, dal settore dell’abbigliamento, si allarga fino all’arredamento, all’architettura e al graphic design, in costante sfida al pensiero convenzionale. La rivista i-D passa in rassegna l’articolato mondo concettuale di Rei, attingendo dagli archivi e riproponendo interviste che testimoniamo come questa casa di moda non abbia conosciuto esitazioni nella continua sfida agli ideali occidentali di linea del corpo e struttura dell’abito. In rottura con ogni convenzione, Rei continua a ridefinire i confini della moda che fonde alla perfezione con l’arte nei connubi più inaspettati. Rei non ha avuto un’educazione formale come stilista, ma ha studiato belle arti e letteratura presso l’Università di Keio. Dopo la laurea e le prime esperienze lavorative in un’azienda tessile, inizia la carriera di stilista freelance nel 1967.

I tessuti erano spesso semplicemente drappeggiati sul corpo, non cuciti, e caratterizzati da fori, orli incompleti e sfilacciati. Sfidando la tradizione Rei suscita grande clamore al suo debutto alle sfilate dove i giornalisti etichettano le sue creazioni come “Hiroshima chic”. Dalla fine degli anni ’80, la tavolozza di colori della stilista si arricchisce di nuove nuance. Rei Kawakubo, the enigmatic head of innovative Japanese fashion house Comme des Garçons, has a special vision which extends beyond clothing to furniture, architecture, and graphic design, always defying conventional thinking. i-D examines Rei’s complex and conceptual world, digging through the magazines archive and re-visiting interviews which explore how the fashion house continues to challenge the Western ideals of body shape and garment construction. Breaking the conventional rules, Rei continues to push boundaries, perfectly marrying fashion with art in the most unexpected of ways.

She is an untrained fashion designer, but studied fine arts and literature at Keio University. After graduation, Rei worked in a textile company and began working as a freelance stylist in 1967.

In 1973, she established her own company, Comme des Garçons Co. Ltd in Tokyo and opened up her first boutique in Tokyo in 1975. Starting out with women’s clothes, Kawakubo added a men’s line in 1978. Three years later, she started presenting her fashion lines in Paris each season, opening up a boutique in Paris in 1982.

Comme des Garçons specialises in anti-fashion, austere, sometimes deconstructed garments. During the 1980s, her garments were primarily in black, dark grey or white. The materials were often draped around the body and featured frayed, unfinished edges along with holes and a general asymmetrical shape. Challenging the established notions of beauty she created an uproar at her debut Paris fashion show where journalists labeled her clothes “Hiroshima chic” amongst other things. Since the late 1980s, her colour palette has grown somewhat. Rei likes to have input in all the various aspects of her business, rather than just focussing on clothes and accessories. She is greatly involved in graphic design, advertising, and shop interiors believing that all these things are a part of one vision and are inextricably linked. Her Aoyama, Tokyo store is known for its sloping glass facade decorated with blue dots. Rei published her own bi-annual magazine, “Six” (standing for ‘sixth sense’), in the early 1990s. It featured very little text and consisted mainly of photographs and images that she deemed inspiring.

La rivista i-D vi regala un viaggio esclusivo nel mondo dell’acclamata stilista Vivienne Westwood. Il libro ripropone interviste ed articoli che ripercorrono la carriera della stilista dalle prime esperienze punk degli anni ’80 ai giorni nostri, documentando la sua reinterpretazione di elementi sartoriali ritenuti estinti come il corsetto e la crinolina, le sue convinzioni sulla capacità della moda di generare differenze ed il percorso che l’ha portata ad essere una delle più originali ed influenti stiliste del Regno Unito. Vivienne Westwood, (nata Vivienne Isabel Swire l’8 Aprile 1941) ha il merito di aver fatto uscire lo stile punk e new wave dalla nicchia elevandoli a tendenza. Si fa notare realizzando alcuni capi per la boutique di Malcolm McLaren sulla King’s Road, divenuta famosa con il nome “Sex”. La sua capacità di coniugare moda e musica ebbe un ruolo fondamentale nella nascita della scena punk degli anni ’70, dominata dalla creatura di McLaren, i Sex Pistols. Vivienne trovò una profonda ispirazione nella potenza d’urto del punk, interessata a “vedere se ci fosse modo di mettere in qualche modo un bastone fra gli ingranaggi del sistema”. Successivamente apre quattro negozi a Londra per poi espandersi su tutto il territorio del Regno Unito e, quindi, a livello mondiale, proponendo una gamma sempre più vasta di articoli, alcuni dei quali legati alle molte cause politiche di cui è sostenitrice come la campagna per il disarmo nucleare, la lotta contro i cambiamenti climatici e il movimento per i diritti civili Liberty. L’interesse per il fenomeno punk è stato deteminante: “Per me aveva un valore messianico”. Pelle nera e borchie in stile sado-maso, spille da balia, lamette, catene da bicicletta o dello sciacquone indossate sugli abiti come accessori, collari borchiati indossati a come di monili e make-up ed acconciature per l’epoca scandalosi. Fra i marchi di fabbrica dello stile punk, l’adozione di fantasie tradizionali scozzesi come il classico tartan. In conclusione, ancora oggi le sue creazioni si caratterizzano per l’insolita interpretazione dello stile sartoriale tipicamente Sette-Ottocentesco che le rende uniche ed irriverenti.

Dame Vivienne Westwood, (born Vivienne Isabel Swire on 8 April 1941) was largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashions into the mainstream. She came to public notice when she made clothes for Malcolm McLaren’s boutique in the King’s Road, which became famous as “Sex”. It was their ability to synthesise clothing and music that shaped the 1970s British punk scene, dominated by McLaren’s band, the Sex Pistols. She was deeply inspired by the shock-value of punk, “seeing if one could put a spoke in the system”. Westwood went on to open four shops in London, eventually expanding throughout the United Kingdom and the world, selling an increasingly varied range of merchandise, some of it linked to her many political causes such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, climate change and the civil rights group Liberty.

Vivienne was deeply interested in the punk fashion phenomenon of the 1970s, saying “I was messianic about punk, seeing if one could put a spoke in the system in some way”.The punk style included BDSM fashion, bondage gear, safety pins, razor blades, bicycle or lavatory chains on clothing and spiked dog collars for jewellery, as well as outrageous make-up and hair.

Essential design elements include the adoption of traditional elements of Scottish design such as tartan fabric. Among the more unusual elements of her style is the use of historical 17th- and 18th-century cloth-cutting principles. Use of these traditional elements make the overall effect of her designs more “shocking”.

Yohji yamamoto L’arte dell’antimoda, lo stilista che ha completamente reinventato la moda Andreas M.Jürgen

Uno degli stilisti intellettualmente più rigorosi fra quelli attivi nell’attuale panorama della moda, Yohji Yamamoto crea abiti che, nel loro intellettualismo talvolta al limite dell’ostico, sono sempre stupendi. Ancora una volta la rivista i-D esplora il mondo libero e anticonformista di Yohji, ripercorrendone la carriera ultra-trentennale, sviscerandone l’adorazione per le donne e la forma femminile e il travagliato processo di creazione dell’antimoda attraverso la moda, analizzando come il suo stile “utilitarista” e senza tempo si ponga all’avanguardia rimanendo al contempo classico.

Yamamoto debutta sulle passerelle di Parigi nel 1981. Così, mi è venuto in mente di disegnare soprabiti per donna. L’idea di un soprabito che proteggesse e celasse il corpo della donna mi stava molto a cuore. Volevo proteggere il corpo della donna da qualcosa, magari dagli sguardi maschili o dal gelido vento invernale”.

Le sue linee principali, Yohji Yamamoto e Y’s, riscuotono particolare successo a Tokyo. Le due linee sono disponibili anche nelle sue boutique monomarca di New York, Parigi e Anversa e ovunque presso i grandi magazzini di lusso. Yamamoto è conosciuto per lo spirito avanguardista delle sue creazioni spesso caratterizzate da elementi lontani dalle mode del momento.

When I started designing, I wanted to make men’s clothes for women.” More recently he has expounded: “When I started making clothes for my line Y’s in 1977, all I wanted was for women to wear men’s clothes. I jumped on the idea of designing coats for women. It meant something to me, the idea of a coat guarding and hiding a woman’s body. I wanted to protect the woman’s body from something, maybe from men’s eyes or a cold wind.”

His commercially successful main line, Yohji Yamamoto and Y’s, are especially popular in Tokyo. These two lines are also available at his flagship stores in New York, Paris, and Antwerp, and at high-end department stores worldwide. Yamamoto is known for an avant-garde spirit in his clothing, frequently creating designs far removed from current trends. His signature oversized silhouettes in black often feature drapery in varying textures.

Yamamoto’s work has also become familiar to consumers through his collaborations with other fashion brands, including Adidas (Y-3), Hermès, Mikimoto and Mandarina Duck.

Dopo quasi due decenni, lo stile “grunge” torna prepotentemente protagonista nell’abbigliamento, nel make-up e anche nell’hair-style… Lo scorso inverno, si sono tornati a vedere abiti a quadrettoni abbinati agli anfibi d’ordinanza, jeans strappati e scoloriti, capigliature incolte e arruffate stile “sveglia da 2 minuti” e trucco effetto sbavato. Non c’è assolutamente da stupirsi che alcuni di questi look risultino ancora del tutto attuali. Trascendendo il significato che lo contraddistinse negli anni ’90, oggi lo stile “grunge” si è evoluto in qualcosa di fortemente legato agli stilemi del glamour. Senza tradire la sua voglia di ribellione, il make-up di ispirazione grunge si esprime perlopiù attraverso ombreggiature effetto smokey in tinte neutre o scure, occhi bistrati e labbra rosso intenso. Quindi, che siate dirette a un concerto o ad un festival e vogliate dare sfogo al vostro spirito rock-chic o desideriate semplicemente un look grunge più soft da sfoggiare tutti i giorni...

Grunge fashion style was a huge clothing, hair and makeup influence this past winter... We’ve seen tartan dresses with clunky combat boots, ripped and stained jeans, greasy “just wake-up” hair and disheveled makeup looks. Thus, it’s only natural that some of these looks can be carried into the now.

The meaning of grunge fashion has evolved from what it was in the ’90s to something inextricably tied to notions of glamour.

Still with a rebellious edge, grunge-inspired makeup most often centeres around smokey hazes of neutral or dark colour, kohl lined eyes, and rich lips. Nella società dei giorni nostri esiste un costante anelito di individualità ed espressione del sé. Sono ormai molti quelli che, la loro espressione artistica decidono di indossarla. Oggi come mai, nella piena coscienza che la comunicazione elettronica non potrà mai rimpiazzare il contatto a quattr’occhi, il dialogo interpersonale è diventato qualcosa di molto complicato. Non sorprende, allora, che il tatuaggio stia anche diventando un mezzo di comunicazione. Il tatuaggio non richiede parole, solo uno sguardo. I nostri corpi sono diventati frigoriferi su cui come calamite affiggiamo citazioni, proverbi e memorie.

Body art, body building, graffiti cutanei, visioni ambulanti e accessori alla moda, inchiostrati sulla pelle. Ognuno di questi epiteti esprime alla perfezione la natura fisica del tatuaggio.

Ciò di cui, tuttavia, spesso non si parla è l’aspetto emotivo.

Oggi il tatuaggio gode di un’accettazione talmente ampia che si fatica ormai a definirlo semplicemente trendy.

Si tratta forse di una sorta di marchio sociale? I tatuaggi sono un perfetto spunto di conversazione. Raccontano una storia, permettono di sfoggiare la propria pelle, suscitano una risposta emotiva: una versione evoluta del marchio sociale. Le ragioni per cui ci si fa un tatuaggio sono le più svariate: desiderio di attenzione, espressione della personalità, sfogo artistico, ribellione, espressione visiva della narrativa interiore, richiamo a tradizioni spirituali o culturali, dipendenza...

Our current society craves individuality and self expression.

And now many people wear their artistic expression. We are having more trouble communicating with each other than ever before, as electronic communication will never replace face-to-face human contact. So, it’s not surprising that there’s a growing trend toward communication via body ink. We don’t have to talk, we just have to look. Our bodies have become the refrigerator magnets of quotes, sayings and reminders. Body art, body building, self-graffiti, walking billboards, fashionable ink accessories... Each of these expressions depict the physical nature of the tattoo. What’s often not discussed, however, is the emotional side of tattoos. Now tatoo they’re more accepted than ever, you could even call them trendy.

Is it social branding...? Tattoos are a conversation starter.

Either there’s a story attached or a skin-showing session or an emotional response derived from the sight of ink art. And the emotional response from the sight of tattoos leads to a modern-day version of social branding. People get tattoos for many reasons: for attention, self-expression, artistic freedom, rebellion, a visual display of a personal narrative, reminders of spiritual or cultural traditions, addiction...

In Passeggiate Notturne, Charles Dickens racconta la storia di quando, assalito dall’insonnia, decise di curarsi vagabondando nel cuore della notte per le vie di Londra allora popolate da senzatetto, passanti ubriachi, vizio e squallore.

In una cupa e gelida notte dell’Ottobre 1857, Charles Dickens esce dalla sua abitazione di Tavistock Square alle due del mattino per incamminarsi verso la sua casa di campagna di Gad’s Hill Place, nei pressi di Rochester, lontana una cinquantina di chilometri.

All’epoca Dickens aveva 45 anni e questa passeggiata segnò in qualche modo una crisi nella vita del grande scrittore. Quell’anno Dickens aveva conosciuto la diciottenne attrice ‘Nelly’ Turnan, che sarebbe diventata sua amante. Impossibilitato a lasciare la donna con cui era sposato da 20 anni, temendo lo scandalo Dickens fece accasare Nelly in una villa dove potesse farle visita al riparo da sguardi indiscreti.

Dickens conosceva le strade di Londra come le sue tasche, dalle più nobili delle residenze ai tuguri più sordidi; per arrivare a Gad’s Hill non impiegò che sette ore. La decisione di avventurarsi in queste passeggiate notturne era motivata dalla difficoltà a prender sonno di quel periodo. Nel racconto Passeggiate Notturne Dickens scrisse: “Alcuni anni or sono, una momentanea incapacità di prender sonno, imputabile ad un’idea angosciante, mi fece camminare per le strade tutta la notte, per diverse notti di seguito.

Il disturbo avrebbe potuto richiedere molto tempo per essere vinto, fosse stato languidamente patito a letto; invece, fu presto sconfitto dall’energico trattamento di alzarmi subito dopo essermi coricato, uscire e ritornare stanco all’alba. In quelle notti, sviluppai un’invidiabile competenza, sia pure amatoriale, di cosa significhi essere un vagabondo. Il mio scopo principale era quello di superare la notte”.

Charles Dickens describes in Night Walks his time as an insomniac, when he decided to cure himself by walking through London in the small hours, and discovered home-lessness, drunkenness, and vice on the streets.

On a dark, cold October night in 1857, Charles Dickens stepped out of his home in Tavistock Square at two o’clock in the morning, and walked to his country house, Gad’s Hill Place, near Rochester, some 30 miles away. He was 45-years-old and the walk marked something of a crisis in the great writer’s life. It was the year that Dickens met 18-year-old actress ‘Nelly’ Turnan, a girl who was to become his mistress. Unable to publicly leave his wife of 20 years, for fear of scandal, Dickens set Nelly up in a villa that he could secretly visit.

Dickens knew the streets of London like the back of his hand, from the highest courts to the lowest slums, and the walk to Gad’s Hill took him just seven hours. The reason why he set off on these long nocturnal rambles was his inability to get to sleep during this period. In his essay, Night Walks, he wrote: “Some years ago, a temporary inability to sleep, caused me to walk about the streets all night. I would get up directly after lying down, go out, and come home tired at sunrise. My principal object to get through the night.”

Grunge e punk sembrano destinati a tornare alla ribalta nelle collezioni Primavera–Estate e Autunno-Inverno; però, aspettate a ridurre la vostra camicia di flanella a brandelli; a quanto pare, infatti, questo revival, assumerà tratti decisamente più femminili e sofisticati. Il ritorno del grunge e del punk è parte integrante di quello spirito “rock ‘n’ roll” che gli addetti ai lavori si aspettano di scorgere nelle collezioni. “Guardando in giro si intuisce che nella gente si sta riaccendendo la passione per lo stile grunge,” ha dichiarato Ken Downing, fashion director dei grandi magazzini di lusso statunitensi Neiman Marcus. Emerso nei primi anni ’90, questo stile dall’aria sdrucita e trasandata, ebbe le sue icone nel compianto front-man dei Nirvana Kurt Cobain e nella moglie Courtney Love. I suoi toni cupi e irriverenti affondavano le proprie radici nello stile punk dei tardi anni ’70.

“Questa moderna reinterpretazione del punk e del grunge andrà ad ammorbidirne le sfaccettature più dure e grezze per proporne una rilettura più sofisticata e femminile; dopo tutto, infatti, la gente desidera semplicemente indossare abiti belli e alla moda”, ha dichiarato Tomoko Ogura, senior fashion director dei lussuosi grandi magazzini Barneys New York.

I buyer hanno indicato le collezioni dello stilista Americano Phillip Lim, dello stilista Belga Dries Van Noten e della griffe Francese Saint Laurent come quelle all’avanguardia di questo revival di look ispirati al punk, al grunge e al rock ‘n’ roll...

Grunge and punk are poised for come backs for Spring and Summer, Fall and Winter, but don’t rip up your flannel shirt just yet as the revival will be taking on a more feminine flair. The return of grunge and punk are part of a rock ‘n’ roll theme experts expect to see in collections. “There are early indications that people are having a love affair again with the idea of grunge,” said Ken Downing, fashion director of luxury department store Neiman Marcus. The disheveled thrift shop style was embodied in the 1990s by the late Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain and his wife, Courtney Love. Its dark, irreverent looks had their roots in punk styles of the late 1970s.

“The modern take on punk and grunge will be doing it in a way that will feel more beautiful and feminine as opposed to really tough and harsh, because at the end of the day people still want to wear beautiful clothes,” said Tomoko Ogura, senior fashion director at upscale department store Barneys New York.

Buyers pointed to collections by American designer Phillip Lim, Belgian designer Dries Van Noten and French label Saint Laurent as leading the resurgence of punk, grunge and rock ‘n’ roll-inspired styles...

Fin dal XIX secolo, gli ancestrali e idilliaci paesaggi dell’Engadina hanno esercitato un’irresistibile attrazione su una vasta schiera di artisti. Non stupisce, quindi, che l’amore per questa stupenda vallata sia rimasto immutato con il passare dei secoli e che tutt’oggi siano numerosi gli artisti e gli scrittori legati da un forte vincolo con l’Engadina.

La sua famosa luce e la sua aria frizzante, in special modo, sono state descritte ed immortalate da scrittori e pittori di grandissima fama. Nel celeberrimo Crespuscolo degli Idoli, Friedrich Nietzsche dipinge con le parole la straordinaria atmosfera dell’estate Engadinese: “...trasparente, ardente nei colori, racchiudeva in sé tutti i contrasti, tutti i gradi intermedi tra il ghiaccio e il sud”.

Lo scrittore Tedesco Hermann Hesse ne visse il paesaggio come “un paradiso visto solo nei sogni”, in grado di toccare nel profondo chiunque lo visiti. L’assenza di vita quotidiana, percettibile in tutta la vallata, ha un effetto rilassante e ricco di ispirazione al contempo. Nel suo Il Viandante, Hesse scrive: “Sentivo che questi monti e laghi, questo mondo di boschi e di fiori aveva più cose da dirmi di quante potessi recepirne a prima vista e farne parte integrante di me stesso che un giorno mi sarei ritirato in questi luoghi, che questa alta valle così austera, eppure ricca di forme, così severa eppure così armoniosa, mi interessava estremamente, che aveva qualcosa di prezioso da offrirmi o da chiedermi”.

Marcel Proust cattura lo spirito dell’Engadina con dovizia di particolari: “Raggiunta la vetta ci fermammo estasiati. L’immaginazione della nostra infanzia era divenuta realtà... Raggiungendo l’Engadina dal passo dell’Albula, dal passo del Flüela o dal passo del Giulia, l’aria mi balza addosso come una predatrice.

Respiro diversamente, parlo diversamente, guardo il mondo diversamente, sogno diversamente. Il cielo notturno trasuda stelle. A fianco delle montagne il ghiacciaio riluce. Le acque dell’Inn corrono veloci...”.

Since the 19th century the idyllic and archaic landscape of the Engadin has been well known as a “place of desire” for many artists. It is not surprising, that the love for this beautiful valley has never stopped and that also today many artists and writers are closely connected to the Engadin.

Especially the stunning light and the sparkling air have been a subject of poetical description or depiction by renowned writers and painters. In his famous book Götzendämmerung Friedrich Nietzsche describes the unique atmosphere of the Engadin Summer: “... this light, transparent, glowing with colours, encompassing every realm between ice and south.”

The German writer Hermann Hesse experienced the landscape as a vorgeträumtes Paradies (vision of paradise), able to touch every single visitor. The absence of everyday life which can be felt all over the Engadin has a calming yet inspiring effect. In his book Engadiner Erlebnisse he writes: “I felt, that these mountains and lakes, these trees and flowers will tell me much more, than I can perceive at first sight, so that I am forced to come back to this harmonious and austere mountain valley full of different shapes”.

Marcel Proust captures the spirit of his Engadin in great detail: “Reaching the peak, we stood still and were dazzled. The imagination of our childhood became real... Coming across Albula, Flüela or Julier to the Engadin, the air jumps at me like a predator. And I breathe differently, I speak differently, I look at things differently, I dream differently. The nights are dripping stars. The glacier at the hip of the mountains is gleaming. The Inn is rushing...”.
