Gardening Tips from Woodside Lots of Woodside customers have been asking for houseplants this year, and so in response, we are now stocking a range of fairly easy houseplants including Streptocarpus (Cape Primrose). Streptocarpus fall into two distinct groups: those with stems, the Streptocarpellas, and the more commonly known types with a rosette of leaves. It is from these rosette types that the modern hybrids have been bred. These rosette species inhabit wooded ravines and valleys of the Drakensburg mountains of Southern Africa, and were introduced into the UK in 1826. This species variety has bluish flowers, but soon many other species followed and many crosses were made resulting in the hybrids available today.

Knowing their geographical distribution helps in understanding how to look after them.

Remember, they come from the wooded areas in mountains, so they do not want full sunshine, but they do want a bright position. Too much sun burns the leaves and fades the flowers. Keep them in a shaded greenhouse or indoors in an East or West window, where they can avoid the hottest, most direct sunlight.

Water regularly from either above or below, but only when the plant requires it. It is important not to overwater Streptocarpus, so wait until the compost feels dry to the touch.

Overwatering, in particular regular overwatering, will cause harm to the root system.

Confusingly, the first symptom of overwatering is exactly the same as underwatering i.e., the plant will wilt. So do make sure the compost is actually dry in-between watering.

Always cut off dead flowers. Excessive or incorrect feed and poor light make the plants produce very large leaves and few flowers. It is quite natural as plants age for the old leaves to die back, and the ends should be trimmed off, especially in winter. In winter, water less often, do not feed and keep the plants in a place free from frost. In March or April gradually start watering more often and commence feeding. Plants should be potted into a slightly larger pot each spring. Do not over-pot as you will get more flower by keeping on the pot-bound side.

Streptocarpus are easily grown plants which are remarkably free from pests and diseases.

Greenfly occasionally attack plants and can be spotted from their white discarded skins on the flower stalks and leaf bases. A spray with a proprietary insecticide either as an aerosol or mixed with water will soon cure the problem, and biological controls are also available.

With the right care, Streptocarpus should flower right through from May to about September, and are most rewarding to grow, and fairly addictive! There is a good choice of colours and petal markings – in particular, the variety Polka Dot is very attractive with its spotted petals. So if you’ve had trouble growing houseplants before – Streptocarpus might just be the thing to give you the confidence to start again.

Sprouston Primary School We were so happy to be back at school on the 11th August. There were lots of smiles and laughter as we all got to see our friends and meet our new P1. The children have been fantastic learning the new routines that keep us safe and have settled in really quickly. They have been working really hard and enjoying getting back into their learning at school. We try to do as much as we can outdoors and so far have been outside for a number of activities.

For the moment all PE must be outdoors, which is a challenge with our weather! But our children aren’t afraid of a bit of rain and just donned their raincoats and got on with the games and skills Miss Fairbairn had planned for them. The P6 and 7’s now have i pads and have been exploring how they can be used to support their learning in class.

This year has definitely been slightly different to our usual back to school first week but we are all happy to be back and loving being back in the classroom.

Life after Lockdown It has been strange adapting to the new normal with one obvious sign of the difference being the number of people who are now wearing masks not only in the shops, where they are required, but also out and about in the town. While there is a debate in some quarters over whether or not this is an effective measure it is certainly a message that here in the Borders we take this situation seriously and unlike some other areas we certainly don’t want to do anything that would risk another lockdown. Thankfully, as I write this, there have been very few positive tests in the Borders for weeks and no related deaths but as we all know this can’t be taken for granted.

Here at Hastings Property Shop we are operating as best we can with social distancing and following industry guidelines while the phones are bouncing off the hook due to the unprecedented level of calls. I can honestly say demand for properties in the Borders has never been higher with local buyers competing with buyers from Edinburgh and from England relocating here and actively pursuing properties across the price range.

As a result prices achieved have been on the up with offers ranging from around 5% to a staggering 20% or more over the surveyor’s Home Report valuation.

With high levels of demand and buyers keen to view we are finding our virtual tours are proving popular with buyers able to get a good idea of what the property and area are like – particularly where the location is suitable for drone videography to be incorporated in the virtual viewing video. Likewise for sellers, particularly for the most popular properties with multiple viewing requests, it helps to qualify buyers and restrict viewings to those who are serious – an essential measure with the issue of lock down once again hitting the headlines.

KELSO HERITAGE SOCIETY

Pushing planes off the deck of HMS Illustrious, in September 1945 75th anniversary marking the end of WW2 September 15th is designated as Battle of Britain Day. This year, marks the 80th anniversary of what Winston Churchill called ‘our finest hour’. Much of that battle was fought over the skies of Southern England. From 1942, Borders airmen and women, based at the Berwickshire airfields of RAF Charterhall and RAF Winfield made a huge contribution to the war in the skies, over the north of England and Southern Scotland.

The war in Europe ended in May 1945. The war in the Far East lasted a further 3 months, ending in August 1945. It is often referred to as the forgotten war. Several Kelso men fought on during that time, with at least two of them on Royal Navy Aircraft Carriers, with the British Pacific Fleet. One of these men was my own father Robin Robeson who served on HMS Illustrious. Another is Walter Ingles ….who served on HMS Indomitable. Walter remembers meeting my father on Board HMS Pioneer, off the Australian Coast in September 1945. How relieved both were, that the war was finally over. How grateful we are, to the many men like Walter, who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today.

Throughout this session we will continue to embed our vision and values: In our selves In our School In our Community

It was a pleasure and a privilege to welcome all our young people and staff back to Kelso High School on Tuesday 11th August. We have been very impressed with all of our young people on their return to school in these very different times. They have demonstrated our values of respect and excellence through engaging with all of our changes to keep everyone safe in a positive and caring way – Thank You! In particular we have been impressed with the care our young people have been taking to sanitise their hands, wiping down their work area and following our one-way system, all of which helps to ensure a safe environment for all.

We have continued to adapt and reform procedures throughout the first few weeks about what works. We have had timetable changes to help minimise movement and set up new procedures to follow when using the canteen along with extra markers (yellow tape and arrows) in the school to ensure social distancing where possible. We will continue to make changes when required do to ensure we are working together to keep everyone safe.

15 Head Team 2020/21 Introductions My name is Liberty and I am a member of Head Team at KHS, along with Susie, Jonny and Luke. We were elected in July and are going to have our first meeting this week at school.

Something which I think is really important about our team this year is that we are all diverse: I am involved in Climate Change activism; Susie has played hockey for years and is also very academic; Jonny excels at Maths and Science and Luke is really sporty. Consequently we have a range of ambitions for our Head Team to achieve. Top of the list being that we support our community by fundraising for local charities, and also encourage the students and staff at KHS to become more environmentally friendly. We have plans to bring back the house point system to help create a sense of unity across year groups despite the physical distance that must be between us. We also hope to ensure we can still have as just as much fun this year as any other S6, so have our fingers crossed that events like Prom can still happen.

Warm welcome to our new S1 Last week we welcomed our new S1 students to Kelso High School following many months away from the classroom. Normally staff would have visited the pupils many times when they were still in Primary 7 to get to know them and share information with primary staff. The students themselves would have visited us on 3 induction days before the summer break to familiarise themselves with the school, staff and their new timetables. However, due to Covid-19 restrictions most of this process took place online. Staff provided short video messages giving information on their subject and information was shared with pupils and parents in the new P7 area on the KHS website. We must also thank a group of S6 students who supported the transition as Super Buddies. Students all linked up with their new Pastoral Teachers using Microsoft Teams and Primary and Secondary staff worked closely using a series of online platforms to ensure the Transition was as smooth as possible.

What is remarkable, despite all the enforced changes, is just how well the class of 2020-21 have coped. They all arrived smartly dressed in their uniforms, brand new ipads at the ready, prepared for the day ahead and sped off to meet their register teachers. Almost no-one got lost and within a few hours the students looked like they had been in the building for months. They have taken all the new daily routines in their stride and staff are very much enjoying finally meeting and getting to know their S1 classes.

The school would like to thank all those involved (staff and parents) for all their hard work in what was a very unfamiliar transition process which ensured each student felt confident, supported and ready for their first day at Kelso High.

News from Ednam Primary School After yet another year where we didn’t finish the school session in our lovely building we are all so happy to be back at school.

The children have done amazingly well getting back into the swing of school life and have worked hard to learn all the new routines in place to help to ensure we are safe at school.

It was so nice to see all the children back on the 11th excited to be seeing their friends again, meeting new friends and also getting to know their new teachers for those who have gone into P1 and P4 and P5.

They have been working well in class and have enjoyed a mixture of indoor and outdoor learning. The P6 and 7’s are enjoying the fact they now have i pads to support them with their learning and have begun to think about how these can be useful in lessons.

For the moment we are just glad to be back and looking forward to whatever the year has ahead.

Well, what a few months it has been! The school, like the wider community, continues to go through a time of great challenge, uncertainty and worry. We are so impressed by the resilience, positivity and mutual support throughout the school. We pay tribute to the hard work and efforts of school and nursery staff at all levels, to keep in touch with families during lockdown, to provide engaging remote learning opportunities, staff the childcare hub and keep the warm, caring ethos of Broomlands alive and well.

We are delighted to have been able to return to school, with our top priority being the health and wellbeing of our children, families and staff. As a school we are taking things gently at the start of term, giving the children time to settle in, to support them to feel comfortable and to help them become knowledgeable about how school looks and feels with the ‘new normal’. Teaching of physical, social and emotional health and wellbeing is a priority under our recovery curriculum, as will the key areas of literacy and numeracy. We also know that learning in the outdoors and through the expressive arts are a crucial part of our first weeks back together.

There are a wide-range of measures in place to ensure children are kept safe and well at Broomlands.

Regular hand-washing and teaching of good hygiene.

Enhanced cleaning of the school.

Children kept within class groupings.

Zoning in our playground and staggered breaks.

New lining up procedures and separate entrance/exits for classes.

Staff use of PPE equipment.

It has been such a positive start back, with staff welcoming children on school gate and directing them to their lines for their separate entrances. Parent feedback on the start had been really positive: “Hello. A big thank you from my children. They really enjoyed school and felt safe!”

“Thank you so much for making it as easy as possible dropping T off for his first day in P1! He was so excited”.

Thank you for making this start to P1 easy and almost normal. You guys have done amazing to make this happen”.

“I just wanted to drop the school an email to say that the new morning “drop off” at the playground gates procedure albeit brought in for Covid-19, is a great success”.

There will be a focus on outdoor learning, which is recognised as a very safe space in which to work with our children. This brings opportunities for experiential learning and a chance to make some great memories in the midst of the learning.

Staff are very much enjoying getting to know their new classes, settling them in and building those allimportant relationships that help us get the very best out of the children. We have all missed the fun, laughter and energy that working with children brings. We look forward to a really positive year ahead.

KELSO ANGLING ASSOCIATION Some of my readers will have noticed that the August entry was a bit strange.

This was because the file I sent in was the August 2019 entry instead of the August 2020 entry. Please accept my apologies for this error.

The Salmon season continues with some welcome sport this year. The higher river levels in the last two months have brought our salmon members in force to the river. Salmon & Sea Trout have been running the river with larger numbers than usual of sea trout being caught.

Bumper smolt run from the Gala Water.

In addition to being used to catch fish for tagging, the Gala smolt trap has also been run throughout April and May to catch samples of salmon and sea trout smolts leaving the Gala Water. A record 15,960 salmon smolts and 2,277 sea trout were caught in the trap, which represents only part of the total run that leaves the Gala Water. This shows that tributaries like the Gala Water continue to be extremely productive for juvenile salmon.

Floy Tagging Floy tagging resumed with the reopening of the river in May in order to look at recapture rates of fish throughout the catchment. By early July there had been 190 Salmon and 10 Sea Trout tagged by boatman from Tweedhill to Gledswood. Although the numbers are lower than what would have been tagged were it not for COVID-19, so far there have been 10 confirmed recaptures – nine Salmon and one Sea Trout. The distance that the recaptured fish had travelled since being caught for the first time appears to have varied greatly. One Sea Trout tagged at Lower Birgham on the 5th March was recaptured on the 1st July at Upper Mertoun, while one Salmon caught in early March at Carham was caught on the 21st May only 100 yards further upstream.

The furthest upstream recapture was a Salmon at Holylee in June.

Unfortunately the tag number was not recorded so where it was tagged remains uncertain, but the colour of the fish would suggest that it would have been tagged in the early Spring.

The returns so far for the Brown Trout season are variable, results varying by the weather. A significant number of 8/9” have been reported which augurs well for next season.

Despite poor fishing conditions when the season opened on 29th May (low flows and bright sunshine) some very good catches were reported up and down the Tweed System. By all accounts the good catches appear to have continued over the days that followed. Whilst a few very large Brown trout (up to 6lb) have been reported, the majority of the Brown trout being caught are in the ¾lb to 1lb size range (12” to 14”).

The second outing of the year was a return to Sweethope Lough on 23rd Aug. I shall report on the outcome next month.

Members are reminded that we have a final outing to Lake of Menteith on Saturday 31st October. Details will be placed in Orvis on Saturday 17th October.

The challenges set by Coronavirus, has meant that we have taken the difficult decision to postpone the speakers programme for the coming year (September 2020-May 2021).

We will review the situation in January 2021 and provided we can find a venue, which will allow us to operate in a safe environment, we will endeavour to arrange a programme of speakers for the spring.

We are keen to explore the possibility of hosting online lectures and webinars. We will keep you posted on how that might work in due course. SOAP BOX AGAIN. This dashed weather, first we cook then we rust, thank goodness we have an incredibly versatile wardrobe. Our poor dogs do not they rely on us to keep them either warm or cool, if your dog is suffering with this muggy weather and their coat is making it much worse, then do consider having it layered in or stripped off, it will grow again.

Ok I hear you ask why am I on my soap box now? Anal glands, need I say more? Well probably. It all began when I had a very in depth discussion on this topic with a new client a couple of weeks ago. As she dropped Fido in for grooming she asked “would I DO his anal glands”…...”DO” I queried “what do you mean DO?” ”Empty them” was the response back. So I asked if he had been having problems she replied NO but her other groomer always saw to this task.

Now anal glands are tiny ducts set just inside the anus of your dog and are there for a Purpose. Under normal circumstances they are no trouble, they empty by themselves when Fido has a poo. This is meant to happen, it is part of their marking process. What can happen to create problems for the anal gland? Well, there are a few things that can happen with the most common being when they are only producing very soft stools. This means there is no pressure put on the glands to empty them naturally.

These glands are very delicate and not always placed where they should be, regular unnecessary emptying can and will often result in permanent problems for your dog’s bottom. If they are incorrectly emptied they can set up an infection that is exceedingly difficult to control.

So the answer to the clients question was “no I do not empty anal glands”. Yes I did my training as an animal nurse, yes I could empty them but I strongly suggest if you need this doing please take a trip to the vets, there may be a reason that your dogs glands are not emptying and they will find the answer. A healthy dog and digestive system do not need their anal glands emptied every time you go to the groomers.

That’s me off my soap box; please remember this is a personal opinion, MINE, you don’t have to agree with it, but it is given with the best of your dogs interests at heart. Well, I’m off to cut the grass before it rains, bye for now.

A Very Welcome Return!

School life during COVID was an interesting experience for all of us- finding new ways to deliver what teachers and nursery staff have been doing for years. The use of technology has been our saving grace, finding ways to engage with each other from the safety of our homes. However this all changed again in August in line with the Government advice which saw staff and pupils return to school. I am sure I speak on behalf of all the staff when I say how happy we were to see our young people back with us! I definitely prefer running schools in person and hearing the sound of children laughing and playing than running it electronically.

Whilst there are lots of changes to how we run, the safety of our pupils comes first and hopefully by all working together we can keep each other safe.

Thank you to our communities for their continued help and support, we look forward to the point we are able to welcome you back into school again properly.

New Year- New Ideas Across our schools the new school year is the perfect time to put some new ideas into practice. We have introduced Pupil of the Day in all our classes. This is a great way to help boost self-esteem and confidence in our young people. We are also changing the way we recognise achievements with our new Star Award certificates (a few have already made their way home). Outdoor learning has always been something we pride ourselves on- this term we are aiming to look at this even more and consider ways our pupils can help improve the outdoor environment of our playground.

Staff will begin to explore some new resources in the coming weeks. Emotion Works is a resource centred on mental and emotional wellbeing of our pupils. We are also exploring digital resources for supporting mental maths across the school but is another great way to use ours iPads in Primary 6 and 7 in particular.

www.drinkaware.co.uk It’s easy to get drawn in to talking about semi-expensive bo�les of whisky, mainly because we all buy in to a clever marke�ng myth that says - it has to be single malt to be any good. I am going to de-bunk that myth today (hopefully) so, today we are going to look at 4 easily accessible blends that retail around £20 or under.

Number 1 Bells Original – once owned by Arthur Bell this world leading best seller is now part of the mighty Diagio group and is dis�lled in Glasgow. the ini�al nose gives you fresh herbs and is definitely floral. It’s quite gentle, gone is the harsh, brash burn of the old �me 8�O, this is subtle. The taste on the palate is fairly woody at first and a then a bit of spice comes through followed by a nu�y/oily taste that is quite nice and last of all, a bit of honey - all in all, it’s smooth. The finish is short but there’s a bit of sweet honey that is really nice. I saw this on sale for £15 last month, reduced from £18.

Number 2 Ballan�ne’s – �ou have to love that square shaped bo�le and the packaging is so eye-catching.

Dis�lled by �ernod-Ricard in Dumbarton they blend about 50 different whiskies to get the finished product. The nose gives you a big hit of toffee and a wisp of wood smoke. The palate is rich and sugary sweet with tons of creamy caramel and there’s some peat smoke there too, it’s quite lovely. The finish is really surprising too, it’s all about so� and sweet creamy fudge. I’m not surprised this scored a whopping 96/100 and was named the best blend in the whisky bible. I bought a bo�le from the Supermarket earlier in the year for £20. That’s definitely dram good value.

Number 3 Whyte & Mackay – founded in Glasgow in the 1840’s their parent company owns major brands like Dalmore, Isle of Jura and they are the people behind my Grannies favourite �pple Glayva. There are over 40 whisky blends in the end product, the nose is sweet dark sugars, a bit like a rum but not so punchy. The taste is smooth, there’s honey and dark chocolate but I would recommend adding a bit of water and let tastes expand in to so� watermelon, citrus and toffee. The finish is short, there’s no smoke or sweetness, it’s just a subtle floral evapora�on.

I enjoyed a double tot in a local pub (purely in the interest of this report) but I wouldn’t object to paying the £16 for a bo�le I saw it for at the Supermarket – don’t forget to add that helping splash of water though.

Number 4 Hankey Bannister Original (Red Label) Okay, this isn’t usually on the shelves of the local supermarket but you can occasionally find it. I first came across this blend at Balblair dis�llery just north of Tain. They are owned by the same company. I was looking for a bo�le of whisky for my father in law. He’s a fussy old lad; he doesn’t like peated flavours, he doesn’t like smoky flavours and to top it all, he always drinks his whisky with ginger ale or God forbid, sloshed in to some tea or coffee.

I know… but he’s a lovely man, spent his na�onal service pulling people out of the water for air sea rescue and he has a beau�ful daughter (married to me) but by heck he has no taste in whisky. Subsequently I never buy him malt.

I saw the HB on sale for £14 and got him a bo�le. When we got home, he hummed and ahhed – he’d never heard of HB so we agreed to swap it for a bo�le of Teachers I had won in a raffle at Kelso Bowling Club… he was chuffed with the deal but a�er tas�ng the HB I knew I had something quite special on my hands.

The nose is all peppery spices, cinnamon, clove and brown sugar. The palate is treacle toffee but it’s creamy too, like expensive fudge. The finish is huge and lingering with sugary toffee, creamy caramel and a hint of wintery spices. I always have a bo�le open for visitors and I never reveal what it is un�l they have tried it. �veryone gets it mistaken for an expensive single malt - you will have to play along now you know the truth. I think I paid £19 for the last bo�le and I had a quick look on line and it’s around the same price now, you can mail order it, if you can’t find it locally.

That’s me for now folks, keep safe and I’ll see you again in October and we will have another warming dram or two as the nights draw in.

The Provost Report Hello everyone and I hope you are all well. There was very li�le to report last month with there being no mee�ngs and no events. However, I did en�oy some �me off and managed to get away to visit family in Dunfermline and Brora for a few days. We’ve also started planning for our wedding next year which is interes�ng to say the least while this is all going on and there’s no certainty we will even get the wedding we want if restric�ons are s�ll in place. Using local suppliers and local services makes things so much easier though and gives peace of mind.

I had hoped to host a public Community Council mee�ng this month but a�er reading Sco�sh Government guidance and speaking with Sco�sh Borders Council that isn’t going to be possible and it’s looking likely they may not happen again this year and definitely not before the end of October.

Kelso Resilience Group wrapped up our voluntary services at the end of July as we came out of lockdown. I would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the past few months. We now remain on standby in case of a second wave in the Sco�sh Borders but we hope this doesn’t happen and we all have a part to play in that. FACTS – Face coverings; Avoid crowded places; Clean your hand regularly; Two metre distance; Self isolate and book a test if you have symptoms.

Like many of you I get very upset when I see the long grass and weeds overgrowing around the town. I can’t �uite understand why SBC are being so restric�ve with their staff when it is evident they too want to �dy up the town. This will be an agenda item at our next mee�ng. Kelso in Bloom con�nue to maintain the beds they have adopted but we also made the decision to look a�er the Tait Hall beds un�l SBC are in a posi�on to maintain them themselves. As you can imagine we felt this was the right thing to do so the residents of Grove House didn’t have to look out onto an overgrown mess. As always if people would like to volunteer with Kelso in Bloom please do get it touch. Can I also politely ask owners and tenants par�cularly in the town centre to �ust take a few minutes to pull the weeds from the pavement and gu�er in front of their proper�es, it will make a massive difference. Many I know grudge doing this as they believe someone else should be doing it but let’s take a bit of pride in our town and �dy it up.

Other items that will appear on our September agenda are Live Borders reopening plan, boundary issues at Springwood and schools returning. On that last issue I have been pleased to hear the return in Kelso has gone well. If anyone has issues they would like to raise please contact us.

This month sees the official opening on the River Tweed Salmon Fishing Museum. Scotland’s newest free to access museum and the world’s only salmon fishing museum. I’m sure it will be a great success and I wish the trustees all the best in this venture.

Well, that is well over 150 days on lockdown but we are getting closer to the game restarting.

All it needs for the clubs to agree on who plays who. At the moment, it looks like it’s a toss up between a Border Conference, like the Border League, and a conference with Kelso, Gala, Melrose and 3 of the Edinburgh clubs. As to when we start, that is another story. The best case scenario is that rugby will not start before the end of October. That is the date when all competitive rugby in Scotland be it youngsters, women or senior men will be allowed to start.

It all depends on the Scottish Governments timeline and the SRU’s agreement to this.

Honestly, we are working so hard to get things up and running in and around the club! Brian McFarlane, who is our COVID-19 Officer, is bringing through a strategy for ensuring the club is ready to start up again. After that we may be able to consider restarting with the bookings we had for community use of the premises eg U3A, Gentle Exercise, and Border Link.

Since the last Kelso Life, the Club has held its Zoom AGM. It was reasonably well attended and the Auditor seemed reasonably happy with our finances despite the fact we had a curtailed season. Most of the money we have, however, has come in the form of grants from the government or Scottish Rugby which we will have to use to get us up and running again.

Scott Forbes was elected President of the Club and there were several new appointees to the General Committee.

Although it did not happen at the AGM, Andy Tait has been elected Captain of the Club with Frankie Robson and Angus Common becoming his co-vice-captains.

The senior players have been training for some time now but are still only allowed to work in small groups. The age-grade players have had their training relaxed and they are almost allowed physical contact. Numbers at training for the various groups have been encouraging which is good as no one knows who, what, when or where we will be playing. Coaching skills will be sorely tested to keep the training interesting.

By the time you read this, the Club will have appointed a new Development Officer. There were 19 applicants for the post, many from overseas, and the job of narrowing the list down to 4 for interview was a difficult one as there were some impressive CVs included. Fortunately, the time gap from the season starting and the DO arriving will not have been significantly long.

As yet, there is no news of the opponents or arrangements for the Autumn Internationals other than the 6 Nations from last season will be finished off with our game away to Wales. This, of course may not be in Wales at the Millennium Stadium is currently being used as a hospital.

In addition, we do not know if a crowd will be allowed at the game. The SRU had an idea that the Edinburgh v Glasgow games at the end of August may have allowed limited crowds but that had been knocked on the head by the Scottish Government. The week before the Welsh will, apparently, see a game being played between Scotland and Georgia. There is talk of an 8 team tournament being played from mid-November with Scotland being involved with France, Italy and either Fiji or Japan. The Southern Hemisphere big guns are playing their Championship then rather than touring in Europe. Members who had tickets for the March game in Cardiff will be getting their money back soon, I hope.

As we have had no income apart from grants since lockdown, members will be invited to pay annual subscriptions. More of that is to follow in a letter from the President. Already some members have shown an inclination to help the Club out in this aspect.

KELSO HOCKEY CLUB When the government gave the “Go Ahead” to allow outdoor sports to re-start, Kelso Hockey Club jumped at the chance to get its’ youth section back playing again! Two three day summer camps were organised for all those aged 16 years and under during the last two weeks of the summer holidays. Over 60 members and six club coaches showed great enthusiasm in returning to the pitch and despite the varied weather, a very productive six days of hockey was enjoyed by both coaches and players alike!

Following Scottish Hockey’s new guidelines, the pitch was split into four quadrants and the children were grouped according to age to work on both skills and game play, all participants working hard to improve their game and making great progress as a result.

Huge thanks go to Mark Forsyth and Dez Wilson from Live Borders for facilitating the arrangements required for the camps to go ahead at Kelso High School and ensuring that we had everything we needed for starting back safely. Thanks too to parents and children for reading all the information given out and adhering to the new procedures for our safe return to the pitch.

40 Edenside Primary School and Nursery A return to school. A return to learning. A return to normal?

As a school, we were both delighted and nervous about welcoming our children back in August.

Following 5 months of absence, we all experienced a variety of emotions as we prepared for the return to school. The Scottish Government guidance set out clear directions about ensuring our school was a safe place to be. Once the numerous measures were in place, we had to ensure that everything else was ready.

Relationships As a school, we have 3 core values; we value learning, we value laughter and we value love. In welcoming our children back to school, we decided that LOVE needed to be our first priority. Being away from class mates and teachers for over 140 days was going to have an impact on our children. So, we agreed right at the start that reconnecting with our peers and our teachers was the most important thing. We needed to feel connected again as we set about introducing new routines.

Routines The numerous safety measures that we introduced needed numerous new routines built around them to make them work. So, within the security and comfort of reconnected relationships, we set about ensuring our children were familiar with and experts in a number of routines. Such routines, once mastered, enabled us all to refocus on our core business – that of learning.

Recovery curriculum Having the children back to school means we can now fully support them with their learning once again. Given the long period of absence and the varying levels of engagement with home learning, we designed and implemented a bespoke ‘recovery curriculum’ that ensures every child re-engages with learning and reconnects with the core concepts and ideas we need to explore.

Kelso Sports/ CLUBS KELSO BOCCIA CLUB was formed just over three years ago for those with any disability. The Group hires 2 rooms at the Abbey Row Centre each Monday for fun and competition from 12.45 till 2.45 pm at £3 per session including refreshments.

We welcome new members at any time.

Introductory session is free. Just come along and give it a try. We get between 14-20 players on a weekly basis.

The Kelso Gliders Team who play in the Borders League have won the somewhat competitive League for the third consecutive year which is a major achievement and the Club also have two individuals Brian Boardman and Nick Thomson who have won 2 silver and 1 bronze individual medals between them at Scottish Disability Sport competition. As Head Coach I am so very proud of my HEROES and know there is a mutual respect there.

Remember however that this game is played for fun and enjoyment as not everyone is interested in entering competition. davidlaing@tiscali.co.uk KELSO BOWLING CLUB At a recent committee meeting it was decided not to open the green this season. This was not a decision taken lightly but public health is the most pressing priority and we all have a responsibility to do what we can to continue to suppress the spread of the virus. However, the clubhouse bar will be opening shortly to ‘members only’ from 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays with physical distancing and good hygiene maintained according to health & safety legislation and guidance set by the Scottish Government.

We currently have vacancies for Bar Convener, Treasurer, Secretary, Lottery Convener and Match Secretary. Spaces in each session are limited and current guidelines are being followed, with a hand sanitiser available at the club. There are still spaces in some of the sessions so please visit our website to book on. We are always looking for new juniors to come and try tennis, all ages and abilities welcome.

Social doubles has started back on Mondays and Thursdays 1pm. Albeit slightly changed in order to meet guidelines. It is currently open only to members who must text Lesley (07824 613900) the day before to let her know if they are coming. Numbers are limited to 12 per session and players must stay in their 4s for the period of the session.

We are not taking cash as a club therefore, players are asked to pay up front for a number of weeks by BACs transfer. This is to ensure a safe environment for coaches and players.

Girls only sessions are run by L&K tennis on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday. They have a new app LK tennis which you can download from the App Store, register and see all the times of sessions and also book on and pay for sessions. We are always looking for new girls to come and try tennis, all ages and abilities welcome.

Adult Coaching is running on Monday nights with a Ladies beginners session at 6.30pm and Adult Doubles Coaching at 7.30pm. Spaces are limited in order to meet current guidelines. Please contact Lesley for more information and to check availability.

Leagues matches have been cancelled for the remainder of the year, however we hope to be able to run some competitions for juniors and adults if the restrictions are relaxed further.

KELSO SWIMMING CLUB So swimming seems to be one of the forgotten sports along with many other indoor activities. 14th September opening date is still in the balance. From a pool point of view in the Borders it looks like Hawick and Gala will be opened first. The safety measures will be tried here and hopefully rolled out to the other pools. Fingers crossed Kelso Pool maybe late Sept.

Kelso Churches Together September! It is tradi�onally a month when groups and organisa�ons start up again. This year will be very different. While schools will hopefully have reopened, many of our groups will take far longer to resume. None of us could have foreseen in March just how long it would take to get back to some sort of normality.

Some of our churches have now opened again for worship, while others are hoping to do so in the near future. Over the last few months churches have been tremendously inven�ve, offering all sorts of worship online; it has very much emphasised that the church is people, not a building. But at the same �me, many of our members have missed physically coming together for worship, and our church buildings with their various associa�ons are important to many of us.

As we reopen church buildings, the absolute safety of everyone a�ending church has been impera�ve, and so we have found ourselves with measuring s�cks, disinfectant and sani�ser, hazard tape and signage, making sure that our churches are safe places for people to a�end. At the same �me, we recognise that some will not feel comfortable a�ending just yet, and our services are quite different to how they were just a few months ago.

One of the most important things to fill up are risk assessment forms, before we can get the green light to reopen our buildings. There is a degree of risk to join with other people in worship – or to go into a restaurant or to go shopping, however much we seek to minimise the risk. But then life is a risk. Some places are riskier than others – such as the Middle East.

Having lived in the Middle East, I was upset to see Beirut ripped apart in the middle of August by an explosion at the docks. In a country with a failing economy, rampant corrup�on and divided by religion, it seemed to be the last straw. It was a failed state, and hope of any improvement must surely have gone. But no-one told the people! The following day I read of people who had travelled from all over Lebanon armed with brushes and cloths to help in clearing the devasta�on.

They were furious with their leaders, but would not give up. It reminded me of the book of Lamenta�ons in the Bible, which gives a picture of �erusalem in ruins a�er the Babylonian conquest. Everything familiar had disappeared, but the writer reminded the people that God’s love and mercy was there, new every morning. There was hope.

As we con�nue to ease ourselves into this �new normality’, we do so with hope and place out trust in the God whose love is there, new every morning.

Borders Search and Rescue Unit The Rule of Threes It has o�en seemed to team members that the team would go through a quiet period and then three call outs would come in a very short period. It has proved so recently.

At the start of August the team was requested to assist the Sco�sh Ambulance Service with a casualty who had collapsed during a hill walk near the Watch Water Reservoir. The North Air Ambulance was also in a�endance. �nfortunately the lady died at the scene.

An evening callout less than a week later had the team doing a night search for a missing person, along with other services, on the cliff tops near Lamberton on the Berwickshire coast. The following day the team was again asked to assist in the search which involved a Police Scotland helicopter, Police dog team, Eyemouth and Dunbar Coastguards, and RNLI Lifeboats from both Eyemouth and Berwick. �rustra�ngly the missing person was not located. A smaller number of team members met, on a subsequent evening, with police and a member of the Mountain Rescue Scotland Drone group, and inaccessible areas were flown over in a search with the drone camera providing images. The search was again fruitless.

Rope work for Rescue Team members met in geographic groups to prac�ce skills for a rigging rescue. Essen�al knots were prac�sed as well as how to get an observer quickly, but safely, to a cliff edge to ascertain the precise loca�on of a casualty. Preparing for an abseil with personal safety back up was looked at and two methods of se�ng up an anchor� belay system for a stretcher lower also covered.
