ver heard of Sybil Ludington? She is reported to have traveled twice as far as Paul Revere to warn families of a British landing and to raise the militia during the American Revolution. Oh, and she was only 16 years old. So why isn’t her name in all of the history books? One can argue it’s because she didn’t have as strong of a brand as Paul Revere.

That’s why an education and branding campaign like “From White Gloves To Work Gloves” is so important. We need to let our community partners, our sponsors, our potential members, our friends, our coworkers, and our families know all that we do as League members. We need to get the word out about our significant impact in the community and become recognized as civic leaders known for rolling up our sleeves and putting on our work gloves. October Cluster Meetings The October GMM will be replaced with six cluster meetings located throughout Tidewater. Cluster meetings are smaller, more intimate meetings and allow members to interact with others and meet new members. The Cluster meetings will be hosted by six fabulous Sustainers. All cluster meetings will be on the evening of Wednesday, October 20, 2010. Merry Minutes will still be at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting portion will begin at 6:30 p.m. The topic is the nominating process and information covered at each meeting will be exactly the same. Each member will be asked to bring an appetizer and beverage to share. If your last name begins with A-K, please bring a drink and an appetizer. Cooking For Clusters Need a quick appetizer or dessert to take the October Cluster Meetings? Try these crowd pleasers from the League’s award-winning cookbook, Tidewater on the Half Shell!
Bacon and Tomato Spread 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 2 tsp. prepared mustard 1/2 tsp. celery salt 6 slices bacon, cooked crisp, drained, crumbled 1 medium tomato, peeled, seeded, drained, finely chopped 1/4 cup finely chopped green pepper Parsley to garnish Combine first 3 ingredients. Stir in bacon, tomato, and green pepper. Cover and chill well. Serve in large hollowed-out tomato with toast points or melba rounds. Garnish with parsley. Yields 1 and 1/4 cups.
Snowballs 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate pieces 1/3 cup evaporated milk 1 and 1/4 cups confectioners sugar, sifted 3/4 cup chopped walnuts 3 and 1/2 ounces flaked coconut Stir chocolate and milk in saucepan over low heat until chocolate melts. Remove from heat and stir in sugar and nuts. Chill for a few minutes and roll into 1-inch balls. Roll in coconut. Makes 30.

More From Nominating The JLNVB Nominating Committee is responsible for presenting qualified candidates to the membership for election to Board positions. We have an amazing group of women on this Committee. Members of the 2010-2011 Nominating Committee are: Courtney Davio, Melissa Polizos, Stacy Long, Kelly Reynolds, Jessica Martyn, Jessica Decker, Brooks Lively, Kim Blake, and Sustaining Advisor Nicole Powell. Members of the Nominating Committee accomplish accountability by: • Staying up-to-date on League issues. • Assuring that a broad range of members are informed about the availability of Board positions and the competencies required to serve in these elected positions. • Identifying individuals who have the competencies and who understand the responsibilities of serving in elected positions. • Working collaboratively with the entire Committee to decide which candidates best meet job requirements and organizational needs. • Evaluating Committee work to continually improve the results and process. Slating the Board The Nominating Committee will conduct President-Elect-Elect interviews on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at TowneBank. Board applications will be due at the beginning of January 2011. These interviews will be conducted on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at TowneBank. Interviews will be conducted for the following positions: Administrative Vice President Treasurer-Elect At-Large Director Communications Vice President Community Vice President Membership Vice President Ways & Means Chair-Elect Membership will vote on the entire slate of JLNVB Officers and Board of Directors at the February 16, 2011 GMM. 2010 United Way Day of Caring HRSD Volunteers Work On The Taylor-Whittle House On Friday, September 10, at 8:00 a.m., the Taylor-Whittle House was flooded with Hampton Roads Sanitation District volunteers eager to work. The 22 volunteers painted the outside patio, first floor small dining room and third floor storage rooms; installed motion detecting flood lights and removed heavy outdated equipment from the third floor. They also cleaned and organized the kitchen, second floor and third floor storage rooms. Their efforts are greatly appreciated and have significantly improved the utility of the Taylor-Whittle House. Thanks to the HRSD team for a job well done!
On December 12, 2010, Norfolk’s downtown historic sites will host a free afternoon of holiday sights and sounds. This is event is sponsored by the The Chrysler Museum of Art. Visitors are invited to stroll between eight historic sites in the Downtown and West Freemason districts and peer into Norfolk’s colorful past. Begin the tour at the Freemason Street Reception Center, 401 East Freemason Street. The Taylor-Whittle House will be featured as a stop on the tour and JLNVB will offer both readings and holiday music. Other stops on the tour are the Moses Myers House, Freemason Street Baptist Church, Norfolk History Museum (Willoughby-Baylor House), Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, MacArthur Memorial, Hunter House Victorian Museum, and Epworth Methodist Church. An Update On Provisional Recruitment September marked the end of an exciting and busy recruiting season for JLNVB. Over the summer, JLNVB was engaged with over fifty prospective members either through our socials, e-mail, or member referrals. We are very excited about this year’s incoming class and the talented pool of women who make-up the 2010-2011 Provisional Class. We kicked off the recruiting year with our first New Member Social on April 27 at Burton’s Grill in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach, which offered an intimate setting for potential members to learn about JLNVB. Our next social, held on May 23 at the Taylor-Whittle House, was attended by seven potential members as well as a number of Active members. On June 17, we mixed things up a bit with a social that incorporated a fundraiser. The “Southern Living at Home” Social allowed prospective Provisionals and Active members to mingle, learn about JLNVB and shop to support our mission all at the same time. In that same spirit, potential members were also invited to the August Accessory Swap and Shop fundraiser on August 21 at the Taylor-Whittle House. A special thanks to Sustainer Priscilla Trinder-Roady who opened her beautiful home and garden for a New Member Social on August 23. Transfer Nancy Wilkinson was on hand to share about her experiences in the Boca Raton League. Transition Chair Aisha Evans also extended an invitation to incoming Provisionals to attend the Transition Social at the Taylor-Whittle House on August 26. This year’s Recruiting season ended on a high note with our final event on September 1 at Gordon Biersch in the Virginia Beach Town Center. Even the “white glove” was seen “on the scene” at Gordon Biersch to welcome incoming Provisionals, as well as secure a few more recruits before the season ended. Special thanks to all who supported our recruiting events and helped create a phenomenal recruiting season: Hi-Ho Silver, Burton’s Grill, Sustainer Priscilla Trinder-Roady, Gordon Biersch, YOU-the membership, and of course, this year’s Provisionals!! Six Key Leadership Behaviors Prior to our first General Member Meeting last month, we offered our first training of the 20102011 year - Leading from the Front for Success, conducted by Leadership Initiatives Director Stacy Long. The leadership training is based on the book, “Leading from the Front: No Excuse Leadership Tactics for Women” by Marine Corps Captains, Angie Morgan and Courtney Lynch. Below are the six key leadership behaviors highlighted during the training.

2010-2011 Leadership Institute Certification Requirements Earn your Junior League Leadership Institute Certification for the 2010-2011 League year by completing one of the following three activities: • Attend 4 out of the 6 Leadership Institute trainings • Attend 3 out of the 6 Leadership Institute trainings and 1 Passion into Action luncheon • To make this certificate even more attainable for membership, one of the training sessions can be substituted by reading a book from the Leadership Library. Books are available for check-out at the Taylor-Whittle House and at all GMMs.

Hats Off! At-Large Director Najwa Knox has done a fabulous job working contacting members about outstanding obligations from 2009-2010, reaching out to members on Leave of Absence, and working to reengage former JLNVB members. Leadership Initiatives Director Stacy Long has done an outstanding job planning and conducting JLNVB trainings for the 2010-2011 year. Nominating Chair Courtney Davio has successfully planned 2010-2011 cluster meetings and is going above and beyond by investigating a possible fundraiser for JLNVB. Provisional Recruiting Chair/Chair-Elect Shon Johnson and Jamie Stump did an outstanding job conducting New Member Socials and has successfully recruited a dynamic and diverse Provisional class for 2010-2011. Provisional Chair/Chair-Elect Erinn Leary and Melissa Polizos put together a fun and informative Summer Retreat for incoming Provisionals and Transfers.
Transition Chair/Chair-Elect Aisha Evans and Kim Blake organized a curriculum for Transition members and held a very well attended social and information session.
Placement Chair/Chair-Elect Ruth Elkins and Lauren Hughes have stayed on top of ensuring all JLNVB positions have a member placed in them, coordinated the assignment of fundraising hours for all JLNVB members, and trained Advisors and Mentors for the upcoming year. Sustainer Co-Chairs Shelly Gram and Debbie Russell have organized and planned the Passion Into Action series for 2010-2011. And finally... We are very pleased to have our new look for eTIDEings! Thanks to Kelly Reynolds, 3 Leos Public Relations LLC, Shannon Wright, and Ashley Gentry for all of your hard work to make this happen and look so great!
Organizational Development Institute The Nominating Committee is soliciting applications for the Tampa ODI to be held March 1113, 2011. Four League members will be selected to attend this three-day weekend (noon Friday to noon Sunday) program. Organizational Development Institutes (ODIs), a series of Mission-based training meetings, are a critical component of AJLI’s training program. These training sessions are geared toward building the knowledge of League members who manage the League’s key functions. Delegates will come away with greater knowledge, fresh ideas and a plan to implement what they have learned. Participants will attend three plenary sessions and will participate in an assigned concentration track of one of the following: Membership Development, Fund Development, Community Impact, Building Internal Capacity and Electing Leaders for Tomorrow’s League. At ODIs, delegates build organizational capacity by learning about: • innovative approaches to developing Junior League members as effective volunteer leaders in their communities • powerful ways to design community programs and partnerships that have significant impact • strategies for sustainable and diversified fund development • keys to building strong internal operational controls • developing an effective nominating process to strengthen the Leagues leadership base In order to meet the hotel and registration deadline, applications for consideration to attend are due to Courtney Davio, Nominating Chair, on Wednesday, November 24, 2010. Our members provide the energy and vitality that make JLNVB a dynamic organization with profound community impact. JLNVB consistently strives to operate in such a way that allows us to work toward meeting the goals laid out in our Mission and Vision statements. Each Council, Committee, and position is an important component in the organization. Our membership, with their desire to give to the community, readily accepts the many challenges faced in running this well-respected organization. JLNVB members are leaders within our communities and they readily accept the leadership roles with which they are presented, both large and small. Leadership within the Junior League can take on many manifestations. It may come in the form of serving on the Board of Directors, accepting a Chair position, making presentations to other community organizations, heading up a special project, accepting double placements, accepting an Active placement as a Sustainer, or one of the numerous other opportunities that present themselves during the course of the year. The one thing that all of these leadership opportunities have in common is the willingness of JLNVB members to step in and accept the challenge. Few other organizations can boast this degree of commitment and enthusiasm among its members and we thank you all.
Over the coming months, we are going to share with you some of the leadership opportunities available in the JLNVB. We will give you an overview of the Councils and explain a bit about the Placement process. Our hope is that this information will help you both to decide how you envision your Junior League career and to increase your willingness to accept leadership roles when they are presented. Our League is indeed dynamic and our members are the heart of it. We, the Placement Committee, recognize and appreciate the time and effort that each of you contributes. Members Of The Month We had two Members of the Month for September: Aisha Evans and Kim Blake, who worked diligently over the summer to pull together a curriculum for a brand new JLNVB Committee. They developed a plan to serve Transition members of the JLNVB – Transfers, first year Actives, and returning members – and advance our goals of improving both member satisfaction and member retention. They also hosted a social and information session for Transition members and will continue with events for these members throughout the year. Thank you to Aisha and Kim Najwa Knox for taking on the challenge of coordinating a new Committee and for all of their hard work this At-Large Director summer!

Leadership Institute Training “Networking In Today’s World”
Entrepreneur and Consultant Linda Simon provided League members with a fantastic Leadership Institute training on “Networking in Today’s World” on Wednesday, October 6. She has 29 years of marketing, branding, social media, advertising, graphic design, photography, media relations, coaching, and training experience. She provided an overview of types of networking, communication styles of the 20th and 21st centuries, ways to connect, and finished her presentation with 10 tips for improving your networking skills. Ms. Simon’s “10 Tips for Improving Your Online and Offline Networking”: 1. Have reasonable expectations. 2. Do some research, get prepared. 3. Be “other centered” instead of “self-centered” when meeting others online or offline. Make authentic connections. Go deep not wide. 4. After meeting someone, follow-up. Do what you say you are going to do. Make “quality touches”. 5. Come into the 21st century with your technology (phone, computer, software, etc.). 6. Determine and use your gifts to get visible. 7. Keep your information current by updating and growing. 8. Make other people look good with your networking. Highlight clients, vendors, experts, etc. in your online and offline media. 9. Merge your online and offline methods, for example turn a speaking engagement into an article, then put the article online in a blog. 10. Be consistent with whatever networking you are doing. “It’s A Girl’s World” “It’s A Girl’s World” was sponsored by the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. and Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast for girls ages 5 - 17 on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast headquarters in Chesapeake. It was a part of JLNVB’s Healthy Kids Initiative and the event focused on developing the potential of whole, healthy, confident girls in preparation for womanhood. Activities such as a hula hoop contest, bean bag toss, a healthy snack station, a body drawing station and a yoga class stressed the importance of making good nutritional and fitness choices and having a healthy body image and strong self-esteem. Two state troopers were also on-hand to discuss internet safety and cyber-bullying and League members also led a talk with older scouts on images of girls in the media. All scouts received a patch custom designed by the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. The Community Council is gearing up for more fall events. During the months of October and November, we will be partnering with the Food Bank’s Kids Café program to bring a mobile Kids In the Kitchen event to seven of their after school programs. We will be bringing the core Kids in the Kitchen values into the community in a fun and enjoyable way for the children. These events will be held at local Boys and Girls Clubs.

Summer Retreat For New Members The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. held a Summer Retreat on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at TowneBank. It was a great success! JLNVB welcomed 20 fantastic ladies to our Provisional Class of 2010-2011 and some new Transfers. The Retreat was a fun filled and informative day for all of our new members. Everyone was greeted by our President, Kimberly Thompson, and President-Elect, Connie Hedrick. They then had the opportunity to meet our five Council Vice Presidents, learned about all that JLNVB does throughout the year, gained insight to the structure of JLNVB, and the importance each Council. After the information portion of the retreat the fun continued at Kincaid’s for the first Provisional Social of the year. The Provisional Committee would like to thank all Board Members who attended and helped make our Summer Retreat an informative and enjoyable day. We are looking forward to a terrific League year! Leadership Placement Fair The Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. is excited to introduce our first Leadership Placement Fair. We will host the Leadership Placement Fair during the Merry Minutes portion of the November General Membership Meeting. Please plan to attend and learn more about leadership roles in JLNVB. The JLNVB United Way Campaign for 2010 raised $5,155.16 to make powerful, positive change in Hampton Roads. The Ways and Means Committee would like to thank Jessica Antel, Kim Blake, Stephanie Dickens, Ashley Gentry, Elsbeth Desselle, Connie Hedrick, Denise Kellam, Leah Roberts, and Kimberly Thompson for their generous support and commitment to the League. We would like to continue this successful pledge campaign by doubling participation from JLNVB members and increasing donations by 50%. Who can support the JLNVB through the United Way Campaign? Husbands, boyfriends, parents, co-workers, neighbors, friends, and of course MEMBERS! How do I support the JLNVB through the United Way Campaign?
