5 Reasons to make the Visitor Center your first stop

Last year the Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center welcomed thousands of tourists, new residents and locals. Our staff fielded another thousand or more calls and email inquiries.

During each contact, we have the opportunity to show them the value of our area and direct them to our local events, businesses and treasures. There are so many great things to do and see in our area.

For decades, we’ve been the reason to make your first stop in the Kelso Longview area the Chamber and Visitor Center – we have everything you need to explore the area – maps, expert advice, brochures and guides. No one should venture out searching for Sasquatch without tips and information.

Some items are complimentary and others for purchase. We have more than 100 publications about attractions from here, Oregon, Canada, the coast, and even eastern Washington wine country – all are within a short drive.

Here are five more reasons to stop by the Chamber and Visitor Center:

1Advice

from the Locals

We live here. We play here. We shop here. We eat here. Heck, some of us grew up here. Nobody knows and loves the Kelso-Longview area more than we do. And no one has their fingers on the pulse of the cities than the Chamber. So use us to your advantage. We want you to enjoy the area as much as we do.

Cover Art

The cover photograph of Longview's Lake Sacajawea was taken by Anthony Krueger, who grew up in Rainier, Oregon. Krueger said his interest in photography began eight years ago and in the past five years has focused more on drone photography as a hobby. He snapped both the cover photo and the photo to the right using a drone.

2Service

with a Smile

Service is who we are and what we do. If we don’t have the answers, chances are we know someone who does and we can find them for you. Like the couple from Missouri who stopped in and wanted to go fishing spur of the moment. A few phone calls and we hooked them up, pun intended, with a fishing guide service that happened to have an opening the next day. They limited and booked another trip.

3Souvenirs for Lasting Memories

Looking for gifts or souvenirs – we’ve got you covered. We have T-shirts, water bottles, holiday tree ornaments, books for children and adults, coffee mugs, postcards and...well, so much more, come check it out!

Our inventory includes souvenirs from the area’s most popular events – Squirrel Fest, sQuatch Fest, Highland Games and attractions like the Shay Locomotive.

4Coupons and Discounts

As business insiders we not only suggest where to eat or what to do and see, sometimes we can save you money. We partner with many local businesses who offer discounts and coupons that we can provide.

WELCOME TO KELSO AND LONGVIEW!

ABOUT THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

We have one BIG reason to stop in and say hello...

5Harry!

Sure Mount St. Helens is a big attraction, but we’ve got something larger than life. The Pacific Northwest is known for Bigfoot sightings, especially down here in the Longview-Kelso area and our Squatch – Harry – has become a celebrity. Thousands of visitors, and locals, stop in and snap selfies with the 8-foot Sasquatch who calls the Visitor Center home. We love it! We meet the nicest people from around the world and offer them tips on the fabulous things to do and see in our area. If you are here during the summer or fall, we invite you to come back and visit us January 24-25, 2025 for sQuatch Fest, our annual festival for “believers” or anyone looking to have a lot of fun!

Kelso

Surveyor Peter Crawford named the city after his homeland in Kelso, Scotland. In honor, Kelso has an official tartan and hosts the Highlander Festival each year at Tam O’Shanter Park. Established in 1884, Kelso also serves as home for the Kelso Longview Visitor Center and Chamber of Commerce and the seat for Cowlitz County. A growing and thriving community of approximately 12,691, Kelso is centrally located – 48 miles north of Portland, Oregon, 125 miles south of Seattle and 80 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Its proximity to the Cowlitz, Coweeman and Columbia rivers also draw people to it for business, recreation and tourism. When Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980, Kelso received large amounts of volcanic ash through the air and from a massive mudflow transported by the Toutle and Cowlitz rivers. Many areas of the city, including the Three Rivers Golf Course, are built on volcanic ash dredged from the Cowlitz River.

A Park for all Seasons

The year-round recreational opportunities at Tam O’Shanter Park are endless with 38 acres of playgrounds, picnic areas, hiking paths and sports fields (baseball, softball and soccer). Located near Kelso High School, Tam O’Shanter has become a regional and national destination for tournament team sports, bringing thousands to compete at the state-of-the-art complex each year at Rister Stadium and Heerensperger Field, as well as basketball courts and horseshoe pits. The park’s trail system edges the river and is dotted with 30 picnic areas. The park recently received upgrades in parking, pathways, turf and restrooms. Tam O’Shanter is the host site for the annual Scottish Highlander Festival and Kelso Rotary Lights in the Park

History on Display

Described as a fact-filled repository of early life in southwest Washington, the Cowlitz County Historical Museum maintains an extensive collection of photos, artifacts, and books documenting the history of the county. Founded in 1949, it is the place to discover how the land and rivers of Cowlitz County have shaped the lives of people for hundreds of years. The museum also offers educational programs, guided group tours and a gift shop offering souvenirs and keepsakes to document your visit.

Longview

The Next 100 Years

Fresh off its centennial celebration, the City of Longview is a planned city conceived and built with private funds. R.A. Long, president of the Long-Bell Lumber Company, built the city along the Columbia River to accommodate his mill workers. The planning allowed the city to grow inward along organized lines with separate areas designated for business, industrial and residential areas. Today, with a population close to 37,782, Longview continues to grow in size and diversity. It is the largest city in Cowlitz County with a strong economic base, educational and cultural offerings and amazing recreational opportunities centered around its miles of trails, parks, open space and 13,000 trees. Longview has a vibrant downtown with a small-town atmosphere that offers a safe, comfortable and inviting gathering place with shopping, restaurants, galleries and beautiful streetscapes.

History Around Every Corner

Stroll through Longview’s history at R.A. Long Park and Civic Circle. Named for its city founder, the National Register Historic District was designed as a hub for business and travel, extending out with governmental and cultural anchors like the Monticello Hotel, Longview Public Library, and the Post Office. Each building showcasing its architecture and character from the 1920s. A few blocks in any direction and there’s more to see like the Monticello Convention Site where settlers petitioned Congress to separate from Oregon to form

Washington state. Wander the streets to view English Tudor, Dutch Colonial and Spanish Revival homes designed by world-renown architects or the grand Community Church Built in 1926, it resembles a Gothic revival castle right down to the gargoyles and stained glass. In addition to shopping and dining, downtown Longview streets provide an opportunity to eye some of the area’s top artistic work in the Longview Outdoor Gallery. The Shay Locomotive rests outside the Longview library. It hauled timber from 1924-1956. Once in disrepair, a volunteer restoration and fundraising effort has given it new life. Opened in 1930, the nationally-recognized historic Lewis and Clark Bridge spans the Columbia River connecting Longview and Rainier, Oregon. At the time of completion, its more than 8,000-foot distance made it the longest cantilever span in the United States.

Lake Sacajawea

Longview's Brilliant Gem

Developed in 1924, Longview’s Lake Sacajawea Park is a respite for locals and visitors. Those with an active lifestyle flock to walk, jog and bike on the 3.5 mile of trails which meander across landscaped bridges, through gardens of trees and flowers, and past spectacular fountains and playgrounds. Locals say it takes about an hour to walk around the lake. Fed by the Cowlitz River, the park, which sits near the center of the city along Kessler Boulevard, offers the Frank Willis Arboretum, the beautiful Japanese Garden and the educational Solar System Walk along with kayaking, fishing, canoeing and picnicking. There’s a reason it’s referred to as the crown jewel.

Music, Movies and More

The City of Longview traditionally hosts an evening concert series and family movie nights at the lake in July and August. The Longview Parks and Recreation concerts draw large crowds to the shores of Lake Sacajawea relaxing and enjoying amazing music. Both series take place at Martin’s Dock. For dates, times and details visit the city website.

The History

As a solution for back taxes in the 1930s, a proposed development of the lake property into residential lots resulted in public outcry to keep the property as a park. The city could not afford to purchase and assume ownership of the privately owned property, but some legal maneuvering and legislation corrected the problem and the Longview Company deeded the property to the city in 1938. Shortly after World War II began the lake fell into disrepair. In the 1950s, the council funded irrigation equipment and began pumping water from the Cowlitz River to alleviate many of the lake's issues and restore its beauty.

The Wild Side

Classified as a “warm waters fishery,” the lake offers year round fishing for large mouth bass, trout, and bluegill. The lake hosts an annual youth fishing derby. Water fowl are abundant. Visitors may eye ducks, geese, cormorants and

colorful wood ducks. Visitors may also spy otters, beavers, weasels, raccoons, opossums and deer on their walks.

Fun on the Fourth

Lake Sacajawea Park serves as host for the community’s family friendly Fourth of July celebration. A time-honored tradition started in the 1960s, the festival now draws more than 30,000 people to events culminating on the Fourth of July with a spectacular fireworks show. The lake itself provides the course for an Cardboard Boat Regatta.

Celebrate the Solstice

A relatively new event at Lake Sacajawea is the Solstice Lantern

Walk in December. In 2001, Friends of Galileo Astronomy Club gave the City of Longview a model Solar System Walk. It is a series of granite markers along the path on the west side of Lake Sacajawea. The markers show the relative sizes and distances of the planets over 1.64 miles, as if the solar system were scaled to the lake. During the Solstice Lantern Walk participants are encouraged to bring some light and cheer to the longest night of the year, and celebrate the return of longer days. The free event includes a lighted kayak parade and the world's longest fun run –3.7 billion miles!

A Squirrel World

Built in 1963 by the late Amos Peters, the Nutty Narrows Bridge is a local landmark and listed on the city’s historic register. The original 60-foot structure stretches across Olympia Way near Civic Circle. It was built to give squirrels a safe way to cross the busy road. It is now one of nine in the city and the focal point for Squirrel Fest

ŒH&N Fremont Replica

This all-aluminum bridge was constructed by H&N Sheet Metal in Kelso. This bridge is an exact to scale replica of Portland’s Fremont Bridge and is located on Kessler Boulevard at the end of Lake Sacajawea.

John R. Dick

Inspired by the famous Leonard Zakim bridge. Built in 2012, and located at 2900 Nichols Boulevard.

‘OBEC "Woodie"

Built in 2014, located at Louisiana and 23rd Avenue, this bridge has a redwood frame and metal roofing and

was made to look like a scale model of a bridge fit for people.

’Nutty Narrows

Currently resides on Olympia Way, between 18th Avenue and Maple Street.

“Cowlitz PUD

What is the No. 1 cause of power outages in Cowlitz County? Squirrels. Cowlitz County Public Utility District (PUD) built a span across Kessler Boulevard, near 20th Avenue, to Lake Sacajawea. The aluminum bridge was designed by a

PUD engineer to create an alternative pathway for squirrels who like to use the electrical lines for crossing.

”Wako Japan

The latest squirrel bridge was erected over Kessler Boulevard near the Japanese Garden not far from Maple Street. The 16foot long structure is based on a bridge in Longview’s sister city, Wako, Japan. It was created by Lower Columbia College welding students, under the direction of shop teacher Natasha Allen.

Parks

Baseball, Softball and So Much More

Kelso's Tam O'Shanter Park opened in 1958 and recently received a ton of upgrades, making the 38-acres of outdoor heaven more enjoyable. The Heerensperger Girl’s Softball Complex at the park is busy all summer long. Businessman and Kelso native David Heerensperger helped build the park in memory of his mother. Also located at Tam O’Shanter Park is Rister Stadium. The 500-seat stadium is named after Stan Rister, a passionate volunteer with Cowlitz Little League and Kelso Babe Ruth. In addition to Tam O’Shanter and Lake Sacajawea, the parks in and around Kelso and Longview offer something for everyone.

Wet and Wonderful

Kelso’s new and soon-to-be improved Catlin Rotary Spray Park is scheduled to open in August. It offers an alternative to cooling off in the area’s rivers or lakes, especially for little ones. It is located on the corner of Cowlitz Way and Main Street and includes benches, picnic tables and restrooms. It’s open Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. Prefer a pool? There’s the Longview YMCA of Southwest Washington.

River Retreat

Located along the river, Gerhart Gardens Park is easy on the mind. Soak in the beautiful scenery by boat, there’s a convenient launch, walk along the shore, or set up a picnic under a shady tree. Cast a line, either by land or water, both are acceptable. The 14 acres also include basketball courts, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts and a playground. And don’t forget Rover, let the pooch stretch his legs at the fenced, off-leash Gerhart Dog Park

Surf and Sand

West of Longview is a mile of sandy beach along the Columbia River and Willow Grove Park. Operated by the Port of Longview, this is a popular location year round to enjoy a number of outdoor activities. The Port of Kalama offers riverfront recreational facilities, including walking and biking paths, playgrounds, covered picnic shelters and the tallest totem pole in the Pacific Northwest. The Port operates a marina, and its public beaches are a southwest Washington destination for swimming, windsurfing, fishing and relaxing.

Fan Favorites

GolfPass listed Mint Valley Golf Course and Three Rivers Golf Course among its Top 20 Golf Courses in Washington – Golfers' Choice 2024. The course is known to provide a challenge for beginners and professionals. The par-71 championship Mint Valley Golf Course is one of the finest public golf courses in the state. The well-bunkered greens, water hazards, fast greens and tall trees test every skill level. The member-owned Longview Country Club offers plenty of playability for golfers of all skill

levels. Known as an “old school” course with its tree-lined fairways, small, fast sloping greens, and demanding par 3s, it serves up plenty of challenges.

Year-round there’s something to get out and do in the area –hiking, biking, fishing, camping, off-roading. Rent a kayak and paddle across a serene lake. We’ve heard “the wildlife is just crazy” at Silver Lake and the Coal Creek Slough. Climb Mount St. Helens. We’re just getting started.

Go Ape over Lava Tubes

Formed about 2,000 years ago from a volcanic eruption, Ape Cave is the longest known lava tube in the continental United States. Sturdy shoes are recommended and bring a jacket and carry a flashlight. Opt for either the easier route or head uphill for the longer adventure, a mile-plus climb over large boulders. Information, lantern rentals and guided tours are available at the Ape Cave headquarters from early July through Labor Day. To register online for tickets go to recreation.gov.

Learn About Transportation

Port of Kalama’s Transportation Interpretive Center exhibits track Kalama’s first inhabitants, the Cowlitz Tribe, and the settlers that followed. Displays illustrate how Kalama’s particular landscape gave birth to a booming transportation system impacting the area both culturally and economically — ultimately transforming the area into its position today as an internationally-connected community. The center also treats visitors to artful display models, replicas, and is the home of the 1913 Spokane Portland and Seattle (SP&S 539) steam locomotive, which worked the rail lines through Kalama in its operating years.

Breathtaking vistas and miles of trails have been created to explore Mount St. Helens. During the summer Forest Service interpreters lead a range of activities like short walks and amphitheater presentations. Adventurers can climb–4,500 feet of elevation in five miles–or explore from the air with a helicopter tour. In the winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobile trails are available. In many cases only enthusiasm is necessary, in others a permit is required.

Mount St. Helens Visitor Center

Mount St. Helens Visitor Center is a world-class facility located on the western shore of Silver Lake. With its high ceilings and massive windows, the outdoors becomes a part of the architecture. Your senses will come alive as you enjoy the interactive exhibits, a step-in model of the volcano and theater programs. Outside, a milelong trail takes you into marshy plains surrounding Silver Lake where you can see waterfowl and a picture-perfect view of the mountain. Make sure to take in one of the comprehensive presentations on the historical and cultural significance of the area. View exhibits showing the chronology of events leading up to the eruption and see the working seismograph.

Get Outdoors

Go Fish

In the 1950s, the area became known as the Smelt Capital of the World for its heavy runs. The smelt still run, but the Cowlitz, Lewis, Toutle and Kalama rivers are also among the most revered steelhead streams in the Northwest. The Columbia River offers reliable salmon and sturgeon runs. Try your luck with kokanee at Yale Reservoir, tiger muskies and Coho at Merwin Reservoir, and rainbow trout at Swift Reservoir Silver Lake delivers excellent fishing for large mouth bass and is also a great spot to go after perch, bluegill and crappie. Lake Sacajawea, located in the middle of the City of Longview, has trout. Check the Fishing in Washington regulations pamphlet for limits and size requirements. Don’t forget a fishing license and a life vest.

Need Guidance?

Looking for tips for the best local fishing holes? Want a memorable and fun experience for the kids? Hoping to snag a trophy winter steelhead? Sounds like you might be in the market for a local fishing guide. There are plenty in the area and Bob’s Sporting Goods is a good place to start. The staff there has put together a list of guides and has the equipment and licenses you’ll need.

Mountain Biking

Longview’s Cloney Park includes a BMX trail. If you’re looking to crank it up a notch, then head to the hills, south side of Mount St. Helens to be specific, for some of the Northwest’s premier mountain biking treks. Our sources point to Siouxon Creek, Lewis River, South Coldwater and Falls Creek. The Ape Canyon ride, which begins on the south side of Mount St. Helens, we understand is one of the Northwest’s best mountain biking rides.

For those who like their two-wheels to have some horsepower don’t worry, the area offers a number of options. Rev up the excitement with a visit to any of the raceways in our neighboring communities like Castle Rock and Woodland.

Take a Hike

Lake Sacajawea and many of the other parks in the LongviewKelso area are great for stretching your legs and raising your heart rate, but for those who are looking to step it up – hit the trail. The Washington Trails Association has outlined a number of hikes in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest that provide views of Mount St. Helens.

There are also plenty of local trails. Here’s a list of popular local trails to get you started:

Seaquest State Park

East and West Riverfront Trails

Cook Ferry

Riverside Park

Willow Grove

Pacific Way Trail

Cowlitz Dike Trail

Canoe Kayak?

Bad puns aside, with its rivers and lakes the Kelso-Longview area is a great place to grab a kayak or canoe and find a peaceful place to paddle. Need help or advice on equipment, locations or lessons, try the Cowlitz River Kayaker’s https://cowlitzkayak.godaddysites.com/places-to-paddle

The historic Columbia Theatre in Longview opened as a vaudeville venue and movie house in 1925. After years of decline, the theater escaped the wrecking ball in 1980 when demolition equipment heading toward the theater was diverted to help with cleanup following the Mount St. Helens eruption. In the interim, a group of visionaries saved and restored the historic building. Today, the 1,000-seat theater hosts musicals, concerts, comedy and theatre. Its counterpart is the Kelso Theater Pub/Backstage Cafe. The historic theater in downtown Kelso hosts a variety of movies, music, art and public events. The Rose Center for the Arts at Lower Columbia College offers a full program of events, and features a 500-seat auditorium considered the best hall for music performance in southwest Washington. The center hosts an art gallery, as well as a multitude of college and community musical and theatrical performances and lectures.

Music and Theater

There’s something for every music lover in Longview and Kelso. The City of Longview hosts its free evening Summer Concert Series at Martin’s Dock, Lake Sacajawea Park. There’s also the Music on the Mountain series and Arts of the Mountain at Mount St. Helens, as well as regular performances from the Columbia River Symphony and SW Washington Symphony. The Cowlitz Tribe offers entertainment at the ilani Casino and Hotel down the highway near Ridgefield. The venue hosts regional entertainers as well as big names. The Cowlitz County Fair is another opportunity to see favorite performers live. Local theater troupe Stageworks Northwest performs works from great artists like Shakespeare, Gilbert and Sullivan and Neil Simon year-long on their Longview stage, and they are not alone.

Galleries, Movies and More

The Broadway Gallery and more are located in the heart of downtown Longview and waiting for viewers. If the cinema is more your thing, the Kelso Theater Pub and Regal Cinemas Three Rivers Mall 12 – RPX offer new releases–one in a oldtime theater turned cinema and the other in a modern stateof-the-art facility.

Building Murals

Founded by civic-minded women of different cultural and professional backgrounds with a desire to see art flourish, The Broad Strokes Project (TBSP) was established in 2021 to grow the cultural identity in the Longview community

through art. While the community struggled during the pandemic, there was also a spirit of cooperation and excitement for downtown Longview among small business owners. It was in this climate the founders believed the time was right to attract civic activity and business patronage through public art. TBSP was inspired by and founded in part on The Longview Outdoor Gallery model after the announcement that organization intended dissolution in 2023. www.thebroadstreetproject.org

Avenue of Art

Although disbanded in 2023, the Longview Outdoor Gallery's (LOG) legacy continues in the heart of downtown along Commerce Avenue. For years LOG acquired 28 outdoor sculptures for the City of Longview’s permanent art collection. A podcast audio tour with information about each piece is available on Apple and Spotify.

Live Music Nearby

Just steps away from McMenamins’ Kalama Harbor Lodge lies the Port’s Westin Amphitheater, an outdoor entertainment venue with stunning views of the Columbia River. The amphitheater, constructed in 2019, hosts weekly concerts (Wednesdays and Thursdays) June-August. Check out the calendar for upcoming events on the McMenamins’ website.
