CENTER FOR ART & MEDIA TECHNOLOGY
/ brooklyn, new york
Instructor: Marcus Carter
the Center for Art & Media technology is a public institute located in East Williamsburg, at the edge of Newtown Creek. this design proposal unites the concepts of contemporary art and media art through a series of predetermined experiences that begin right before the entrance. these experiences are centered around the idea of distorting the visitor's reality. With simple and limited materials, such as concrete, two-way glass, and black tiles, the spaces within the institute were easily manipulated to support the feeling of curiosity.
The experience begins upon first glance of the stark black box placed within the industrial part of northern Brooklyn. this black cover juxtaposes its exterior demeanor to its interior arrangements, as it appears bare and unadorned, opposed to its more chaotic and complex interior nature.
the main focuses within this center are the Media Museum, the Void, and th Circulation. the Media Museum consists of dark and immersive art projections that simulate different environments to allow viewers to feel as if they are within an alternate space.
the circulation contributes to the deception as it runs through the building arbitrarily, establishing connections through various exhibits of the Media Museum.
the Void is the space created between the envelope and the Media Museum. this space contains other related programs and the Contemporary Art Museum, which displays more "typical" art pieces in relation to media art. The usage of mirror-like finishes to create the infinity mirrors effect within this space further illustrates the distortion of reality as it projects existing spaces to create illusions of spaces that aren't actually there.
the implementation of two-way glass and mirror-like finishes are imperative in this building, as it apppears in many areas than just the Void. It is strongly used within the interconnected spaces of the Media Museum to illude the idea of seeing versus being seen.

the intersection of Broadway Street and State Street has been a focal point of Albany since the mid-1600s. As time progressed, Albany has managed to catch up to modern standards while maintaining the essense of its past, but as modern technology prevails, libraries have become outdated. to retain Albany’s historical nature and emphasize the physicality of books, their newest library will be located on the corner of State Street and James Street.
the Albany Public library's most notable feature is the mega column that pierces through the entirety of the library. the nature of the building exposes its materiality and program, and invites the public in to encourage curiosity.

PUBLIC LIBRARY
ALBANY
this library promotes the concept of wandering through the building's circulation and the definitive programs on every open floor plans. The circulation is occupied within the mega column as it crosses through various areas of each floor.
to accentuate the separation between the mega column and the main library, the materials juxtapose each other throughout the entire building.
From the exterior, the materials are kept similar to create a cohesive appearance, but is clear that the main library differs by having frosted glass instead of clear glass.
As the mega column infiltrates the main library, the material changes from glass and exposed steel to polished steel finishes that presents a new space.

ExMercato is an architectural response to the similarities of fashion design and architecture. utilizing an array of fashion techniques, such as materiality, texture, layering and boning, we translated these qualities to an application of architecture. the hybridization of elements of existing fashion pieces created the structure, envelope and spacial conditions of this building.
this building houses an open market, where local vendors sell their products, that can transform into a fashion venue/runway for designers to show their latest project. the juxtaposition of the nature of these programs allow the building to be more welcoming for anyone, not just those who live a more high end lifestyle.

the geometries of the skin system were taken from existing fashion pieces and implemented as the structure and facade of the building.
Just like how the technique of fastening is essential in fashion design, the "spikes" of the skin system acts as an ornament and fastener for the paneling, boning and fin organization.

this project explores the creation of new aesthetics through the existing floor plan of Les Invalides. the application of repeated ornaments created the aesthetic drive of this extravagant column.
Narrative of la Colonna di Basilicata by Alessandro: the column was created within the residential areas of the Sassi of Matera as a political statement to draw attention to the wealth gap between the upper class and the lower class. Initially, it was highly offensive to the residents as it was a stark reminder of their poor living conditions. Although, Alessandro knew this would be an offensive piece, he did it for the sake of raising awareness to the wealth gap issue, especially among the upper classes that would eventually hear about it. Soon, people began to accept the piece for its political statement and questioned the government’s monetary allocations. “la Colonna di Basilicata” remains where it was built and is now a tourist attraction for people to learn about the history of Basilicata.

Climate change is the leading environmental global issue of the 21st century. Rising sea levels and storm water surge are major concerns for coastal cities all around the worldv threatening, not only homes and land, but also the cultural and economic integrity of the city.
this thesis proposes to design a system of urban networks that incorporate the water to address the issues of short-term hard infrastructure and rising sea levels. With this proposal comes two different processes that will happen simultaneously with the help of AI technology – one being the expansion and connective network within the city grid above water and the other being the fortification and maintenance of existing structures underwater. this proposal envisions a new way of living with nature, while maintaining the cultural integrity of New York City and handling the ramifications of climate change.
