Like thousands of schools in rural parts of the Philippines, Geyah’s school faces a specific challenge: in her area the population is too low for the government to provide a full complement of teachers. Nationwide this is the reason thousands of children attend schools that don’t go beyond grade three or four and schools where teachers struggle, often ineffectively, with the demands of teaching multiple grade levels at the same time. By employing alternative education models, Geyah’s school has turned this challenge into an opportunity.
