One winner we’re proud to say was Derek Firminger, who was presented with the prestigious Gold Truck Award for his services to the industry. Very well deserved and Derek takes a look back at the history of the award in his edit on page eight.

OTHE IVR AGM AND GALA DINNER 2025

n 8 March 2025 the IVR AGM took place at its now familiar venue in Stratford Upon Avon. The formal business of the AGM was preceded by interviews with the nominated ﬁnalists of the AA sponsored Jack Ovenden Award. George Loveridge from Midhurst Engineering, Jason Reeve from GRS Recovery and Maeve O’Sullivan from SOS Recovery. The prestigious award would not be possible without

the AA’s generous support, which culminates in the recognition of those who are taking their training, new knowledge and enthusiasm forward in the industry today. The IVR AGM weekend is a prime time to celebrate the work the ﬁnalists put into training to become a professional recovery operator. Also recognised were two new fellowships for Andy Nock from Dynes Recovery and IVR approved

training instructor Michael Gibson from Judgepower, both popular choices for their continual support of the IVR through various avenues.

The formal AGM is always conducted behind closed doors for members only, but for the presentations that follow, others in the industry are invited too. This year there were presentations from Purchase Direct an organisation that offers an outsourced procurement

Richard Goddard brieﬂy outlined Automechanika and suggested that the recovery industry look outwardly to raise its proﬁle. He explained that PROF had acquired exhibition space, with some industry partners and encouraged those in the recovery industry to attend Automechanika, which takes place in Birmingham on 3-5 June 2025 at the NEC.

who provided photographs, anecdotes and a fascinating history lesson of how Bill progressed in recovery with Holmes Wreckers, Dial Holmes bodies and air cushions. Bruce himself followed in his father’s footsteps and has his own history to share, but this particular presentation was the legacy of his father Bill. Bruce now resides in Canada, so the Institute was so grateful that he travelled to the UK and also for his extremely generous donation of 5 signed Bruce and Bill Jackson books, including the coveted We... the Professionals, which were auctioned in the evening, bringing a substantial amount of money to the industry charities. They were all snapped up by the same vehicle recovery operator, who now possesses an important piece of recovery history on their bookshelf.

Traditionally the Bill Jackson award is presented in the afternoon, but in light of Bruce’s visit all the way from Canada, it seemed ﬁtting to hold back presenting the award until the evening event. Bruce Jackson presented The Bill Jackson award to Manchett’s Rescue and Recovery for another well completed and documented job. The evening event also saw the presentation of the Gold Truck Award. The recipient was recognised for the outstanding service he provides for industry, more often than not, without ﬁnancial reward or selfpromotion. The well-deserved recipient was none other than Professional Recovery resident writer, Derek Firminger. Retired from being a VRO Derek could easily have walked away from the industry but he is often heard to say, he wants to give back to the industry that served him well in years gone by. The luck of the Irish shone through not only as many rafﬂe prizes were won by them, but the eventual winner of the Jack Ovenden Award was announced and awarded by George Phillip from the AA to Maeve O’Sullivan from SOS Recovery – Maeve and members of her family are pictured later in this magazine. A pure coincidence but highlighted on the day, 8 March was also International Women’s Day.

A signiﬁcant amount was raised for both AVRO Benevolent Fund and the Recovery Industry

Support Charity (RISC). Both Andy Lambert representing RISC and Jeff Bungey from AVRO Ben were in attendance on the night, to witness the support of those in rescue and recovery to both charities.

A quick witted, funny comedian, mind boggling table magic and an energetic party band covered off the entertainment and the celebrations continued in the bar until the early hours. The 2025 Gala Dinner was a resounding success.

The IVR can’t take all the credit, the sponsors have become synonymous with the Gala Dinner it has become an industry wide event and so the Institute of Vehicle Recovery would like to thank all those who sponsored and supported it in 2025. It would also like to thank those within the IVR who pulled it altogether, they know who they are - no matter their role.

IT’S THAT “GOLD TRUCK” AGAIN

- Standing alongside some industry legends

It was only two issues ago I was writing about the “Gold Truck Award” I referred to it as one of the most prestigious awards our great recovery industry has to offer.

Little did I know just what was

Well, this year held the biggest surprise of all, at the 2025 gala dinner, as this year it was to be presented to me, the most

prestigious award, presented to me in recognition of the work I have done and continue to do for the recovery industry.

But also, it has given me and my family a good life, and continues to do so, so in my mind it’s only right to give back in some way, and me volunteering my time and helping with my knowledge and industry experience satisfies me immensely, and like it or not, I’ve not finished yet.

That followed with, do you want to say a few words, I said yes, but must admit the emotion got the better of me, so it was literally just a few words and apart from a thank you, I said that someone else would have to write the edit about the recipient of the award this year.

I never like writing stuff that includes me, and when I’m reporting on the work we do as PROF or ERRI, you will notice I rarely quote my name, but here I am writing about myself. The only reason I am is because once I got the award home and put it pride of place in my ofﬁce, I started to read the rollcall of names and thought just how fortunate and grateful I am to have my name alongside theirs, at the same time remembering I’m only the custodian of this fantastic piece of engineering for the year 2025.

In my simple way of thanking those responsible for nominating me for this recognition, I thought I could mention a few of those names that received this award before me, and a little bit about what they did for the industry, and I guess what they stand for.

Now that was first awarded back in 1995 the award was known as the

Green Flag Award, donated to the IVR as an annual award to be presented by the Institute of Vehicle Recovery (IVR) as a Lifetime Achievement Award.

As it was donated by Green Flag I thought, let’s have a bit of history lesson and find out what exactly was the reason for the award, how did it come about and why, so I thought what better than a call to the man himself, Brian Hagan, to my

“The concept ﬁrst came about as an idea from me, we were at the IVR annual dinner, in those days it was held at the Post House Hotel Heathrow, it was in the very early days I think March time and about 1993 or maybe 1994.”

“I remember thinking at the time AVRO have their truck show AVRO EX, and at the dinner have trophies galore, in fact in those days they had an award for just turning up, more cups and shields than you could ever imagine, so I thought the IVR could use a really nice trophy, not a cup or a shield, No something that represented the industry properly, and not something based on CommercialHeavy Recovery, something for everyone associated with the industry, then it wouldn’t matter how you were associated with the industry, what I mean is you wouldn’t have to be an operator to receive it, and to make it an annual award, the actual criteria could be decided by others, that didn’t matter to me.”

“At the time Tommy Ash had just got a new crew cab transporter from MSM. in Kirkcaldy Fife he sent me a photograph of it, which was excellent, but Colin wanted dimensions for everything, so I called Tom Bowen from MSM and explained what I was doing, and he sent me the original drawings which I passed on to Collin, drama over. Colin was now able to scale from the drawings and make a perfect match.”

The award was presented year on year from 1996 right up to 2010, with a string of worthy candidates, I’ll list a few names you will recognise, 1995 – Dave Smith, 1996 – Brian Drury , AVRO Council Member for more years than records were kept, he would have been part of the AVRO council that ﬁrst set up the Institute (IVR) in the knowledge that the industry need an Institute to concentrate its time and efforts on training and standards. He is also an International Recovery Hall of Fame member, recognised for his outstanding industry representation.

1997 Peter Martin - Now Peter has always been a very big IVR supporter, in fact he was Chairman from 1991 to 1996 another one of the industry pioneers setting standards and training, and although he is now retired, he still ﬁnds time to look after the training and ISO for a couple of his longest standing customers.

To my astonishment I was the recipient of the trophy back in 2002, It was such an honour to receive it, I really felt from my heart the gratitude to have been nominated, and at the time it made me reﬂect on why I commissioned it in the ﬁrst place...

“Anyway, as it happens Pat knew of a guy who made trophies for every sport going, Colin was his name, so I got his phone number and went to see him, I explained at length what I was trying to achieve and explained there was no rush he had a year to complete it in, and not to worry about the cost.”

“He took the task very seriously, he confessed to know absolutely nothing about recovery, in fact he said he had never seen a recovery vehicle, so I took him to see Colin Exley at Stoneywood Motors, Colin had a great ﬂeet, I knew I could rely on him to help and help he did, he let

1998 - Bill Diegutis - To the older AA operators the name will be very familiar, I think his title at the AA was Garaging Contracts Manager, I may have that wrong but that doesn’t matter, he was a huge supporter of the industry, a hard task master, and the man to battle with for your AA areas and contract terms. Aside from his role at the AA, his support for the industry was massive, and was another who played a key role in the Life on The Edge ﬁlms that stay so relevant today.

Tom Johnson - Some might say the Recovery Industry’s Godfather, but deﬁnitely the Godfather of LV Britannia, formally Britannia Rescue, past Trustee and Chairman of RISC, a ﬁgure our industry has sadly missed. 2010 Michael Donley - Michael working as the internal trainer at Alliance Global Assistance lead the way with EV training, instrumental in the research of everything EV and hybrid recovery related, he had the foresight to create training dedicated to both EV and recovery, something so evident today and that training still exists today as a basis within the industry courses administered by the IVR.

The industry felt so let-down by Green Flag that the Green Flag Gold Truck Award came out of circulation and went into hibernation, and understandably so.

Those seven years passed, and Andy Lambert approached the IVR and asked if RISC could use the award in recognition for the support given to RISC.

funds for RISC to fund the Campaign for Safer Roadside Rescue and Recovery (CSRRR).”

There’s an unfortunate gap again

and Covid took hold of the country, but in 2022 the IVR brought the trophy back into circulation and strangely it was presented to the recovery industry as a whole, sounds a bit crazy, but when you consider how the industry reacted to the pandemic and embraced all the challenges thrown at it, as an essential service the whole industry was an absolute credit, from essential key worker cards, COVID protocols produced by the IVR to special working arrangements. I know the NHS were recognised with streets of people on their doorsteps clapping for the NHS on a Thursday evening (and rightly so) well the recovery

Time really does ﬂy when you’re having fun. Dubai, Stratford, Cheltenham, Wembley all crammed into one long Grand Prix circuit which came to an end last Tuesday when I ﬁnally got home after nearly three weeks.

Now comes the NPCC National Police Chiefs Conference, then all roads lead to Automechanika.

This year I respectfully declined the kind invitation to present at this year’s conference as believe it or not, I am trying to step away from front line of recovery industry politics and concentrate on other things, primarily Automechanika.

However, Terry Hunt and the NPCC in particular, have been especially supportive of PROF, and I will continue to reciprocate that support in any way

possible now and in the future!

So, I will be attending the conference and will endeavour to keep my gob shut. I am hopeful that an announcement will be made regarding a statutory fees update.

PROF has contributed considerable input and evidence to the Home Ofﬁce for review, on both Stat Fees and a review of electric vehicles statutory removals and storage. I will be keen to hear Tracey Caitlin’s Home Ofﬁce 2025 Stat Fee review update.

Having only recently returned from a break, PROF have been asked to interact regarding the new or recently implemented DVSA implemented legislation.

In a very small nutshell, I asked Derek Firminger to drag himself away from his

Gold Truck Award and assist, well carry out, a subject analysis, which he has done quite admirably.

He’s obviously looking for another award, it’s not healthy sleeping with two awards mate!

I have combined Dereks analysis with a strongly worded letter from PROF to all of the relevant government stakeholders, calling for:

● An impact assessment across the board.

● Inter departmental government consultation! It’s obvious there has been none.

● A grace period of enforcement.

● Recovery industry consultation.

● Meeting with DVSA, and stakeholders to discuss the subject.

I will inform you of any outcomes unless the DVSA do it ﬁrst!

Automechanika 2025

Returning to my favourite current obsession Automechanika. Some of you will have seen my Automechanika presentation at the recent IVR AGM.

Hopefully I got my message across that Automechanika is not about PROF, it’s about us presenting the recovery industry to the automotive industry and

other stakeholders.

PROF has commissioned a video that can shop window a national network of specialist recovery operators vehicles and equipment.
