VINTAGE ROLLS RECOVERED

An “Irreplaceable” 100-year-old Rolls-Royce stolen from a hotel car park last month has been found following a three-day investigation by Essex Police The 1920 Rolls-Royce 40/50 ‘Silver Ghost’ Open Tourer, valued at over £300,000, was found by the force’s Thurrock Neighbourhood Policing Team on June 29

The car, owned by Bryan Fitton, was stolen together with a six-wheeled trailer from Orsett Hall Hotel near Tilbury Docks during the early hours of June 26

Responding to a tip-off, the Thurrock NPT headed to a yard in the Tilbury area, armed with a warrant, and found the vehicle inside an outbuilding, still intact and sitting on top of the stolen trailer

Mr Fitton described the support received from the public as “unbelievable ” He has regularly driven the car around Europe over the last 25 years and was on the cusp of another “I was taking my vintage RollsRoyce Silver Ghost to Helsinki,” he explained “The route included touring Finland, Sweden, Latvia and Estonia before returning to the UK at the end of the month ”

Sergeant Curtis Price, Thurrock NPT said: “Thanks to our swift response, we were able to locate and recover

the stolen vehicle safely It’s always a positive outcome when we can return property to its rightful owner and prevent further criminal use

“Our focus now is to continue our investigation and to secure all evidence that will help us find out who was responsible for stealing this irreplaceable car ”

Theseincludeda Vincentlightbox at£1200,and aLucasenamel signfor£1500.

TheLakelandMotorMuseumprovidedthestarting offpointfor along-distanceCoasttoCoastdriving routeforownersandmembersofClubTriumph lastmonth.Beautifulconditionsaccompanied39 Triumphsastheysetoutfromthemuseumon an endurancedriveofover450milesfromCumbria to thetownofLowestoftinSuffolk.

Withover30,000exhibitsincludingthe attraction’sowncollectionofTriumphs,themuseum provided afittingstartpoint.Carsinthecollection include a’73Series 4Spitfireand ahighlyoriginal, unrestoredTR5,with aSurreyhardtop.Thevenue’s on-siteCaféAmbiohadalsoprepared aspecial menutoenableswiftservicebeforethedriversgot underwayontheirepicjourney.

Takingupto12hourstocomplete,theroute travelledthroughsomeoftheUK’smostscenic landscapesandnotabledrivingroutesincluding theForestofBowland,theYorkshireDalesand LincolnshireWolds.

Commentingontheevent,museumcurator,Chris Lowesaid:“It’sover40yearssincethelastTriumph wasbuiltanditwasgreattoseesuchafinearrayof modelsbeingusedasthedesignersintended.”

Davidjoinedthe FBHVCin1991 asitscommercialvehicle representative,andfollowing the Federation’sincorporationin 1999,joinedtheboard as LegislationDirector. He retired from therolein2013,aged68, whenhe waspresented witha paintingofhis1951Harringtonbodied AECRegalIII coach (pictured).Hethentookon the roleof Vice-President forthe Federation.

ThenewPininFarina-styledA55 Cambridgeof1959was ashortlivedfour-doorsaloon,replacing itsmoretraditionallystyled predecessor.Itwasoneoffive badge-engineeredFarinamidsizedsaloons,withtheWolseley

15/60goingonsalefirst,andthe Riley4/68,MGMagnetteMk3and MorrisOxfordmakinguptherestof thequintet. AusefulCountryman (estate)versionoftheA55wasalso offeredfrom1960.

Apremiumbadgeandsomeextragoodieswereoncemorethanenoughtoelevate amainstreamcarintoan aspirationalobjectofdesire.Welookbackatsomeofourfavouriteexamples

Onceupon atime,itwasallsomuch simpler.Thesedays,eventhe mostbasicnewcarstend tocomewithairconditioning andvariousgoodies,while sportylabelshavebeendiluted throughrangestomakeitvery difficulttotellanentry-level carapartfromtheexpensive, full-fatone.

Rewind agenerationortwo, however,andsomeone’ssocial standingcouldbepigeon-holedby theamountofequipmenttheircarcould boast –andthatwouldhandilybeindicated bythebadgeontheboot.Manufacturers exploitedthisdesireforhierarchybyadding hithertouncharteredlevelsofluxurytowhat wereotherwiseordinarymainstreamcars, creatingtop-of-the-rangemodelsthatwere posh,butstillmoreobtainableandpractical thantheprestigeGermanmarques.Ifyou had aCortinawiththecovetedGhiabadge andafewbitsofwoodandvelourinside,you wereimmediatelya cutabovethe manwitha mere LorGL.

Thingshavebecome muddiedinrecent years,withmanyofthe best-knownluxurybadges disappearing.Withthatin mind,we’returningbackthe blocktobringyousevenmonikersthatreally meantsomethingwhenitcametoaffirming one’sstatusintheworkcarpark.

EFOREXECUTIVE

Whenitcametotheimportanceofbadge hierarchies,theFordCortina1600Ewas surelythecarthatkickstarteditall.E, ofcourse,stoodfor Executive.Thelabel hadbeenused fortheflagship Zodiacsaloons

since1965andalsoappearedontheCorsair, buthaditsbiggestimpactwiththeCortina –acarthatimmediatelyshottothetop ofthedesirabilitypileforambitiousyoung professionalswhenitwaslaunchedatthe ParisMotorShowin1967.Itemphasised justhow abadgecouldbewhenitcameto carparkkudos,aswellasshowcasingFord’s uncannyknackoflaunchingtherightcarat therighttime.

The1600Edidn’tarrivestraightaway though,withtheMk2rangehavingfirst appeared ayearearlier,in1966.Butcome October1967,the newE satatthetopof themainstreammodelline-up.Intruth, eE wassomethingof amixbetween styles,beingfarsportierthantheother ‘posh’saloonsofthetime.Aswell astheuprated1600GTengine, ithadthechassisstrengthening andupratedsuspensionfromthe Lotusmodelandamattblackgrille, plusa blackrearpanelonlater cars.Insidetherewas aleatherrimmedsportssteeringwheeland fullsix-packinstrumentation.Butyou ogot aplushvinylroofandpainted pinstripestoadd amoreluxuriouslookto theexterior,whiletheinteriorgot aburr walnutwoodgrain-trimmeddashboardand doorcappings,recliningseatsanddeep-pile carpets.Thecombinationofferedbythe 1600Ewassomethingunique,andarguably aheadofitstime.

TheE formulaworkedbrilliantly,with over60,000carssoldin ashortthree-year productionrunthatendedin1970,witha facelifttakingplaceinautumn1968.Aside

fromtheLotus,the1600Ewasconsidereda classiclongbeforetherestoftherange,and mostofitsrivals.

EwouldalsoappearontheMk1Escort. Ittookuntil1973forthe1300Etoappear, butthewaitwasworthwhile.Combining sportinesswithatouchofopulenceonce more,the1300Elookedsmartwithits specialwheeltrims,vinylroofandspot lamps,whileinsideitoffered awalnutveneer dashboardanddoorpanels,clothseatsand extrainstrumentation.Underthebonnet, meanwhile,sattheEscortGT’s72bhp engine,givingthe carahealthyturnofpace. The1300Ewasanexclusivemodelby Fordstandards.ProductionoftheMk1 EscortceasedinDecember1974,bywhich timeatotalof6768two-doorand4022fourdoor1300EshadbeenbuiltinBritain.They soonbecamecollectable,andthesedaysthe modelhassomethingof acultfollowing.

TheE badgewouldalsoreappearonthe Cortina,too,withtheMk32000E abelated attempttoresurrecttheimageoftheiconic 1600E.ReplacingtheGXLrange-topper aspartofthe1973facelift,the Egota plushinteriorfeaturing awoodenfascia, rectangularheadlamps, Ebadgesand avinyl roof.ItwasthemostluxuriousMk3ofall, butwhileit’sa desirablemodelforCortina fans,itdidn’thittheheightsofthe1600E andremainssomewhatnicheincomparison. Thatdidn’tstopFordfromtryingto resurrectthemagicinthelate’80s, however.Wantingtogivethemodela late-lifeboost,ForddulycreatedtheFord Orion1600E.ProductionbeganinOctober 1988,withthe carsstartingoutas a1.6i GhiasbuiltatHalewood,beforebeing shippedinbatchestotheTickfordtohave theirinteriorstrimmedinsoftShadow Greyleather.Youalsogotwoodveneerand smartalloys –justunder1500werebuilt, andraritymeanssurvivorsaresought-after today.

ThefinalcartobegiventhehallowedE badgewasaSierra.TheSapphire2000E wasavailablefromJune1989until1991 andfeaturedtwo-tonemetallicpaint,alloy wheels,thenow-familiarShadowGrey leatherinteriortrimand atripcomputerin additiontoalltheitemsassociatedwiththe up-marketGhiamodels.Italsoreceivedthe new2.0-litreDOHCI4engine,producing 123bhp.Survivorsarethoughttonumber fewerthan30nowthough,withmanyhaving beenturnedintoCosworthreplicas.

GHIA

BeforetheBlueOvalhadanythingtowith it,CarrozzeriaGhiawasprobablymost closelyassociatedwithVW’sprettyKarmann Ghia,launchedin1955.Backthen,the well-establishedItalianstylinghousewas atthepeakofitsinfluenceandhadbeen commissionedtoworkup acoupeversionof theBeetle.

Bythelate’60sthough,Ghiawasowned byDeTomaso,whichcouldn’tmakeit profitable.ItwasdulysoldtoFordin 1970, whichthenacquired acontrollingstakeinDe Tomasothefollowingyear.Thiswouldalso bringVignaleunderitswing –butmoreof thatlater.Anyway,from1974,a longlineof top-of-the-rangeFordmodelswearingthe Ghiabadgecommenced.TheGranadaGhia replacedtheoutgoingGXL,andintheUK,the newGranadaCoupewasonlymadeavailable intopGhiaspec.

Ghiawasnowheavilyinvolvedwiththe designofvariousnewFordmodelsandthe Granadasawtheresults.TheGhia’sdie-cast grilleandheadlampsurroundswereitswork, andsowastheinterior.Thelatterincluded rathertastefulBelgianwoodtrimand Beaumontcloth,andwouldsetthetonefora wholeraftofotherGhiamodelstocome.

TheCapriMk2wasalsoendowedwith aGhiamodelwithin acoupleofmonths ofgoingonsalein1974,andwhenFord launchedtheFiestainEuropein1976,there wasaGhiamodelatthetopoftherange. DeemedbyFordtobethe“firstappearance

ofsuchluxuriouslevelsofequipmentincars ofthisclass,”itarrivedintheUKinearly 1977.TheGhiawasexpensivecomparedto rivals,butyoudidget asunroof,intermittent wipersandevenfancifuloptionslike headlampwashers.

Alsoarrivingin1977wasthenewMk4 Cortina,andagainthetopoftherangemodel wasnowa Ghia,replacingtheold2000E model.Bythemid-1980s,therecipewaswell established.TheFiesta,Escort,Orion,Sierra, andGranadamodelsallhadauniformstyle atthetopoftherange,designatedbythe Ghiabadge.Inmanycases,theyoffereda morecomfortablewaytospendyourmoney thantheincreasinglypopularsportingXR andRSmodels.Duringthisperiod,Ghia alsohadinvolvementwiththeRS200Group Brallycar,designingitsplastic-fibreglass compositebody.

TherewereevenGhia Xmodelsthat offeredmorestandardequipment,onmodels liketheMk2andMk3Granada,Mk5and Mk6Escort,andMk1-Mk3Mondeo.Bythe 1990s,though,woodveneerandchrometrim werenotreallythatfashionable,especially oncarsbeneaththeincreasinglyprevalent Germanprestigeclass.Thelastmodels,like theFocusMk1andMk2Ghia,Mondeosand Galaxiesfromthesameera,werequietly eclipsedby anewandmoresubtleTitanium trimline.In2010,theGhianamewasfinally discontinued,havinglastedlongeston theFiesta –uninterruptedfrom1976to November2008.

Itwasin2004thattheVignalename returned,withtheFocusVignaleconceptcar introducedattheParisMotorShow,though itwouldgointoproductionastheFocus CC,andironicallyitwasPininfarinawhich performedthefinalassembly.Come2013, FordofEuropeannouncedplanstoresurrect theVignalenameasanupscaleluxury sub-brandofFord,andfrom2015thename appearedproperly –firstontheMondeo, thentheEdge,S-Max,FiestaandtheFocus –andwithmorethananechoofGhiaabout it.PuttingtheusuallymoreexpensiveST sportingmodelsaside,Vignalelikewisewent tothetopoftheFordhierarchy,adding specialleatherseats,personalisedservice programmesandfancychromedtrim. However,Ghiastillholds aplaceintheheart ofmanyaBlueOvalfan,havingrepresented thepinnacleoftheFordrangeforover30 years.

DIPLOMAT

WhileFordhadtheGhiatagtomarkout luxurymodels,GeneralMotorsoftenwentfor theBerlinatagtodenotehigher-specification modelsofcarsliketheOpelRekordand Manta.However,we’veoptedtofastforward adecadeortwo,towhenVauxhalloptedto usethelofty-soundingDiplomatforitsrangetopping,non-sportyCarltonandCavalier modelsintheearly’90s.Badgehierarchies werestill abigthingforcompanycarkudos, andthemarketingwasaimeddirectlyat aspiringrepsandtheperceivedstatussucha carcouldgivethem.

TheCarltonDiplomatwasthefirsttobe introducedinOctober1991.Thepurpose wastoprovideamoretax-efficientluxury alternativetotheSenatorandtocompete withtheFordGranadaScorpio.Themajority ofDiplomatswereproducedon2.0iguise, althoughthemuchrarer150bhp2.6itopped therange.Yougotheatedleatherseats, woodveneer,cruisecontroland ahostof othergoodies,butthemodellinewasn’t continuedbytheOmegawhenitreplacedthe Carltonin1994.

TheCavalierDiplomat,meanwhile,arrived inApril1992.Thepre-faceliftversionwas madefor averyshortperiodoftime,and whileitdidn’tsay2.0ionthebootlidasmany would’vewanted,thecolour-codedgrille wouldmeaneveryotherCavalierdriverwould knowthiswasaDiplomatintherear-view mirror.Insidewasthesamemixofleather andwoodastheCarlton,plussmartmultispokealloywheelstosubtlydistinguish theexterior. Afaceliftinautumn1992saw thingsrampedupevenfurtherwiththe availabilityofthe2.5-litreV6engine,which wasofferedalongsidethe2.0-litreunit.While anautomaticgearboxwasstandardforthe Carltonwiththemanualanoption,itwasthe otherwayroundfortheCavalier.

TheDiplomatwouldstayaspartofthe Cavalierrangeuntil1994,whenitwas replacedbythesimilarlyequippedCDX.Now, only ameresevenCavalierDiplomatsare thoughttobelicensed,andjust13Carltons.

VANDENPLAS

MuchlikeGhiaandVignale,VandenPlaswas aseparateentitybeforeitwasboughtout by amainstreammanufacturer.Originally aBelgianfirm,aUKarmwasestablishedin 1913andwouldgoontoestablishitselfas acoachbuildingoutfitbasedinKingsbury, northwestLondon,whichconstructed bodiesforprestigiousmarques.However, toughfinancialtimessawitbecomeowned byAustinfrom1946,andfrom1960BMC launchedVandenPlasas abrandinitsown right,withseveral‘Princess’modelslaunched includingtheADO16-basedPrincess1100, launchedin1963.Thethinkingbehindthis wassimpleyetbrilliant:BMCrecognised thatmanyoldercarbuyersdownsizing from aJaguar,Roverorsimilarmightwant aphysicallysmallercaryetdidn’twantto compromiseoncomfortandtheideaofa lavishlytrimmedsmallcarwassomethingno othermakerofferedatthatpoint.

ThePrincesswasproduceduntil 1974, initiallyin1100formandthenfrom1968in 1300form.Itcouldn’tbeignoredthatthe littlecarwasstillgeneratingover athirdof VandenPlas’sturnover,andsotheAllegrobasedVandenPlas1500waslaunchedasa replacementinthesummerof1974,powered bytheE-Seriesengine.

TheADO16’sprominentfront-endsnout lentitselfwelltobeinggiven aregalgrille, butinthetransitionfromAllegrotoVanden Plas,thestylistswereallowedtochangejust asinglepanel.Naturally,thebonnetpressing waschosen,gaining araisedcentresection whichpermitted aprominentuprightfront grilletobeadded.Youalsogotfoglights positionedunderthefrontbumper,with VandenPlas-brandedhubcapsand astick-on coachline.

Inside,itwas adifferentmatter,withthe luxuryinteriorbeingwheretheVandenPlas

craftsmenwerefreetogivetheirskillsfree rein.Theseats –oratleast,theseatingfaces –weretrimmedwiththesameConnolly hidesusedinthebigVdPlimousineandthe Daimler,alongwithfold-downfrontandrear armrests.Otherdetailsincludeda reading lightforeachrearpassenger, afullycarpeted boot,storagepocketsindoorsandseatbacks andthecrowningglory:thosefold-outpicnic tablesintheseatbacks.

Productionwas acomplicatedaffair involvinguntrimmedAllegrosbeingdriven toVandenPlas’sKingsburyfactoryinWest London,wherenolessthan12inspectors examinedandrectifiedthepaint.That explainswhytheVandenPlascarswere generallybetterpreparedthanthelesser models,butalsoexplainswhyin1979 theKingsburyworkswasdeemedtobe unviableandwasearmarkedforclosure.The rebrandedVandenPlas1.5and1.7models werefinishedatMG’sAbingdonplant,which wouldbeclosedinOctober1980,takingthe VandenPlaswithit.

Butthatwasn’ttheend.TheVandenPlas namere-emergedtowardstheendof1980, asthetop-of-the-rangetrimdesignationfor theRoverSD1.Then,from1982,thelabel wasusedinmuchthesamesenseaswesaw withGhia,as atoptrimlevelforhumbler AustinRovercars.ThisbeganwiththeMetro in1982andincludedthespecialedition VP500,builttocelebratetheproductionof

thehalfmillionthMetroinlate1983.All were black,andfeaturedseatstrimmedinBiscuit leather.Inlate1984theMetroVanden Plas three-doorwasreplacedbyafive-door version.

Bythen,theMaestroVandenPlashadalso joinedtheline-up,using a1.6-litreengine, whiletheMontego,launchedin1984,gotthe 2.0-litreO-Seriesunit. Afuelinjectedversion wentonsalefrom1985,withthecarbversion discontinued ayearlater.Discountingthe sportyMGversions,TheMetro,Maestroand MontegoVdPwereallrange-toppers,with modelsliketheMontegoEFigettingleather trimasstandard.Sadly,theVandenPlas tagwoulddisappearfromallthreemodels in1988,thoughitremainedonthesimilarly plushRover213/216until1989.

Therewas along-wheelbaseRover800 builtbycoachbuilderColemanMilnetoo, whichwasproducedfrom1988-1999,but thatwasn’tquitetheendforVandenPlas. Thetagwasalsousedon along-wheelbase versionoftheRover75in2002,butitwas onlycalledtheVandenPlasfor amatterof months.ItremainsthelastcarsoldintheUK towearthename,butitwasusedonexportmarketJaguarsuntil2009.

PALLAS

BeforeFordcouldtakethewrapsoffitsE badges,Citroënaddedanewluxurymodelto thebrilliantDSrange.TheDSPallas,named afterGreekgoddessPallas Athena,was introducedin1964attheParisMotorShow andfeaturedequipmentlevelsneverbefore seenon aFrenchproductioncar.Exteriorwise,thereweredistinctivenewrubbing strips,hubcaps,specialrearlightswith chrometrim,andextradrivinglights. Inside,theseatswerethicker,andleather upholsterywasavailableasanoption.Body

colourswerethesameastheotherDS models,butthePallaswasalsoavailable exclusivelywithmetallicpaint –ata time whensuchfinisheswereintheirinfancy.In theUK,thePallascost aformidable£1,9773s 9d.However,youevengotanauxiliaryheater fortherearpassengers.The1965UKlaunch ofthePallascoincidedwiththeintroduction ofthenew2175ccengine,thuscreatingthe DS21,butDS19,DS20andDS23version werealsomadeavailable.

ThePallastrim wasalsoappliedtothe revolutionaryGS,arrivingin1975 –five yearsafter themodelfirstwentonsale.The plushermodel couldbedistinguishedbyits full-sizewheeltrims,rubbingstripsandnicer interior,butwhileothermodels couldbe hadasanestate,thePallaswassaloon-only. WhenthehatchbackGSAtookoverfrom the GSfrom1979,thePallasremainedafixture oftherange.

TheDS’sreplacement,theCX,could similarlyboast aPallasmodelasits range-topper whenunveiledin1974. However,itwassomewhatusurpedby thelong-wheelbasePrestige,whichjoined proceedingsin1975. Alarger-engineCX 2200PallaswentonsaleintheUKin1976, whichboastedtheusualrefinementsandwas well-receivedthankstoitspowersteering. There wasa2400versionfrom1981 too,and lateradiesel.Sadly,theCXwastobethelast Pallasmodel,oratleastitwasuntil2024, whenitappearedas amodelnameon theDS AutomobilesDS4.

Baccara, anameevokingtheluxuryof exclusivecasinos,wasappliedtoseveral Renaultsduringthelate1980sandearly ’90s.Modelsincludedthe19,21,25,Clio, LagunaandSafrane,butitallbeganin 1988,withtheR5‘Supercinq’Baccara. BasedontheGTX,itstoodoutwithits neatpresentation,powersteering,electric windows,centrallocking,alloywheels,wood veneersandConnollybeigeleather. Abeige fauxleathercover,matchingtheseats,was alsoattachedundertherearparcelshelf,so thatthedynamicyoungexecutivecouldstore hisjacketwithoutcreasingit.

FellowFrenchfirmPeugeotalsotried itshandata luxuryversionofasupermini, launchingthe205Gentry.Producedfrom 1991-1994,itwasonlyavailableas athreedoorandcameinSorrentoGreenorAztec Goldmetallic.Yougotleatherseatsinside, plusthickcarpetsandwoodinserts,while underthebonnetwas a1.9-litreengine,albeit detunedto105bhpandoftenmatedtoan automaticgearbox.Itwasn’tassuccessfulas theMonaco/Baccarathough,andonly600 weresenttotheUK.Findonenowandyou’ll havequitethecollectibleonyourhands.

VOGUE

Fewwouldthinkof aRangeRoverasa humbleeverymanmodelintheveinofmost oftheothercarsmentionedhere,butthe originalwasfarmoreutilitarianthantoday’s versions,andforthatreasonwefeelits worthyofabriefmentionhere.

TosaytheAlfettaGTisperfect wouldbe wrong –theawkward drivingpositionanddelicate gearchangeareunavoidablequirks, itapparentlystrugglestodo25mpg ifyoudriveithard,andI’dplacea fairlycomfortablebetthatitwon’t beasreliableas acontemporary MercedesorBMWifusedregularly. Yet,thisAlfa’scharacterand charmisundeniable,andIhada sizeableandconstantsmileonmy facewhiledrivingit.Andforwhat

it’sworth,anhourofenthusiastic drivingoncountryroadsandin townpresentednoissue forthis 46-year-oldItalian,withoutso

muchas arisingtemperature gauge,letaloneanymaladies. Thisonehadsoldaswewentto press,butthedealeriswellknown

forhavinginterestingalternative stock,oryou couldhuntout amore readilyavailableGTV2000or GTV6.

TheGTS wasa specialUK-only editionofthe AlfettaGT, produced from1979-1980, with anestimated productionrunofjust50units.Basedon thestandardGT, theGTS receivedseveraldistinctive upgradesthat setitapart. Theseincluded velour-trimmedseats, chromebeautyringsonthe wheels, arear windscreen wiper,Hella foglights, electric windows, and aslidingsunroof.

Theexteriorgot exclusiveGTS graphics,completing thisdressed-upbasemodel.Despiteits rarity and unique features, theGTS remainslargely unknown,andourtestcarisoneofonlytwo survivors. Themodel’s limitedproduction, coupled with itsbespoke touches,makesit ahighlycollectibleandsignificantpieceof Alfa Romeohistory in Britain. TheselectionoftastefuladornmentsmarktheGTSasideassomethingalittle different from thestandardAlfettaGT1600.

In1980,theGT wasrestyled with newtaillights, grey plasticbumpers, C-pillar ventsandsideskirts,with allbrightstainlesssteelsave forthe Alfa Romeotriangular grillechanged to mattblack. The1.6-litre version wasdiscontinuedand theAlfettaGTV became knownsimply as Alfa RomeoGTV2.0.Laterin thesame year, theGTV 62.5,aversionof theGTV with theSOHC2.5-litreV6engine from theAlfaRomeo Alfa 6luxury saloon,was released.

JustbeforetheFrankfurt MotorShowin1995,Audi revealeditsvisionofthe future.TheTTConceptwas photographedinside agiantturbine forthefull‘visionoftomorrow’–butlittledidweknowthatitwas goingtobe aproductionreality.

DesignedbyAmericanduo FreemanThomasand JMaysat theVolkswagenGroupDesign CentreinCalifornia,theTTwasa strikingconceptthatwonattention inthemedia,butthenotionof aproductionversionwasn’ton anyone’sradar.Atleastnotuntil 1996,whenAudifollowedupthe coupéwith aTTRoadsterconcept attheTokyoShow.TheGerman gianthadbeenbusybehindthe scenes.

By1997,thecatwasoutof thebagandthefollowingyear,a productionTT(coupéfirst)was revealed,togoonsalein1998.It wastruetotheconceptintermsof styling,thoughthewheelbasewas shortertoallowittobebuiltonthe GolfMk 4platform.

Atlaunch,therewasoneengine

–VW’s1.8-litreturbochargedpetrol developing180or 225PS(178or 222bhp).Theplatformwasthatof theGolf4MOTION,withstandard all-wheeldriveallowingAuditouse itsfamous‘quattro’moniker. WhentheTTwasintroducedin 1998itwaspraisedforitsdesign. Buttherewas amajorPRcrisisfor Audiinthoseearlydays,aswithin sixmonthsofgoingonsaletheTT hadbeentakenoffsaleforurgent reengineeringfollowingconcerns aboutstability.Thehandlingissues werediscoveredinGermanywhen drivingathighspeedsonthe Autobahn.Theproblemsdeveloped whendriversbegantoslowandat thesametimeturntogetontothe exitramp.Theroundeddesignof thereardidn’tgivetheair afixed

releasepoint,whichgavetheTTa degreeofinstabilityandcausedthe reartowobble.Whenthewobble wascombinedwithhigh-speed brakingandcornering,itcouldno longersustainsufficientreargrip andwouldspin. Itresultedin22accidents wheretheTTspunaround.One TTdriverwaskilledona notorious high-speedautobahncurve.A secondfatalityoccurredtoan unbeltedrearpassenger.Audi engineerscontinuedtodefend thechassissettings,whilequietly acknowledgingthat arearspoiler toreduceliftwouldhelptherear axle –somethingthatwasinitially resistedbythecar’sstylingteam. Audisaidthepurposewasto increaseundersteer,reducelift-off oversteer,andimprovestability. TheTTalsogotmodifiedfront controlarms,whiletheshockers weremadestifferincompression andsofterinreboundtoreduce pitchmotionandweighttransfer fromreartofrontwhenbraking. ESPwasstandardisedtoo. ThemovedelayedtheUKlaunch, anditwouldbelate1999bythe timeTTsweresoldhere,orearly 2000beforeyoucouldbuyonein right-hand-drive,bywhichtimethe rangehadevolvedtoincludetheTT

Roadster –aprettysofttop. Itwasaninstanthitandcame with awaitinglistfromtheoff, meaningtheline-updidn’tneed muchadjustment.In2002,when capacityallowed,anentry-level front-driveTTwasintroduced with a150bhpversionofthe1.8T, whilein2003Audiintroduced theultimateTT –the3.2V6, whichwouldalsobe thefirstAudi modeltofeatureDSGdual-clutch transmission.In2005wealsogot theSport,usinga 237bhpversion ofthefamiliar1.8-litreturbounit. DevelopedbyAudi’sownsports division,quattroGmbH,itwas ratherspecial,andcouldalsoboast upratedsuspensionandunique wheels,plusRecarobucketsin thefrontandnoseatsintherear, makingitthemostdesirableMk1 TTofall.

Thefirst-genTTremainedon saleuntil2006;andisrapidly gaininginterestfromthosewho recogniseitsinfluenceasadesign classic.Rustisseldomanissue (thoughbubblyreararchesaren’t uncommon),butblockeddrains onRoadsterscanmeansoaked carpets.Meanwhile,VW’s20-valve engineis asolidunit,buttheV6 carscanhaveissueswiththeir DSGgearboxeswherefitted.The

AudiTTisalsowellknownforthe instrumentdisplaypanelsfailing, butrepairisusuallyunder£200. Thebestthingisprice.Sport aside,you’llstruggletosee aTT break£10,000,and agood180can besnappedupfor£2500orless. Partssupplyisstrong,andyou’llbe gettinga carthatstilllooksthepart today.

The overwhelming majority of car sellers and buyers are honest. However as with everything else in life, there’s a tiny percentage that aren’t. However it’s dead-easy to protect yourself from fraudsters by using a bit of common-sense...

ADVICE FOR SELLERS

● Stay safe! Don’t give a buyer your address until you know they are definitely coming to view. Better still, give them the general location only at first and ask them to phone for the full address once they are close.

● Always arrange a specific time for viewings – don’t accept vague ‘I may come sometime today’ type arrangements.

● Serious buyers will want to examine the car fully – that’s fine and you should be prepared to answer fully and honestly any questions a buyer may have about the car. Be wary though if they try to steer the conversation towards more general matters concerning you and your family. Similarly, while a genuine enthusiast will probably be interested in your other cars, so will a would-be burglar.

● Test drives need to be handled with care – on the one hand it’s perfectly reasonable for a serious buyer to want to drive a car before buying, but you need to remain in control. Make sure they are insured to drive your car too, bearing in mind that ‘driving other cars’ clauses on insurance policies normally cover only third-party risks, not damage to your car.

● Ensure you drive your car first to demonstrate controls (etc.) and then, once you are at a suitable place for the buyer to drive, get out, taking the keys with you, and hand them back only once you are back in the car.

● Do not accept a personal cheque from someone you do not know; there is no longer any guaranteed clearance time, and a cheque can now ‘bounce’ at any time – even weeks after it’s been banked – if it’s discovered to be forged.

● Don’t get involved in any complex arrangements involving giving ‘change’ for a payment that’s more than your asking price, especially involving overseas buyers or transfers using methods such as Western Union – these are almost always fraudulent.

● Be very wary indeed of anyone calling and trying to sell your advertisement in another publication. Such publications don’t always exist, and claimed distribution figures will often be vastly exaggerated. Calls are also often recorded as ‘evidence’ of a binding contract.

● Above all, trust your instincts! If something seems dodgy or not quite right to you, then there’s a good chance you’re right.

ADVICE FOR BUYERS

● Start by asking ‘is the car for sale?’ If the seller is a trader pretending to sell privately, they will need to ask you ‘which one?’

● Be suspicious of a car that seems cheaper than it should be; if something seems too good to be true then it probably is.

● Be wary of sellers who can only be contacted via a mobile phone or an easy to obtain email address such as hotmail or gmail. They may ‘disappear’ once they have your money.

● Ask lots of specific questions about specific model weaknesses such as “is there any rust around the headlights”, and listen carefully to the answers; do they actually have the car?

● Never, ever send anyone money for a car that you have not seen. Crooks sometimes advertise cars that don’t exist solely to collect deposits from would-be buyers.

● If you’re suspicious that someone is trying to ‘sell’ a car they do not own, ask them to email or send you a photograph of a specific parts that they will not be able to provide without having access to the car. This isn’t 100 per cent foolproof – a fraudster may have access to a car he doesn’t own – but it can help.

● Always view the car at the seller’s home address. If they want to meet you in a car park or bring the car to you they may be trying to prevent you finding them again.

● Does the name and address on the V5C match the sellers name and address? If not, why not?

● Always check the chassis number/Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the registration document matches that on the car. A proper data check is also essential to avoid buying a car that’s stolen or an undisclosed insurance write-off.

● No registration document? Don’t accept excuses, don’t buy the car!
