Houston is big and sprawling, which makes sense because it is, after all, America's fourth-largest city. Its Museum District brims with can't-miss cultural attractions, its food scene is nationally recognized, and there's plenty of green space. Speaking of space, let's not forget Houston is home to NASA. But don't worry — we don't have any problems, just good times. Here are the top things to do in Houston for some Texas-sized fun.

Experience the arts in the Theater District – From the Houston is Inspired graffiti wall to grandiose theaters housing Houston’s ballet and symphony, Downtown is a mecca of art and culture. The Hobby Center presents hit Broadway-quality performances like Into the Woods, The Book of Mormon, and Wicked. At Jones Hall, listening to the Houston Symphony is a gift to the soul, while at the Wortham Theater Center, the Houston Ballet company puts on divine productions that will leave you wanting more. The Houston Grand Opera, also at the Wortham Center, is another delight. Going on its 70th season, the Alley Theatre company puts on performances of award-winning comedies, treasured classics, and international thrillers. But that’s just the beginning; there are also arenas for concerts, art and music festivals, and special events. Get out and explore it all.

Root for the home teams – Downtown, Houston’s epicenter, is home to three sporting arenas. At the Toyota Center, the Houston Rockets play to a crowd of roaring fans. For the rowdiest time, join the Red Rowdies in section 114. At Minute Maid Park, cheer on the Astros while you take down coffee-rubbed salmon tacos or a chopped bbq-loaded baked potato the size of Texas.

Immediately east of Downtown, BBVA Compass Stadium plays home to both the men’s Houston Dynamo and women’s Houston Dash soccer teams. Go Houston!

Things to Do

Need to get your nature fix amidst all those gleaming skyscrapers and miles (and miles) of freeways? Buffalo Bayou, the 52-mile slow-moving waterway and 160-acre city park, offers lovely views of diverse urban nature, along with beautiful gardens, hikeand-bike trails, paddleboat and bike rentals, public art, a dog park, and much more.

With over 65,000 works of art that span six continents, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston is among the ten largest art museums in the country. Be sure to allow ample time to explore inside and outside; the Cullen Sculpture Garden is sweetly serene. And, general admission is free on Thursdays, so plan your trip accordingly if possible.

A longtime fixture of the centuryold Hermann Park, Miller Outdoor Theatre provides free performances, concerts, and events to the city of Houston, making for fun nights out with the family or a budgetfriendly date night. Wedged between the Medical and Museum Districts, Miller Outdoor Theatre consists of an imposing, can’t-miss sloped lawn and rows of seating underneath the looming architecture of the concert hall.

Things to Do

Houston boasts a number of parks, including Hermann Park, Memorial Park, Sam Houston Park, Tranquility Park, and Sesquicentennial Park. The hottest two downtown, are Discovery Green and Market Square Park. Discovery Green boasts 12 acres in the heart of the city, with a small lake for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, two dog runs, a children’s area, and ample room for recreation. Hit it for special events, including magnificent light and art installations, stage performances, festivals, movie screenings, pop-up markets, group yoga, and even an ice-skating rink in the winter. The historic Market Square Park may be tiny, but with a Niko Niko’s stand, shady walkways, dog runs, and a packed calendar of events, it’s full of fun. Head here for Blanket Bingo, the Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow, outdoor markets, and festivals.

Dubbed “the largest urban park in Texas,” Houston's Memorial Park, just inside Loop 610 at Woodway, includes Texas’ top-rated municipal 18-hole golf course, as well as facilities for tennis, softball, swimming, track, croquet, volleyball, in-line skating, cycling, and a popular three-mile running course. In addition to the many trails the park is host to several softball/baseball fields, as well as a soccer/football filed. The park is also host to Houston's annual Bayou City Art Festival.

Top Restaurants MAD After winning last year’s Tastemaker Awards Best New Restaurant tournament, proprietor Ignacio Torras and chef-partner Luis Roger’s energetic restaurant in River Oaks District steps up to the main category. The restaurant has undergone a number of changes over the last year, particularly among its management team, and physical changes will soon expand its seating capacity while maintaining all of the elements that have made it a favorite spot for selfies. What remains consistent is MAD’s menu that’s full of both whimsical dishes that utilize modernist techniques and more classic fare that satisfies on every visit.

Doris Metropolitan Houston is home to many steakhouses, but none of them are quite like Doris Metropolitan. Instead of serving conventional dishes like creamed spinach and shrimp cocktail, chef Sash Kurgan draws upon modern Israeli cuisine to deliver a lighter, fresher approach of bright flavors that contrast with the richness of Doris’ dry-aged steaks. Pastry chef Michal Michaeli oversees some of the finest breads in the city as well as inventive desserts that utilize modern techniques in inventive ways. First-rate service guarantees that every diner leaves feeling like a VIP. Nobie's Ever since it opened in late 2016, Nobie’s has lured diners with its eclectic menu, creative cocktails, and friendly service, but its success transcends any of those individual elements. While it’s easy to praise staples like the Texas tartare, nonno’s pasta, and the “winner, winner chicken dinner,” the reality is that Houston restaurant professionals have made it one of their favorite hangouts due to its unique combination of food, service, and atmosphere — powered by its vintage stereo and all-vinyl soundtrack — that makes even weeknight dinners feel like a special occasion.

Surrounding Activities Traveling north of Houston on Interstate 45, you’ll find the entrance of Huntsville State Park 69 miles from the city’s downtown.

If you’re traveling south on I-45, the entrance will be 10.1 miles from the small city of Huntsville.

In both cases, you’ll exit onto state park road 40 and follow it into the park, where a ranger station is set up along the road to check you into the park.

With more than 2,000 acres to explore via the Huntsville State Park trail system, you’ll spend plenty of time enjoying the forest.

Visitors will find the trees and the trails that meander through them with breathtaking awe.

The park includes over 20 miles of hiking and biking trails within the park and has the added benefit of being connected to the over 100 miles of national forest trails located right next door.

The trails are designed with the shorter ones located around the lake within the park and grow longer as you expand away from the camping and lake areas.

Galveston Island’s Historic Pleasure Pier is an iconic piece of Galveston’s past that has successfully made a return to the sandy shores of Galveston. The current Pleasure Pier has recaptured her prior charisma that made World War II service men, tourists, and islanders originally fall in love with her majestic rides, entertainment, and beautiful illuminations dancing across the waters. The pier has brought tourism boosts, entertainment, and a classy feel to Galveston.

Ignite your curiosity at Space Center Houston, the official visitor center of NASA Johnson Space Center. In the top experience, the NASA Tram Tour, discover NASA Johnson Space Center and get a behind-the-scenes look at human space exploration. Tour iconic locations like Mission Control, Rocket Park - home to the massive Saturn V rocket, and astronaut training facilities like the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility.
