Tiger, Toad, and Frog COLLECTION OF KHMER LEGENDS CHAPTER 1

There once lived a hungry tiger who could not catch any food. He decided to go on a walk around the forest to find some food and met a frog that was jumping up and down in front of him. The tiger asked the frog “Hello Mr Frog, where are you going?”. “Where are you going, Mr Tiger?” replied the frog. “I am walking around to find some food” said the tiger. The frog replied “Me too! I am walking around to find some food.”.

The tiger is a very mean and proud animal so he said to the frog “Your jump is super slow and short, how can you catch the food like me?”.

“Hey! Stop being mean about my short legs and jumps, I can catch everything that you can catch!” shouted the frog. The tiger did not believe the words the frog said and wanted to test the frog. He said “Let's have a competition, whoever can jump over that pond will be the winner”. The frog replied “Sure, I am not afraid of you.”.

The frog and the tiger arrived at the pond and the tiger stood in front of the frog. His tail was right in front of the frog's face and when the frog called ‘one, two three’, the frog bit onto the tiger's tail. The tiger jumped over the pond but his tail threw the frog over to the other side first. When the tiger landed on the grass, he turned around and saw the frog already there. The tiger could not accept the loss so he asked the frog for another competition. “Let's have another competition, we will both go away to catch some animals and the one who catches the most will win” said the tiger. “Okay, sure!” said the frog.

Both the frog and the tiger walked away to catch some animals and returned back to the same spot to show each other the food. The tiger went first and spitted out all of his food. “Is that all?” said the frog. “Yes” replied the tiger. “Okay, it's my turn now.” said the frog as he spits out 3 pieces. The first piece was a coal but the frog lied that it was the horn of a rhinoceros. The second piece was a fish bone but the frog said it was the elephant's tooth. The frog spitted out his third piece, a piece of rice but lied that it was the tiger's eyes. When the tiger heard that it was a tiger’s eye he ran away quickly but the frog chased him down.

When running, the frog asked a toad where the tiger went and the toad said “Over there” and ended up helping the frog to chase the tiger.

The three animals ran and stopped at a forest and a bamboo forest. The tiger climbed a tree and a bamboo tree, but the frog and the toad pulled a trick on the tiger to let him climb down the tree. Once the tiger was down, he continued to run and get chased by the frog and toad until he reached a lake. The frog and toad kept on chasing the tiger, so the tiger decided to jump into the lake knowing that he couldn’t swim. In the end, the tiger drowned in the water and got killed.
