“Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.”

This was our first ever project in Art 130. It consist of talking to a classmate and comming up with an interactive project for them based on your partner experience on campus.
The project consisted of engaging with a real person which changed the prototype to a more personal craft that was created. When I had to show an unfinished product to my partner it made me want to apologize and not show my partner the piece, but obviously, I couldn’t do that. The pace was fast and a bit nerve racking because I couldn’t think of an idea for a few minutes. Given what I learned through the experience, I would go back and (if given the time) to make my product better and not sticky, as well as try to make it look nicer and cleaner.
This project consist of using only dots and lines and creating a abstract peice based on words given. In this case, I used the words “longing,” “rejection,” and “opression. We learned how to glue paper so that it lies flat, do thumbnails, and as well as how to safetly use a x-acto knife.
I honestly have no clue what gestalt means, but I think it means to put forth your work/meaning, which is definitely something that we did in class. To make a well-crafted object was hard, especially when it came down to circles and having to do them by hand. I liked the amount of time we had as well as I came in on a Sunday to work on it. It changed my view on abstract thinking by having an open mind that I have to look closer to them. I didn’t necessarily think it was hard to represent ideas without illustrating them, though I definitely took inspiration from illustrations for the pieces. I would definitely use the thumbnail composition practice for more artworks in the future.
During this project we needed to come up with a 4 to 6 letter word and come up with different iterations of it using ink and stamps and having fun with the school printer.
I learned that letterforms are kind of complicated, especially when given only limited use and materials, though it was fun and reminded me of my grandma who did this type of art and other similar concepts. The next step I would do if we continued working with these letters is definitely find a different word and maybe different concepts than the ones I used.
During this project we had to create different forms of one thing. I did the hammerhead shark. This project consist of two collage peices, a geometric peice, a one line, and two artist based iterations. For the two artist I did Allison Bechdel and Soviet Propaganda Poster.
During this project I learned a lot about time management and how to use Adobe photoshop, illustrator and design to which the most challenging part was getting used to all three of those programs. I learned a lot about photoshop, especially when it came to shortcuts for the computer and will continue to try to remember how to do that and further learn more of them. If I had to continue this project for a year, I would add more sharks and maybe even color (if allowed), to show more creative flow to the piece itself and to represent more of my style of art works.

This is similar to our first project in Art 130. We had to create a breif based on a problem that we cared about and then we are assigned someone else breif. I did the problem of distracted driving, while my partner did the problem of the unoticed signs of Insomia.
For me personally, being limited to type, was not really challenging because I didn’t really overthink what I needed to do or not to do because the basic knowledge was already given to me through the brief. I used a lot of rhythm and opacity to give the poster a visual hierarchy by repeating words and using the opacity on my title to state what the PSA was about. The main skills I learned through this project was how to use it in design in a more effective way, though it is still challenging, I hope to continue using it for more projects.
