Recently Hobbs Recovery Services were invited to attend a Transport Technology Forum (TTF) demonstration day at Millbrook. This is an annual event to explore how technology can assist in promoting innovative transport technology solutions.
Mac Hobbs from Hobbs recovery explains:
We were invited to attend by HAAS Alert as we had been helping with some of the testing of the Safety Cloud® system, having been part of the IVR working group which was set up to approach HAAS Alert some time ago, with a view to help bring this innovation to the recovery industry and after many months of meetings we were happy to endorse it as a great safety device for all road users and especially roadside workers.
Since engaging with HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud® digital alerting solution, it has developed considerably and should be available to all very soon and this has now become an important addition to the Transport Technology Forum.
Should you be unaware of Safety Cloud® and how it works I would suggest you take a look at the HAAS Alert website as this is a very brief description of how a working recovery vehicle is now able to send a signal to other road users to warn of the hazard ahead and I believe this will become a very important and useful tool to make the industry a safer place.
There were several government bodies in attendance on the day along with representation from the emergency blue light services. The day demonstrated the progress and the future ability of connected technology, which is boundless and some exciting advances were discussed.
All in all, it was a great day and an interesting development for our
industry, which I believe will be as important as red lamps in the quest for greater safety
This is again another initiative by The IVR that has far reaching benefits for the recovery industry and showcases the IVR ‘s ability to deliver these benefits, unincumbered by commercial considerations.
The IVR Chairman, Chris Hoare said, “The potential of the Safety Cloud® was initially highlighted by John Coupland who became part of the IVR working group. The IVR would like
to thank John and all members of the working group, that helped to bring Safety Cloud® to the UK giving their time and expertise free of charge, for the benefit of all. As Mac alludes to, Safety Cloud® has the potential to be a game changer for the recovery industry.”
For further information about Safety Cloud® developed by HAAS Alert, contact The IVR office via mail@ theivrgroup.com or 01895 436426. You can also visit the HAAS Alert website for further details www.haasalert.com/gb.
For the very first time the recovery industry is off to Automechanika, the largest automotive tradeshow in the UK, PROF along with several of its stakeholder partners are having a trade stand to advertise this fantastic industry to the wider audience, this includes motor manufacturers, car and truck dealers, independent workshops and bodyshop’s, the length and breadth of the country.
Another one of Richard Goddard and PROF initiatives, a lightbulb moment that was triggered at last year’s NTDA 95th Annual Dinner, and the 11th Tyre Industry Awards Ceremony, where incidentally, both Richard and I received the Chief Executive’s Round
by Derek Firminger
and Black award, presented to us both in recognition of the dedication and work we had done with the Campaign for Safer Roadside Rescue & Recovery (CSRRR) and for achieving the impossible, the use of red lamps for both the recovery and tyre Industry’s. Why is that relevant? WelL . . .
It was a celebratory moment at the bar after the awards ceremony was over, we were both taken by the number of individuals who approached
us at the bar to congratulate and thank us both for the work we had done, one of those was the organiser and the headline brand behind Automechanika, Joanne Knowles. Joanne had already approached Richard earlier in the evening, asking about PROF and the recovery industry, as she had heard so much about PROF from her industry colleagues, now she was back congratulating us both, not forgetting we had no clue we were getting an award, recognition not from recovery, no the tyre industry, that was incredible.
Anyway, Richard was quick to start asking Joanne questions about the Birmingham event, Automechanika. What was it? Who’s there? How many
This time I was caught by surprise “The Recovery Industry goes Roadside” with PROF and its strategic partners and sponsors having a trade stand at this coming years Automechanika at the NEC Birmingham 3-5 June 2025 “ “
message and how key rescue and recovery is in supporting the Police, from their expertise in recovering vehicles involved in crime without compromising evidence, to clear up and support following a terrorist attack.
The message is extended as the mainstay in maintaining the traffic flow of the strategic road network and how National Highways would be crippled without the support of the independent recovery network. Remember this is not an audience of recovery operators, no this is an audience of influential automotive experts.
Day two will be more of the same, only this time Richard will be supported by a panel of industry experts taking questions from the audience, both days events will be supported by a couple of short videos, a collage of pictures sent in by you recovery professionals and magazine readers, industry experts in your own right, still images showing off your vehicles, equipment and expertise, another first, because similar videos have been produced before, but never shown to such a wide and varied audience, no we normally sit in a room and play it to ourselves.
PROF was formed back in 2018, Richard set a clear mandate to get the use of red lamps for the recovery and tyre industries. Its success in bringing this industry together as one voice and gaining the respect of most if not all Government agencies is clear for everyone to see, and it’s all been done for the betterment of the whole industry.
That original mandate was achieved and became reality last year, Richard could have closed the book, job done and walked off into the sunset over London, but no he realised the size and the power of the animal he had created, so the journey still goes on, and this event is going to be an even more powerful message.
PROF, not funded by memberships, no it has no members, it has strategic partners and industry stakeholders, any funding comes from sponsorship, and believe me this event is racking
up some serious costs, now those sponsors continue to support everything PROF does, because it is successful and has time after time delivered. Red Lamps was big, but this is bigger, this is wider reaching and set to benefit the whole industry and its future financial stability and PROF’s sponsors realise this and are quick to provide their support.
So, the message is, If I can encourage the magazine readers and their colleagues to attend and support this latest PROF led event and to fly the flag for the recovery industry, it would be massively appreciated.

GSF Car Parts, the UK’s fastest-growing motor factor, has partnered with BGA Automotive on an exclusive offer to give away a free limited edition BGA trucker cap with every BGA timing chain kit sold during May.
GSF is the largest distributor of BGA timing chain kits in the UK, and stocks more than 130 references. These include kits for petrol and diesel cars from all major European and Asian OEMs.
BGA timing chain kits are engineered and tested to match OEquality specification and are supplied with an industry-leading three-year warranty.
All BGA chains are pre-lubricated with a specially formulated chain lubricant which guarantees the prelubrication to synchronise with the engine lubrication, with no adverse effects to the engines lubrication system.
This unique formula also protects the chain against external elements up to and during the installation; aids the lubrication of the chain on initial startup after installation, prior to the full engine oil supply reaching your newly fitted components; and reduces the risk of premature wear occurring by
running a non-lubricated chain. To find out more about the full BGA range and make the most of this promotion, speak to your local GSF branch.

After more than a decade at the helm of the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA), CEO Stefan Hay will step down from his role this summer. During his 11-year tenure, Stefan has helped to transform the NTDA into a financially robust, strategically influential and professionally respected trade body, laying firm foundations for a new chapter in its development.
Stefan will formally leave the NTDA at the end of July 2025 and will take up the role of CEO at the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA) at the beginning of August. Recruitment for his successor is already well underway, with the NTDA Board seeking a new Chief Executive Officer to build on the strong platform Stefan has created and guide the Association through the next phase of growth and industry advocacy.
“It has been an honour to lead the NTDA and to work with such a committed, knowledgeable and engaged membership,” said Stefan. “This is an industry that deserves to be heard and respected and I’m proud that the Association has helped make that happen over the last decade. The next CEO will inherit an outstanding team, a strong executive structure and an organisation that punches well above its weight in terms of influence. I wish the Association every success in its next chapter.”
“Since joining in January 2014, Stefan has overseen a period of sustained progress for the NTDA, and we wish him every success in the future. The Association now stands in its strongest financial position in decades, with a reputation for
proactive leadership on the most pressing challenges facing the UK tyre trade. Under Stefan’s direction, the NTDA has delivered a programme of work that has raised professional standards, influenced government policy, and brought members closer together,” said Martin O’Brien, NTDA National Chairman.
One of Stefan’s most impactful legacies has been the expansion and success of the Association’s flagship professional licensing programmes. Since 2013, over 16,000 individual licences have been issued through the REACT scheme and the Tyre Technician Professional Development Scheme (TTPDS), with many technicians now onto their third refresher course.
This commitment to raising professional standards and ensuring safer working practices has helped establish tyre fitting and roadside emergency response as a recognised and respected discipline, particularly with the police service, highway authorities and fleet customers.
The NTDA has also cemented its role as a persuasive voice in national policy discussions, working alongside government departments, agencies, and allied associations to secure major wins for the industry. This includes:
● Successfully lobbying for the ban on 10-year-old tyres on trucks and buses in both Great Britain and Northern Ireland;
● Gaining approval for rear-facing red flashing lamps on tyre incident response vans, improving roadside safety for technicians and other road users;
● Playing a key role in blocking proposals to extend MOT intervals, preserving annual roadworthiness
Since joining in January 2014, Stefan has overseen a period of sustained progress for the NTDA, and we wish him every success in the future. The Association now stands in its strongest financial position in decades

checks as a critical safety tool. These outcomes reflect a longterm investment in strategic relationships with bodies such as the Department for Transport (DfT), DVSA, National Highways and other influential stakeholders. Stefan’s tenure has also seen the NTDA grow its role as a focal point for the industry. The Association’s flagship events, including the annual Tyre Industry Conference and the Tyre Industry Awards Ceremony and Annual Dinner, are now among the most anticipated fixtures in the automotive aftermarket calendar, regularly attracting hundreds of delegates and high-level speakers from across the UK and beyond.
“This is a time of evolution for the NTDA,” explained Martin. “Stefan has built a legacy of stability, credibility and influence and we’re now in a strong position to recruit a new Chief Executive who can take that forward. Our members face big challenges, from sustainability and digitalisation to skills shortages and regulatory change and the NTDA is well placed to lead the conversation and support the sector through whatever comes next.”

The Motor Ombudsman, the Ombudsman for the automotive sector, has launched the sixth edition of its annual Star Awards. The accolades recognise Motor Ombudsmanaccredited businesses and individual team members across the length and breadth of the UK who have gone beyond the call of duty to assist a customer in their time of need.
The Star Awards are divided into two main categories, the first being the eight regional Star Awards for independent garages, franchise dealers, and body repair centres that are signed up to The Motor Ombudsman’s Vehicle Sales and/ or Service and Repair Codes of Practice. The second is the Customer Service Star Awards, which celebrate exceptional service delivered by vehicle manufacturers and extended warranty providers that are committed to the New Car and Vehicle Warranty Products Codes respectively.
One of the key attributes of The Motor Ombudsman’s Star Awards is that they are driven by customers submitting a nomination via the body’s dedicated online portal
(TheMotorOmbudsman.org/Awards).
It is here that consumers can write a short account detailing altruistic acts of kindness and generosity, and the positive steps taken by a business or a named member of staff to resolve their motoring concerns, no matter how big or small the gesture.
New for this year’s competition is the introduction of the Community Star Award, where consumers can also shine the spotlight on their nominee for the support of a dedicated cause in the local area. This could include, giving up time out of hours to work with a charity, putting on a fundraising event, or sponsoring a nearby sports team at grassroots level.
As the contest continues to grow in profile, last year’s Star Awards competition saw a record number of nominations at nearly 3,300, with the greatest number of businesses ever put forward, and consumers are now able to submit their entries for 2025 over the coming five months prior to the closing deadline of Friday 17th October.
From these nominations across the different regions and categories, and according to an established
set of criteria, it is then the task of The Motor Ombudsman to create a shortlist of the three finalists for each of the Star Awards, which will see a total of 33 businesses and individuals in contention to win the eleven trophies on offer. The names etched on to this year’s silverware will be determined by a panel of automotive industry experts, which will see four judges reach a joint consensus for each award. Similarly, two entries will also be commended for being a finalist for their achievement of being a runner-up in their class.
The final stage of the judging process sees the eight regional Star Award winners pitted against one another, and based on the merits of their winning nomination, one will be named as the recipient of the overall and coveted National Star Award – the highest accolade of the competition. To date, the Hall of Fame boasts three independent garages, spanning Cornwall to Scotland, a franchise dealership in Northern Ireland, and an individual salesperson from a car showroom.

based in Leeds, and the 2024 recipient of the regional trophy for the North and the National Star Award, explained: “Since being crowned a double winner at the end of last year, we have had such a positive reaction from our local community and beyond, and the Star Awards have really put our business front and centre. In fact, after our customers and motorists in the region read about our achievement in the press and on social media, the phone didn’t stop ringing, and we are really grateful for having the opportunity to be recognised with such a prestigious honour.”
The Motor Ombudsman’s successful partnership with the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI)’s coveted Hero Awards will also continue for the third successive year, where the
2025 National Star Award trophy will be presented in-person to the winner in the prestigious surroundings of the Houses of Parliament in London’s Westminster. The chosen business or individual team member will also be bestowed £2,000 worth of shopping vouchers, as well as valuable marketing exposure, including a bespoke video filmed at the winner’s premises.
Bill Fennell, Chief Ombudsman and Managing Director of The Motor Ombudsman, said: “The Star Awards continue to go from strength to strength, and we saw another record number of nominations last year, highlighting the contest’s growing appeal across the motor industry. It is always an exciting
time when we restart the search for a new generation of Stars, and have the chance to read so many inspiring customer stories about how Motor Ombudsman-accredited businesses and their staff members have moved mountains and truly gone beyond the call of duty to ensure the very highest level of customer service.”
Bill added: “As we build the Star Awards further, and with so many businesses across the UK making such valuable efforts to help others, and flying the flag for charities, the addition of the new Community Star Award will be a great way of recognising the countless hours of hard work, which ultimately make that all-important difference.”
