yler County is a progressive community located at the crossroads of US Highways 69 and 190, T approximately 60 miles north of Beaumont, Texas. The county has a population of over 20,000 residents resulting in a population density of 22.30 residents per square mile.That low population density means a lot of beautiful country and recreational possibilities. You can explore some of those recreational opportunities in the pages of this magazine.

Tyler County has something for every member of the family to enjoy, from fishing and camping at nearby Steinhagen Lake, to turn of the century (that’s the 19th and 20th centuries) themed Heritage Village and Museum, Allan Shivers Library and Museum which houses memorabilia of former Texas Governor Allan Shivers, a rapidly expanding Cultural Arts District with an Art Gallery featuring the works of 125 artists.

Tyler County also has events year round for visitors of all ages, including the Annual Tyler County Dogwood Festival which attracts thousands of visitors each year over three weeks in late March and early April.

During the summer months, you can cool off at Lake Tejas in Colmesneil. Colmesneil also offers tours of the historic Colmesneil House and a railroad museum.

There’s Plenty To See & Do In Tyler County So Plan On Staying Awhile!

by Kelli Barnes Welcome to Tyler County, Texas! We are located approximately 100 miles from the Louisiana border in East Texas, between Lufkin and Beaumont on Hwy. 69; and between Livingston and Jasper on Hwy. 190.

As you will see, there’s a lot to do any time of the year in this S.E. Texas community.

The first thing to do is book a room. Woodville has two motels - Stagecoach Inn and the Woodville Inn, plus a few Bed and Breakfast accommodations: Cherapa Retreat, The Windmill Farm, Village Street and Winnaway. Any of these options would be a great stay for a special weekend.

Rv’ers will enjoy Paradise RV Senior Community or Triple Creek RV Resort. Triple Creek always has music venues planned

on site for an additional treat.

New to the county is Sunset RV & Cabins. Chester RV Park is also available. Lake Tejas is another option if you enjoy fishing, camping and swimming; also Steinhagan Lake with amazing fishing, camping and birding opportunities.

There are eight official birding/ wildlife trails in Tyler County and exotic animal viewing and hunting opportunities. Also, Alabama Coushatta Tribe of Texas is just East of Woodville, Allan Shivers Library and Museum in Woodville, The Colmesneil House Museum in Colmesneil, and the John Henry Kirby Museum in Chester. Camps in the area include Camp Earland, Camp TaKuLa, Victory Camp Colmesneil, Camp Niwana and Camp Tomahawk.

The Dogwood Festival is historically three weekends long.

The first weekend this year, is Friday – Sunday, March 22 - 24 for Festival of the Arts. Enjoy a weekend full of activities at the historical Heritage Village Museum, Gift Shop and Pickett House Restaurant plus the downtown Woodville Art District. Western Weekend for 2013 is March 29 and 30 and will include a trail ride, a twonight rodeo, rodeo parade and rodeo dance. The third weekend, Dogwood Queens’ weekend is the grand finale Saturday, April 6. Following tradition, it is the first weekend of April each year. This will involve a downtown crafts fair, a huge parade, complete with floats and bands, followed by the Queens Coronation and outdoor pageant, entertainment and fireworks at the historic outdoor amphitheater.

Hospice is not a place; it’s a philosophy of care that enhances life as it nears its end for the patients and their families and friends. Even when medicine cannot provide a cure, it can offer comfort, care and assistance that can help maintain a better quality of life for the patient. This type of attention, called palliative care, involves the aggressive treatment of physical and emotional pain and symptoms.

It focuses on enhancing a patient’s comfort and improving quality of life.

Hospice is based on the belief that through sensitive, appropriate care and the support of a caring community, terminally ill patients and their families can begin to prepare to face the inevitable challenges ahead. Centuries ago, a hospice was a shelter for travelers. Over the years, it evolved into a refuge where people could find care, comfort and support during difficult times in their journey through life.

When a patient’s physician certifies that hospice care is appropriate, one of Odyssey Hospice’s nurses will admit the patient to our program within three hours – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The nurse and an Odyssey affiliated physician, who specialize in understanding and treating pain, will develop a plan of care to ease the patient’s discomforting symptoms. Under Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance programs, Odyssey will provide medical supplies and equipment associated with the terminal illness, such as bandages, catheters, oxygen, hospital bed, wheelchair and walkers, at no cost to the patient. Odyssey will also provide medications associated with the terminal illness to help relieve symptoms at no cost to the patient.

An Art Gallery in Tyler County? Visitors to Tyler County are often surprised to find out that there is not only a Gallery, but also a thriving art community!

Over the last few years, the county, and Woodville, has claimed fame as the newest art community in South East Texas, and has a growing Cultural Arts District anchored by the Tyler County Fine

Art Centre & Gallery and the Emporium For The Arts.

The art gallery is the showcase for the Tyler County Art League, an organization which has grown over the last seven years from a gathering of nine artists back in 2003 to a membership of 475 today. The Art League completed the purchase of the gallery building last year, and is now focusing on upgrading the facility.

The gallery is filled with art representing 125 artists with work crossing many genres, from painting and sculpture to photography and pottery. Whatever your interest in art, you will probably find it represented in the gallery.

The Art League is working hard in 2013 to expand its service to the community by expanding its mission of education. They will be bringing more artists into the schools to work with students and art teachers.

Several county schools have strong arts programs, and the League wants to support that effort.

The League will also continue to support the artists, and plans to enhance their offerings by offering live artist demonstrations, promoting “open studio” opportunities, and other innovative opportunties in addition to the many art and music classes they currently offer at the Gallery.

The Art Gallery is located at 210 W. Bluff (Hwy. 190 west) in Woodville and is open Tuesday through Saturday.

Emporium For The Arts -

A vibrant Art Community has developed in Tyler County over the last 10 years through the effort of a lot of people involved directly in the arts and through continuing community support. One of the Tyler County Art League’s original goals was to bring to that community not only quality visual arts, but a widening variety of performance art. “The Emporium For The Arts,” a separate non-profit corporation, was born a few years ago out of that effort, thanks to the tireless work of Sam Haney. In fact, the current Emporium Theatre is located in Sam and Judith’s living room in Woodville! And that’s part of the story about the birth of a new, larger theatre in Tyler County.

Performing Arts Comes To Tyler County

atre and performance art. The last major effort before the Emporium was years ago when an old movie theatre in Woodville was converted into the Wood-Fain Opera house, and provided great experiences for folks in Tyler County to view live theatre. That facility eventually closed and burned down, but there was still a group of people who wanted to both participate in, and see, live theatre. The organization that ultimately became the “Emporium For The Arts” grew out of that interest.

“The seed was sown when we put together ‘Steel Magnolias,’ needed a place to perform it, and rented the Lions Den,” Judith Haney explained.

“We got great reviews and great support from the community for bringing performing art and live theatre back to Tyler County.”

There were problems, though, in making that happen because of the lack of a stable place to practice or perform. Various churches, Heritage Village, etc. let them use their space, but sets had to be constantly set up and torn down.

One day Judith and Sam were brainstorming solutions to this problem, sitting in what was then Sam’s glass studio on the lower floor of their home in Woodville.

“At some point we thought about the space we were sitting in,” Judith said.

Sam reluctantly moved all of his glass studio out of the space, “and we started playing around with community theatre.”

“Christmas Bells” was the first performance in the new “theatre.” They built a small, 16’x15’ stage, with viewing limited by two support posts on each front corner. “It was pretty limited; but, over the last four or five years, we’ve been able to expand on it with plays like, ‘Always Patsy Cline,’ ‘Arsenic And Old Lace,’ and ‘On Golden Pond.’” They also added live concerts, bringing musicians in from outside the county and providing a place for local musicians to perform.

Two years ago the Emporium got the opportunity to buy the old glass company building adjacent to the existing theatre. Finally the Emporium had its own facility, “not in Sam and Judy’s living room.” Well, they had a building, but it needed a lot of work.

Work on the theatre is progressing steadily and will be done in several phases. The Studio, the area on the left front of the model (see photo), is already being used for guitar classes, art classes and various workshops.

Phase 2 of the project, the lobby area on the front right, is underway.

Phase 3 will be the main audience area, and Phase 4 the dressing rooms and prop area in the back. Projected cost for all of this work is in the $50,000 to $75,000 range. The Emporium is actively raising contributions to fund the work. While the entire facility will not be finished at that time, the plan is to have the first play, a reprise of “Steel Magnolias,” in the main audience area in late summer, early fall of 2013.

When completed, the theatre will seat 200, but retain the flexibility to change the seating for Theatre in the Round and Dinner Theatre productions. There is still a lot of work to be done, though, and making it happen will need to be a community effort. Volunteers with expertise in building and remodeling are needed, as are materials, and direct financial contributions.

The primary fundraising effort is through the “Become A Star” program. There are three levels of contribution. The Gold Star is a $500 contribution, Silver Star a $300 star, and Bronze Star a $100 star. The stars will hang in the Theatre lobby and have the name of the contributors engraved on them. New Biomass Related Businesses

By: Kelli Barnes The landscape in Woodville, Texas and surrounding areas is changing for the logging industry in East Texas. In Woodville, the German Pellet Plant will be operational by the second quarter of 2013 and will need 1.2 million tons of fuel wood annually. Then, the East Texas Electric Cooperative’s Woodville Biomass plant will be operational in 2014 and will need 500,000 tons of fuel wood. “Already, this creates the need for 86 more logging crews and each crew has

about 10 employees which equals 860 new local jobs,” according to Lonnie Grissom, owner of eight different logging based businesses in Tyler County. Grissom went on to say that the opening of the newly improved Panama Canal in 2014 is going to open up the entire Asian market for East Texas to be able to haul logs out of the woods and to the Port of Beaumont.

“I encourage East Texans to support the logging industry and think positive when you see a log truck on the highway,” said Grissom. “We need help from citizens so we can create communities where our children and grandchildren can have jobs and raise their families without having to move away.

In order to continue to create more real jobs for this area, logging industry representatives need some quick relief from lawmakers, and cooperation from citizens. “I know the German Pellet plants are looking now for alternative sites and because of difficulties in Texas, they are looking at other states,” said Grissom. “I also know of a group out of Kentucky looking to start an industry that compliments the logging industry, but they are leaning toward Louisiana instead, due to Texas regulations.”

Napco representatives explained that chips for bio-fuel include damaged trees, limbs, branches and pine needles as well as large underbrush such as yaupon. This is much more inclusive than round wood thinning which is limited to logs that are large enough to be loaded onto a log truck. This broader scope can yield 51 tons per acre of bio-fuel chips as compared to 20 tons per acre of thinned round wood. While bio-fuel chips may be only $3 per ton, the larger volume per acre can offset the price difference for round wood.

To Bring 100’s Of Jobs To County Since the bio-fuel chipper thinning approach is ideal for smaller trees, the first thinning of a forest can be years earlier than a round wood thinning. This enables the trees left standing after the first thinning to begin their post-thinning growth sooner. Also, the forest left standing is more evenly distributed and cleaner than that after a round wood thinning.

Grissom was born and raised in Woodville, Texas and logging was a part of his upbringing. “My dad, Lonnie Grissom, Sr., was a wood dealer for Temple Eastex and my grandfather, Otis Grissom worked in the business. Grissom graduated from Kirby High School in 1979, married and was in the United States Army for four years, stationed in Germany during the Cold War. “My oldest daughter was born in Germany. This was the only time I have lived outside of Woodville,” said Grissom. After serving in the military, Grissom came back to Woodville, working at an electric motor shop, and later purchasing it. Grissom also worked on short wood crews until he and Buddy Wilkinson from Colmesneil started G&W Enterprises in 1986. They remained partners in the logging business for over 20 years. Grissom currently has 95 employees and is hiring. All of his children and grandchildren live in Woodville. “I want them to be able to make a living working in Tyler County,” said Grissom. “I am disappointed that young people are having to move away from here to find work.”

According to state representative James White, “Our forestry sector impacts the East Texas economy at a level of nearly $3 billion. Directly and indirectly, this amounts to fourteen thousand jobs.” White is planning to propose legislation that will change the

“The forestry industry understands that their industry’s efficiency, profitability, and public image depends upon having the necessary and safe public infrastructure in place,” said White. “Forestry is in a transition, looking at other markets for wood products like biomass and wood pellets… with new industry innovations, this industry is poised to rebound significantly, and help is needed to ensure that our forestry industry maintains its global competitiveness.”

Tyler County Dogwood Festival A Celebration Of Spring “It’s Dogwood Time In Tyler County.” Every year, Tyler County folks have celebrated Spring for over 60 years with the Annual Tyler County Dogwood Festival. This year will be the 70th time Tyler County has hosted the event. The festival, which celebrates the Dogwood Trees that can be found throughout the county, spans three weekends from mid March through early April and is enjoyed each year by thousands of visitors from all over Texas and the U.S. The Dogwood Festival was founded back in the 1940’s by lifelong Tyler

This year’s event will kick off with the Festival of the Arts at Heritage Village Museum on March 22 - 24, followed by Western Weekend March 29 and 30, and the Queen’s Weekend on April 6. Plan to attend each weekend. There are always new things to see and do.

Heritage Village Museum, and downtown Woodville, is the place to start your day during the Festival of the Arts weekend. The Village, located on Hwy 190 on the Western edge of Woodville is a living reproduction of a 19th century village in Tyler County and features 19th Century buildings with displays depicting life in the county at the end of the 19th century.

A main attraction at the Village is the large showing of handmade quilts on display. You will also find blacksmithing demonstrations, the “Spinners and Weavers,” music of every kind and food vendors for the hungry!

You can also visit Tyler County Art District during the Festival and watch artists in a variety of mediums at work. Be sure to take a tour of the Tyler County Art League’s gallery while you are in town.

Western Weekend always brings lots of folks to Woodville for a weekend of fun that includes a parade featuring one of the largest trail rides in the state. The riders converge on Woodville on Saturday.

The Main Event during Western Weekend, though, is two nights of Lion’s Rodeo action. Last year’s Rodeo brought out record numbers to watch some fast-paced action in the arena. The Lion’s Club, who sponsor the rodeo, promise this year will be even bigger and better. The Western Weekend Rodeo Queen is crowned during the Saturday night rodeo event.

The weekend also features vendors of every kind, from arts & crafts to all kinds of food. They are located on and around courthouse square in downtown Woodville. Bring the family and plan to spend the entire day enjoying the festivities.

Queen’s Weekend is the showcase of the three week festival. Saturday offers a full day of fun. You can spend all day shopping in the arts & crafts of every

kind, enjoying the Classic Car show, and joining hundreds of folks who line W Bluff in Woodville to watch the annual Queen’s Weekend Parade.

Then you will want to head out to the amphitheater for the Queen’s Pagent and Coronation, featuring the oldest outdoor drama in the south. The event is held in a 2,500 seat outdoor venue. The 2013 Tyler County Dogwood Festival Queen will be crowned at this event, followed by a play and ending with a spectacular fireworks display.

Fort Teran - A Ghost Of Texas Past The Fort May Be Gone, But Its History Lives On

by Emily Waldrep If you’ve lived in Tyler County for long, you have heard about a place called Fort Terán. Some know it as a long dirt road that is perfect for long, lazy horseback rides or a place for high school students to drive around in their trucks. Some people even swim or canoe around the old Fort. Despite the fact that the historical marker is a well-known location in the community, most people aren’t aware of Fort Terán’s rich and interesting history.

Jonathan Gerland, a writer for “The Pine Bough” Magazine and executive director at the history center in Diboll is one of the experts on the history of Fort Terán. According to his article in the December 2011 issue of “The Pine Bough,” Fort Terán began as a border patrol on the Neches River. Mexican citizens controlled the post, and used it to keep illegal immigrants from the United States from crossing over into Mexico.

The Fort is named after General Manuel Mier Y Terán, who was sent on an expedition by the President of Mexico to explore and defend Texas. According to Gerland, he fought with Mexico’s revolutionary forces beginning in 1811 and was elected to the first congress in 1822. Later, Terán was named commandment general of the Eastern Interior provinces, which gave him both military and civil authority over several provinces, including Texas. At this time, Mexican owned Texas was on the brink of falling into the hands of the United States, and Terán increased military presence in the state by establishing six new garrisons including Tenoxtitlán on the Brazos River, Anahuac at the mouth of the Trinity River, Lipantitlán on the Nueces River, Terán on the Neches River, Velasco at the mouth of the Brazos River and Lavaca on the Lavaca River.

Although Terán created these outposts in hopes that Mexican influence would overpower American influence in Texas, he didn’t actually oversee the building of Fort Terán.

Peter Ellis Bean built and commanded Fort Terán, and according to Gerland was “sort of a Forrest Gump character of the early nineteenth century Mexico and Texas, who for most of his life brushed shoulders with nearly all the major public figures in both regions.”

After traveling with Terán on his expedition of Texas, Bean was commanded to establish Fort Terán on the bank of the Neches River in 1831. According to Gerland, Fort Terán was most likely built shortly after 1831 and was constructed with wood, which explains why none of the original structure stands today. But, according to letters written

by Colonel Piedras in 1832, a bricklayer or stonemason was also used in construction of Fort Terán.

Interestingly, Bean housed an American visitor at the fort for several weeks in spring of 1832. The land surveyor, George W. Smyth, stayed with Bean at Fort Terán and would later go on to sign the Declaration of Independence.

But, the Mexican occupation of Fort Terán ended shortly after it began. The Fort was abandoned in August of 1832 after Colonel Pie-

dras was sent back to Mexico and Bean was given his old job as commandment of Nacogdoches. According to Gerland, Fort Terán had been completely destroyed by 1834 and by 1835 Terán was just a small town consisting of about 10 houses.

Afterwards, a ferry system was established at Fort Terán and several attempts were made to create a township surrounding the area. Sadly, a large town never prospered near Fort Terán, but a post office did operate from 1871 to 1885 until the service moved to nearby Rockland.

A railroad was built shortly after and ended the ferry service at Fort Terán. The railroad also diminished the riverboat traffic on that area of the river, and slowly but surely, Fort Terán was forgotten.

According to Gerlands’ studies, by the 19th century Fort Terán had become hard to find and most of the buildings had been abandoned

and rotted away. At that time, many folk tales surfaced telling of lost Mexican treasures and cannons sunk at the bottom of the Neches.

Sadly, the likelihood of any actual gold being found at Fort Terán is slim.

“The legends are unconcerned that history shows very little gold ever existed in Mexico Texas,” says Gerland. “The native Mexicans in East Texas were much poorer than their Anglo fellow citizens, and the Mexican soldier, even colonel Bean, were notoriously poorly paid.”

Now, Fort Terán is just a small historical marker, situated deep in the piney woods of Tyler County. Although treasure has never been found at the location to this day, maybe Fort Terán’s treasure is actually held in it’s rich, cultural history that ties characters of years ago to the citizens living in Tyler County today. If anyone has ever gone and walked the banks of the Neches River near the old Fort, or taken a dip in the cold, muddy water, they probably understand that the treasure of Fort Terán isn’t meant to be found, it’s meant to be understood.

Allan Shivers Library & Museum Preserving The History Of A Texas Governor

Allan Shivers Library & Museum certainly offers a look back on its past through its collection of memorabilia from former Texas Governor Allan Shivers. More than that, though, it looks forward in its commitment to serve the Tyler County community through the library.

Governor Shivers (1907 - 1985) might have been born in Lufkin, but he grew up in Woodville, so Tyler County folks consider him a “native son.”

The building housing the museum was built in Woodville by Robert A. Cruise in 1881 and moved in 1963 to make way for a hotel.

Relax.

The Shiver’s secured the building and moved it to its current location, where they restored it and converted it into the museum. At the same time they built a completely equipped library.

The most recent addition to theLibrary is Bunch Reading and Meeting Room, a 2,000 sq. ft. extension with a meeting room, kitchen, sitting room and space for additional library materials.

It also contains large print books and AV equipment for Senior Citizens.

W.T. Colmesneil Library & Museum The House A Train Conductor Built

Jerri Smart hated seeing all the businesses and buildings that she had grown up with in Colmesneil disappearing one by one. Colmesneil had once been the largest town in Tyler County, but its history was going away.

So in 2002, she convinced her friend Billy Gregory, who had already secured the old Colmesneil train depot and had been collecting railroad memorabilia for some time, to go in with her to buy the the oldest house still standing, the decaying home of W. T. Colmesneil, the conductor on the first railroad train that came through the area and the person for whom the town was named.

The house was a mess, but four years, and a lot of work (and help from volunteers) later, the home was ready for the grand opening. It is filled with beautiful antiques and small treasures.

The Colmesneil House is at 601 256 east from Highway 69, turn south on Pitzer and look for the sign on the right.

Think It’sJust Another Wooden Fence?

Take A Closer Look!

by Emily Waldrep If you have lived in Tyler County for long, you may have noticed the long, white fence on Highway 1013 between Spurger and Hillister. Just another wooden fence, you might think. What’s up with that? But, many people don’t know that it is actually solid concrete, and one of the longest solid concrete fences in the entire state. The ranch that the fence surrounds is a rolling 5,600 acres, and the concrete fence runs nearly three miles down the highway, as well as throughout the massive property.

Besides the fence, the ranch itself is actually quite remarkable. Many in Tyler County have heard about Timberline Ranch, but don’t know anything about what lies in its gates.

The main home on the ranch is an antebellum-type house with a large statue of a bull out front. The ranch has five lakes, all planned and built by the owner, Walter Umphrey. The lakes are large, and range in size from 15 to 54 acres.

Timberline Ranch also boast 1.1 million square feet of greenhouses dedicated to growing colorful, seasonal flowers that are shipped to local WalMarts and Lowes stores; 1,700 acres of cattle pasture and 1,800 acres of high fenced deer pasture.

Not many people get to visit Timberline Ranch, but those that do remember it for a lifetime and it is one of the most interesting and beautiful ranches in the county.

Just A Walk On Our Beaches?

It’s Really Much Closer To Home

by Emily Waldrep When people think of sandy white beaches and cool, clear water they usually picture Florida, California or another coastal state. The last place they would think of to find a slice of paradise would be Tyler County, Texas. But for years Tyler County citizens have been traveling to Sheffields Ferry, a large sand bar on the Neches River that has tons of bright white sand, cool water and a relaxing beach.

The beach is located down Highway 1013. When traveling 1013, turn on CR4445 and then turn right on County Road 4448. The road will lead you directly to the sandbar.

Most of the time, the river is safe to swim in, but use caution

because no lifeguards are available. Sometimes, the river is

higher than normal and swimmers shouldn’t enter the water

for any reason if they see higher levels of water or rushing water.

Wolfe Creek - Just Down The Road Down an old dirt road near the intersection in Dam-B, Texas is a timeless swimming hole that countless generations have enjoyed since the beginning of Tyler County. The swimming spot, know to locals as “Wolfe Creek” is located just past the Dam-B intersection on Farm to Market Road 92. The cool creek has been a favorite spot to cool off for years, and is a much beloved

gathering spot for citizens who want to take a quick dip and cool off. The creek is spring fed, so it is naturally cold all year round, even in the middle of the summer. When most creeks and ponds warm up under the sun, Wolfe creek stays chilly all year round. The creek also has an old rope swing that has been hung in a small tree near the steep bank for years. No one knows exactly

who put up the rope or how long it has been there, but countless children (and adventure seeking adults) have swung from the thick rope and into the deepest part of Wolfe creek.

When the creek is full, the water is about 10 to 12 feet at its deepest point. The creek also has hard clay banks and a sandy bottom. For years, people have carved steps and walking trails that lead

to and from the water in the clay.

The creek is also a favorite spot for perch and creek bass fishing, and those who frequent the spot say that gar fish are abundant in the shallow parts of the creek during the summertime.

The creek is fairly safe, but those who swim there should always be aware of the dangers of snakes and other wild animals that travel to and from the creek.

Bears And Cougars? In Tyler County?

by Emily Waldrep Now that hopeful hunters are placing game cameras all over the woods and spending a large amount of time scouting out deer stands and hunting spots many people have reported seeing mountain lion and black bear in Tyler County.

Some people don’t believe that bears and lions live in the piney woods, but Texas Parks and Wildlife officials say that it is possible for those types of animals to be seen in the area.

Historically, two species of bear lived in Texas. The American Black Bear lived in west and central Texas and the Louisiana Black Bear lived throughout East Texas. Bears used to be widespread in East Texas, but disappeared between 1850 and 1890. But, a majority of black bears still remained in the Big Thicket region of Southeast Texas. Sadly, most of those remaining bears were killed, but it is possible that a few were left in the Big Thicket in Hardin and Tyler County as well as Matagorda County.

“Currently, the status of the Louisiana Black Bear is unknown,” Texas Parks and Wildlife reports, “We do know that bear sightings in the area are on the rise, and hope that the population could be making a comeback.”

The East Texas Black Bear Task Force and the Black Bear Conservation Committee have both begun to create educational programs to help the bear thrive in southeast Texas.

Signs have been made and put up to help hunters identify black bear and some landowners have even created habitat that would help to support black bears.

Hunter Smith, a resident of Spurger, reported seeing numerous

black bears in Tyler County.

“We’ve seen a few bears in Spurger near the Neches River,” Smith said. “I’m not sure if it was the same bear, but I saw a bear on three different occasions near the river.”

Although bears are often seen in deer leases, shooting a bear is a serious offense and can bring some hefty fines or jail time.

Cougars and mountain lions also are frequently spotted in Tyler County, even though the big cats predominantly live up north. In 2008, a hunter caught a picture of a cougar in Louisiana and since then hunters all over have reported cougar sightings.

Chester Moore, a mountain lion enthusiast, says that cougars definitely live in the area.

“I have personally gathered well over 100 cougar sighting reports from Orange, Jefferson, Chambers, Newton and Jasper Counties over the last 15 years,” Moore said, “ Kevin Jackson, a resident of Lumberton, says he saw a cougar walking across a road in White Tail Ridge in 2009.

Some people also report seeing black panthers, but Texas Parks and Wildlife officials say that black panthers are just a myth, and people are probably seeing another type of large cat called a jaguarondi.

“It’s just not likely,” TPWD reports. “There is no such thing as a black panther. There are only black jaguars.”

Cougars usually roam in the late evening hours, and can be mistaken for being black or dark in color.

If you spot any of these animals in the wild, be sure to keep your distance and do not approach the animal for any reason. Reports sightings and game camera pictures to TPWD, and do not shoot or injure black bears.

One such spot is located just a few miles down Seneca Road in Woodville. For years, young lovers and adventure-seeking teens have been going to a large clay embankment down the old road to carve their names, messages and even pictures into the hard clay rock. The bank is about 12 feet tall at its highest point, and has names from 20 years ago still carved into its side.

Besides the names of lovers, a message of “Jesus Saves” can also be seen carved into the rock, and although no one knows the exact time it was written, people who frequent the clay wall say it has been there at least 10 years.

The clay wall is an awesome place to visit and read all of the names and messages carved into the clay. In recent years many people have scratched out fresh names in the rock surface. But, the clay wall is more than just a place to carve a name. It holds stories and a history of Tyler County that can only be found by visiting the wall itself and hearing stories of the names forever engraved into the red Texas dirt.

by Sandy Taylor Heritage Village, located on Hwy. 190 in Woodville, TX, hosts thousands of visitors each year from not only the surrounding area but from all the states and many foreign countries. Visitors even fly into the Tyler County Airport with arrangements to be picked up and taken to the Village. The guest book is filled with names of repeat guests who return again and again to bring someone new to visit this unique “hands-on” museum that encourages visitors to get acquainted with buildings and artifacts that reflect pioneer life in east Texas between 1840 and 1920.

Heritage Village came into existence in the 1960’s when Clyde Gray and his wife, Bill, lived on the property in the large white house fronting on Hwy. 190 that now houses the Railroad Museum. Clyde, an artist, had a studio in a front room of the house and Bill created a garden she called Heritage Gardens.

Not content to just sell his paintings, Gray began to add historical buildings to the land beside the white house. The first historical building that the Grays added to their Gardens was the Tolar Cabin, also known as the Tolar Kitchen.

This cabin was built in Hillister, TX in 1866 by Robert Tolar. When a larger house was needed, the cabin functioned as a kitchen for travelers and neighbors.

It is the only Village building with a medallion from the Texas Historical Commission.

The first historical building that the Grays added to their Gardens was the Tolar Cabin, also known as the Tolar Kitchen.

The Justice of the Peace Office was moved to Heritage Village from Woodville; it was built in the early 1900’s and sat behind the Rainey Hotel. It served at different times as the hotel kitchen, the hotel laundry room, and even a showroom for traveling salesmen to lay out their goods for sale. The building, donated by the Hensarling family, was moved intact to the Village.

The first Cherokee Church was established as a Methodist Congregation in 1860 in Cherokee Community, northwest of Woodville. By 1912 the building was in disrepair; it was replaced by the building that is now part of the Village.

The church was sold to a Baptist congregation in 1934. After 1986 the building was unused until 1990 when it was donated to Heritage Village. The building was taken apart, piece by piece, and reassembled at the Village. It is slightly smaller than the original church because of space available and because some of the original materials were damaged. Each year numerous weddings are conducted in this little white church.

The Railroad Depot was built with lumber from the 1890’s railroad station in Hillister, TX. It is smaller than the original building but all the artifacts in the building are authentic 1800’s railroad items.

The cantilever barn, built around 1860, was moved to the Village from John Henry Kir-

by’s home in Peachtree Village.

Next to the cantilever barn is a newer pole barn used as a covered demonstration area during festivals.

The Hamm House was moved to Heritage Village after it was donated by the Hamm family of Town Bluff. It was built in the early 1900’s. For many years it was used as a meeting room for some of the Village’s organizations. Two years ago it was enlarged to add a restroom and small kitchen. Currently it is occupied by Behind the Red Door, a tea room and boutique business, catering to Village visitors who want a light lunch.

The Blacksmith Shop, known as the Village Forge, was built by members of the East Texas Blacksmith Alliance in the 1990’s. This is a working forge and members of the group meet monthly to share ideas and make items for sale.

Other buildings in the Village are replicas, built to look

as buildings would have looked in a small town during the time frame of 1840-1920. The “main street” is unpaved and includes the Village Vidette, a replica newspaper office; a Livery Stable; Barber Shop and Bath House; Sheriff ’s Office and Jail; Post Office; Turkey Creek Inn; Lawyer’s Office; Saloon; Apothecary Shop, Doctor’s Office, Seamstress Shop, Tool Room, Dentist’s Office, and Pawn Shop. The Stewart Little Red School House sits on the second level of the Village along with the chair factory, and a display of equipment used during the turn of the century in various industries.

The Railroad Museum, housed in the white house on the second level, showcases numerous trains and depicts the importance of trains to the timber industry that was so vital in the early days of Tyler County and east Texas.

Another historical building on Village property is the Z.C. Collier Store, named for the founder Zacharia Cowart Collier. The building was built in 1863 in Town Bluff, TX by the Neches River. It supplied provisions for ships moving up and down the Neches. After the building fell into disrepair the materials were donated to Heritage Gardens. Using old photographs of the original, a replica building was built using these old materials and others that were available. was built with lumber milled from trees downed by Hurricane Rita in 2005 to house a collection of buggies and wagons donated to Heritage Village by the Panhandle Plains Museum in Canyon, TX. Presently under construction is a Fiber Arts Building that will house the Village Sassy Scrappers, a quilters’ group and the Spinners’ and Weavers’ Guild. This building is also being built with donated lumber and will include a kitchen and restrooms.

Why Guess?

Admission to the Village for tours is through the Manie Blewett Pipkin Building, a new building that replaced an older, smaller building in disrepair.

This building houses administration offices, a large Gift Shop, two permanent exhibit rooms, and a rotating exhibit room. The Whitmeyer Genealogy and Research Library, an excellent facility, is also located in this building. A librarian is available Tuesdays, Thursdays, and other days, with prior arrangement, to assist with research.

Beginning beside the Hamm House is the Big Woods Trail that is actually three different routes through eleven plus acres of the Big Thicket. Trails are less than a mile; trees along the routes are marked with identifying signs.

Each year Heritage Village hosts school groups from surrounding school districts and as far away as Houston. The Village is also popular with groups of senior citizens who come from Houston, Louisiana, and surrounding areas.

Docents guide small groups through the Village telling the story of each building and the importance to pioneer life. Demonstrators are present for these tours to “show and tell” about shingle-making, blacksmithing, quilting, spinning and weaving, candle-making, and other crafts that were so important to our ancestors.

Regular admission to Heritage Village is $4 for adults and $2 for children under 12. Admission is through the Museum Gift Shop. Admission prices to special events vary.

Featuring well-known storytellers as well as local talents, this event is rapidly becoming one of the most popular “things to do”.

often referred to as School Day because many schools attend to take advantage of activities including pumpkin painting, face-painting, and hoop rolling. Crafters from throughout the state come to show and sell their wares. Demonstrators instruct visitors on pioneer crafts.

Entertainment venues around the Village offer everything from cloggers and Indian hoop dancers to dulcimer and country music. Food vendors offer typical festival items for visitors who choose not to eat at the Pickett House Restaurant. As might be expected, the Village is decorated in fall décor complete with corn stalks, pumpkins and gourds, and hay bales.

Long-range plans include the addition of a syrup mill, lumber mill, water wheel, and whiskey still displays.

A summer “living history” camp for students and a small working farm are under consideration by the Board of Directors of Tyler County Heritage Society.

Heritage Village, located on Hwy. 190 between Woodville and Livingston, is open daily from 9-5 except for Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s.

Come to Heritage Village planning to spend a few hours because there is lots to see everywhere on the grounds.
