Let’s call it Rancher’s Rendezvous. Turns out the 7th generation of the R.A. Brown Ranch was dreaming of this event long before we were.
Journal Entry January 20, 2024,
Over the course of three action-packed days, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the history of R.A. Brown Ranch, watch top-tier cow horse action, and take part in a premier horse and cattle sale. Gather around the chuckwagon, connect with fellow ranching enthusiasts, and enjoy great fellowship, food, and fun!
This year’s sale catalog features 35 outstanding horses, the majority being home-bred from the Brown family’s breeding program. In addition, we’ve carefully selected a few consignments from trusted family friends who share the same values we’ve upheld for generations. We’re especially proud to have the 7th generation of Browns contributing to the sale with a ranch pony! Whether you’re looking for a futurity or show prospect, a dependable ranch partner, a broodmare for your program, or a pony your grandkids will love, we are honored to offer these exceptional horses.
While online bidding will be available through CCI.Live, we encourage you to bring your family and friends for an unforgettable experience. Highlights of the event include:
• RHAA Ranch Horse Competition
• Complimentary clinic led by two renowned horsemen
• Highly anticipated Saddle Shootout competition
• Horse and bull sales
• Traditional chuckwagon meals to keep everyone well-fed
In keeping with our family’s commitment to giving back, we are also hosting special events benefitting causes close to our hearts. This year, proceeds will support Braden Johns, a dedicated cowboy recovering from a severe horse-related accident, as well as the National Ranching Heritage Center, which works to preserve the legacy of ranching traditions.
If you have any questions about specific horses, please call the contact number listed with each hip number before sale day, as phone service will be limited during the event. Online bidding via CCI.Live is a great option for those unable to attend in person. Buyers, please keep in mind:
• All horses will be sold in catalog order.
• Once the gavel drops, ownership transfers to the buyer.
• Buyers are responsible for transportation.
• We have limited ability to care for horses after the sale. Please arrange pickup within 24 hours or be subject to a $16/day care fee starting Wednesday, March 12.
We can’t wait to welcome you to the ranch on March 10-12, 2025 near Throckmorton, TX. See you soon!

Giving back has been a part of the R.A. Brown Ranch family longer than selling bulls, cows & quarter horses. A family value which has been passed down generation to generation. Rob and Peggy started a tradition in conjunction with our annual sale to give back to individuals in need and entities who serve others. From selling chickens, auctioning off bird dogs, selling handmade hackamores by the grandkids, to contributing portions of a high selling bull, and many other creative ways, the R.A. Brown Ranch has given back thousands of dollars.
This year we will be giving back to hard-working cowboy, Braden Johns — who was severely injured in a near-fatal horse accident this year — as well as the National Ranching Heritage Center which works to preserve and share the history and heritage of ranches like ours. We have several ways YOU can be a part of giving back. We will be selling raffle tickets with two great raffle prizes, a quarter of an R.A. Brown Ranch Beef and a genuine turquoise necklace. We also will be doing an arena frisbee toss both Monday and Tuesday. Make sure and purchase your raffle tickets and frisbees! You also can take part in the Calcutta Tuesday afternoon prior to the Saddle Shoot-out. And thanks to some very generous hearts, there will be some horses sell with percentages of their proceeds applied to these causes.
For NRCHA open rider and trainer Braden Johns, the unthinkable happened in the form of an in-arena accident on October 14 at the 2024 Snaffle Bit Futurity. Braden, a Texas Tech alum from Scottsdale, Arizona, was pushing a calf during the cow work open futurity preliminaries when a freak accident led to his horse falling and rolling on top of Braden, who was rendered unconscious and immediately taken to the hospital. Today Braden is making strides in Austin at the Texas Nuero Rehabilitation Center. The road may be long for Braden and his precious fiance Hannah Swanbom’s, but we want to make sure they not walk it alone. Join our family in surrounding them daily with our prayers. Keep up with his miraculous recovery on the facebook group, “A Cowboys Grit - Braden Johns.”
The National Ranching Heritage Center has been special to our family for decades. The NRHC, located on the Texas Tech University campus, is a museum founded and dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich history, heritage and stories of ranching in the American West. Today the NRHC stands on 27-acres, with more than 50 historic structures telling the story of ranching dating back to the 18th century. The NRHC not only honors the past but also provides hands-on learning about today’s ranching through the Cash Family Ranch Life Learning Center. The Learning Center is reaching thousands of visitors, including students, hosting 126 field trips last year. The R.A. Brown Ranch Family is passionate about sharing the history and heritage of ranching, but also educating today’s consumers, connecting them with a hands-on experience to see where their food comes from, which is exactly what NRHC is doing.
A Rancher’s Rendezvous 2.0 offers the opportunity of a lifetime with its complementary horsemanship demonstration on March 11, 2025. This year’s demonstration brings together two classic, iconic men of the western industry. Both were cowboys, horsemen and cattlemen, long before they were given the title of horse trainers. They are friends and proteges of another icon, the late, great Buster Welch. Their experience, knowledge and skill is immeasurable, and we feel honored to have them share their time and insight here at the ranch. We hope you enjoy this unique opportunity to learn from these legends, Gary Bellenfant and Kory Pounds.
Gary Bellenfant is a cutting legend, having been a two-time National Cutting Horse Association Open Futurity Champion. His first win came in 1995, aboard Peptoboonsmal. Bred and owned by Weatherford, Texas, residents Larry and Elaine Hall (Grandparents to our very own Jaylee Hall Brown), Peptoboonsmal would go on to earn over $165,000 and sire earners of more than $28 million. Bellenfant’s second Open Futurity Championship came in 2019, riding 2016 stallion Metallic Rey Mink, by Metallic Cat. The stallion, owned and bred by Burt Bull of Los Jaboncillos Ranch, in Premont, Texas, earned $182,624 in the show pen and currently stands at Valley Equine.
An NCHA Hall of Fame member, Gary Bellenfant is the oldest rider to ever win an Open NCHA Triple Crown event. Since 1978, the 75ish-year-old cowboy has earned $3,165,640 and has been an NCHA Open Futurity finalist 13 times. He is still going strong in the show pen after five decades in the industry. “The man has the patience of a saint,” the late Larry Hall said once after spending the day at Gary’s place. “He takes the time to show me what I’m doing wrong like he sincerely hopes I’ll learn and do it right. He’s about the most genuine, honest guy I’ve met in this business.”
Kory Pounds is a popular and successful cutting horse trainer who grew up in Lubbock County, Texas, on a cotton farm. He began training horses in middle school and hasn’t stopped since. At age 14, he moved to Clarendon, TX with a family that ranched a sizeable cow herd. On top of working cattle, Pounds also began riding bulls. It was at a rodeo that he was offered a position with a rodeo company where he began training horses that weren’t rank enough for rough stock. From a young age, he worked hard training horses and running cattle. His life’s path led him to the famous cutter, Buster Welch. Buster invited Kory to work on his ranch and train cutting horses. After four years at Buster’s ranch, Kory went on to work for Gary Bellenfant and train horses. In 1999, Pounds went into business for himself. He then worked for Frank and Ora Diehl from 2004 to 2006. Shortly after, he met his wife Jessica. The couple married in 2008. Now, the two live on a ranch in Weatherford, Texas. He trains open horses and coaches non-pros. Pounds has won six figures every year since 2005. His lifetime earnings total more than $1 million dollars.

We believe it’s worth noting the strong ranch genetics that power of all four year’s champions.
Year: 2020
Horse: Seven S Lucky Spark
Rider: Casey Mitchell
Owner: Casey Mitchell
“”Slim” was cool because he was so big but so athletic, quick-footed and cowy. I trained him when I was in college and showed him for the ranch horse team. He definitely got used more than he got trained on and shown. I think it says a lot about a horse that you can do a full day’s ranch work on and still be competitive in that arena with so much competition. I’m glad I got to win a saddle on him, especially at a show surrounded by so many good cowboys and cowgirls. I was also riding Slim when I won Top Hand at the Texas Ranch Round-Up in Wichita Falls in 2021. It probably should have been Slim that won Top Horse instead of me winning Top Hand. He is a special horse.”
Horse: J Noble Daggett, 2014 Stallion — Smart Little Lena x Royal Red Pepto x Peptoboonsmal
Rider: Whitney Hall
Owner: Whitney Hall, Quarter Circle 99 Ranch
“The R.A. Brown show is my favorite of the year. To win there at a ranch I have always looked up to, in a ranching-focused competition in front of other ranching folks is special. It’s a dream come true to have a horse like “J Noble” that I can doctor cattle on, drag calves on, ranch on, and show at high levels of competition. Not only is he the best cow horse I have ever ridden, he helped me win the title of World’s Greatest Horsewoman in 2022. Now we are riding his offspring, experiencing their natural talent, even making the finals of the Snaffle Bit Futurity on one of his babies. He has about 15 mares and we sell the fillies off the mare and keep the geldings to ride and sell. He is literally the perfect horse for what we do, the perfect package of what we needed at the ranch.
Year: 2023
Horse: Reydium Cat, 2017 Stallion — Metallic Cat x Reynanza x Dual Rey Rider: Waylon Davis
Owner: Guitar Ranches
“That was one of the first real horse shows I took him
to, and there were a lot of people who saw him that day. He is really goodminded and has a lot of ability. We won have won about $84,000 roping on him, including our #10 heeling win at the 2023 Riata . His oldest offspring is 3 and they seem to be athletic and good-minded like him. He stands to the public and we are excited he is now enrolled in the Riata Stallion Incentive. Guitar Ranches own the mare that he is out of, and they wanted to promote their program with a horse like him that could be out in the public eye.”
Year: 2024
Horse: SCR Diamond Motion, 2017 Stallion — CD
Diamond x Stylish Little Oak x Playin Stylish
Rider: Grant Mitchell
Owner: Singleton Ranches LTE: $14,000
“He is a big, stout good-looking horse that doesn’t have any Cat blood so we figured he would cross well on a lot of our mares who do have Metallic Cat-type blood. Both his sire and dam won the Snaffle Bit Futurity. It’s huge to be able to take him and win things like the R.A. Brown show — that is one of the main reasons we have two 2-year-old-fillies —hip #7 and hip #19— in the sale; he did so well last year, we thought it was the perfect place to show off his offspring. It’s been really cool to show him like we have; he’s been to the Run For The Million, World’s Greatest Youth Horseman, the National High School Rodeo Association. He reads a cow well, has enough speed that you don’t ever have to worry about getting outrun, and is fun to rope on. We’ll use his babies as ranch horses, but since a lot of our mares have a show background these babies will have enough talent to go to the show pen, too. I’m pretty excited about what we have going.”

With Tom Cruise looks and Maverick swagger, “Top Gun” lives up to his name. He is extra gentle and simply gorgeous. Top Gun is ranchy and ropey, safe and sound. From the famous Colonel Freckles line, this 10-year-old ranch gelding is in the sweet spot of his life where he has done it all, yet still has many years ahead of him. His disposition is remarkably low-key but he is always able to match the skill of the rider. Top Gun is happy working all day in 4x4 low but gladly shifts to turbo when asked...then it’s right back to chill. This black beauty is certainly one of those extra special horses that makes us proud to have in our family sale.

2020 Bay Gelding Grade Pony
“Beans” was purchased as a green-broke 3-year-old by 7-year-old Bodey Brown. Bodey put ride number six on him and has never looked back. Beans has big horse brains in a little horse frame. He is gentle enough for the neighbor girl and tough enough to go barefoot day after day at The San Jose. Grandpa, this little bay gelding will follow you anywhere you need to go or stay with the ‘hold up’ till you get back. Bodey has started roping on him out of the box, rode him in the parade, double with the cousins and down the track in a 220 yard race. Beans can stay up, back up and step up with no hump up. He’ll lay down, travel ‘round and jump down with no fall down. He hasn’t been hogtied and he ain’t refried...he’s just, “Beans”. And beans have powered many a good cowboy.

He has no buck, but has a big motor and would be best suited for #5 and up headers. Use him on the ranch one day and take him to town the next, this gelding should last someone a very long time. There are not many opportunities to get your hands on an own son of Playgun these days. Teddy has the size —14.3 hands and 1,125 pounds— with the conformation to be a legitimate ranch stallion. Lanham Brown has been riding him for over a year, and he has the foundation to go many different directions. Lanham says that this horse is a “big stopper and always aims to please.” Teddy has been used out on the ranch for big gathers and calf branding, and takes it all in stride. He will sort dry cows, strip calves, and is pleasing to ride in the arena. He is good-mannered and good-minded. Out of our best Metallic Cat daughter, he provides a unique pedigree that combine’s the older Playgun with the modern-day performance bloodlines. Teddy carries the bone, foot, and size that ranchers are looking for and is on track to go the futurity route if you choose. He is eligible for the NCHA Breeders Invitational, NCHA Super Stakes, NRCHA Cow Horse Incentive and AQHA Ranching Heritage.

“Smoothie” is an all-around gentle ranch gelding by Smooth As a Cat (earnings of $500,037; offspring earnings of $37 Million) and out of a mare that Kelsey competed on for years —CD Royal Chica. She was very cowy, a great ranch rodeo horse and a RHAA World Champion. Smoothie is gentle for the whole family to use. Buddy has used him extensively on the ranch. He can do it all — drag calves, doctor yearlings, sort, gather rough country. He’s been to town and seen the sights. We’ve used him on the cattle crew in Fort Worth for large NRCHA events. Smoothie has been shown at a few ranch horse shows and he has a nice spin, lead change, and can stop hard. He’s also a great breakaway prospect as his natural style will finish a run quick. If you are looking for a reliable and honest gelding, Smoothie is your guy!

“Stevie” has been a part of our family for three years. From the get-go, she has been our 8-year-old daughter Hadleigh’s favorite horse in the barn. Stevie has travelled with us to ranches in Texas and New Mexico, and she is always easy to have on the road. Hadleigh has gathered big pastures, helped sort in the pens and been around all the commotion of processing — Stevie handles it all with a quiet demeanor and always takes care of Hadleigh. Stevie has been shown in Ranch Horse Association of America and National Reined Cow Horse Association shows and enjoys the show pen. She is a pretty mover with all the maneuvers needed to make a show horse — easy lead changes, big stops and lots of cow. We have hauled Stevie to jackpots to heel on, and her cow, stride and stop make it easy to catch. There is a lot of opportunity with Stevie; she will fit beginners, youth and advanced riders. Take a look at her pedigree — she is by $13 million sire Stevie Rey Von, a National Cutting Horse Association Futurity and NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity champion sire and 2024 leading rope horse sire. Her dam Lizzys Lil Playgirl won $53,000 in the cutting and is a producer of nearly $50,000. She is eligible for Riata, Gold Buckle and Royal Crown incentives. Stevie has a feminine look, stands 14.3 hands and weighs 1,015 pounds. She gets along with all horses and is not mare-ish. Call Slick: (334) 507-1386. Flash stays gentle with time off, he is easy to be around and 100% sound. He is paid into the Riata Buckle.

On the search for an all-around pony? Great for kids of all ages! Ranch work ready! Barrels and goat ribbon pullHondo fits the bill! A 6-year-old, 13 hand gelding, he’s easy for the kids to catch and steady around the chaos. Hondo has been used on a large ranch in the Texas Panhandle to gather rough pastures and checked weaned calves; he keeps up with the other horses and runs well with the geldings. Time off is no problem, he stays gentle and ready to ride. A solid, good-minded pony; he is a barn favorite!

“Brad” is a 2022 gelding that was raised and started at Sarco Creek Ranch. He is on track to compete at the Snaffle bit futurity and with continued training we feel he would be a great fit for any level competitor to take him there later this year. He has the demeanor that would fit any family member and any program. Brad is one of the best minded 3-year-olds we have had the pleasure to own. He has the mindset of a seasoned, bombproof 10-year-old horse wrapped up in a young body. If you want something that you can be competitive on and then throw your kid on, Brad is your guy. Both of his parents were money earners and proved themselves in the show pen. He is built big enough and athletic enough to be competitive at any performance event you choose.

“Ray Lewis” as his barn name suggests, is a stocky made, eye-catching, 7-year-old gray gelding entering the prime of his life. He is Donnell’s go-to mount out on the ranch. He has recently been ridden and will be presented by Lanham. He has been a solid ranch gelding for us, and has experience in almost all aspects of ranching. This steel gray gelding is easy on the eyes, moderate in stature at 14.2 hands and 1300 pounds, and has the manners to be a great asset to many different cowboys’ strings. He’s easy to ride out in the pasture, and will work the gate with ease when you get to the pens. He’s been roped on, drug calves, sorted, gathered mares, and has traveled many miles of the RAB.

Tule Tom is a super versatile horse that we’ve taken all over to rope and ranch on. From the ranch to the arena, Tom will deliver. This pretty buckskin has won money heeling at World Series Team Ropings, been in Ranch Rodeos, and takes care of us at the ranch. Whether it’s 15 mile gathers, dragging calves, doctoring yearlings in the pasture, Tom can do it all. He’s qualified for the 2025 AQHA Ranching Heritage World Show in the heeling. He is easy to shoe, good to be around and is an easy keeper. Tule Tom stands 14.3 hands and weighs 1,150 pounds. Come try him out before the sale.

“Popatop” is a versatile 12-year-old gelding who has been used on the ranch. He has been roped on, both in the arena — heading and heeling — and outside on the ranch. He is great for any kind of ranch work, including dragging calves and doctoring yearlings. Popatop is a great kid horse and would be good for riders who are less experienced, but still enjoyable for a top hand to do his work. He is easy to shoe. Overall, he is easy going and would make a great family horse.

One Fine Eddie, better known as “Coleslaw,” is a pretty 7-yearold gelding. He has been used extensively on a large ranch in the Texas Panhandle gathering big pastures, dragging calves during branding and doctoring calves in the pasture. A few important things to note: as a yearling he ran through a fence during a storm and has a significant scar on his left shoulder. With a long stay in a small pen, he developed his only bad habit which is chewing tails. We recommend running him by himself or next to other horses so long as he can’t reach through the fence. He is gentle, easy to catch, and will go all day. Don’t miss this opportunity on a really nice ranch gelding!

Here is a granddaughter of $7 million sire Hollywood Dun It. This broodmare throws foals with size, bone, and gentle dispositions. She sells safe in foal to the late stallion Take A Pick, a 2016 AQHA World Champion. We like this cross so much we are keeping the Take A Pick filly she raised last year. She is the first roan we know of by Take A Pick and she has the athletic build to go with the pretty color. Here’s your chance to raise one of these fancy Take A Pick babies yourself before they are all gone. 100% of the proceeds from Hollywood will be given to Braden Johns for his recovery.
