W

elcome to the Fall 2021 issue of College Administrator.

As campuses across the province settle in for semesters of blended learning in a landscape that looks both the same and very different than years past, we take a look at The Future of Work: how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we teach, learn, and plan in uncertain times.

Colleges in Ontario have always been on the leading edge of innovation, with imaginative people leading the charge in classrooms and governing behind the scenes to make postsecondary education a worthwhile and successful experience for students.

But COVID-19 showed us how much more room there really is to change how we do things.

In Future World, we asked administrators: what were some of the surprises experienced by campuses around the province over the last 18 months? What inspired imagination? What innovations were realized that are now being built into the educational fabric as we move through a more sophomoric phase of this global pandemic?

Hybrid work models are now commonplace on many campuses, and we discuss how the new standard brings about both challenges and freedoms.

As members of OCASA, we can face the future together: with common goals, a shared vision, and a healthy curiosity about what is to come.

With the future not quite as easy to predict, we learn that long-term, wide-reaching strategic plans are becoming a thing of the past.

Overall, there is a tentative excitement about the future of work and how can it can even further enrich the college experience for everyone in the field.

Breaking Out of the Box explores how virtual learning began as grids of faces on screens – but has become imaginative as faculty find inventive ways to keep students engaged.

Safety Net looks at how mental health supports have evolved over the last 18 months. Managing the realities of burnout for faculty and staff and stress of uncertainty for students as we embark on a new school year has been a big priority for college administrators.

Finally, with our second annual Leaders and Innovators Conference well underway, we hope you are finding our own virtual learning environment inspiring and worthwhile!

From September 2021 to June 2022, we will host a series of online conference events and professional development opportunities, including two new segments and a Keynote from Dr. David Weiss, best-selling author and leadership consultant, entitled Coaching for Success.

We plan to return with a face-to-face conference in the fall of 2022 in lovely Niagara Falls. More details to come, so please stay tuned.

ienvenue au numéro d’automne 2021 de College Administrator.

Alors que les campus de la province entament des semestres d’apprentissage mixte dans un paysage à la fois similaire et très différent de celui des années passées, nous nous penchons sur L’avenir du travail : comment la pandémie de la COVID-19 a changé la façon dont nous enseignons, apprenons et planifions en période d’incertitude.

Les collèges de l’Ontario ont toujours été à la fine pointe de l’innovation, avec des personnes imaginatives menant la charge dans les salles de classe et gouvernant dans les coulisses pour faire de l’éducation postsecondaire une expérience valable et réussie pour la clientèle étudiante.

Mais la COVID-19 nous a montré à quel point il est possible de changer notre façon de faire les choses.

Dans Le monde de demain (Future World), nous avons demandé aux administrateurs les questions suivantes : quelles ont été certaines des surprises vécues par les campus collégiaux de la province au cours de 18 derniers mois? Quelle est la source de cette créativité? Quelles sont les innovations qui ont été réalisées et qui sont maintenant intégrées dans le tissu éducatif alors que nous traversons une phase plus avancée de cette pandémie mondiale?

Les modèles de travail hybrides sont désormais monnaie courante sur de nombreux campus, et nous discutons de la façon dont la nouvelle norme entraîne à la fois des défis et des libertés.

De septembre 2021 à juin 2022, nous offrirons une série de conférences et de possibilités de perfectionnement professionnel en ligne, dont deux nouveaux thèmes et la conférence principale intitulée Coaching for Success présentée par David Weiss, Ph.D, auteur à succès et consultant en leadership.

Le thème Breaking Out of the Box (Sortir des sentiers battus) explore la façon dont l’apprentissage virtuel a commencé par des grilles de visages sur des écrans, mais est devenu créatif alors que les professeurs trouvent des moyens inventifs de maintenir l’intérêt des étudiants.

Le thème Safety Net (Filet de sécurité) se penche sur l’évolution du soutien en matière de santé mentale au cours des 18 derniers mois.

La gestion des réalités de l’épuisement professionnel pour le corps professoral et les membres du personnel et du stress de l’incertitude pour les étudiants à l’aube d’une nouvelle année scolaire a été une grande priorité pour les administrateurs des collèges.

Enfin, avec notre deuxième conférence annuelle des Leaders et innovateurs bien entamée, nous espérons que vous trouvez notre propre environnement d’apprentissage virtuel inspirant et intéressant!

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

W

hen civil rights leader Malcolm X uttered these words in 1964, he couldn’t have predicted how relevant they would be more than 50 years later in the midst of a global pandemic.

While educators and administrators definitely agree education creates opportunities for the future – HOW we are preparing schools, staff, and students for that future has taken on new meaning after the foundation shifted under our feet nearly two years ago.

“There’s the short-term future and the long-term future,” said Alison Horton, Vice President, Academic at Mohawk College. “There’s how we approach it while we’re still in the pandemic and still in a fairly fluid and dynamic situation – and then, what is the long-term view?”

Colleges transitioned to virtual along with the rest of the world when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in early 2020. Since then, educational institutions are slowly opening up again – bringing with them innovations like online and hybrid learning, students and faculty support, and balanced and cautious strategic planning.

Linda Franklin, President and CEO of Colleges Ontario, which represents the province’s 24 public colleges, said a strong network of peer support helped navigate challenges in those early days. www.ocasa.on.ca | College Administrator

“I think colleges surprised themselves quite frankly with how quickly they were able to pivot online. We found our levels of engagement were really high. People were very eager to participate and engage,” she said. “We were meeting daily with the presidents, then once a week.

Those early meetings were all about, ‘How do we do this together?

Do we have any best practices? Who knows about online? What are we doing about mental health resources?’”

“They became action plans . . . because nobody had a choice.”

Now, Franklin said, the question for colleges has become: “What do we adopt permanently, and what do we leave behind?”

From an academic point of view, Horton said she’s pleased faculty and staff at Mohawk Linda College pushed each other to incorporate new Franklin technologies and inventive learning methods in their day-to-day educational experience.

Simulation, lightboard technology, virtual escape rooms, and virtual role-playing scenarios are just some creative ideas to come out of the pandemic that will remain Mohawk’s campuses as the crisis itself settles out.

“What we’ve seen is faculty embrace this opportunity to a large extent – faculty challenging themselves to adapt to the circumstances and ensure our students are still receiving a quality experience they had come to expect from us,” said Horton, adding Mohawk’s high level of expertise and infrastructure helped to facilitate the transition to a more virtual environment.

“It was still challenging – that is absolutely true – but we were able to make those adjustments based on our experience.”

Horton points to the digital evolution of student services: counselling, tutoring, tool kits to support remote learning, studying assistance, and health and wellness as another modernization she’s pleased to see continue into the future.

“(The pandemic) increased access in certain ways to those services,” Horton said. “This year, we ran orientation both for new and returning students in that virtual environment, and we had great engagement.”

“It really has been a positive outcome to see those innovations come through.”

Centennial College took note of stresses over the last 18 months and created a program where students could share their thoughts with each other in an informal environment, said Neil Buddel, Vice President, Student Success.

For staff, the college created access to funding to make sure their needs were taken care of, too.

“Students presented needs related to health vulnerabilities, lost work, Zoom fatigue, sleep disruption, reduced social interaction, and concerns about academic performance related to online study,” Buddel said. “A peer-to-peer listener program was launched in response to students’ preference for support from other students, rather than seek out formal services.

“For staff, a wellness campaign was launched with a myriad of resources, including financial resources to connect with off-campus/ virtual wellness programs of choice.”

With safety still paramount on campuses around the province, as well as public health orders that remain in flux, hybrid and work from home learning and teaching are all now available and will remain part of the fabric moving forward.

Horton said how to execute these flexible environments effectively is a “very high priority.”

“Right now, it’s about what that new normal is going to look like because of the fact we are still in this pandemic response mode,” she said. “We have to ensure that whatever approach we take creates engagement and inclusivity, because it is more challenging when we’re in a hybrid scenario.”

Buddel agreed, saying Centennial now has “a greater appreciation for flexible and agile work by staff, in consideration of on-campus student and community needs.”

As staff, students, and faculty are more physically separated, Buddel said Centennial finds “frequent and multi-faceted, yet simple and concise” communication works best for his college community.

“As the world reflects on the impacts of COVID-19, there is a new appreciation for information and the ways in which we communicate,” echoed Don Lovisa, President, Durham College.

“Everybody wants to feel connected.”

Lovisa said it’s top of mind at Durham to ensure the community stays strong as the college moves toward a more long-term hybrid environment.

“We are proud of the community we’ve built at Durham College and are extremely mindful of preserving our sense of culture: a supportive, family culture where we work through our challenges together,” explained Lovisa. “Will we be able to maintain this while working remotely? What do we envision for our organizational culture in the future?

These are questions we are always considering as we plan for tomorrow.”

“The health and safety of our people is of utmost importance. While some employees are eager go return to campus, others have embraced and flourished in a remote environment. We are listening to our employees and working to develop a plan that best supports both our employees and students.”

“It’s refreshing to see people come together to collaborate and continue to succeed.

In a way, it’s indicative of just how agile we are as human beings and how, when faced with a challenge, we can foster resilience.”

DON LOVISA, President, Durham College

Lovisa said he was surprised by how much he personally enjoyed working off-campus temporarily – something he didn’t expect after being at the college’s helm for more than 13 years.

“It’s actually quite nice to have a home office and take a different approach to your work,” he said, adding he’s proud his employees continue to thrive in a hybrid environment.

“It’s refreshing to see people come together to collaborate and continue to succeed. In a way, it’s indicative of just how agile we are as human beings and how, when faced with a challenge, we can foster resilience.”

Agility played a factor in strategic planning over the last year at many colleges across Ontario, as well.

Kim Watkins, Vice President of Corporate Services at Mokawk College, said administration pared down its own plan from five to three years – given buildings are still closed to the public, access is restricted in certain areas of campus, Kim and COVID-19 remains “a very long emergency.”

Watkins “You’re trying to make decisions based on the best information we have,” said Watkins.

As many as 1,000 stakeholders were consulted in the creation of the Mohawk College strategic plan through surveys, interviews, and the college website, added Horton.

“We’re building on what we’ve learned over the last 18 months,” she said.

Buddel said Centennial College is currently “undergoing a strategic transformation, which includes a three-year strategy to re-establish foundations and a seven-year strategy to thrive on the other side of

the pandemic and the disrupted terrain of higher education.”

For Lovisa, one hurdle he (and many other) colleges are hoping to overcome when looking forward strategically is restoring their international student base.

Lovisa said Canada became a popular destination for international students since 2017, when Donald Trump became President of the United States, and the momentum was building for Ontario colleges like his. But it stalled out when COVID-19 hit.

“I’ve been in the college system for 35 years. Prior to the pandemic, colleges had been on an upward trajectory,” he said. “The international market is massive but no one ever imagined something like this. As was the case with many postsecondary institutions, our enrolments were affected, and it’s something we’re working hard to rebuild.”

“I don’t think anyone ever imagined that something would take place across the whole world at the same time,” said Franklin.

Travel restrictions around the world mean it could take a couple of years to re-ignite the international student community in Ontario.

Buddel said disparities around the world in both access to information and vaccines will also require more care and attention going forward.

Overall, despite a host of unprecedented challenges the pandemic forced upon colleges throughout Ontario – administrators agree it is also an unexpectedly exciting time of growth, innovation, and overall positivity for the future world.

“Despite the impacts of COVID-19, I’m optimistic for the future,” said Lovisa. “As a college system, we strive to meet challenges head on and work to overcome them. When we come together, we can achieve great things.”

“There’s little doubt in my mind that the future is bright for colleges.” 

orsque Malcolm X, leader des droits civiques, a prononcé ces mots en 1964, il n’aurait pu prédire à quel point ils seraient pertinents plus de 50 ans plus tard, au milieu d’une pandémie mondiale.

Bien que les éducateurs et les administrateurs s’entendent pour dire que l’éducation crée des possibilités pour l’avenir – LA FAÇON dont nous préparons les écoles, le personnel et les étudiants à cet avenir a pris un nouveau sens après que notre monde s’est modifié sous nos yeux, il y a près de deux ans maintenant. « Il y a l’avenir à court terme et l’avenir à long terme », souligne Alison Horton, vice-présidente à l’enseignement au Collège Mohawk. « Il y a la façon dont nous abordons la question alors que nous sommes encore dans la pandémie et encore dans une Alison situation assez fluide et dynamique – et ensuite, quelle Horton est la vision à long terme? » Les collèges sont passés en mode virtuel avec le reste du monde lorsque la pandémie de COVID19 a frappé au début de 2020. Depuis, les établissements d’enseignement ouvrent lentement à nouveau – apportant avec eux des innovations comme l’apprentissage en ligne et hybride, le soutien aux étudiants et au corps professoral, et une planification stratégique équilibrée et prudente.

Linda Franklin, présidente et directrice générale de Collèges Ontario, qui représente les 24 collèges publics de la province, mentionne qu’un solide réseau de soutien par les pairs a permis de faire face aux défis de ces premiers jours. « Je pense que les collèges se sont franchement étonnés de la rapidité avec laquelle ils ont pu passer en mode virtuel. Nous avons constaté que nos niveaux d’engagement étaient vraiment élevés. Les gens étaient Linda vraiment désireux de participer et de s’engager », Franklin déclaretelle. « Nous nous réunissions tous les jours avec les présidents, puis une fois par semaine.

Ces premières réunions portaient sur les questions suivantes, « Comment pouvons-nous y arriver ensemble? Avons-nous des pratiques exemplaires? Qui s’y connaît en ce qui se fait en ligne? Que faisons-nous en ce qui a trait aux ressources en santé mentale? » « Ces questions sont devenues des plans d’action... car personne n’avait le choix. » Selon Linda Franklin, la question pour les collèges est maintenant devenue : « Qu’adoptons-nous de façon permanente et que laissonsnous derrière? » D’un point de vue académique, Alison Horton se dit ravie que les membres du corps professoral et du personnel du Collège Mohawk se sont incités les uns les autres à incorporer de nouvelles technologies et des méthodes d’apprentissage inventives dans leur expérience éducative quotidienne.

La simulation, la technologie du tableau lumineux, les salles d’évasion virtuelles, et les scénarios de jeux de rôle virtuels ne sont que quelques-unes des idées créatives issues de la pandémie, qui resteront sur les campus du Collège Mohawk au fur et à mesure que la crise se résorbera. « Ce que nous avons vu, c’est le corps professoral saisir cette opportunité dans une large mesure – le corps professoral relevant le défi de s’adapter aux circonstances et de s’assurer que notre clientèle étudiante continue de recevoir une expérience de qualité à laquelle ils pouvaient s’attendre », affirme Alison Horton, ajoutant que le haut niveau d’expertise et d’infrastructure du Collège Mohawk a contribué à faciliter la transition vers un environnement plus virtuel. « C’était encore difficile – c’est tout à fait vrai – mais nous avons été en mesure d’apporter ces ajustements en nous fondant sur notre expérience ». Alison Horton souligne l’évolution numérique des services aux étudiants, soit le counselling, le tutorat, les trousses d’outils pour soutenir l’apprentissage à distance, l’aide à l’étude, ainsi que la santé et le mieuxêtre, comme une autre modernisation qu’elle est heureuse de voir se poursuivre dans l’avenir. « La pandémie a, d’une certaine manière, facilité l’accès à ces services », souligne Alison Horton. « Cette année, nous avons organisé dans cet environnement virtuel des séances d’orientation pour la nouvelle clientèle étudiante et celle qui revient, et nous avons obtenu une grande participation. » « Cela a vraiment été un bilan positif de voir ces innovations se concrétiser. » Le Collège Centennial a pris note des tensions survenues au cours des 18 derniers mois et a créé un programme dans le cadre duquel les étudiants pouvaient partager leurs réflexions avec d’autres étudiants et ce, dans un environnement informel, a déclaré Neil Buddel, viceprésident, Réussite étudiante.

Pour les membres du personnel, le collège a créé un accès au financement afin de s’assurer de répondre à leurs besoins également. « Les étudiants ont fait part de besoins liés à des vulnérabilités en matière de santé, à la perte de travail, à la fatigue des visioconférences, à la perturbation du sommeil, à la réduction des interactions sociales

et à des préoccupations relatives au rendement scolaire lié à l’étude en ligne », indique Neil Buddel. « Un programme d’écoute entre pairs a été lancé en réponse à la préférence de la clientèle étudiante pour le soutien provenant d’autres étudiants, plutôt que de chercher à obtenir des services structurés. « Pour les membres du personnel, une campagne sur le mieuxêtre a été lancée avec une myriade de ressources, y compris des ressources financières pour participer à des programmes virtuels et hors campus de choix en matière de mieux-être. » La sécurité étant toujours primordiale sur les campus de la province, ainsi que les ordonnances de santé publique qui demeurent en constante évolution, l’apprentissage et l’enseignement hybrides et à partir de la maison sont maintenant disponibles et continueront de faire partie de la structure à l’avenir.

Selon Alison Horton, la mise en œuvre efficace de ces environnements flexibles représente une « très grande priorité ». « En ce moment, il s’agit de savoir à quoi ressemblera la nouvelle normalité, car nous sommes toujours en mode de réponse à la pandémie », ajoutetelle. « Nous devons veiller à ce que l’approche adoptée, quelle qu’elle soit, favorise l’engagement et l’inclusivité, car la situation est plus difficile dans un scénario hybride. » Neil Buddel se dit d’accord, affirmant que le Collège Centennial a maintenant « une plus grande appréciation du travail flexible et agile du personnel, compte tenu des besoins des étudiants et de la communauté sur le campus. » Étant donné que le personnel, la clientèle étudiante et le corps professoral sont davantage séparés physiquement, Neil Buddel affirme que le Collège Centennial a constaté que la communication « fréquente et à facettes multiples, mais simple et concise » convient le mieux à sa communauté collégiale. « Alors que le monde réfléchit aux répercussions de la COVID-19, il y a une nouvelle appréciation de l’information et des façons dont nous communiquons », fait écho Don Lovisa, président du Collège Durham. « Tout le monde veut ressentir un lien ».

Comment envisageons-nous notre culture organisationnelle à l’avenir?

Ce sont des questions auxquelles nous réfléchissons toujours alors que nous planifions pour l’avenir. » « La santé et la sécurité de nos gens sont de la plus haute importance. Alors que certains membres du personnel sont impatients de retourner sur le campus, d’autres se sont adaptés et ont prospéré dans un environnement éloigné. Nous sommes à l’écoute de notre personnel et travaillons à l’élaboration d’un plan qui soutient le mieux notre personnel et notre clientèle étudiante. » Don Lovisa s’est dit surpris de constater à quel point il a lui-même aimé travailler temporairement hors du campus – ce à quoi il ne s’attendait pas après avoir été à la direction du collège pendant plus de 13 ans. « C’est en fait très agréable d’avoir un bureau à domicile et d’adopter une approche différente de son travail », déclaretil, ajoutant qu’il est fier que les membres de son personnel continuent de s’épanouir dans un environnement hybride. « C’est agréable de voir les gens s’unir pour collaborer et continuer afin de réussir. D’une certaine manière, cela indique à quel point nous sommes agiles en tant qu’êtres humains et comment, face à un défi, nous pouvons favoriser la résilience. »

L’agilité a également joué un rôle dans la planification stratégique au cours de la dernière année dans de nombreux collèges de l’Ontario.

Kim Watkins, vice-présidente, Services généraux, au Collège Mohawk, indique que l’administration a réduit son propre plan de cinq à trois ans – étant donné que les bâtiments sont toujours fermés au public, que l’accès est Kim restreint dans certaines zones du campus et que Watkins la COVID-19 demeure « une très longue urgence. » « Nous essayons de prendre des décisions fondées sur les meilleures informations dont nous disposons », souligne Kim Watkins.

Jusqu’à 1 000 intervenants ont été consultés dans le cadre de la création du plan stratégique du Collège Mohawk au moyen de sondages, d’entrevues et du site Web du collège, ajoute Alison Horton. « Nous nous appuyons sur ce que nous avons appris au cours des 18 derniers mois », soulignetelle.

Selon Neil Buddel, le Collège Centennial « subit actuellement une transformation stratégique, qui comprend une stratégie de trois ans pour rétablir les fondations et une stratégie de sept ans pour prospérer après la pandémie et sur le terrain perturbé de l’enseignement supérieur. » Pour Don Lovisa, l’un des obstacles que son collège ainsi que de nombreux autres collèges espèrent surmonter lorsqu’ils envisagent l’avenir de façon stratégique est le rétablissement de leur effectif d’étudiants étrangers.

Selon Don Lovisa, le Canada est devenu une destination populaire auprès des étudiants étrangers depuis 2017, lorsque Donald Trump est devenu président des ÉtatsUnis, et l’élan s’était créé pour les

collèges ontariens comme le sien. Mais le tout a stagné lorsque la COVID-19 a frappé. « Je suis dans le système collégial depuis 35 ans. Avant la pandémie, les collèges étaient sur une trajectoire ascendante », déclare-til. « Le marché international est énorme, mais personne n’aurait pu imaginer une telle situation. Comme ce fut le cas pour de nombreux établissements postsecondaires, nos inscriptions ont été touchées, et c’est quelque chose que nous travaillons fort à reconstruire. » « Je ne pense pas que quiconque n’aurait pu imaginer que quelque chose se produirait partout sur la planète au même moment », a ajouté Linda Franklin.

En raison des restrictions de voyage partout dans le monde, il faudra peut-être attendre quelques années avant de voir renaître la communauté d’étudiants étrangers en Ontario.

Selon Neil Buddel, les disparités dans le monde en matière d’accès à l’information et aux vaccins nécessiteront également une attention accrue.

Dans l’ensemble, malgré les nombreux défis sans précédent que la pandémie a imposés aux collèges de l’Ontario, les administrateurs conviennent qu’il s’agit aussi d’une période étonnamment excitante de croissance, d’innovation et de positivité générale pour le monde de demain. « Malgré les impacts de la COVID-19, je suis optimiste pour l’avenir », a déclaré Don Lovisa. « En tant que système collégial, nous nous efforçons d’aborder les défis de front et de travailler pour les surmonter. Lorsque nous nous unissons, nous pouvons réaliser de grandes choses. » « Il n’y a guère de doute dans mon esprit que l’avenir est prometteur pour les collèges. » 

Mental health supports on campus for staff, faculty, and

students are always top of mind for administrators, and many colleges have established robust programs to create healthy pathways for those who need assistance.

But what happens when the physical foundation disappears – and everybody goes home to learn? With COVID-19, colleges needed to adapt the way they recognized signs of distress in students and staff – and evolve the shape of their safety net of support.

According to the Centre for Innovation in Campus Mental Health, 76% of faculty and 62% of students believe online learning has had a negative impact on the quality of postsecondary education1.

Students cited lack of motivation, social isolation, and difficulties focusing as struggles to studying at home2.

At the same time, faculty and employees experienced a different kind of burnout. Languishing was added to the lexicon: a term those affected by the pandemic understand all too well.

Centre for Innovation in Campus Mental Health Director Marija Padjen said for postsecondary institutions, it’s important to adopt a 360-degree philosophy when it comes to taking care of mental health.

Burnout recovery: A quick guide to help on your journey Remember the three Rs on your path to burnout recovery:

Each of the Rs can improve specific aspects of burnout: exhaustion recovery (re-organize), cynicism recovery (re-frame) and inefficacy recovery (re-balance).

Step 1 Exhaustion recovery (re-organize your goals efficiently to provide a clear indication of where to focus your energy) Exhaustion is often the first manifestation of “burnout,” defined as the depletion of physical and emotional resources. This leads to feelings of worry, dissatisfaction and ultimately dreading daily activities. This occurs because our brains are biased toward giving a larger weight to negative events than positive ones. Negative aspects of our daily work are strongly related to emotional exhaustion while positive ones don’t necessarily protect us against it.

Solution: Minimize emotional exhaustion by eliminating unnecessary / ambiguous / negative tasks that hinder progress using a goal hierarchy.

Once your goal hierarchy is constructed:

“Everybody plays a role in student mental health,” she said. “If we’re not addressing everybody’s mental health, it’s really difficult for faculty and administration to support students.”

At the start of the pandemic in spring 2020, Padjen said schools shifted to ensure assistance was in place for those affected by the emotional onslaught of unfolding events.

“Overnight, the schools really pivoted,” she said. “Virtual care had been discussed for many, many years, and many schools were looking at and considering at how they might possibly bring this in. This really did light a match and create really quickly a need for schools to switch gears.”

“In a few short weeks, we transitioned to an entirely virtual model, turning to technology and resources, like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, to reinvent the student experience,” Durham College President Don Lovisa recalled about his school’s switch. “We had 24/7 help lines and virtual support services available to help make the transition as seamless as possible.”

Lovisa said while Durham College ensured a number of online supports were available, employees faced challenges trying to connect with their students, especially when some students weren’t turning on their cameras during class.

Padjen noted signs like “a difference in an individual’s tone of voice, readiness to speak, overall demeanor” can be online clues a student may be in need of assistance.

Once a student is ready to reach out for help, she said making the leap to virtual counselling and care was still difficult.

“For some students, it clearly caused issues (to reach out remotely) – if they were in a house that wasn’t safe, it was really hard to have a conversation or video conference with someone who wasn’t safe. For example: abusive relationships, situations where I don’t want my parents or partner to know I’m seeking support,” Padjen described, adding that for others, a virtual support environment is a ‘door opening.’

“For others, where anxiety kept them from getting out the door – this worked,” she said. “It gave them somewhat of an anonymity.”

In an attempt to connect students and combat loneliness, colleges around Ontario came up with creative ideas. Sheridan College created virtual ‘speed friending’ sessions in the virtual venue platform Hopin for students to dial in directly with mentors and peers. Conestoga and Humber colleges started up servers on Discord – a popular group chat app originally created for gamers – for its own community to connect.

Online cooking classes with mental health-themed breakout rooms, e-sports leagues, were other innovative ideas Ontario postsecondary institutions came up with to keep students connected.

Kim Watkins, Vice President of Corporate Services for Mohawk College, said her school created multiple avenues of support for students, staff and faculty to have a safety net after the pandemic hit.

Mohawk has used three surveys to gauge the temperature of its campus community, initially reaching out to staff in the fall of 2020 to see how best to help when everyone was at home.

“After about a month or two of working remotely, we reached out to our employees and did a survey – what it is we could do to help support them further, both mentally and through flexible work arrangements. Some of them said their mental health had declined,” she said, adding Mohawk’s human resources department developed ways to virtually “help stay connected to your peers so people can join in and still feel part of the college.”

2 Cynicism recovery (re-frame your mindset in relation to approach vs. avoidance goals)

APPROACH SYSTEM Approach behaviour and motivation

Reaching the point of cynicism involves becoming more concerned with avoiding negative outcomes rather than achieving positive outcomes. We start to distance ourselves from stressors in order to cope, which leads to disengagement and feelings of doubt. We can start feeling pessimistic, isolated, detached or unmotivated. The world around us becomes traps of possible punishments rather than opportunities of positive reward.

Recovering from cynicism involves shifting our brain from the “withdrawal system” that promotes avoidance to the “approach system” which promotes positive outcomes. There is value in both systems, but cynicism takes over when avoidance-behaviour starts to dominate daily life.

Solution: Go back to your goal hierarchy and re-frame your goals.

Avoidance goals are generally more difficult and we see them as more unlikely to attain. Setting approach-oriented goals increases the activation of the part of our brain affiliated with motivation and growth and reduces activity in the part of our brain affiliated with fear and anxiety.

By balancing ‘wantto’ vs. ‘have-to’ tasks each day, we increase the chance of maintaining self-control and focus. Improved daily self-control increases feelings of self-efficacy.

“I think it’s something that evolved,” she said. “We’ll have Trivia Fridays or lunchtime yoga or meditation.”

Padjen said many employees haven’t taken time off over the last 18 months because the idea of ‘taking a vacation’ can feel unattainable when people can’t or don’t want to leave the house or the city for COVID-19 reasons.

But that concept creates the fatigue and passivity colleges are seeing in their staff.

As schools settle into a new year with the pandemic continuing, Padjen said solution-focused methods are critical when working through burnout.

“As managers, we need to mirror positive behaviour. Capturing that magic and passion is going to look very different,” said Padjen.

“There is this notion of . . . finding your flow. How do we reignite the passion we had for our work? How do we ensure we’re planning for that passion even if we can’t do this right now? What is the piece of your job that’s really exciting to you? If you’re not thinking about that, how can we introduce those pieces of work to you?”

Lovisa said the work to support students and employees throughout the stresses generated by a global pandemic is a moving target. Ultimately, he wants to make sure everyone knows there is a safety net in place if they need one.

“In a year of change that has transformed the way we work, learn and live, we continue to innovate in the face of uncertainty to achieve great things.”

Chacun de ces 3 R contribue au rétablissement par rapport à différents aspects du burnout: l’épuisement (réorganisez), le cynisme (recadrez) et l’inefficacité (rééquilibrez).

Étape 1 Se rétablir de l’épuisement (révisez la hiérarchie de vos objectifs pour mieux canaliser votre énergie) L’exténuation est souvent la première manifestation de l’épuisement professionnel, qui survient quand on a vidé ses ressources physiques et émotionnelles. La personne en burnout vit de l’inquiétude et de l’insatisfaction, et peut en venir à envisager ses activités quotidiennes avec appréhension. Si cela se produit, c’est parce que son cerveau accorde plus de poids aux éléments négatifs qu’aux éléments positifs. Les aspects négatifs de notre travail quotidien sont fortement liés à l’épuisement émotionnel, tandis que ses aspects positifs ne nous en protègent pas nécessairement.

La solution: minimiser l’épuisement émotionnel en éliminant les tâches non nécessaires, ambiguës ou désagréables qui empêchent d’avancer, en fonction d’une hiérarchie de vos objectifs. À partir de votre objectif principal, établissez la hiérarchie de vos objectifs (un excellent exercice à réaliser avec votre équipe); en descendant dans la hiérarchie, précisez les tâches nécessaires à l’atteinte du but principal.

On peut commencer à ressentir du pessimisme, de l’isolement, du détachement, de la démotivation. On en vient à voir le monde qui nous entoure comme plein de pièges et de punitions éventuelles plutôt que d’occasions de vivre des choses gratifiantes.

Pour se rétablir du cynisme, il faut que notre cerveau passe du « système de retrait » qui entraîne l’évitement au « système d’approche » qui met en lumière les retombées positives. Ces deux systèmes ont de l’importance, mais le cynisme s’installe quand les comportements d’évitement commencent à être prédominants dans la vie quotidienne.

La solution: Retournez à votre hiérarchie des objectifs et recadrez ces derniers.

Les objectifs d’évitement sont en général plus difficiles à atteindre et on perçoit comme faibles nos chances d’y arriver. En établissant des objectifs orientés vers une retombée désirable, on active la partie de notre cerveau associée à la motivation et au développement de soi, et on réduit l’activité de la partie du cerveau liée à la peur et à l’anxiété.

earning outside of the confines of a campus is nothing new: different styles of remote learning date back to the 1920s, when the Railway School Car Program took teachers and ‘classrooms on wheels’ to students in the rural communities of Ontario.

The COVID-19 pandemic created a whole new need for remote learning – and it pushed educators outside of their comfort zone and inspired opportunities for innovation and creativity. Mohawk College was a building on an already-strong educational technology foundation. For over 10 years, the College has been delivering most of its academic programing using a blended delivery model, which combines online and face-to-face instruction.

“As difficult as the last 18 months have been, what I’m excited about is: how can we take what worked and what we might have never have tried to capture new opportunity and innovation?” said Janet Shuh, Dean of Continuing Education and Academic Development at Mohawk College. “How can we take the best of what we’ve learned over the pandemic by capitalizing on integrating these digital innovations into a sustainable teaching and learning environment, all predicated on enhancing academic quality and student experience?”

“It’s just a really transformative time to be in higher education.”

Mohawk College is one of several postsecondary Ontario institutions breaking out of the box and evolving their methods of reaching students. In May, as part of its $50 million Virtual Learning Strategy, the Ontario government gave financial support to nearly 400 innovative projects at colleges, universities, and Indigenous Institutes around the province.1 More than 380 new resources, simulations, courses, and programs are slated to be developed, with 70% of all projects a collaboration between two or more institutions.

“Ensuring that Ontario’s postsecondary institutions offer responsive and flexible digital courses and programs will help students build the skills and competencies they need to be competitive in today’s economy,” said Ross Romano, former Minister of Colleges and Universities, in a May 2021 release.

“Our Virtual Learning Strategy is aimed at creating a platform that will allow all postsecondary institutions to compete in the new and necessary environment of learning from home. These projects will help ensure institutions and their faculty have the tools they need to create great curriculum online and that students can access education where and when they need it.”

Shuh said there has been a lot of one-sided online learning over the last 18 months, and faculty often felt like they were 'teaching to black boxes' and missing the interaction with students.

Dr. Marilyn Powers, Director of Academic Technology Integration and Innovation at Mohawk, said staff were craving a new way to reach their students after months of one-sided Zoom-style education.

“They wanted to give (students) something other than a talking head on a screen,” said Powers.

“How can we leave that in the past?”

“Just looking at ways to engage students in different ways,” echoed Shuh. “(Students) are often consuming a lot of content. Anything that increases the interactivity is really valued by students and faculty alike.” Many faculty members are experimenting with lightboard technology that provides a powerful tool for interactive online lectures, mimicking a whiteboard in the classroom.

Gamification is another proven way to motivate students and help faculty achieve successful results in the classroom. The pedagogy around gamification is clear: the more fun you can make learning; the more effective learning can be.

To that end, Mohawk received $423,402 from eCampus Ontario to nurture four projects, including an Indigenous wellness video series and virtual reality content for power engineering programs. Experts from eight colleges (Cambrian, Conestoga, Durham, Georgian, Fanshawe, Lambton, St. Clair) are working together on the creation of a virtual reality boiler system simulator.

For math and nursing students, Powers said Mohawk designed escape room-style learning tools, where participants must ‘escape’ a scenario by answering a series of questions and activities correctly – each right answer leads to the next question until they have achieved the goal and escaped the room.

“They have to solve some math questions in order to get to the next room,” she said, adding nursing students also played along in their own version. “You solve the puzzle; you get the next link you can get into the next room.”

Shuh said integrating simulation-based learning in a virtual environment has many benefits, including working together as a ‘team’ while distanced – and practicing skills in a low-risk environment.

Aviation has employed simulation-based learning as a way for pilots-to-be to gain hands-on experience in a safe space, where mistakes can be corrected. Medical professions also benefit from this stepped-back style of study.

Powers said that’s a big reason why power engineering programs are ripe for this type of learning innovation.

“They’re powering these large boilers that have gas in them, steam, and other hazardous liquids – there’s a lot of high risk around that,” she said, adding some programs are more complex to design learning simulators around than others, based on strict industry regulations.

Virtual reality and simulationbased learning is not only focused on practicing the physical risks of certain professions – it’s also being used to nurture the more emotional side of some careers, like social service workers, as well.

“It’s a great way to do empathy training,” said Powers. “The simulation is a façade. The student would see an avatar, but the avatar is powered by an instructor acting as a difficult client that the student has to interact with.”

With the new experimentation grant, Powers and her team will be working over the next year on generalizing an escape room template in hopes of having “three very different kinds of escape rooms that we want to use in classes.” She anticipates being able to employ virtual reality headsets as well, once pandemic restrictions are lifted as time goes on.

Shuh said Mohawk’s Board of Directors has been “very impressed” with the simulations and escape rooms so far, and how they are translating into success with tests and assignments.

“The Board is always committed foremost to ensuring excellent student experiences and academic quality,” she said. “I think it’s so important for faculty to inspire – they’re getting excited and try to experiment with new esscathings.”

Powers agreed the effort and time put into these innovations will carry through into the future to enhance the postsecondary experience past the pandemic times.

“Anything you can do to make learning and teaching engaging or fun is worth it.”

RECRUITING AND RETAINING TALENT IN A CHANGING WORLD

T

he pandemic has created seismic shifts in the labour landscape and across industries, including the college system. The future of work is more uncertain today than it has been for many decades. My conversations with leaders invariably include terms like ‘The Great Resignation,’ ‘War for Talent’ and ‘Employer of Choice.’

Many colleges are steps ahead of the broader industry by providing staff with a modern defined benefit (DB) pension, which is what more than 90% of Canadians want and need. This is a massive attraction and retention advantage, since less than one in 10 private sector workers have a DB pension and surveys show that most Canadians are willing to change employers for access to a better pension.

Providing a secure, high-performing DB pension plan also improves wellness by fostering the peace of mind of receiving secure, predictable lifetime income in retirement. It removes the stress of managing retirement assets independently, which is required in group RRSPs and defined contribution (DC) pension plans.

CAAT Pension Plan members can worry less knowing that the Plan is performing very well. It is now 119% funded and is considered one of the most sustainable pension plans in Canada.

With growing trends shaking up the labour market, all employers that want to recruit and retain top talent will need to enhance how they promote employee-focused benefits and flexible work options.  THE GREAT RESIGNATION In what is being called the Great Resignation, a record number of Millennial and Generation Z workers experiencing ‘burnout’ are changing jobs or leaving the workforce entirely, while younger Baby Boomers are opting out of the home office for early retirement.

A recent study showed that Canada’s labour force participation rate sat at 65.2% in July 2021, hovering near lows not seen since the mid-1990s (excluding the pandemic), and about 125,000 people are expected to retire in the second half of 2021.

Particularly among skilled workers who had survived pandemicrelated layoffs last year, employees are rethinking their career commitments, workplace conditions, mental health, life goals

and financial priorities. They realize that they don’t want or need to return to the office and can now more easily entertain offers from across the country without having to move.

The time spent working from home has provided Canadians the space to reflect on the value of work and the role they want employers to play in aiding their holistic health and long‑term wealth.

What we are seeing in the Great Resignation is a 21st century labour movement – a collective action across the Canadian workforce, not just individual workplaces. Overworked employees suddenly feel empowered to demand better work conditions, total compensation, and a mindful workplace that nurtures the complete wellness of staff, from onboarding to retirement.

Employers need to step up now, as this movement and the mobility of employees who can work from anywhere will heat up an already competitive global war for talent in many fields.  THE GLOBAL WAR FOR TALENT A recent international study found that 40% of survey respondents are considering leaving their employer this year and 46% plan to move because they can now work remotely. Talent is everywhere in a world of hybrid work, and organizations will need to stand out as the employer of choice.

For companies still struggling to close the knowledge gap left by retiring Baby Boomers, the surge in retirements will widen the talent gap in an already shrinking labour force, especially in leadership positions. Human resources will struggle to fill vacancies with qualified, engaged candidates willing to commit to traditional work expectations.

With many young people resigning and a stagnated class of graduates entering the workforce, these trends pose an existential threat to businesses being able to execute strategies and compete globally.

A culture of wellness is ultimately the key to attracting and retaining top talent post-pandemic. This is where a good pension plays an important role.  BRINGING MORE TO THE OFFER TABLE Workplace pensions have long been a struggle between employers and employees. Canadians, especially those nearing retirement, who have DB pension plans know first-hand the value of protected retirement savings in times of volatility. That is not the case for many Canadians with a DC plan, group RRSP or no retirement plan at all.

Leaders can show a meaningful, lasting commitment to employee growth and security by investing in a modern DB pension plan.

These plans are less risky than group RRSPs and DC plans, and offer value-added features such as inflation protection, survivor benefits and early retirement options – all of which support the longevity, prosperity and welfare of employees and their families.

Based on my experience working with over 100 employers, from 11 different industries that employ staff in every province – the college system is uniquely positioned to help Canadians succeed postpandemic, both as a producer of next generation workers and an employer of world-class talent.

Now is the time for Canadian colleges to promote their employment benefits and valuable DB pension plan. Pensions are an untapped competitive advantage for colleges and are highly sought after by candidates. Along with workplace flexibility and robust wellness benefits, a low-risk, fixed-cost modern DB pension plan will be the cornerstone to attracting and retaining talent for generations to come.

a pandémie a provoqué des changements sismiques dans le paysage du travail et dans l’ensemble des industries, y compris dans le système collégial. L’avenir du travail est plus incertain aujourd’hui qu’il ne l’a été depuis plusieurs décennies.

De nombreux collèges ont une longueur d’avance sur l’ensemble de l’industrie en offrant au personnel un régime de retraite à prestations déterminées (PD) moderne, soit un avantage dont souhaitent bénéficier plus de 90 % des Canadiens. Il s’agit d’un puissant outil d’attraction et de rétention des talents, puisque moins d’un travailleur du secteur privé sur dix bénéficie d’une pension à prestations déterminées et que les sondages montrent que la plupart des Canadiens sont prêts à changer d’employeur pour avoir accès à une meilleure pension.

Le fait d’offrir un régime de retraite PD sûr et performant améliore également le bienêtre des employés en favorisant la tranquillité d’esprit que procure un revenu viager sûr et prévisible à la retraite.

Il élimine le stress lié à la gestion indépendante de l’actif de retraite, qui est exigée dans les REER collectifs et les régimes de retraite à cotisations déterminées (CD).

Avec les tendances croissantes qui secouent le marché du travail, tous les employeurs qui veulent recruter et retenir les meilleurs talents devront améliorer la manière dont ils promeuvent les avantages sociaux axés sur les employés et les options de travail flexibles.  LA GRANDE DÉMISSION Dans ce que l’on appelle la grande démission, un nombre record de travailleurs du millénaire et de la génération Z en proie à l’épuisement professionnel changent d’emploi ou quittent complètement le marché du travail, tandis que les jeunes baby-boomeurs choisissent de quitter le bureau à domicile pour prendre une retraite anticipée. Selon une étude récente, le taux de participation à la population active du Canada s’établira à 65,2 % en juillet 2021, soit près des niveaux les plus bas depuis le milieu des années 1990 (sans compter la pandémie), et environ 125 000 personnes devraient prendre leur retraite au cours du deuxième semestre de 2021.

En particulier parmi les travailleurs qualifiés qui avaient survécu aux licenciements liés à la pandémie l’année dernière, les employés

repensent à leurs engagements professionnels, aux conditions de travail, à leur santé mentale, à leurs objectifs de vie et à leurs priorités financières. Ils se rendent compte qu’ils ne veulent pas ou n’ont pas besoin de retourner au bureau et peuvent maintenant plus facilement accepter des offres de l’autre côté du pays sans avoir à déménager.

Le temps passé à travailler à domicile a donné aux Canadiens l’occasion de réfléchir à la valeur du travail et au rôle qu’ils souhaitent que les employeurs jouent pour favoriser leur santé globale et leur richesse à long terme.

Ce que nous voyons dans la grande démission, c’est un mouvement syndical du 21e siècle - une action collective à travers la main-d’œuvre canadienne, et pas seulement dans des lieux de travail individuels.

Les employés surmenés se sentent soudainement habilités à exiger de meilleures conditions de travail, une rémunération globale et un milieu de travail attentif qui favorise le bienêtre complet du personnel, de l’embauche à la retraite.

Les employeurs doivent s’activer dès maintenant, car ce mouvement et la mobilité des employés qui peuvent travailler de n’importe où vont réchauffer une guerre mondiale déjà compétitive pour les talents dans de nombreux domaines.  LA GUERRE MONDIALE DES TALENTS Selon une étude internationale récente, 40 % des personnes interrogées envisagent de quitter leur employeur cette année et 46 % prévoient de déménager parce qu’elles peuvent désormais travailler à distance. Les talents sont partout dans un monde de travail hybride, et les organisations devront se démarquer en tant qu’employeur de choix.

Pour les entreprises qui s’efforcent toujours de combler le déficit de connaissances laissé par le départ à la retraite des baby-boomeurs, la vague de départs à la retraite va creuser le fossé des talents dans une main-d’œuvre déjà réduite, en particulier aux postes de direction. Les ressources humaines auront du mal à pourvoir les postes vacants avec des candidats qualifiés, engagés et prêts à s’engager dans les attentes traditionnelles du travail.

Avec de nombreux jeunes qui démissionnent et une classe stagnante de diplômés qui entrent sur le marché du travail, ces tendances constituent une menace existentielle pour les entreprises qui doivent être en mesure de mettre en œuvre des stratégies et être compétitives au niveau mondial.

Une culture du bienêtre est en définitive la clé pour attirer et retenir les meilleurs talents après une pandémie. C’est là qu’une bonne pension joue un rôle important.  APPORTER DAVANTAGE À LA TABLE DES OFFRES Les régimes de retraite au travail sont depuis longtemps un sujet de discorde entre les employeurs et les employés. Les Canadiens, surtout ceux qui approchent de la retraite, qui bénéficient d’un régime de retraite à prestations déterminées connaissent bien la valeur d’une épargne-retraite protégée en période de volatilité. Ce n’est pas le cas pour de nombreux Canadiens qui disposent d’un régime à cotisations déterminées, d’un REER collectif ou n’ont aucun régime de retraite.

D’après mon expérience de travail avec plus de 100 employeurs, issus de 11 industries et employant du personnel dans chaque province, le système collégial est particulièrement bien placé pour aider les Canadiens à réussir après la pandémie, à la fois comme producteur de la prochaine génération de travailleurs et comme employeur de talents de classe mondiale.

Le moment est venu pour les collèges canadiens de promouvoir leurs avantages sociaux et leur précieux régime de retraite à prestations déterminées. Les régimes de retraite constituent un avantage concurrentiel inexploité pour les collèges et sont très recherchés par les candidats. En plus de la flexibilité du lieu de travail et de solides avantages en matière de bienêtre, un régime de retraite PD moderne à faible risque et à coût fixe sera la pierre angulaire pour attirer et retenir les talents pour les générations à venir.
