At the IVR Gala Dinner, which takes place over the AGM weekend, there is always a charity auction. Amongst the donated items in the auction was a combined VR13 and VR16 Heavy Recovery training course donated by Nick Ovenden, IVR President. The original highest bid at the auction was from Junior McManus from M8 Recovery. Junior very generously

donated it back to the auction and it was then won by Sean Manchett at Manchetts Rescue & Recovery. The course was recently delivered by Nick which proved to be very informative and enjoyable for the Manchetts technicians that attended.

Four years ago, Copart UK Ltd began a transformation of its internal ﬂeet training program. Seeking to enhance safety and alignment with national recovery standards, the company partnered with the Institute of Vehicle Recovery (IVR) to implement the VR27 and VR28 training modules across its operations.

This commitment to continuous improvement doesn’t stop there. A second group of six instructors will

undertake the same intensive program in July 2025, bringing the total to twelve certiﬁed instructors across the UK.

TAVISTOCK SQUARE 7/7 BOMBINGS 2005

If you’ve been one of the lucky ones and invited to attend one of the PROF events over the last four years, you would have heard a regular message regarding the recovery industry and the fact it is the true fourth emergency service and not any one singular insurance provider who tried to lay claim to that statement in the past.

Most recently PROF attended Automechanika at the NEC, in doing so making two presentations in the Aftermarket Hub. A big theme in Richard’s presentation and in the industry professional panel event was how the recovery industry is the fourth emergency service and how it dovetails with the emergency services providing a unique service especially where police and the scenes of crime and preservation of evidence are involved.

This is reﬂected on the 7/7 bombing at Tavistock Square, London, back

in 2005, in fact Richard used the worldwide recognised picture of the wrecked double-decker bus in his presentation, that picture sends the hairs lifting on anybody back, emphasising the tragic loss and impact.

With the 7/7 bombing 20th anniversary just passing, the news headlines have focused on how the emergency services reacted that morning, and how brave those responders were and what the long-term effects have been on everyone involved.

However, and this is the point, not once have I heard any news reporting on how the recovery industry responded and supported those emergency services, and how they were involved in the clean-up and assistance in the gathering of vital evidence.

This made me think of my very long-standing friend and industry colleague Mick Jennings who was the recovery incident scene manager on that disastrous and memorable day, but has anybody ever heard him mention it or talk about it? The answer is no and the same can be said for so

many people that were involved that day, they’ve kept the incident, what they saw, what they had to deal with, what they were confronted with to themselves and not ever discussed it.

Well to quote a statement from Mick: “20 years has passed and now it’s time that we talked about it and made everybody aware of how important the recovery industry is in so many respects, especially as a support mechanism to all the emergency services”.

I sat down with Mick, as the ﬁrst person to interview him about his involvement some 20 years since that memorable day . . .

Mick, this isn’t something new for me, I’ve wanted to talk to you about this for many years, if you recall at least 10 years ago I commented on your letter of commendation, thinking you would tell me all, but no you just brushed over it, almost as if I hadn’t mentioned it, so thank you for agreeing to meet with me today.

I do know that you, and at the time your work, colleague Dennis Harding were key recovery personnel in the

clear up of the bus and 20+ vehicles involved in the 7/7 bombing at Tavistock Square back in 2005, would you mind giving us an insight into what you were faced with that day? How you reacted, how you brought your team together and what your involvement was working side-by-side shoulder-to-shoulder with the Metropolitan Police and the police’s scenes of crimes unit.

Can you also explain your decisionmaking in connection with the recovery of the London bus, especially when considering retaining all the evidence was so important?

Mick Jennings: “Thanks Derek, and your right, I haven’t spoken about it, whether that’s out of respect to all those lives lost and the family’s left behind, or for my own reasons and beliefs I don’t know, but I do think now I’ve shown that respect, I think it’s time I shared a fraction of the events, and as you will imagine this is only a snapshot.”

“Its 20 years, ago London was attacked by Terrorists 7th July 2005, causing hurt pain and death, which people are still feeling the effects from, destroying families, and leaving people scarred, our thoughts are with everyone affected.”

“The recovery industry, who are known as the 4th emergency services, were contacted to assist in the removal of the bus and 26 other vehicles, the other vehicles involved are rarely mentioned.”

“Working alongside the Police, Ambulance and Fire Service and many other agencies, we helped lift each

vehicle inch by inch, to help ﬁnd evidence, evidence that could identify both victims and the perpetrator’s, as you can image, middle of the summer 7th July, in the blistering heat, there was a lot going on, and the vehicle recovery industry were a very important part, yet something the media never mention.”

“It was intense, not just turn up, load the bus and go as we would normally do. NO, I lived up there for 13 days as vehicle recovery incident manager, I know that sounds extreme, but it’s a fact, helping organize each and every recovery including wrapping the bus in blue tarpaulin to protect evidence.”

“This isn’t the Mick Jennings roadshow, no we had a whole recovery team, and not only on site daily moving the vehicles, but the team back at the ofﬁce, who are never seen,

they were all just amazing and so professional in the circumstances.”

“It was a very eerie place to work, quite unimaginable. Once we craned the bus onto the low loader, I drove it out of London to an explosives forensic bay for further investigations, surrounded by police motorbike outriders. As we all ﬁnished on the 20th July, we were called out again to remove the bus that had failed to explode on the 21st July attacks. Not something we often talk about but on this 20-year anniversary, I have looked back with not only sadness for the people on the trains and bus and their loved ones, but how proud I am of the vehicle recovery industry and the team I worked with in such challenging circumstances.”

“Behind this big white curtain is a major crime scene, the biggest

crime scene in Britain, 7/7 2005 London has been attacked by home-grown suicide bombers.”

“The emergency services are called to deal police, ﬁre, ambulance, once on scene they realise they are going to need the 4th emergency service (THE RECOVERY INDUSTRY) the unsung heroes, the very same recovery industry who are dealing with incidents and crime related vehicles every day of the week and all over the country 24/7.”

I went on to ask Mick Jennings now of course CEO of NWVA, what was going on behind that huge curtain and how were you representing the whole recovery industry and dealing with a job of this magnitude, Mick went on to say . . .

“At the time I was Operations Director of D&G Cars, remember it was 2005, I didn’t leave D&G Cars and start LJ Recovery and NWVA until 2009. D&G Cars were a large and well respected police operator working for a number of different police forces. I received the call from Steve Ditchburn of the Met Police, at the time Steve was head of the MPA recovery operations, he said they were going to need a recovery incident manager to be on scene at Tavistock Square to deal with forensic removal of 26 vehicles and also the bus that was involved in the explosion.”

“I immediately spoke to Dennis Harding owner of D&G Cars, for his approval for the company to be involved, which was given. I headed up to the scene to meet the ofﬁcer in charge (OIC) at the white curtain, the fully cordoned off area.”

“Once inside the cordon I can only explain what I saw was utter carnage, walking around and stepping over parts of the explosion. Not only was the danger and carnage on the ﬂoor, but above in the trees on the walls everywhere was debris, my thoughts were immediately drawn to the victims and their families, but I had a job to focus on and continued to assess

what was going to need moving. I soon headed back to base to draw up a plan and pick our team, we had some of the most experienced people in the recovery industry sat round a table planning every detail.”

“The bus was going to be the biggest challenge, so we came up with several options; plan A, plan B, plan C, and plan D. We didn’t leave anything to chance, we also discussed at length our plans through, with well known recovery operators in the UK, to see if they could ﬁnd fault or add to the plans.”

“Next day it was all go. Dennis and I headed to Tavistock Square, the rest of the team either jumped in trucks to assist on the removals or stayed in

control overseeing it, with some still refining the plan for the bus. This is the length we went to in the planning, we obtained an identical double decker bus, put it in the yard and practiced non-stop on ways to lift it and to move it onto the low-loader and to preserve the evidence. We realised we would need one almighty tarpaulin, to lay on the floor, to crane the bus onto it, and then wrap it completely, to protect all forensic evidence. We approached a tarpaulin manufacturer who bespoke made us a tarpaulin, the finished item you can see in the photos.”

“I drove the low loader with the bus on its ﬁnal journey, from London to the explosives forensic suite for further investigations, this was under escort with seven police motorbike outriders. I had clear instructions to drive the beast of the low loader and at the same time to study their every move, as they continually rotated around the moving load giving hand signals indicating where and when to turn. We were told, under any circumstances not to stop for ANYTHING!

“I have a real vivid memory of the moment we arrived at this designated destination. I still remember the moment I ﬁnally turned the engine off as I parked the low loader inside the dedicated explosives suite, and the extreme adrenaline release as I came down and realised the

responsibility I had just undertaken.”

“That was not the end of the job, no, each vehicle involved all 26 of them needed specialist recovery. We lifted one, bit by bit, don’t forget a lot of them had also taken the full blast of the explosion and were in pieces, we had to help look for evidence samples. The photos show police ofﬁcers searching everywhere for any tiny bits they could ﬁnd.”

“We were working under extreme circumstances; we had a team all over us who wanted to identify the bombers and another team trying to identify the victims. Our recovery methods allowed them to ﬁnd lots of evidence for both, including the logo part on the ruck sack that was used by the bombers. It had gone underneath a car tyre and in the heat stuck to the tyre, a piece of crucial evidence we located as we lifted one of the cars.”

“I lived up there for 13 days nonstop, with a team of guys I will be forever proud to have served with on such a tragic and forensically important operation, in a July heatwave in full recovery PPE, gloves hard hat the lot. After 20 years of not really talking about it, I have ﬁnally reﬂected on the scale of the mission and always the professionalism of our recovery industry as a whole.”

“We, a royal we - “The Recovery Industry” rarely if ever get a mention in the news, on any major job, whether

it’s a fatal motorway incident that’s shut the motorway, or a serious crime job, but it’s the recovery industry who are there every time working quietly in the background.”

“Then after ﬁnally ﬁnishing the exercise on the 20th of July “mission accomplished” without any issues, now something else rarely talked about. We were called out again on the 21st of July 2005 to another bus, thankfully on this one the bombs on board did not go off, but we are a 24/7 service so off we went again, no questions asked.”

Mick, thank you for being so open and honest, however the one thing you haven’t mentioned and I

understand why, shortly after the police had closed off the case you were part of the honours list, with the police recognising your outstanding commitment and professionalism.

I know and appreciate you consider you were at the time representing D&G Cars, but what you were really doing was representing the entire recovery industry.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Back in 1999 after “A carpark too far”, Frank McCallister, Chris Jones and myself met at Warwick Services to discuss an alternative to AVRO EX, an all industry exhibition incorporating a European concept. There the European Tow Show concept was born and I was tasked with pulling it all together.

For the record, AVRO EX was the center piece of the vehicle recovery industry calendar. It was a fantastic social and business event, the shop window into the very souls of our work providers who back in the day would close the hotel bars alongside of their VRO’s. It was really good but didn’t last.

In 1997 I had the great honour of being appointed AVRO EX 97 show director. A stroke of genius shown by then AVRO president Frank McCallister a true friend and pioneer of the recovery industry. That stroke of genius prepared us both for the task we would be taking on.

If I could produce an AVRO ex that for the very ﬁrst time showed a proﬁt, Then I could produce the blueprint that they would convert into the European Tow Show. I didn’t want to call it the European Tow Show, that was Franks Idea. I think Frank started WOKE, amongst other things.

Realising the magnitude of the task ahead we needed a Tow Show team, so I asked Roy Jones to join. Roy was a brilliant organiser and Chairman of the IVR, he organised and ran the IVR AGM dinner for years. You could say Chairman then, and everyone knew what you meant! Roy Jones was very well respected by everyone, including myself, and his contribution to the tow show helped to make it the success story it became. Roy is still very much missed by us all.

Frank and Roy would go on to take the Tow Show from Donnington to Telford and that Tow Show dynasty continues today. We’re out of Europe now, but as one of the founders, the tow show holds a special place in that brick that passes for my heart.

Many things have begun at the Tow Show. Not least RISC; who can forget Nikki Kings announcement in the Dark as together we founded RISC, launched at Donnington.

The following year at Telford, my ponytail was cut from my body as part of a pledge I had made to raise

money to launch RISC. Cutting my hair raised thousands in pledges, Frank McCallister raised about £2

In 2018, I launched the Campaign for Safer Roadside Rescue and Recovery the catalyst of PROF and of course culminating the use of rear facing red lights.

Now for the ﬁrst time in over 20 years the Tow Show has grown into needing a new home, a bigger home, a wider shop window for the recovery industry to be seen through. Stoneleigh is an impressive new venue with boundless possibilities of new partners, new opportunities and new concepts.

With the move from Telford brings new challenges. Stoneliegh presents a very new Tow Show concept and I am very excited about that.

If I learnt anything about being at Automechanika, it’s that we have a much larger place in the automotive sector than we give ourselves credit for. We are a major part of the automotive industry and maybe instead of trying to be included in their concept of the automotive industry we should get off our arses and proﬁle what is a fact. Get some of the automotive industry to join us at Stoneleigh over the next few years!

Historically, Headline Sponsors of the Tow Show have been large commercial entities looking to break into recovery industry to proﬁle their companies and sell us their products. CALL ASSIST CONTINUES TO SUPPORT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Last month, the Call Assist team put on their walking boots and took part in St Helena Hospice’s ﬂagship fundraising event: the Pier to Pier walk.

This annual event has been taking place since 2011 and continues to be a key fundraiser in ensuring that St Helena Hospice staff are able to continue the fabulous work they do.

Starting at Clacton Pier, the Call Assist team took a scenic coastal stroll all the way to Walton Pier, with some opting to make the journey back to Clacton Pier walking a staggering total of 14 miles. But the team took it on in their stride and were successful in raising a grand total of £1128.75 for St Helena Hospice!

These valuable funds will help to ensure that St Helena Hospice is able to continue providing crucial support to those in need.

St Helena Hospice is a charity that helps people in north east Essex face incurable illness and bereavement by supporting them, their families, friends and carers.

But the charitable efforts didn’t stop there! Earlier this month, Call Assist staff were privileged with

the chance to meet some of the wonderful staff and volunteers at Colchester Foodbank.

Whilst there, the Call Assist team spent the day lending a helping hand, sorting and packing food parcels. They also utilised this opportunity to further support the community by

providing donations, everything from the essentials to treats and body care, to be given to those in the local community who need it most.

Call Assist is thrilled to have been able to contribute to the fantastic work that the Foodbank undertakes in providing support to the local community. Ben Johnson, Call Assist Director of Networks, spoke about the experience:

“It was a privilege to volunteer at the Colchester Foodbank along with my colleagues from Call Assist. Hopefully this is the start of a long relationship with a wonderful charity that gives so much to the residents of Colchester who find themselves facing financial difficulties.

“Many of us take for granted the access we have to the basics such as food and clothes, so to witness ﬁrsthand how the Foodbank supports individuals and families facing food insecurity, not only with the basic supplies but also advice on other areas of help or perhaps just by taking time for a chat, is humbling and a testament to the permanent volunteers involved.”

Colchester Foodbank is part of The Trussell Trust’s nationwide network of 428 Foodbanks, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.

Automechanika Birmingham 2025 marked a watershed moment for the UK automotive industry, as the event welcomed more than 15,000 visitors for the ﬁrst time in its history - a signiﬁcant milestone that underscored the sector’s resilience, growth and appetite for innovation.
