Dear Barbara, It’s been just over a year since we lost you. The “we” is bigger than your family and friends, and the year is more than 12 months. It spans two continents, multiple languages, thousands of horses and countless humans. It’s more than the two clubs that are working to keep the Gold Rush Peruvian Classic going. It’s bigger than the North American Peruvian Horse Association, which honored you with a lifetime achievement award one year too late for you to accept it. It’s all the shows you should’ve been at, all those trips you should’ve taken, all the people you would’ve shared your friendship with. This past year has been long and hard. That all-encompassing “we” is better for your influence and diminished by your absence. You once pondered what you most wanted to be remembered for. “Breeding the best, strongest, sanest Peruvian horses” was your answer. You laid the ground work for that. Your herd is dispersed. Your ranch is for sale. You’d be pleased with where your beloved Peruvians ended up. They’re still in the show ring, part of breeding programs and on trails with people who appreciate the best, strongest, sanest horses. But we don’t have you, and that’s what we miss the most. You hated the idea of a memorial. We’ve been diligent about calling everything a “celebration.” It’s not much of a party without the guest of honor. But in keeping with the example you set as the ever-gracious hostess, we encourage everyone to have a wonderful time, enjoy each other’s company and compete fiercely but kindly. And so the celebration of who you were and all you’ve done for the breed and the people in it continues.

With profound gratitude and love, Your Peruvian Horse Show Family
