ABOUT ME

For as long as I can remember I have EDUCATION always wanted to improve the world that we live in, but I was never sure how I Major in Landscape Architecture would accomplish that goal. As I moved Ball State University closer to having to decide a career path, B.L.A. 2018-2023 it became clear to me that I was meant to Minor in Urban Planning be a landscape architect. With my love for Ball State University nature, I knew this career would enable 2018-2023 me to improve the quality of spaces for people and nature. Whether this be a EXPERIENCE downtown area, a neighborhood or a small park, I knew I had to be a par t of Louisville Department of Planning and this profession that brings these spaces Design to life.

TITLE SCALES PROJEGCT THE TIPPIN Today we need balance more than ever. Balance can involve many different aspects, including balance in our health, politics, and culture. Driven by a divided world’s need to find balance, Tipping the Scales invites users to come and find their own inner balance. The demonstration garden allows users to come together in conversation as well to isolate oneself and reflect.

A main path brings users in towards the crashing cascade that flows into the central basin. Here users are surrounded by beautiful prairie plantings and full sunlight. Adults can engage in conversation with one another while children can cool off in the cascade. Two paths radiate from the central plaza and lead to quiet and cool woodland plantings. Sunken and shaded seating areas allow users to sit and reflect as the noise of the distant cascade blocks out the world around them.

The cascade seating area and central plaza allow users to engage with one another.

The prairie plantings around them provides color and vibrancy while also exposing them to the sun and warmth, no protection from the elements. The sunken seating areas give users a space to reflect and be alone. This space is shaded and cool, offering protection and security. These two spaces sit on opposite ends of a spectrum, which forces users to consider the need to find balance both physically and mentally.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT The design team had the chance to meet with the Halteman Neighborhood Association and were able to hear firsthand the concerns and needs of the community. The adults expressed wanting a safe environment for their children to come and play. They also wanted the park to be a space where their kids can come after school and have an engaging environment for continued learning and socialization.

The children came and drew out for us what they wanted in their park. They wanted the pool back, which is currently run down. They also wanted areas to play basketball, football, and other sports. Some let their imagination run wild.

The kids drew dinosaurs, endless ice cream, crazy water fountains and tacos. Our vision of Halteman Park took all their suggestions and tried to make them a reality.

Open space throughout the park allows users to use it as they see fit. The neighborhood can host block parties, summer movie nights, and food truck festivals. The park can also be used for smaller events such as yoga sessions, outdoor classroom space, and birthday parties.

PRELIMINARY WORK

GIS Hillshade Study

ArcGIS was used to find suitable sites for the eastern red bat and spotted turtle.

The eastern red bat had a considerable amount of requirements: - 3 miles from wind turbines - 2 miles from major roadways - 2.5 miles from heavy development - 1 mile from medium development - Deciduous forest with at least 85% canopy cover that intersects with water bodies Spotted turtles had fewer requirements, the largest of which being a open water body.

GIS Slope Study Direction of Water

Three existing swales bring water from nearby farms onto the site. These swales are redirected into depressions where water is cleaned and absorbed into the soil before overflow continues into the next depression. Water is also directed from the road and parking lot to be captured and cleaned. The existing lake on the site has been expanded to capture more water before sending excess water into the Mississinewa River.

Elements throughout the site are inspired by the eastern red bat and the spotted turtle. Here the shade structure located in the bat wetland node is inspired by the sprawling wing of the bat. The retaining walls, which helps slow down water, is inspired by the sonar location bats use to hunt at night. These elements are meant to be both educational and functionable.

There are several great opportunities to view wildlife throughout the wetland and woodland areas. Visitors can stop along the turtle wetland node and overlook the lake and children can even play in the creek. They can stroll through the wooded wetland to experience the shared habitat of the spotted turtles and eastern red bat. The raised platforms offer optimal viewing of roosting bats high up in the canopy. Users can even come to the site at night to see the bats during their most active hours, swooping down over red lights to catch moths.

Housing Cluster Section Common spaces throughout the neighborhood allow the community to come together. Each housing cluster has a central boulevard that gives the residents a place to socialize and to perform necessary natural systems such as capturing rainwater. The common house is the center of the neighborhood, a place where the community can come together to eat, work, and play.

Berm Section

Natural systems play a large role throughout the site. The existing site has a relatively flat terrain that leads all water towards the creek.

The central boulevards contain swales that direct runoff into storage and direct overflow to the creek. The rain gardens at the south end of the site catch water from the north and infiltrates and cleans it before releasing it into the creek. The greenway trail sits above the flood zone, while the creek banks feature plants that are floodable.

Riperian Section The greenway hub gives travelers along the trail a place to enjoy the riparian corridor and to engage with the natural systems at work. The sculpture garden is encircled by raingardens and a planted berm, offering a wonderful space for children to play and adults to relax. The creek overlook gives users a shaded spot to fish, read a book, and socialize. The rest area allows pedestrians a chance to take a break and refuel as they continue their journey.
