ay I first of all welcome readers to 2022: hopefully the New Year will see things in the preservation world returning to some form of normality, and that most, if not all, of the preservation clubs and societies that cater for the interests of stationary engine enthusiasts have survived the troubles experienced in recent months and will be holding their annual rallies once again.

It is evident from the emails and letters I have received that the Internet is playing a major role in the ever-changing methods of buying and selling stationary engines and associated equipment on various social media sites, however it is the ‘On-Line’ auctions (live and times sale) that seem to be growing in number. I am aware of two UK auction houses, Cheffins and H G Pugh, that hold such sales, both of which provide for potential buyers to see what is being offered for sale. This in turn allows Stationary Engine to feature a sale report with images and prices so that readers can keep abreast of current prices being realised. Bradford Amanco Look - Alike

Dear Editor. I got the January Stationary Engine today and see the Bradford - Lister D Look-Alike engine article. You may like to know there is another such engine in the Ipswich Transport Museum; it has Amanco in the castings. I was told that it was a Bradford product which originally came from a small-holding in Ardleigh, just over the border in Essex. This engine has been displayed for years on the back of a flat bed lorry. I contacted the

ITM, and despite the museum being closed to public, I was able to view the engine, which was situated in a position that made taking photographs somewhat difficult. The name AMANCO MADE IN ENGLAND is cast into the cover plate. It was made to run with a four-cylinder magneto.

The hopper, if seen in the correct light, shows signs that some cast lettering has possibly been carefully removed at the time of manufacture. The oil filler is a chubby-looking single bolt fixture.

Opposed-Piston engines Dear Editor.

I was interested in Bob Mullins’ article on opposed-piston two-stroke oil engines, having recently read the chapter on the TS3 in the book “Rootes Commercials”, by Peter & David Henshaw (Crecy Publishing).

This confirms that the design work was carried out at the Rootes works in Stoke Aldermoor, Coventry, with manufacture at the Tilling Stevens works. The authors also cover the logical followup in the form of the 200hp TS4, which was unceremoniously killed off by Chrysler after they took over Rootes, apparently because it was vastly superior to the engine then being developed by Chrysler and Cummins.

However, four of the prototypes were

surreptitiously salvaged for preservation and one has since to be seen running on You-tube. Possibly this attitude by Chrysler precipitated the end of the Lister involvement also.

From Bob Mullins’ description, the two cylinder Junkers machine appears strikingly similar to the contemporary Doxford design, which was widely used as a marine engine until into the 1970s.

There is an example of this at the Anson Engine Museum. I was rather surprised that there was no mention of the iconic Napier Deltic engine used in marine and rail applications but also found some stationary applications.

One of these was to power a mobile fire pump for use in fire-fighting in New York skyscrapers.

Around 1960, my father was involved in constructing a prototype small

carburettor and the tank is fixed by a simple bracket method.

Dear Editor. With reference to Joseph Sammut’s Bradford Lister D Look Alike engine in the January 2022 issue of Stationary Engine, I have seen another similar engine; it was located at the Ipswich Transport Museum.

Jamie Coates, by email opposed-piston engine based on the swashplate principle. This enabled a very compact layout with the crankshaft lying snugly between and parallel to the two cylinders. It ran very successfully once it had been realised that, to obtain smooth combustion, the movement of the two pairs of pistons needed to be slightly offset. Trials were brought to an untimely conclusion when the oil pump seized (!) and the inventor then appeared to lose interest.

Wilder Implement

Dear Editor. The picture of the PitchPole harrow featured in the Identity & Assistance pages of the January issue of Stationary Engine brought me back to my teenage years. We had one at home in North County Dublin; by attaching a cord to the middle lever, a gentle pull would allow the axles to rotate, thereby releasing the weeds and Scutch grass, (couchgrass to you?) in reasonably tidy rows to be dealt with later. I don’t think they sold in large numbers, as they came out at more or less at the same time as the hydraulic lift, when an ordinary cultivator could do the job, although maybe not as efficiently as the Pitch-Pole. It was designed for the Standard Fordson, Lanz Bulldog, Allis Chalmers and all the other earlier and more “exciting” tractors before the ‘Little Grey Fergie’ arrived here, mostly secondhand via Smiths of Cavan (a quick squirt of paint, perhaps a pair of lugged wheels on the back or from

Dear Editor. With reference to the

request from Deborah Peacock for the identification of her father’s engine featured in the Identity & Assistance pages of the January 2022 issue of Stationary Engine, I can with confidence say that the engine is indeed a Petter PU8. I cannot date it with any accuracy, but the late Jim Perkins in his book “Petter – I’ve Got A Job For You” stated that the PU8 engine was in production from 1933 to 1945. Newby Hall 2022

Dear Editor. I thought your readers might be interested to know that planning for the Newby Hall “Tractor Fest” 2022 is well under way. Over the last few years Tractor Fest has grown to become arguably the biggest engine rally in the country with over 300 engines regularly entering, and some 1700 exhibits in total.

Like most events, we have had to cancel our 2020 and 2021 shows due to the Covid-19 pandemic. When the government announced that the Whit Bank Holiday Weekend was being moved backward a week due to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, this presented us with a dilemma as this meant it would clash with our normal Dear Editor. In response to Deborah Peacock’s engine featured in the Identity & Assistance section of issue 574, this certainly looks very similar to our Petter PU8 (or PU6, the maker’s plate is very difficult to read).

Our Petter engine is fitted with an Edwinson pump and a wooden barrel as a garden sprayer and was supplied by a company in Ballarat Street, Belfast. It was originally used for spraying the garden in the Johnstown estate where our Museum is located.

We had the engine running a few years ago and the unit is now on display in

the Museum’s machinery hall.

show weekend. We quickly took the decision to make our event a three-day show for 2022 and the rally will run from 3rd - 5th June. As usual we are having a special feature in the engine section; for 2022 this will be an attempt to gather over a hundred, 100 year old engines.

As usual we are hoping to attract a selection of the larger engines, and to help facilitate the bigger engines, we will have two tele-handlers/forklifts on site to aid with loading/unloading. Once again, we will also be running the exhibitors’ refreshment tent, where during the show days, tea, coffee, cakes etc are available to all exhibitors as our way of thanking them for attending the show.

Having been involved in the production of two-stroke engines for many years Petters returned to building four-stroke engines in late 1931. The Petter Universal (PU) air-cooled engine was introduced in that year, starting at serial number F1001 and it remained in production until 1947, ending at engine number F24223.

The smallest in the range was the 2hp single cylinder model, the twin cylinder model was offered in sizes 4hp, 6hp and 8hp. Originally these had a bore and stroke measuring 65mm by 82.5mm and a operating speed of 1,500 rpm., but in 1936 the bore was enlarged to 70mm and the speed increased to 1,800 rpm giving a maximum horsepower 8hp.

The carburettor was a Zenith type 26FV and the ignition was by a BTH magneto, type MC1 or MC2.

Brockhouse four-stroke engine

Australian enthusiast Martin Westbrook, has emailed to say that among a batch of engines he has acquired there was one, apparently unmarked, which he did not recognise. With a bit of cleaning he found it was a Brockhouse. Upon checking with his “A to Z of British Stationary Engines” he found that Brockhouse is listed as having produced small two--stroke engines but his engine is a four-stroke, of possibly around 250cc.

The engine, which appears to be well made, is fitted with an Amal carburettor and a flywheel magneto and should be running without too much problem.

Ruston & Hornsby magneto

Phil Colton has emailed seeking information/help from Stationary Engine with regards to the type of magneto fitted to this Ruston Hornsby PB engine, serial number 178124; it has a type of magneto he has not seen before. The engine has spent the last twenty plus years locked away in a garage in a small village outside Grantham.

A lot of the magneto’s round aluminium body has corroded away, but the sprocket drive feels like it could be an impulse drive. There are no markings on the magneto although the bracket looks like it was made by Ruston & Hornsby.

Drake & Fletcher

Drake & Fletcher is a name we associate with crop and orchard spraying equipment, indeed pumps such as this example exhibited by Andy Skinner at the Kingsley Golf Course Crank-Up in late 2021, would have been fitted on the Drake & Fletcher Mistifer spraying outfit.

Crossley Brothers BVC1 engine W

e see a fair number of horizontal Crossley Brothers engines on our rally fields, and in the pages of Stationary Engine, but this time for a change I have selected the 8hp vertical type BVC1 engine, serial number 131374, photographed several years ago by Mike Milestone at one of the Newby Hall Shows.

This engine, owned and exhibited

by J Durose, had the information board accompanying the engine which told us that it was supplied on 25th May 1942 to Bell Brothers (M/C 1927), Calder Ironworks, Manchester.

As the photographs show, the engine was exhibited in its ‘working clothes’ so I must ask if it has been painted since then? PK. l

Crossley Brothers BV engines were primarily diesel-fuelled, but could also be supplied as a GV (gas) JV and JVP (petrol or paraffin.)

My JAP 4 Engine

purchased this JAP model 4 (early model) on a well known Internet site as it was only thirty-odd miles from home. I personally had not seen one of this model before, other than pictures The advert said that the carburettor was missing, but other than that it was complete.

I duly collected the engine, and once home made a start on its restoration.

There is always some trepidation as I start to strip it down an engine as to what condition the internals are like and whether a spark will be obtained. Well, not too much to worry about as the bore and piston and rings looked good.

The valves needed a good grinding-in which is always expected. The sump oil was rather thick and gloopy so a good wash out was required.

I then turned my attention to getting a spark; there was not even a tingle, so I fitted a new condenser and after some points adjustments a nice blue spark appeared. I next turned to the missing carburettor problem. I have a few Zeniths and a JAP 2A carburettor in stock, but unfortunately the throttle mechanism worked the other way to what was need so I moved on to plan two.

Plan two involved a Villiers carburettor which had the right mechanism, so this is what I worked with. I had to make a inlet tract out of 15mm copper pipe as the Villiers is an up-draught type carburettor.

After all the parts were painted and fitted it was time to see if it would work.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised when on the fifth pull it started and after some adjustment to slow it down, it ran for ten minutes until the petrol ran out. I found an old rotovator exhaust and fitted it, so now it is now nice and quiet. Since that first start-up I have since run the engine for an hour and all is well.

The serial number dates the engine to 1938, a year after production started. l

Danish FF engine in the UK

I

t was whilst searching through numerous folders of photographs for suitable images to illustrate an article that I came across a photo of a fairly nondescript-looking engine, a Danish-built FF, and for some unknown reason it grabbed my attention and has became the subject of this short article.

Something told me that I had read about a small number of Danish engines coming to the UK in an exchange deal between Danish enthusiast Jens Lauritsen and Dave Croft here in the UK. I found the article in the September 1982 issue (No 103) of SE.

This image, again found on the Internet, shows that the 1 ½ hp engine could be supplied to operate on producer gas.

A photo of a 3 ½ hp found on the Internet, it shows the exposed valves and rockers.

The exchange involved six Danish engines coming to the UK, a 6hp BLA, one 5hp, FF, two 3 ½ hp FFs, and two 1 ½ hp FF engines, while a similar number of English engines went off to Denmark. The makes and models of the UK engines shipped to Denmark are unknown.

An initial search of the Internet revealed the FF engines were built by the Bjerringbro Maskinfabrik, Svend, Denmark. Three sizes were built, 3 ½ hp, 5 hp and a little later a 1 ½ hp model was introduced.

Further research told me that the first FF engine, a 3 ½ hp petrol/ paraffin model, was introduced in 1928. In 1932 the 5hp model was introduced. Both models had all of their internal parts bought-in from the Ford Motor Company; Ford T parts for the 3 ½ hp engine and Fordson parts for the 5hp engine.

In around 1937 the little 1 ½ hp engine was introduced. This model differed from the other two engines in that it had all of the working parts enclosed and had a single flywheel.

As with the other sizes, Ford parts were used, only this time they were from the Ford Y engine.

There has been some difference of opinion with regards the meaning of the two FF letters cast into the March 2022

water hopper. Some say it means Farmers Friend while others say that they stand for Farmers Favourite, a title that later engines were exported under.

I should add that this information

has been gleaned from various Internet websites therefore I cannot guarantee that the data is 100 percent accurate.

If the 1½ hp FF engine featured here is one of the exchange engines, I would like to ask where it is now, and indeed what has happened to the other engines? If you own one of the Danish engines in question I would very much like to hear from you. l

“Taking your eye off the Ball” Q

uite often in Stationary Engine magazine we have reports of sightings of an interesting engine worthy of preservation in its original location, or even maybe engines which have been lovingly restored, but just disappear. An example of this was the partly-restored Crossley 9VOE which I asked about in a recent issue of Stationary Engine magazine and which has seemingly ‘vanished’.

However, back in May 2016 Ian Skuse, who has always had a ‘nose’ for sniffing out interesting old iron, had discovered a semi-derelict pump house on the boundary of the old Weston super Mare Airfield near the village of Locking. It had been broken into and was on the point of being slowly vandalised, but his subsequent enquiries led to the property owners securing the building and so the two engines and Gwynne pumps seemed safe - at the time……

Although lighting was bad, this is the smaller of the two engines, the Ruston & Hornsby VSO.

1941. A number of blind alleys via the Inland Drainage Board, and the land owners North Somerset Council, confirmed that the site including the pump-house was sold to an unnamed developer. With Ian’s help, I wrote an article which was published in Stationary Engine magazine, issue 513, December 2016, about this pumphouse and its contents.

Wind the clock on to December 2021; some six years has elapsed, during which time Ian had moved to

live permanently in sunnier and more congenial southerly climates. However for family and other reasons, when the Covid lockdown had partially ceased, and travel restrictions eased, he returned to the UK temporarily and on looking around his old haunts, visited the site of the pump-house. He was horrified to find that the entire area had been not only cleared, but was formed into five ‘catchment lakes’ to help alleviate flooding on the old former airfield, itself on a former

flood-plain hence the pump-house, and is now the inevitable housing development site spreading Weston super Mare ever more eastward. The pump-house had been completely obliterated.

There has been no news of the engines’ destiny or that of the Gwynne pumps as far as we know, unless of course one of our readers, who is maybe a devotee of one of the engine forums as well, recognises it from the numbers and the description, and knows differently. If you do, we would like to know that these very restorable and collectable items with known history have been saved from the scrapman. l

Ricardo engine in NZ T

his Ricardo Type E.6., No. 27/49, variable compression engine was made by Ricardo & Co. Engineers (1927) Ltd, Bridge Works, Shoreham-By-Sea, Sussex, England. Now located at the Ferrymead Heritage Park, it was supplied new to G. Cussons Ltd, Manchester for the National School of Engineering, Canterbury University College, Christchurch, New Zealand, circa 1950.

This engine is acknowledged as the finest instrument for teaching and research into piston engine performance, it is capable of operating on spark or compression ignition.

It burns a wide range of gaseous or liquid fuels at compressions from 4:1 to 22:1 ratios and it is possible to vary the compression ration while the engine is running. The engine is a single cylinder poppet-valve, four-stroke with a bore of 3 inches and a stroke of 4 ¾ inches. The valves are operated by an overhead camshaft driven from the crankshaft through two pairs of bevel gears. The cylinder is cast iron and is fitted with a hardened high-phosphorus cast iron liner. The normal speed range is 1000-3000rpm.

The engine was originally fitted with a Type KD1 magneto and a Solex down draught carburettor, Type 35 FAI. Within the main carburettor

is a smaller one for starting. The magneto and the diesel fuel pump are driven from the end of the camshaft.

The timing of ignition or injection can also be varied whilst the engine is running. The lubricating system is of the wet sump type and the oil, recommended Shell Triple, is delivered by means of an externallydriven pump direct to the crankshaft

and the big- end bearings.

A 500 watt electric oil heater is provided in the crankcase for warming the oil before starting. With normal engine operations, the oil should be changed and the filter element cleaned every 100 hours. The engine is cooled by a closed water circuit in which the flow is maintained at 400 gallons per hour by a centrifugal pump. Softened water or rain water should be used. Coupled to the engine is a swinging field electric dynamometer, manufactured by Laurence Scott & Electromotors Ltd, Norwich and Manchester. A large open-scale tachometer is driven from the dynamometer. l

Amanco Hired-Man

T

his well-presented Amanco Hired-Man engine was found buried on a farm at Middle Wallop, Hampshire back in 1973 by Mr Len Gandy.

Once recovered he set about its restoration, a task that took five years to complete due to its poor mechanical condition.

Here we see the engine driving a small mill.

Research revealed that the engine, rated at 2 ½ hp, was used by the American Forces whist they were stationed at the Middle Wallop army base to pump water into large storage tanks prior to being piped to the men’s billets etc.

After the war, all of the equipment on the base was due to be returned to the States, but in an effort to same time and hard work, most of the paperwork was burnt, while smaller items including the Amanco engine, were simply buried.

Once restored, the Amanco Hired-Man serial number 165283, was exhibited at numerous vintage events, and was even featured on the front cover of August 1978 issue of Stationary Engine (No 54).

The engine, in 1989, passed into the ownership of Mr Pothecary who rallied it for several years. It then passed on to its current owner, Mr R Bassett, who has rallied it on numerous occasions. PK. l

Nothing is known about the engine’s working history other that it was supplied new to the The Soudan

Government, London on the 23rd September 1929. (the Soudan spelling is in the sales ledger; today this would be spelt Sudan.

When Jimmy acquired the engine it was in a very poor mechanical condition having lain for many years in a ‘Shellgh’ (an Irish word for an open drain.). As you can imagine, every moving part of the engine was seized solid, but after months of repeatedly being doused with oils and other rust-releasing agents, the engine was gradually freed-off. The engine was then cleaned and repairs made after, which it was reassembled to see if it would run.

Jimmy got the spring injection mechanism to work but no amount of compressed air would get the engine to start. It was eventually belted-over by a Fordson Major tractor and away it went. After a short run period, the engine was stopped and air-starting was tried, but as before, it did not happen.

The engine was seized solid when acquired, but after months of being doused in freeing agents, all the parts that are supposed to move actually did.

Lister D

with the Spoked Flywheel returns after 50 Years

hile attending my old school friend’s Ruby Wedding Anniversary a couple of years ago I was asked if I wanted my old engine back. I had not seen the engine since 1974, having given it to Keith and his brother as a ‘thank you’ for help in restoring and rallying vintage engines in 1970.

Aged sixteen, we were the young upstarts in the stationary engine world then, but we got lots of help from other enthusiasts. One of these was an equally youthful John Cruse who had just begun work at his father’s lawnmower business and had already built up an impressive collection of engines. One day I saw an unusual Lister D with

a spoked flywheel at his place and thought it would be a good present for my friends so we struck a deal and I returned to their house with it.

We got it running and it was duly painted mid-Brunswick Green and the flywheel black and then rallied alongside my engines at various Kent and Sussex shows over the next four years. The black and white photo shows the Lister at the Kent Show in Detling in 1973, together with my Amanco driving a root-pulper, and my Witte Power Saw. We even went to Blandford one year with the Lister and a Wade Dragsaw; a distance of 140 miles, in a Morris 1000 pickup towing a trailer, all on newly acquired full driving licences! I still have

the pickup but later changed the Wade for an earlier model.

Back to the present! I agreed to collect the engine from Keith’s house near Bristol, but then Covid-19 struck. Finally in the Autumn of 2021, combining the visit with a vintage tractor sale being held nearby, I got to collect the engine. Keith had it in a nice warm dry garage; it had been partially dismantled over the years where he and his brother had worked on it but everything was there. He told me that when he and his family had last moved house, the removal men had tried to buy it, so I was lucky he still had it.

type RS1 magneto has been fitted at some point). The R on the spec plate indicates it is reverse rotation and S indicating a special order. I contacted Doreen Edgington through the Helpline she discovered that the engine was built in April 1931 and immediately shipped to Carter Bros of Billingshurst, Sussex.

Although it is fitted with an 18inch ‘Bruston’ type flywheel, there is no record of it being part of a generating set. Designed to run at only 1½ hp and 500rpm, was it supplied for another March 2022

Carter Brothers were well-known local steam engineers and were still in business in the early 1970s. Whenever we used to pass their yard on the main road I always looked to see what was the latest traction engine they had to work on. They also made a range of agricultural machines themselves over the years, some of which would need small engines.

In stationary engine circles they are best known for the ‘Carters Patent’

label on early Blackstone oil engines. In 1894 two of the brothers had invented and marketed a new oil engine that they called ‘The Reliance’, after the name of their works and which they exhibited in local shows. Only a few were sold but at least one has made it into preservation.

However they attracted the attention of Messrs Blackstones who were looking to get into the engine market themselves.

The result was that the two brothers sold the rights to Blackstones who employed both of them to head up their oil engine department. They would continue to oversee the development and production of Blackstone engines until the 1920s.

After a thorough overhaul, I am hoping to return the Lister D to the rally field looking as good as it did when we first showed it in 1970. l Stationary Engine 21

A Stuart Turner T

hose that know me will be aware that of late, my engine stable consists of model engines. I have had full size stationary engines, but a house downsize combined with a narrowboat purchase meant they went several years ago and despite having been back ‘on land’ for some years, I have never come round to resurrecting my interest in owning them. That all changed recently though as I have been promised a Ruston ZPR and in addition, quite out of the blue, the subject of this article.

In the course of sorting out a few matters, my friend Martin quipped “when you come over, you can take on a Stuart Turner I no longer want”.

Well, why not I thought, hence a few weeks later, the little engine arrived chez moi.

The engine is a P5XC, s/n; 55512, rated for 33/4 h.p. at 1800 r.p.m. The date of manufacture is not known for definite, but the serial number fits to around 1951. It is a derivative of the P5 marine engine, the ‘X’ denoting it as the industrial version and the ‘C’ as having a centrifugal clutch. A little

research (and a conversation with S.T. guru Stephen Williams) confirmed that the majority of these engines were destined as pumping sets for the Zwicky mobile fuel bowsers. And indeed, there was much evidence of drab olive kahki paint on just about every part of the engine, covering the more usual Stuart Turner colour scheme.

These engines utilised a slim flywheel, to allow for greater engine speed and were radiator thermosyphon cooled, the radiator fan being supported on a bracket bolted

to the silencer expansion box. The belt drive to the fan was via a V-pulley mounted inboard of the flywheel.

There is no governor, speed being controlled via a manual cable.

It is interesting that this example has been de-rated to 33/4 from the more usual 4 h.p. Did this also mean March 2022

a reduction in r.p.m.? If so, the spec. plate has not been altered in that respect.

This example is quite complete in respect of major parts. Sadly the fan bracket has broken and the radiator is missing along with the air filter.

The absence of a spark plug (why

do people remove them?) has led inevitably to the piston being well seized in it’s bore. Everything else appeared free though, but only a strip down will show if this is so.

I suspect the engine has seen considerable use as below the spec. plate, a small oval tag riveted to the barrel shows that the bore carries a 0.010” oversize.

Although I was impatient to start a strip-down, I had to temper my keenness as we hope to move soon and transporting basket-cases between locations is notorious for loosing essential parts. I therefore contented myself with spraying the piston crown liberally with releasing fluid, applying the same to all other exposed nuts and bolts.

I also removed the magneto as my impatience to see if this worked could not be contained! A quick spin showed that despite the lengthy period of inactivity, there was still a good spark.

Quite by coincidence and acquaintance was disposing of an original Stuart Turner radiator. It is not the exact one needed for the XC model, but I am sure it can be utilised as it also includes the all important hole through the lower section that allows a starting handle to be inserted.

So do I do a complete repaint or stick to the oily rag wipe-over (the latter being my usual preference)?

In this instance, the military re-paint, applied in the usual slap dash manner was peeling badly and the original colour looked shabby.

Combining this with much surface rust means that I think I will opt for the complete repaint. However, until we are safely in our new home, I will content myself with admiring it in an anticipatory manner.l Stationary Engine 23

Finding Fowlers

ack in October 2020 one evening, whilst perusing that usual Internet auction site, I spotted a small engine which piqued my interest.

That it was local was a bonus and whilst out, I happened to be able to make a small detour to view said engine.

The engine advertised was in poor condition and missing lots of parts.

However in the yard was a small Fowler engine, one with two flywheels, which looked different. It had been restored

but left out in the open, the once-shiny red paint now a faded yucky pink and all bright-work dull or corroded.

It turned over OK and looked like it would need little effort to make it work again. Despite an offer, the vendor said it would be listed on eBay soon.

Once home I contacted the Fowler guru Mike Milestone to ask his advice.

The thought of much pot metal inside and the fact it had been outside in all weathers rather put me off. He did confirm that two flywheels was correct and that would make it desirable. Sure

enough it did appear on eBay and made more than I wanted to pay on an unknown project.

In the back of my mind came the thought I had seen some Fowler engines at a mates, Colin Williams. I contacted him, and yes they were in the shed where I had viewed them a few years ago. A refresher visit was agreed and I went over, to be led down to the shed. Oh my, the engines in question were not the small PA models I had been looking at, they were socking great lumps! In the dim light it was possible to make out 1PC on one of the parts.

Both engines were hopper-cooled and in poor external condition, and one had been stripped out to a basic shell.

Not everything was there but enough to consider them a project. Colin offered them to me on the basis that one should be restored to working order, a deal was struck pending collection; the following week it rained! With no hope of extracting the engines, I said I would wait until spring, then suddenly in December Colin was gone!

Recovering from the shock of Colin’s untimely passing, and then the enforced lockdown meant all thoughts of these Fowlers vanished. However, a 1PA emerged as a possibility, one that fitted the criteria exactly; a restored engine that needed ‘tinkering with’. When the season eventually started again, I got more interested in the Lister H type that Bill Ovenden was nearing completion with and this led to a diversion into Lister territory again.

As the summer wore on and normality started to return, so the opportunity arose to collect the little 1PAL. Once home it was given a thorough clean and the carburettor removed and dismantled. A couple of minor faults were located within and rectified and a deep-clean in an ultrasonic bath carried out. All reassembled again, the carburettor was refitted to the engine, which was then wheeled out of the shed and a start-up attempted. After a few swings away she went, so with some adjustments to the carburettor, it settled down to a sweet rhythmical thump; so far it has attended two events where it has run all day faultlessly.

Assessing the project

Later that weekend, the engine running for the first time in my ownership and probably for over 20 years.

did it spark the memory banks about the 1PCs. Having now got the 1PA, I felt it would be a nice thing to add March 2022

a larger one to the fold and be able to compare the designs. Through Bill, Colin’s son Brett very kindly offered the engines to me on the same arrangement, thus a year after that first look at a Fowler, a 1PA and two rare 1PC engines joined the ranks in the engine shed. We had to move fast to recover the PCs as the garden was due to be cleared that week. A day was picked and with Bill’s help, the engines were dragged from their damp resting place, up the garden and into the waiting trailer. Once home, some rubbing of the flywheels produced the type and serial numbers, 1PCL, 40183 and 40178. With the flywheels removed it was difficult to assess which belonged to which engine but in the end I have come to the conclusion, due to the slight differences in corrosion, that 40178 was the more complete engine and 40183 was the dismantled engine.

From the Wico magneto fitted, I would suggest a date of approx 1943; could anyone confirm this please?

Next came the fun part of assessing the validity of the project, The dismantled engine was looked over, and as well as a busted governor casing, it had deep corrosion to many running surfaces and a frost-cracked block to boot! It was duly consigned to the storage shed and the more complete engine put on a small trolley to start dismantling.

The hopper was loose and soon removed. The piston was stuck, so some ‘jollop’ consisting of penetrating oil and ATF poured in after cleaning out all loose detritus and running an old feeler gauge around the edge of the piston.

This gloop was heated with a blowtorch until boiling and then left. I noted that the crank was solid so was wondering if the gears or magneto had seized; hence the timing case was removed.

The magneto was seized, unsurprising really given its external condition. This did not improve the situation, so it was decided to remove the crank housings, starting with the flywheel side first.

With this out of the way, the other side was attempted but now the crank moved with the housing! Modifications to a puller I had, soon had this side off and now the crank could turn in the confines of the crankcase, proving that the big and small ends were free. The crank and bearings were cleaned and the housings refitted, loosely retained.

I was now sure only the piston was stuck. It was also noted that the amount of ‘jollop’ in the bore had decreased, showing it was doing its work.

The block was wheeled round to the press. I found by luck, that an old partmade steel silencer was the perfect fit in the bore and with a suitable spacer, would do the job. Lifting the block onto the press was fun with the engine crane, but at last all was prepared and the Stationary Engine 25

Pulling the bearing housings, the bearings are white-metalled bushes with ring oilers, a practice familiar to owners of Lister Juniors.

After just a few minutes, I felt it was all warm enough to ‘have a go!’ Gingerly, the pump handle was operated and the ram started to bear on the assembly. No sooner had the pressure gauge started to register, the

piston moved! A few strokes had it at BDC, job done; the block was removed and wheeled back to the work area. A large pulley of the right bore size was fitted to the crank and a temporary key fitted, so that the crank could then be turned carefully, cleaning out bits each time it descended.

The big end bolts were undone and the crank pushed to the top and then retracted. A wooden packer was then inserted and the crank turned again, this time pushing the piston out. The rings were stuck and the bore looked to have some corrosion evident. With the piston assembly removed it was plain sailing to remove the crank and camshafts. A glaze-bust revealed ghost marks at the top of the bore as well as lower down so the piston had been stuck previously at TDC and then moved down the bore, perhaps in a past restoration attempt? A look at the timing-case showed there was little attention needed to the governor. The magneto gear is retained by two bolts and these were undone, in the process some rust that had accumulated was dislodged and the gear turned, proving the magneto was not seized. Careful removal showed that the rubber seal had been mis-fitted at one point, which is a pity given that after nearly 80 years it is still amazingly supple. to show this engine did little work and had received an overhaul before being laid-up. A new inlet valve had been fitted and the cylinder re-bored +20thou. One of the pair is said to have worked a pumping unit, whether static or portable is unknown, but if this engine did pump, it did not do so for long. Maybe the fact that the hopper shows the shrouded spark plug hole, as applied to the PA engines that proved so troublesome, had something to do with it?

High standards

One thing I must say is that the engine appears to be well thought out and engineered to a high standard. In the 15 years since Arthur Freeman-Sanders designed the Lister A and B types, these engines are in my opinion, a vast improvement. The massive balanced crank and flywheel, piston right up to the head, a ‘shaped’ combustion chamber, thin piston rings, lightweight con-rod and piston, the thoughtfully oversized bearing journals, shorter stroke, rubber oil seals on the crank housings, a compact footprint all point to a very modern engine for its time and a far cry from the Lister A/B type it’s derived from and a whole lot better in quality than the cheaper PA types. It’s a pity this example was left in a damp shed to deteriorate.

At this point I was of course missing a few items. A petrol tank appeared on eBay that was suitable and an exhaust can be substituted with a non-original fitting, but it would be nice to attempt to copy an original. A dipstick would be handy to plug the hole that is intended for it. The one big failing was the lack of a carburettor and any form of linkage.

A further trip over to Colin’s workshop as it was being cleared proved its worth

in finding a Solex 26FV carburettor, albeit for a different engine. A study of pictures and the parts-box revealed I have all the parts to make it suitable externally, but I would like to know the correct venturi size and jet sizes please.

Pictures sent from Jonathan Craske via the Internet showed the minimal linkage required. Piston rings appear to be the same sizes as used in the Lister 6/1 range so are readily available.

If anyone can help with information regarding the missing parts, it would be gratefully received so that one day I can fulfil Colin’s desire and have a Fowler 1PC operating again. I would also be interested to know of any other 1PC engines lurking out there, especially the hopper-cooled variety. I know of two more, but these are both radiator-cooled examples. There are allegedly two more north of the Border but that is all the information I have.

David Edgington’s Fowler book reveals precious little information on the PC range, so let’s see some of those sleepers out there please. l

rusted and the ‘Dremel’ was called into action to cut new slots. With this removed, the coil did not look too bad and testing the resistance proved that it still had a circuit!

Style 2 Wolseley in New Zealand

arly Wolseley engines, from the pre-production model and through to the Styles 1, 2 3 and 4 engines have always been keenly sought after by enthusiasts here in New Zealand.

This well-presented Style 2 engine, serial number 2302, which dates from circa 1916 was photographed whist being exhibited at the 2019 A&P Show, Canterbury, by owner Pat Quinn.

The Style 2 engine was produced in two sizes, 3½ hp and 5hp. Both sizes were available in hit & miss and throttle-governed forms; the throttle governed models had a slightly lower power rating as they were designed to operate on paraffin (kerosene). Two types of magneto were offered, a flick Bosch 22 or a Thompson Bennett type AD1. Early Ruston & Hornsby AP engine

R

uston & Hornsby Class AP (Agricultural Paraffin) engines were built in a wide range of sizes from 2hp to 10 ½ hp, although we seldom see examples of the larger examples on our rally fields but they are always highly-prized by enthusiasts.

This 7hp example, serial number 111518, was supplied new on 14th September 1921, the first year of production, to Oswestry Engineers, dealers of agricultural equipment, and was photographed several years ago by Mike Milestone. l

S&KWSEG’s Yuletide Crank-Up

n Monday 27th December the Sussex & Kent Weald Stationary Engine Group held its annual Yuletide Crank-Up at the Southern Counties Trust Centre Copthorne.

With the latest strain of Covid-19 and the uncertainty of which new rules and regulations would be imposed on social gatherings making life difficult for all event organisers, it was ‘touch and go’ if the Crank-up would actually take place.

However, things stayed as they had been

for the past few weeks and so the show went ahead as planned.

In the week up to the event we had had numerous phone calls and emails from group members, some confirming that they would be there while others advised that for various reasons, they had decided not to attend.

As the day started, things did not look too good weather-wise; it was raining and continued to do so for most of the day. However, as we arrived at the venue we were greeted by a few hardy souls who had arrived early to help set up things, for which we were extremely grateful.

We implemented Plan B, to exhibit undercover, but still have a fire to warm the cockles of our hardy supporters outside. As the morning wore on, more group members turned up, either with an engine or two or just to support those who did. We had thirteen engines, plus a very good display of Lister Timber Products owned by Bryan and Sue Sharp. They had several Jardinières, a Coal Scuttle, complete with galvanised liner and an Umbrella Stand on show. (Have included a picture of our own similar Jardinière complete with the Christmas Cactus in full flower.)

Of the engines: D Firmin had his Lister radiator-cooled D type, Ollie Goldsmith with his Lister A type, A & J Gisby had their Bamford OV, N Harris brought along a Bamford and hacksaw, plus a Mamod, J Fewster and Grand daughter Ashley brought their Lister March 2022

Next was L Hammond with his Lister D and Blower and K Sanderson with his JAP and lights. Last but not least we were showing our little Dockyard engine and a pump.

To feed the inner man and woman there were mugs of hot freshly-made turkey soup, sausages in bread rolls, teas and coffee. In addition, group member and former stock car driver A Harris, brought along some excellent homemade cakes.

The comments received told us that all who attended the Crank-Up enjoyed the chance to get out and blow the cobwebs away and catch-up with fellow enthusiasts. l

Collector’s Yard Up-Date I

n the June 2020 issue (555) of Stationary Engine which featured my article “Visit to Collector’s Yard” it included a Ruston 4VROHN in the ownership of the McKibbin brothers. Since then this engine has been restored and runs well. All the brothers have to do now is to find a Ruston-Bucyrus RB-19 excavator to fit it into. l

Here have a reminder of what the engine was like when originally photographed.

The engine, rated 40hp at 1,000 rpm, was sold new on the 9th November 1951.

Keats & Bexon Engines I

was interested in Alan Cullen’s letter the January 2022 issue of Stationary Engine with regards to a Keats & Bexon engine as I have the pleasure of owning one of these rare engines. It was featured on the rear cover of the very first issue of “The Stationary Engine Advertiser” as the title was back then.

The engine, which at that time was of an unknown make, was owned by Mr S Jackson of Southwick. It then passed into the ownership of John Upton, a well known collector of engines under 5hp. Upon his demise the engine passed to his son David and it was from him that I acquired it.

The engine has certain Amanco Hired-Man features and was for some time thought to have been an Amanco, but as our knowledge of stationary engine development grew it was later proven to be of Keats & Bexon manufacture. Keats & Bexon engines were originally fitted with high-tension magneto ignition but at some point my engine was fitted with the Amanco low tension ignition system, as seen in the accompanying photographs. It does however still have the small fuel tank that can be seen in that first issue of our beloved magazine. l

Although the Keats & Bexon engine has a distinct Amanco look about it, the manner in which the hopper fits onto the crankcase is somewhat unique.

i, my name is James Skinner I’m fifteen years old and I spent my whole life living in the Surrey hills around Dorking/Leatherhead and Guildford; I always had an interest in mechanical things which I had from my dad. When I was five years old I started Go Kart racing at Angmering race-way; I really enjoyed it. In my last year of racing I missed out on winning the championship by four points. I finished my racing career in early 2016 when I was nine years old.

By now we had moved to Leatherhead and there was a famous person that lived there, Donald Campbell. I became very interested

about him and his racing through researching his life and visiting Coniston Water where he raced Bluebird and tragically lost his life. This led into an interest in WW2 through school and because of that I got in to making models and dioramas. My family first got interested into engines when we visited the Great Dorset Steam Fair in 2017; we also visited a few local events including the Kingsfold Rally and Tony Haydon’s events at Marshal’s Yard, Kingsley, Surrey and the first event with the engines was Faygate village hall.

My first stationary engine was a 1945 Wolseley WD2 purchased from Mark Tewkesbury. A couple of weeks later we got our first attachment, a Drake and

Fletcher water pump. In the January of 2018 between myself, my dad and brother Dominic, we got another engine, a 1929 Lister A type in a box of bits.

Our first outing with the engines was at the Faygate Village Hall, a private crank up organised by our local club SEAMS. In the March of 2018 we got our first Petter engine, a 1950 W1H. Our first proper steam rally was Kingsfold vintage rally in the September of 2018. The winter months rolled in, and the rally season was dying down a bit with only a couple events left to attend. With my passion of the engines growing, we got our first big Lister in the June of 2019, a 1919 J type was purchased from another SEAMS member, John Peters.

Christmas of 2019 came round and my dream engine at the time was the Amanco Hired-Man. At the time my brother Dominic had a Hired-Man, plus a 3 Mule Team he purchased in the October of 2019. As a Christmas present he very kindly gave it to me; I was over the moon. I first took it to Faygate Village Hall with my other brother Nathan, who at the time had a 3hp Fairbanks, Morse & Co engine.

After being good friends with Mark Tewkesbury for a couple of years, he found us a big old Lister N type that he had known about for a good few years. Mark arranged for us to look at March 2022

the engine in late December of 2019; it had belonged to the late Eric Taylor.

His widow, Birthe, still had the engine sleeping in her garden under a tarpaulin awaiting a new future, its once-shiny brass had gone green and its paint work was looking rather grubby. We sat down in Birthe’s front room discussing the engine over a cup of tea and some cake.

We put a deposit on the engine and in February 2020 we went back and paid the rest of the money. With that sorted we gently nursed the engine onto our trailer, strapped it down and drove home. The next day we unloaded the N type into the shed with inches to spare.

Me and Dominic spent the next two weeks polishing the brass and the paint work after which we finally gave the N type a new life in the collection. We invited Mark Tewkesbury, Alan Harris and Bill Ovenden around to watch the fire-up. Bill soon told us what to do; me and Dominic gave the flywheels a quick flick and bang! - she fired into life, she was back!! We have literature from Doreen Edgington stating that the engine was supplied to a private bath house in Kemp Town, Brighton. It is Lister N type, 7hp, spec 8N, No 35484, Year 1923.

The third engine I purchased came from Mark Tewkesbury. It was a rather sorry looking 1916 Lister L type which looked like a rusty bit of old cast iron. I spent eight months restoring the engine during my summer holidays, taking it apart piece by piece. The old flaky paint was stripped off and everything given a coat of red oxide. I painted it red and green like the showman’s colours.

With the painting side finished and the engine’s mechanicals complete, all I needed to do was build a trolley.

A visit to the Curryer’s Open Day

I visited Darren Curryer’s Open Day in 2020. Me and Alan Harris fabricated the axles and machined the wheels when I got home. The wood was cut and we assembled the wood work, then I had to bolt the axles to the trolley. It was then time to drop the engine on to the trolley; we picked up the engine using an engine crane and slowly

lowered it down on to the trolley and when it was on we had to reposition it very carefully. Me and dad drilled the holes where the engine would eventually sit. We temporarily mounted the fuel tank and water tank and we gave it a quick run. Me and dad lifted the engine off and unmounted the fuel tank and cooling tank as it was time to paint the trolley as the engine was, red and green.

I decided to paint the trolley matt black with red wheels.

Probably one of my most wellknown engines is a 1912/1913 United type C, which I purchased in September of 2020. It had quite a lot of attention on Facebook. I soon found out it was a contract engine built by Nelson Brothers and sold to United who badged it with their own name. There were rumours that Associated Manufacturing Company had something to do with the United / Jumbo situation. Of what people have told me there is only a handful of the type C engine in the UK. I am in contact with another type C owner; his engine is just one number apart from mine. My engine having the S/n 1160 and his engine has the S/n 1161.

I would like to know if there is any other type C out there the same as mine.

After getting the N type, J type and my L type, I wanted another Lister; I wanted something unique. When I mentioned it to Mark he said there is a gentleman in Kent called Dick Macey who had a 1914 Lister L type March 2022

Here are the many trophies I and my brother Dominic Skinner had accumulated over our six-year karting careers.

This is one of many dioramas I have made; a Spitfire had beeneshot up in a dog- fight and had come down in a farmer’s field in France with German Luftwaffe personnel trying to salvage the badly damaged plane.

he had converted to gas. Dick made a valve out of an exhaust flange, it took him about a year and a half to make it work. Dick mounted it in a original Lister A/B trolley. He had turned the wood around on the engine so that the original turntable hole was at the back of the engine instead of at the front. He had the engine for around ten years before he sold it to me.

Before Dick owned the engine, it had a head swap with a 1911 engine that had once belonged to good friend Bill Ovenden.

In April 2020, after lockdown, I went down to Dick’s with Dad, Mark and Allan Harris to collect the engine, which is known now as the LG ( L type GAS engine) When we arrived at Dick’s house, he took us into his garden where the old girl was. I was amazed what craftsmanship Dick had put in to make the gas valve. He put on his gloves, turned the gas bottle on, gave the handle a swing and she fired straight into life; it didn’t miss a beat.

I was satisfied so I took the engine around to the front drive-way ready to load into the trailer. The only thing we had to take off was the water tank, the water return pipe and the exhaust. With everything strapped down, all that was left to do was to give Dick the money, then we went home.

The next day we unloaded the engine and reassembled it, connected a gas bottle and gave her a swing and she fired up into life. The engine has “pride of place” in the collection which me, Dominic and my dad have built up over the last four years.

Like my United, the 1 ½ ‘Detroit’ engine I own is very similar so I assume that it too is a contract engine made by Nelson Brothers, based on the Little Jumbo engine. I still need to find out the year and model as it is still a bit of a mystery. I purchased the engine from its previous owner who restored it, a full nut and bolt rebuild. He painted it an unique colour, Land Rover blue. Since I have owned the engine I have taken it to four events and it has attracted quite a lot of attention. I would like to know if there are any more Detroits the same as mine?

Finally, I dream that one day I would be able to get a Blackstone Oil Engine.

Two Small Engines I

n April 2020 my Father sadly passed away at the good old age of 98; with his passing my brother and I had the task of clearing his estate. Dad had three sheds in the back garden overlooking the lovely Hertfordshire countryside.

We chose to start on the smallest of the sheds, his workshop. He was a keen model maker, building mostly Romany caravans, carts and boats, all made of wood. On entering the shed we were met with pieces of wood all stacked up, benches covered with tools, and all sorts of model-making equipment. He had not been in the shed for several years due to his poor health, so you can imagine the task ahead of us.

As we were working through things, I noticed two small air-cooled engines under the bench; they were covered in sawdust, cobwebs and general rubbish.

The first engine I pulled out was a ‘Suffolk Iron Foundry’ type 75G 14 with the serial number 155760, model No 21A. It was complete and looked to be in good order, but when I tried pulling the starting cord it was obvious that the engine was seized.

particularly him trying to start it with the ‘kick-start” attachment. The mower was not a great success so he bought an electric mower.

I decided that rather than toss the two engines in the skip, I would take them home to see if the would run. A few months passed before I eventually got the Suffolk on my work bench. After it had been dismantled it became evident why I had not been able to pull it over, the exhaust valve spring had jumped its position and jammed up. There was no spark, so I cleaned and reset the contacts, cleaned and lapped-in the valves. All it really had required was a good clean and general service. After fitting a fresh spark plug and H/T lead, I was ready to reassemble everything and see if it would run. With a little petrol in the fuel tank, just a couple of pulls on the starting cord were required before the engine started and it ran without any problems.

I then moved onto the Villiers twostroke engine. I replaced all of the gaskets, reset the points, fitted a new spark plug and it started and ran. Like the Suffolk it had only needed a good service. I made a stand for the engine using bits of metal I had in stock, after which I attached the original ‘kick-start’ pedal. The set-up looks a bit ‘HumMarch 2022

Drum’, but it runs well.

I now have two small working aircooled engines but I am undecided whether I shall keep them or part with them as I am not into this sort of engines. I did however, enjoy getting them working once again at no cost. l

Mounted on a homemade frame might not be the prettiest of things, but it is running once more.

Crossley Brothers PH75 engine

his well-restored and displayed 8hp Crossley Brothers type PH75 engine, serial number 97377, owned by Andrew Fox of Ricall, York, was supplied new in 1924 to Mr Jack Abbs of Rockdale Farm, Winteringham, Malton, North Yorkshire to drive a corn grinding mill. It was photographed by Mike Milestone at the Newby Hall Trac-Fest 2012.l

A Visit to

Bath Working Life Museum

I

had known about the engines at the Bath Working Life Museum for about fifteen years; the last time I was in the area I never took the opportunity to visit, so one Saturday when I had a weekend to myself I decided to treat myself.

The museum is tucked away off a side street in the centre of Bath City, a handy location if you want to visit and appease the other half with a day out not entirely revolving around engines. Many of the exhibits are from the Bowler Company of Bath, which combined elements of general engineering and the carbonated drink side of the business. It also features elements of other local investors and businesses.

work of the local businesses which includes pattern-making and a lineshaft driven workshop which cleverly works off the push of a button, each element powering up in turn. There are also details of the Bowler fizzy pop bottling system using quite lovely compressor pumps.

For those of us who enjoy looking at stationary engines, there are three examples of the engines built by the firm S. Griffin & Co, one steam and two gas. Sadly I forgot to get images of the steam engine.

The early gas engine is rather lovely in its simplicity, with a large slide valve. It looks to have a steam enginelike construction as one might expect from anything built in 1886; it sits looming in the corner of the main hall.

from the entrance; you may miss this if not careful. It was made to the Griffin Pattern by Dick, Kerr & Co of Kilmarnock, Scotland. Some people may remember that this engine was on display at the Birmingham Science Museum prior to 2007, after which it joined the Bath Working Life Museum March 2022

collection.

All in all, it was a nice visit to the small museum and well worth a trip if you are going into Bath shopping.

While it’s a shame these engines aren’t running, it is good to see engines of this size and age from time to time. l

or the last few years, with exception of during Covid19, Rob Coles has held a small private rally for his engine friends. This year’s event, held in late October, was a pleasure to attend. The rally, which was held in a field somewhere in Norfolk, saw several attendees bringing along more than one engine, allowing the rest of us to enjoy the sights and sounds of thirty four engines in action.

The day was overcast and a little windy but Rob and his friends laid on bacon and egg rolls and plenty of hot drinks to keep us all happy; that, together being able to cuddle the water hoppers, meant nobody got cold. l

Etruria Rally 2021 T

he Etruria Rally was held on 11th September at the Etruria Industrial Museum, North Staffordshire. It is proving to be a popular event held at an attractive site alongside the Caledon Canal. The 1820s Watt-type beam engine was in operation with steam being supplied by a handfired Cornish boiler.

Entry to the site and Museum was free and was well-supported by the public.

The rally was very well organised by Maurice Barks with many interesting and early engines being exhibited, indeed some dated from before the war; the Great War that is!

A report on the rally appears elsewhere, although it has prompted a couple of points that readers may like to comment on. The first is the change in exhibits over the years. Many early engines are appearing now, but conversely younger engines are also being exhibited: an engine made in, say, 1970 is now over fifty years old and may be considered an acceptable rally entry.

Engine types have also changed. For example at early rallies, engines such as Bentall Pioneers were relatively common, yet it is some years since I have seen one exhibited. At early rallies, with the exception of the occasional Amanco,

The second point is that Andrew Wild exhibited a ½ hp Bullock Supreme engine. This British engine was made

by F. Bullock at its Newton Heath Works, Manchester, in 1930. Advertised as being suitable for powering an air compressor or driving a generator, it is a gas engine; nothing unusual in that you might think, but it is a two- stroke. Oil is dripped into the gas and air inlet, a simple principle but difficult to regulate.

The Jacob Haish 1 ½ hp model U s/n 2548 was made by the Rock Island Plow Co. of Rock Island, Illinois, in 1911 and was exhibited by Maurice Barks.

Vincent 75 engine I

saw this Vincent 75 engined rotovator for sale, together with two other old rotovators, on a popular market place web site. I’ve owned a couple of these engines before and regretted selling them, so went ahead and purchased it.

After a couple of weeks I got down to working on it. I decided on a completely strip-down, clean and rebuild as I know small two-stroke engines can be temperamental, especially as the crankcase seals can be a problem if not in perfect condition.

Well all seemed good in that area, and I did not have any trouble with the reassembly, all went great. As I The engine is seen here stripped-down ready for inspection.

would not be putting it back on the rotovator I made up a small frame on which to mount the engine and fuel tank. I had to adapt the power take-off to accept a Vee-pulley, so that a small water pump or similar could be driven by the engine.

The engine is of an all-aluminium construction fitted with a cast iron sleeve and is of one piece construction. The crankshaft is an over-hung unit with a large main roller bearing and shaft seal.

The crankcase is closed by a cover with the maker’s name etc cast-in.

The crankshaft goes through the starting mechanism and on to the magneto which is supported by a tapered bearing on the engine casing.

The big-end bearing is made up of roller bearings and the con-rod is of hardened flat steel. The piston has two compression rings, which are pegged and have a slightly domed head. It is my opinion that the engine is wellmade, even the exhaust was chrome plated I am not sure how many years the Vincent 75 engine was in production or how many were made. The company also made a 100cc version that was marinised to fit into the Amanda waterscooter that had been developed; I think it was that venture which brought Vincent Engineering to its knees. l March 2022

ecently l came across an old corn mill and chaffcutter in our friends’ old barn. We thought it would be great idea to get them working again, with an old stationary engine providing the motive power. Both of the machines were in original untouched condition and hadn’t been used since at least the mid 1960s.

The mill, which was made by Bamfords of Uttoxeter, was complete and in good condition; it even had its cast iron maker’s plates intact. After a good clean and oil-up it was ready for a test run using my 3hp Petter AppleTop M type engine. After the barn was tided, and the back doors opened for the first time for many years to give some ventilation, we belted-up the

mill but the engine would not start.

The problem turned out to be a fuel blockage in the carburettor, which was quickly found and sorted. The tensioning of the governor springs in the flywheel was also adjusted after which the engine ran the mill well. In fact we ground and rolled wheat with a mix of barley. It was pleasing to see the mill, which had stood idle for at least 50 years, working again! The chickens also enjoyed the feed from the mill!

The Petter, s/n 69392, which was supplied new on 15th May 1931 to a lift engineering company, has recently had a new set of piston rings fitted and the magneto reconditioned. Apart from that it is in original condition and is still on its original Petter trolley.

We then moved on to the Richmond & Chandler chaff-cutter, which was

located in the hay loft of the barn. We had to dismantle the cutter to allow it to pass under the roof beam of the barn before it could be lowered to the barn floor. Once the chaff cutter had been reassembled and like the mill, was cleaned and oiled, it was belted to the Petter for a test run. Happy that everything was in order, we put a few

sheaves which just happed to be in the loft, through the cutter to see how it performed, and we soon had a large pile of chaff. The reverse gear, which would have been used if the straw got jammed in the machine, also worked well.

We hope to make a guard for the cutter and replace some of the wooden slats on the elevator belt at some point.

It was great to get the old machinery back in action and working well. l

Where is the

Crossley VOE9

An ingenious restoration which was sadly curtailed by the death of its former owner

C

an it be ten years ago that I was asked to visit wellknown Victoria enthusiast Brian Read’s bereaved family in North Somerset to assess his engine collection with regard to its disposal following his recent death? Time certainly has relentless wings!

At the time, and after a couple of days spent going through Brian’s ‘less than tidy’ engine shed and workshop, his son mentioned yet another engine

situated on a relative’s farm some miles away. I later followed him there to view what had been Brian’s then on-going, but unfinished project, a Crossley VOE9, found locally in a quarry.

I took numerous photos and wrote it up as an article for Stationary Engine magazine, which was published in July 2012.

From paperwork found when clearing his effects, it seems that Brian started the restoration of the 23/25hp

Crossley, Ser No 113995, at least as far back as June 2004 at which time he appears to have contacted the holder of the Crossley Bros. Works records, Geoff Challinor at the Anson Museum, for details of it .

Over the subsequent few years until his sad death in 2012, Brian and his cousin Roy had expertly built an ingenious trailer to mount and display the engine, all of which was to their unique design; it had to be seen to be believed. The base frame of the trailer, fabricated using hollow box-section steel, did double-duty as a heat-exchanger or ‘heat-sink’ for the pumped cooling system. It was planned to feed this from a header tank behind the engine itself.

could connect to an hydraulic system which raises and lowers the front of the trailer to the floor. The ex-lorry rear road-wheels can be raised in the same way and by the same hydraulic source, so that the entire engine unit sits firmly on the ground on its base frame, making a very stable display at a rally.

The complete trailer and engine assembly had a covered roof, with the intention to use standard curtainsides so that the entire engine and its ancillaries were not only weatherproof but road spray-proof as well while towing.

Unfortunately, and after much time and money spent, the Crossley display unit remained unfinished, it was subsequently sold, and despite reports of it in the Weston super Mare area a few years later, it has simply disappeared.

I was reminded of this while reading Roger Walton’s interesting restoration article in the January issue of his similar but smaller Crossley VO7 and it started my train of thought as to the current whereabouts of the VOE9, no 113995, and whether any subsequent or current owner ever finished it as Brian had envisaged so many years ago. Somewhere to go and see some engines in 2021

very couple of years Andy, Mike and James Milestone fill Andy and Joy’s rear garden with a selection of their collection of stationary engines and invite other engine enthusiasts to spend the day with them and see the engines running.

As this was one of the few events available this year there was a good number of visitors who attended from various parts of the UK. Andy’s wife Joy puts out a good spread of cakes and biscuits with an urn full of boiling water for tea and coffee. A ‘Thank You’ pot is put out to raise funds for the Internal Fire Museum of Power https://www. internalfire.com/.

The Milestone’s engine collection is a mix of manufacturers and models which makes for a good display with some of them driving other equipment. l A Bamford driving a Pilter water pump.

H J Pugh Sale Report

n December the 4th Auctioneers H J Pugh & Co held its annual late season sale at the Hazel Meadows Auction Centre, Ledbury, Herefordshire. There was a wide array of items on offer which included enamel signs, cast iron implement seats, tractors, barn equipment and, of course stationary engines.

From previous sale reports it is evident that collecting enamel signs is a growing trend, regardless on the subject matter; if you were looking for one of these signs there were plenty to choose from, most of which commanded good prices (for the seller) with the highest price of £5,500 being paid for a Scotch Oil sign. However, I have limited my comments to the few that I feel of the most interest to engine owners. The most noticeable of these being for Petter Engines; measuring 18 inches by 36 inches it sold for £680. The others included Lodge Spark Plugs at £240 and Champion £360. There was also a coloured card Ruston & Hornsby sign, it made £880.

Moving on to the stationary engines, there were an number of Lister engines and a small number of what some might call up-market engines: an Amanco Hired-Man sold for £550 while a 4hp model made £850. A Bentall Pioneer made £800. A well-restored Americanbuilt 2hp Root & Vandervoort Triumph Line engine (made for the John Deere Plow Co) did not sell. l Footnote: The photos, descriptions and hammer prices have been taken from the auctioneer’s website. First up we have Traction Engine Rarities & Oddities – an eclectic mix of innovative designs, some of which will astonish you. From a double-drum ploughing engine to a steam roller fitted with steel cutters. Or what about a fourwheel drive Tasker traction engine or the Kerr Stuart-built engine with ‘Pedrail’ wheels that walked over obstacles?

These and more are here to both fascinate and entertain the reader.

Then there’s a chapter called Traction Engines in Trouble; explosions, bridge collapses, runaways. You have to see them to believe some of the fixes some engine drivers managed to get themselves into.

Also, in this edition, an interesting section showing vintage fairground rides on the roads and also the rides and side stalls themselves, set up in all their glory.

Finally, there is a short chapter depicting Fowler’s Field day back in 1887, when the engine-builder opened its doors to the public.

John Crawley’s photographic archive has proved to be a real treasure trove for this series and this latest offering is probably the most fascinating so far. John was a real pioneer of steam preservation, saving and owning many engines himself, as well as being the man behind the early Expo steam events and the founding father of today’s highly active and successful Bedfordshire Steam Engines Preservation Society.

Caught on Camera

The Little Giant Motor was manufactured at the Cliffe Engine Works, East Morton, Bimgley. Yorkshire. This example was photographed by Jamie Coates at one of the Curryer Open Day Crank-Ups.

This American-built Kohler lighting plant owned and restored by Graham Howland was photographed by Mike Milestone at Bob Lester Crank-Up a few years ago.

This Canadian-built Sylvester ‘Speeder’ railcar engine owned by David Carpenter, would have originally been used to powered a lightweight railcar used to ferry workmen up and down the railway line to take care of maintenance and repairs to line.
