110TH FÉLIX CANDELA DIGITAL EXHIBITION

For the ARCH 3020 course, better known as Intermediate Design II, we participated in the 110TH Felix Candela Digital Exhibition. Said exhibition was a worldwide competition where the competitors had to submit either a poster or drawing highlighting Candela’s works.

MID-CAREER RESEARCH

The objective of this course is to research an architectural topic of choice.

That being said, my investigation was based on the importance and necessity of libraries in Puerto Rico.

My investigation titled “El ágora del conocimiento”, or “The Knowledge Agora”, highlights the state of certain libraries in Puerto Rico. Having chosen a variety of libraries that range from having been designed by famous architects, such as Henry Klumb, to libraries that have had a different function throught the years, one thing is emphasized and acknowledged: PUERTO RICO NEEDS LIBRARIES!!!

The following images represent a selection of the libraries chosen for the research and the operational state in which they are. The Carnegie Library (top left) is currently closed and it is located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. A library that opens from time to time is the Mariana Suarez de Longo (bottom left), situated in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Last, but not least, the Puerto Rico National Library (top right) is to this day in operation.

RHINO RHINO ELECTIVE COURSE

The Rhinoceros elective course focused on gaining knowledge of said computer software. The project presented was a group project where we had to design an object of our choice to demonstrate the knowledge gained throught the course. The group and I decided to design a dinamic sculpture in a park, as shown above.

ELECTIVE COURSE

For the Revit course, we were shown the different options for CAD based programs and how to utilize them to the best of our abilites. One of the assignments was the recreation of a bathroom design, shown in the images on the left. To the right, the recreation of the plans of the Farnsworth House.

ARCH 4010 URBAN HOUSING

The course ARCH 4010: Advanced Design I focuses on the design of Urban Housing. In this case, the project was localized in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Beginning with a site analysis, I noticed that Santurce is a dense area and with little to no vegetation in the area our site was located. With that as a starting point, I designed two towers, with commercial and housing spaces, that still allowed a vast amount of vegetation on the location.

ARCH ARCH 4020 4020 URBANISM

For Advanced Design II, or Urbanism as it’s mostly known as, we were assigned to propose a design that modifies and fixes the Domenech Avenue in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We were divided by streets, and the street limits I established my project were the Ingeniero Carbonell Street and the Maximo Gomez Street.

My proposal for the Domenech Avenue arises from what was observed in the site analysis, poor parking spaces and a various amount of visual contamination, as well as noticing that a four lane avenue was not properly working in that given space. With those observations, my design creates two lanes streets for vehicles and the design of parklets.

PRESERVATION PRESERVATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNOLOGY ELECTIVE COURSE

The Preservation Technology course is focused on architectural conservation.

In said course, the group went on various sites to create as-builts of the conditions of the spaces.

Among the as-builts, we documented Fortin San Jeronimo, which is one of the oldest forts in Puerto Rico.

SCULPTURE SCULPTURE ELECTIVE COURSE

Sculpture was an elective course where we got the opportunity to design and build from scratch an object of our selection. I decided to design a chair made out of PVC and steel. The process went from the initial sketches, to the finding of the materials, up to the assembly by ourselves of said designs.
