Newman IT, is a technology company based out of Kalamazoo, Michigan. They are planning to relocate to a new building to accommadate its growing staff. The space is mainly used by it’s employees but will have clients visit the office occasionally. Spaces requred include desk space for it’s 14 employees and 3 executives. A conference area is needed for meetings as well as two breakaway spaces for smaller gatherings. Reception, break area, and bike storage are also required.

The existing space is located on the third floor -allowing acces from an elevator on the south side of the building and stair access from the north.

The owner would like to keep the environment in mind throughout the process, picking sustainable solutions along the way.

Concept & FF&E 07

“Not your typical office design� was the main driving force behind the concept. Whimsical aspects were drawn in to give the space a playful yet professional feel. Foliage is used through out the space in the Babylon light fixtures, in the custon built walnut wood planters, and located on high ledges to help excentuate the ceiling height changes. Unique bird pendants are also seen through out the office space to assist with drawing the eye up -making the space appear larger. Glass wall panels are utilized in the space to help maximize the limited natural light. Acoustical panels are placed to help anchor areas where limited sound travel is important.

Ergonomic design was kept in mind through out the design to make the users as comfortable as possible during long work days. Stand to sit desks can be found at every work station along with ceiling and desk lighting so the user has complete control of light output -avoiding eye strain.

About the Project

The Korvers are a conservative family of four from Puebla, Mexico. They are relocating to a Chicago, IL suburb to find a home that has traditional eclectic mexican design mixed with mordern american amenities and features. The home must be able to grow with the family, as they plan to reside here long term to raise their two children. The design must be accessible for Mrs. Korver’s progression of Multiple Sclerosis. The home needs an open layout that allows the family to gather and entertain, as well as a studio space that inspires creativity for Mrs. Korver’s future business.

Below the two story house is commercial shop space where Mrs. Korver will be selling her hand painted talavera tiles.

Mexican talavera tiles are one of the most predominant characterists of colonial mexican cities, in particular the city of Puebla. There’s only 6 permitted colors that authentic talavera tiles can be painted -four of those colors are used through out the space (blue, green, orange, and yellow.) Much like the base of these tiles, natural colors act as the canvas for this primary color scheme to play on. Arches and natural wood, another characteristic of Colonial Mexican style is pulled together with mordern american amenities to give the Kover’s their familiar yet updated home.

About the Project

For this project presented by Steelcase, students were asked to design the NEXT HUB, a small-scale extension of the fictional NEXT University based in Washington DC. The 10,000 square foot space would be on the top two floors of a boutique building. It’s intended to be a place for online students to gather, and a space for providing educational opportunities for adults with small children or those already in the workforce. I was placed in a group with three other students to collaborate this project.

Abstract was the concept for our Next Hub education center. The goal was to not mimic the status quo of a typical educational building. With the use of fun primary colors, unique placement of walls, and atypical furniture designs and patterns, the space becomes a fun yet inspirational place to further education and achieve goals.

Thesis Residents in senior living homes lack opportunities to be individualized and have purpose, especially in pandemic and even minor epidemics. By building a community where seniors have choice, even in these scenarios, residents will have more quality in life than just quality.

Illistrator: Iconography

This project required taking a piece of furniture we admire and turning it into an icon through Adobe Illistrator. I chose Herman Millers Crosshatch chair. The chair is simplistic yet inventive -parachute cords are integral part of it’s design. Keeping this in mind i kept the chair simplistic color wise while still accentuating the parachute cords.

Herman Miller Simple yet Inventive

Parachute cords, a common industrial product, are an integral part of the chair’s design. Pulled down, the cords create a system of internal tension and supply the necessary back support, creating the feeling of being enclosed in a comforting, protective nest.

Thie next step was to utilize the icon views to create a poster that both depicts the selected furniture piece and captures it’s essence through visual queuing. I kept branding continuity -so they can function together as a branded package and operate independently as products designed for differing scales of visual experience.

Changing the chairs cushions to match the Herman Miller Logo was the first thing I did. This helps draw the eye to the furniture pieces and moves your eye around the poster. The rails and cords were made black to really contrast against the red. I added a simple crosshatch pattern where i placed “crosshatch” to tie in the whole poster to the over all aesthetic of the crosshatch lounge chair.

Using a minimum of materials in a maximally inventive way, the Crosshatch Chair and Ottoman employ both handcraft and technology to achieve alluringly refined results.

Design a Luminaire: Kirigami

This project was led off by understanding what the assigned word perforated meant. Perforation is when paper or another material has a series of holes in it, often so that it will tear easily or allow light/air to enter. I decided paper would be a great medium to work with on this project. Kirigami is a a japanese method of working with paper, itmeans to cut paper.

This is the method i used. After attemptimg the many different tutorials, i adjusted one -sizing it up, adding more layers, and poking small perforations where the paper joins. The result is a diffused indirect ambient light. The fixture is decorative, making the light the fixture creates and the piece itself the focal points. I used a 3500K bulb to allow for a warm-white glow as it’s placed it the corner of a room.

How to make it First, I slit four lines on each side of the paper, opposite of each other.

Next, i folded the paper over and connected the two slits closest to the center.

Last, i took the second slit from the middle and connected it with the second unit.
