From the desk of the Hon. Secretary

I

take this opportunity to wish all Members “Happy Reading” of this Special Edition Magazine of 2015.

A lot of effort had gone into the publishing of this magazine. Datuk Dr Jasbir Singh Pannu, our Deputy President and also the Publications Chairman had in his editorial team some good people comprising of our club members who had all gone through many meetings and endless discussions on how to present this magazine to everyone. Kudos to all of them and here is the result! There is a good section within outlining some history of the Club and also much sporting news.

Our Club is almost 45 years old and we have been enjoying the same location ever since and may we continue

to be here for many years to come.

We continue to work for the lease for PJ Club and strongly believe that we will secure a form of strong tenure in the very near future. In that regard, we thank the IDC members and also members of past and the current GC for their efforts.

The GC had over the past 2 years, continuously strived to improve every aspect of service and also F & B quality for the benefit of Members. We have achieved quite a consistent staff force and for that the HR Chairman is thanked for his efforts. The F & B Chairman of the day is also striving to make things better for members, food wise. On the Social front, there have been quite a few functions and these functions always serve the purpose of enabling members and guests to keep socializing.

I’m also happy to report that our Sports Sections like Darts, Pool, Tennis, Badminton, Cricket, Hockey and Hash are all very active with events ongo-

ing all the time. The Sports Chairman is working on all areas to assist the respective Convenors and section members. There will be a major Interclub Pool Tournament coming up in December 2015 and this will bring much fellowship to the club.

Before the end of this year, we shall see some renovations works to the club being completed and the GC has also undertaken works to enhance other facility related areas such as new lighted signage for the Club and enhancing the Upper terrace area. We are in a prime area of Petaling Jaya and we therefore, need to ‘dress up’ a little better!

I leave you with some words which are hopefully, inspiring.

Kelab PJ also known as PJ Club was initially started solely for the staffs of PKNS sometime in the 1960’s and was located at one of the buildings near the PJ Community Hall also known as PJ Arena

elab PJ also known as PJ Club was initially started solely for the staffs of PKNS sometime in the 1960’s and was located at one of the buildings near the PJ Community Hall also known as PJ Arena opposite the Assunta Hospital. As it was not being fully utilised by the staffs of PKNS, the state Government on the instruction of then Menteri Besar Selangor, YB Dato Harun bin Haji Idris decided to build a permanent Club House to be used by the residents of Petaling Jaya and the surrounding areas as a gathering and meeting place as well as to socialize.

A site was found in Lorong Sultan between the Shah Village Hotel and the A&W. The task of putting up the building of a Club House was left to PKNS who put up a building at a cost of RM 250,000 on that site i.e. No 7, Lorong Sultan, Petaling Jaya and rented it to the Management Committee of Kelab PJ at RM 200 a month. The building will be used solely for the purpose of a Club House. The building was sold to the state

by PKNS sometime in 1981. The Club House was put up in the 1970’s and an application

was made on 4th October 1971 to register as a society with the ROS with an initial membership of 21 members and with a proposal to increase the membership on 1st October, 1971. The then President of the Club was Dato Tahir bin Hj bin Hj Abdul Rahim, General Manager, PKNS and the Vice-President was HJ Shaharuddin bin Ishak, District Offcer, Mukim Petaling.

The club was run by a General Committee comprising of President, two Vice Presidents, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer and seven other ordinary committee members who were elected at the Annual General Meeting of the Club. The President has to be elected from among the three government agencies i.e. PKNS, LBPJ and District office.

The Membership fee at that time in 1971 was entrance fee RM 50.00, Refundable Deposit RM 50.00 and monthly subscription of RM 10.00 and the fees were increased gradually in following years and now stands as follows:

Entrance fee: RM 5,000.00 Refundable Deposit: RM 300.00 Development Fund: RM 300.00 Monthly Subscription: RM 40.00 The constitution was amended sometime in the 1990’s and the club is now run by the President, Deputy President, Vice President, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer, Social Chairman, Sports Chairman, Food & Beverages Chairman and 3 ordinary Committee Members who are elected biannually.

As time went by, the members got together and formed cricket, hockey, football, rugby, netball and other team games. Indoor games like dart, carom, chess, gym, tai chi, indoor hockey, golf and futsal were incorporated.

Social events were also organized and it became a family club. Except for rugby the rest of the games are still functioning. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings a group of senior citizens known as the “EVERGREENS” use the facilities of the Club.

KELAB PROGRESS OF THE CLUB

I

n the early days, the club used to have a lot of social events like dances, family self-barbeques, sing-alongs, family tombola, children’s games, children’s parties, social games like hockey, cricket, football etc.

The Kelab PJ was in a predicament, when the Football Association of Selangor was interested to take over Kelab PJ’s premises for their own use.

The then Hon. Secretary of the Club and a GC Member approached the then State Secretary YB Dato Sulaiman Bin Amin to settle the issue. The then Hon Secretary and the Committee Member explained the situation to the then State Secretary who then agreed to call for a meeting of the involved parties for a discussion. At the meeting FAS representatives did not turn up. Kelab PJ represented by the GC attended the meeting.

The then State Secretary gave his views and after listening to our suggestions, he instructed Kelab PJ to give the keys to the old Billiards Room to FAS and this was done. The FAS did not make use of the room.

The then Menteri Besar Selangor, YAB Dato Hj Ahmad Razali bin Mohd Ali attended a dinner organised by the Kelab when he noticed the room was locked and not in use. He told the State Secretary to write a letter to FAS stating that if they do not use the room to return the keys to Kelab PJ and it was done.

Once this problem was solved the club started to do renovations and improvements to the club in stages when finance was available. Up to now, improvements have been done to the dining hall, the foyer, terrace, toilets and the bar. In the beginning of the year 2000, a covered-indoor court was added to cater for indoor cricket, indoor hockey and futsal.

FACTS ON HOW THE CLUB ATTAINED ITS PRESENT FINANCIAL STATUS

T

he Club had its perennial problem of getting its members to settle their monthly bills in time so that it could meet and full fill its obligations of settling its suppliers of food and beverages as well as its other bills but to no avail as many of its members failed to pay their dues within the stipulated time frame to enable the club to settle its dues (bills). Various steps were taken by the General Committees of the past according to the Club’s Rules and constitution by putting up their names as defaulters and later ceasing them but it was of no effect resulting in the Club always being in the red year in and year out.

The modus of operandi at time was members drank, ate and signed their bills first and paid later. This practise was going on all the while and the Club was in dire straits. The General Committee members had to bail out the Club a few times by advancing their own money to settle expenses incurred by the members to keep the Club in existence.

A detailed study was made by the then Hon Treasurer of the Club and in his report and statement of Accounts for the year ending 30th June, 1995 which he presented and stated at the A.G.M. held on 21st April, 1996 the following :1)The club’s finance was in a bad state because of the following reasons :a)The monthly income fell short of the monthly expenditure by RM 4,000.00 to RM 5,000.00.

This worked out to an annual deficit of RM 50,000.00 to RM 60,000.00. b)Delayed payment of monthly bills and bad debts compounded the issue further.

He offered the following solutions :a)Signing facilities on credit ought to be stopped immediately, instead members out to pay up-front cash for food, beverages and other facilities. b)To increase the membership urgently.

A motion to stop credit facilities to members was proposed by the late Mr. Leong Kim Leng (Mem. No. 1321) and seconded by the late Mr Toh Wood Leong (Mem.No. 1271). It was discussed at length at the said A.G.M. and the following was passed with 37 members voting for the motion and none voted against but 4 abstained from voting.

The following was carried:“In view of the current financial position of the Club it is proposed that all signing facilities on credit accorded to members henceforth be stopped immediately.

Members wishing to continue with signing facilities can however do so against an up-front

F & B deposit (Excluding your refundable deposit) towards bills to the incurred.”

Well everybody thought that our problems were over but it was far from it. Some members caused problems to the management by refusing to co-operate in the implementation of the up-front payment when it was being done manually. It become very successful only when the whole billing system was computerised about one and half years later when the members had no choice but to pay up when told to do so.

We still had the outstanding debts to settle and it was done so with the help of the then General committee’s members (who were holding office at that time i.e before 30th Nov, 1996) by advancing their own money.

The Club had no money to purchase the two slot machines when the license for them was approved by the authorities in 1986. A then Committee member namely Mr. Y.T.Chin (M’ship No 1127) advanced the club RM 20,000.00 to purchase the two slot machines.

The financial position of the Club was further enhanced when the slot machines on the advice of the department concerned was run professionally by a competent firm. An agreement was signed by the then General Committee on 1st Oct, 1996 with the firm for a monthly payment to manage two machines on behalf of the club. The 3 months deposit for the 2 machines was enough to settle the advance by the General Committee members and the Club’s bills leaving the Club in a very sound financial position. All the bills were settled except the utility bills of Tenaga and Waterworks which was not settled as we were paying by instalments and the balance of cash was kept aside for future use.

As the club previously had licences for 5 slot machines, the firm managing the machines was asked to renew the remaining 3 old licences and which they did in stages and club’s finances was further increased by the payments of the monthly contribution by the firm for the slot machines was increased by more than double of the initial amount RM 17,000.00 for two machines to a total of RM 38,500.00 for five machines. The above contributed immensely towards building the financial standing of the Club. At present we are receiving RM 65,000.00 a month and hope to increase the amount further in the future.

n our recent communication with Encik Sulaiman, Assistant Secretary Administration, Selangor State Secretariat, Shah Alam, I was informed that they will forward Kelab PJ’s proposal for discussion, to the Selangor State Secretary, once the Management Agreement for Shah Alam Club is finalised. This I was told would take 9 months or more to complete. The Shah Alam Club’s Agreement is currently being looked into by the Selangor State lawyers, followed by discussions with the Shah Alam Club’s principal members, approval to be given

by Selangor State Secretary and then only the agreement will be finalised. Only when this exercise is completed, Encik Sulaiman will pass on PJ Club’s agreement to the Selangor State lawyers. He has assured us that PJ Club, can continue with our current operations as normal, and we can also look forward to a similar agreement as Shah Alam Club. He could not give me a definite time frame, but is organising a meeting between us and his immediate superior, at the earliest convenience.

After 60 years,

Cricket coach Mike Nathan still won’t hang up his bat

ho says that sports coaches need to retire after 55?

Many of these energetic individuals are living proof that age is just a number when it comes to introducing people to the world of sports.

Veteran cricket coach Krishna Nathan Murugasu, popularly known as Mike Nathan, has been a sports coach for close to six decades. After all these years, Nathan is not about to hang up his boots anytime soon.

“I don’t seem to want to stop (laughs). Although I may not be physically strong, the spirit is willing. My muscles may ache a little, but I still enjoy coaching and demonstrating various ways to play the game to budding cricketers,” says Nathan, 79, during a recent interview at PJ Club in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

The septuagenarian is one of the most recognizable names at the club, having served as a cricket coach there for over 45 years.

“I still enjoy training players, says the 79-year-old veteran coach.” three groups of aspiring cricketers – aged between four and 12 – on Thursdays and weekends.

“I have always loved sports. My interest in games began at a young age. I played football, hockey, rugby, and flew kites. I developed a passion for cricket while in upper primary school and never lost touch with the game for almost seven decades. Cricket is an enjoyable game that helps improve agility and reflexes,” explains the jovial man, who served as a cricket coach at Royal Selangor Club Bukit Kiara in Kuala Lumpur in 2000.

In the span of half a century, the former teacher of SMK Sultan Abdul Samad, Petaling Jaya, has carved a name for himself as one of the few cricket coaches who introduced the sport to hundreds (if not, thousands) of students in schools where he was posted.

In the early 1960s, Nathan brought the cricket fever to Bruneians during his short teaching stint at Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College

in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei.

In his heyday, he also played for the Butterworth Indian Cricket Association. Besides cricket, Nathan was also a hockey player, having represented the Penang Sikh hockey team in the early 1960s.

During a teaching course (19651966) at University of Southampton in England, Nathan represented the university’s hockey team.

Despite the accolades, Nathan’s biggest joy is seeing children spend their spare time playing cricket or any other sports.

“Even if you don’t emerge champion, being involved in sports enables you to enjoy the game; it’s a healthy pursuit. There’s nothing more satisfying than knowing that some of my cricket players represented their schools, districts, states or country,” says Nathan, who served as liaison officer for umpires at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur.

at national and international levels, and conducted umpire courses. Nathan was one of the founding members of the Malaysian Association of Cricket Umpires in the early 1970s.

Nathan’s tanned skin speaks volumes of his years of experience as a sports coach. Despite long hours sweating it out under the sun, he has no complaints.

“Playing cricket is no walk in the park. It’s played in the open field under the hot sun. As the game lasts about three hours, players need full concentration, endurance, stamina and most importantly, passion,” says the grandfather of three. Indeed, nothing stands in the way of Nathan’s passion for the sport – not even a cataract operation in 2010, or a fractured collarbone sustained years ago. A smile lights up Nathan’s face when he talks about his grandsons, Jinendra Murali, 10, and Vighnesh Murali, eight, who share his passion for cricket. The boys train under his watchful eye at PJ Club on weekends.

“It gives me joy to pass on my sporting knowledge and skills to my grandsons. With proper training anddedication, my grandsons

can excel in the sport and hopefully represent the country. Once you have theright attitude, you can use it in sports, education and life,” says Nathan who is a big fan of former Indian cricket star Sachin Tendulkar.Nathan looks wonderfully fit for a man his age. His secret?“A simple diet, sufficient rest and regular exercise,” shares Nathan, who will be celebrating his 80th birthday next month.

“I have most of my meals at home. My wife Kamalethevi Alagaratnam is particular about my diet and we eat in moderation. I keep active with cricket activities and tend to my garden every day.

I’ve also cut down on smoking as it affects my stamina. I spend a lot of time reading magazines to refresh my coaching techniques and keep in touch with the latest sports developments,” says Nathan.

He advises retirees to keep fit and lead an active lifestyle. “Seniors shouldn’t idle away time. Even if you can’t exert yourself too much, try to spend time outdoors by going for walks. Better still, watch some sporting games,” he adds with a grin.

I left the club for sometime and later rejoined in 2007. PJ Club is a small niche club with good fellowship, especially among the tennis group.

To create better fellowship and make it more of a family club.

HISTORY CREATED - 1975! *As narrated by 1975 Hockey World Cupper & PJ CLUB member K. Balasingam.

Wednesday 8.15am, March 11th 1975. The Kilat Club padang at Jalan Pantai Baru. The reason Malaysia vs. Holland! The Kilat Club field was like a mini stadium yet the crowd was standing five deep. Malaysians from every walk of life present. The Star newspaper of the next day reported a team playing like “men possessed”. This was Malaysia’s finest ever Hockey Team.

The Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak Hj. Hussein and many Cabinet members were waiting at Seri Taman, the Tun’s residence listening to a live broadcast of the game on the radio. Tun Razak told his Ministers the cabinet meeting would start only AFTER the hockey game!

A hushed crowd holding their breaths, the sound of a hockey ball cracking against the inside of the Dutch goal board and absolute pandemonium!! The game ended one minute later. Malaysia 2 Holland 1!! Malaysia were in the semi-finals of a World Cup for the first time ever! The Malaysian cabinet held their meeting later that morning.

In the bus on the way back to the Hotel Merlin, the team Manager announced a bonus for all players and officials for this win. The players gathered at the hotel’s swimming pool area. They lined up, led by the Captain and winning goal scorer Sri Shan. Bala remembers receiving a bonus of RM 160/-, which was a good sum 40 years ago. As he went on to say, “pride and joy was very much more in the fact that we had played fantastically that day

to beat Holland, the reigning 1973 World Cup champions. In 1975, we played because we represented our country and all we wanted was to make Malaysia proud of us. We really didn’t expect anything else”.

The players received numerous platitudes for their supreme efforts. Tun Razak hosted the entire team to a dinner at the Lake Club on April 9th 1975. For each member of the team, a very well-deserved solid Gold Omega watch. Indeed some of the proudest moments ever in Malaysian hockey history!

HR Chairman’s Update

G

reetings to all Members from the HR Chairman.

I have been in this post now for almost a year and I thank all those Members who have given their positive feedback and input on Staff issues and areas.

Human Resources is all about “managing human resources & human value”! This may seem an obvious statement but I have observed that it is also one of the most difficult things to do. Dealing with staff is always a

delicate balance of motivation, encouragement, resourcefulness, gratitude, attitude and constant adjustment! Thankfully we at PJ Club are spared many problems as we have an excellent allround staff force.

Members will know that almost all our waiters and Captains are there to serve us well and they do so with smiling faces, a good positive attitude and cheerfulness always. Sometimes staff members may make mistakes in taking orders or even get drinks mixed up! However the onus is surely on members to be under-

standing as everyone is human and occasionally mistakes happen. This is common not only in the service sector but in probably every profession or industry. Therefore, an understanding member will always lend encouragement to our staff and I know that there are so many club members who are ever willing to be

patient and allow themselves to be well served!

This year, we introduced a system of KPI’s for all our Staff and they have all accepted this system openly and we can see that’s service levels are reaching a good degree. Staff turnover is also not as high as in other larger clubs. That proves we are on the right track!

We had a successful Staff Night earlier this year with a very good turnout by Members also. There was much interaction and good cheer between our members and our staff at this function.

I ask that Members look after our staff well and they in turn, will always serve you well!

Facilities News

O

ur Club has is approximately 44 years old this year!

Not as old as other well-known Clubs in Malaysia and the region but we are nevertheless getting older too.

Having said that, continual improvement in Facilities is the order of the day.

With many worthwhile improvements that are to be implemented at PJ Club, we somewhat have to give thought to the priorities in our decision making process. Often, the tackling of minor but important issues have to be initiated without lengthy discussions and deliberations.

In the bumpy eight months now since I have been the Facilities Chairman, Members may not have seen or felt the impact of visibly noticed changes. We urge some patience as we have many building and facilities plans already ongoing and with some in place for 2016 also.

We have on the cards, the following plans in place: Renovations to the front façade of the club, renovation of the Patio facing the field, enhancing the Futsal & Hockey Terrace roofing, conducting badly needed waterproofing works at the upper part of the Club, changing of all the windows at the Club’s foyer area, installing brand new air conditioners at strategic parts of the Club and finally, changing of new neon lighted Signboards for the Club which will add much needed “light” to our Club!

My Facilities Sub-Committee has Club members volunteering much of their time and effort and in that regard, I thank Mr. Balbir Singh (Bob) and Ms. Nisha Amin for their untiring efforts to make it all happen! There are also many attentive and helpful members offering their suggestions as we alone may not be able to notice everything that needs attention. We thank you for that.

“Being Constructive” is the word of the day. We shall be delighted with that. We trust that you will place your confidence in us in giving our Club a decent improvement inside out.

On the social front

guidance from the Deputy President Datuk Dr. Jasbir Singh Pannu and the popular HR Chairman Mr. Gormage Singh had treated members to a night filled with timeless Punjabi Songs. The highlight of the night was the rare performance of the traditional village dances commonly performed in the Villages in the region of Punjab by the Malaysian group called “Village Girls”. This group was under the stewardship of our Lady member Madam Balwinder Kaur and it appeared that members were left in awe by the energetic traditional dancing performed by this group of ladies, not to mention their multi coloured Punjabi traditional costumes. What a feast for the eyes!

The upcoming Function being planned by the Social Committee is a 70’s Themed Dinner and Dance to bring back memories of the 70’s era, a Deepavali Celebration which can be expected to be filled with evergreen Indian Songs and traditional mouth-

n any Club, Members always look forward to a calendar of Social events which are interesting, has good music and provides an avenue to mingle with each other.

That’s all part of clubbing in traditional form.

In that regard, our Club’s Social committee under the leadership of Mr. C P Rama with the encouragement, support and participation of all the PJ club members have successfully organised a few Major Functions since this year began.

scrumptious western and local delicacies while the popular band The Small Stones played evergreen numbers.

The next Function organized by the Social Committee was the Chinese New Year Dinner and Dance held on the 28th February. Members and their guests were treated to a fabulous 10 Course Chinese Dinner.

The Social Committee had then taken the opportunity to celebrate Vaisakhi on the 18th of April with a “Vaisakhi Nite” on the 18thApril. The Social Committee together with its Punjabi members with the

watering Indian foods, followed by a Christmas party to spread the joy of Christmas and then a New Years Eve Party to celebrate all the success and improvement of the club for this year, 2015!

he objectives of this committee is to assist the General Committee to prepare and print material that needs to be circulated to members for their information eg. The Half Yearly Club Magazine, the Monthly Bulletin Kelab P.J. or any other publication the GC may deem necessary from time to time.

At this juncture the committee is in the midst of preparing the PJ Club “SPECIAL EDITION MAGAZINE” which should be ready for circulation in end of September 2015.

Subsequently, the committee will be involved in the printing of the monthly “BULLETIN KELAB P.J.”. In this endeavor the committee will need the support and input from all club members, be it a short article or jokes which will make this newsletter ever interesting to read.

Great players premier club in Petaling Jaya that has successfully engaged its members over the years in leisure sporting activities which inspire others’’ its members are able to enjoy on a daily basis.

Indoor games at the club include darts, badminton and pool & snooker whilst outdoor games are tennis, hockey, football, golf and cricket. The Club also has a well-equipped gym for its members use in improving and sustaining their health and fitness. All sections of the sports fraternity are active throughout the year with inter club matches, in house tournaments coupled with other activities to improve the fellowship and friendship between members. The Hashers have regular runs every month and participate in various runs throughout the country. The other notable activity is the CSR activity called “Tennis for the Underprivileged children” managed by the Tennis section which has been very successful in developing the tennis skills and supporting the educational aspirations of underprivileged children with contribution from members to the Tennis/ Education fund. The cricket section has an excellent children’s development program.

elab Pj is very much committed to its CSR initiatives and have over the years developed 2 very interesting community projects which targets underprivileged children and autistic children.

The 1st CSR project is the Tennis for the underprivileged children.

A CARING PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN” A FIRST OF its KIND IN MALAYSIA KELAB PJ TENNIS PROGRAM FOR THE UNDERPRIVILEGED. Kelab PJ believes firmly in its social responsibility towards the promotion of sports, focusing on the less fortunate children who we believe have an abundance of talent / potential waiting to be tapped and nurtured. It is also the club’s belief that stronger and responsible personalities are developed through sports. In instilling this sporting spirit and attitude through this caring program, we believe it will give added value to the children’s formal education, exposure and grooming.

We are confident that a better future awaits children through sports and we are proud to be associated with this caring program.

This was a noble idea mooted and supported by the Kelab PJ Tennis Section to promote the sport of Tennis to the underprivileged children and to give them an opportunity to learn and excel in Tennis.

All the children are from the Vocational Training Centre with age limit between 15 to 23 years. Initially session was for 6 months and later extended with the request of the Parents after noticing the children has improved tremendously and also keen to continue the exercises.

We see tremendous improvement in the children and this has attracted more parents to bring in their autistic children.

Kelab Pj is committed to this community project and will support the Gym section to continue this wonderful initiative.

This caring program was launched in 2007, and despite plenty of challenges along the way, we are now in its 5th year running.

The program is now running smoothly after revamping the program in 2011 and calling it the underprivileged program catering to 16 children from Light House children’s home, Bangsar, a home run by a dedicated Caretaker couple who are enthusiastic and committed to this program. The children are provided with free coaching from Ace Tennis Coaching Academy and we also do provide them with tennis rackets, attire, shoes and tennis bags and fed breakfast on training days.

It is indeed very heartening to see 2 of the girls from the home have done very well and are now placed 2nd and 3rd in the Selangor monthly tennis tournaments.

he golf section has 40 members. Generally the committee tries its best to have a game every month.

The following games were held from january- july,

2015 1. New year golf was held on 21.1.2015 At kelab golf perkhidmatan awam. This was followed up with the section’s agm held at the president’s room, kelab pj.

As the game coincided with the agm, the participation for the gmae was good.

2. The next event was the chinese new year golf which was held at kelab recreasi tentera udara (krtu).A total of 20 players participated in this event.

3. The monthly medal game for the month of april was held at kelab golf kinrara on 22nd april, 2015.

4. The monthly medal game on 24th june was held at KGSAAS. 5. The raya golf for the year is planned to be held on 29th July The posing for a group photo at Kelab Golf Kinrara.

he Hockey Section had it’s AGM in January 2015. A new committee was elected and the following club members were elected, as above.

Mr. Wong Choon Hin and YB Dato Sri Shan, agreed to put up a paper on junior development. It will start with schools around PJ. Mr. Wong has contacted Mr. James Moorthy, an ex-international and also a qualified coach to conduct training camps for school children. This programme is expected to take off by the end of August or by midOctober.The section has also played a number of inter club hockey games against other clubs, since March this year. ince the early eighties Kelab PJ has been involved in the development of Junior Cricket and has nurtured the programme very successfully. Our development plan for cricket has been to produce new talent continuously and nurture them to become State and National players. We have been encouraging youngsters between the ages of 5 and 19 to participate in this programme. Some of our Junior Cricketers have represented in the various age-group teams at State and

National levels. This is indeed a testimony “of the success of our program”.

Apart from the training programme we also hold regular meetings and event where the parents are encourage to take part and be part of our cricketing family. We have been successfully hosting BIRTHDAY BASH every 3 months to celebrate the birthdays of the kids born during these months. We also have organized CRICKET FAMILY DAY for the past 3 years which brings together the kids and their parents for a whole day with lots of fun activates for all. We have an very able committee who are very committed to our cause and contribute their valuable time in running the section.

Pool & Snooker in action

T

he Pool & Snooker Section (PSS) started off the year 2015 on a rather slow pace. The PSS membership stands at about 90 members. The club has one Pool Table (British) placed in the Foyer area, which also houses a Darts Corner at the opposite end, and a Snooker table placed in a special Snooker Room.

In January (25th), PSS held its Annual General Meeting wherein a new set of Committee Members (CM) were elected.

PSS Members represented KPJ in the Johor Cultural & Sports Club Carnival.

Instead of Pool or Snooker, American Pool was featured. Although PKJ-PSS lost, good sportsmanship and fellowship prevailed at the carnival.

saw more PSS Committee meetings and brain-storming sessions to get PSS into full gear and real action.

In April, KPJ participated in the Inter-Club friendly games organised by Melaka Club where a combination of sporting activities was planned. PSS took part in the Pool Games. Four matches each of Pool Singles and Pool Doubles were played. KPJ-PSS emerged the winner with a scoreline of 6 – 2.

In May (16th), a PSS Pool Singles Tournament and Fellowship Gathering was held to bring the PSS Members together. About 21 PSS Members participated while 14 of them competed in the game. Mr. David Amaldass (M/No. 2607) emerged the Champion while Mr. Shanmugam (M/No. 2568), the Runner-Up. The event brought the PSS Members together with good comradeship and good sportsmanship. In June (18th), the first ever (in the history of KPJ), an Inter-Section Pool Game and Fellowship was held between PSS and Tennis Section (TS). Special thanks must be mentioned to Mr. Rueben Anandraj Sundram (M/No. 1652), who is both a section member of PSS and TS, for mooting the idea. Eventually PSS won by a scoreline of 3 – 2. But the ultimate winners were the participants and the fellowship that prevailed.

June (26th) saw another event with KPJ-PSS

hosting a friendly Pool Game with Kelab Aman (KA). KA came with a contingent of 15 members and the support from PSS was superb. 5 matches were played comprising of 3 Singles and 2 Doubles.

KA emerged the winner with a scoreline of 3 – 2.

Both clubs enjoyed the game, food and sportsmanship. It was a pleasure having KA President Mr. Sukhdav Singh and KPJ Deputy President Datuk Dr. Jasbir Singh, who took the time to grace the event. In PSS, the Pool Game is more popular than the Snooker Game. So to build interest in and to revive the Snooker Game, PSS Committee organised a PSS Snooker Tournament on 11 July. A total of 14 members came together and only 10 participated in the game. Mr. Andrew Anthonysamy (M/ No. 2167) was the Champion and Mr. Tony Eng King Hoe (M/No. 1123) the Runner-Up PSS Members were exhilarated in seeing PSS com-

ing alive and roaring into action with activities and programmes. More is yet to come….A friendly game of Pool, Snooker and Darts with the Eurasian Club on August 1st •KPJ 2015 Open Pool Singles Tournament •KPJ 2015 Open Pool Doubles Tournament •KPJ 2015 Open Snooker Tournament •Inter Club Friendly Games with Royal Commonwealth Society; Selangor Coast Club; PD Yacht Club; PSS is embarking on a mega project to hold an Inter-Club Pool Tournament for KPJ. We anticipate having it in December 2015, the earliest.

Others on the cards are: • the formation of a KPJ Pool Singles / Doubles and Snooker League • PSS Family Pool Day and Fellowship Gathering With the activities going ahead at top speed, we hope to put KPJ in the limelight.

T

he Gym Station at Kelab PJ headed by Mr. Kumar the Gym Convenor gives personal attention to the Autistic Children’s usage of the Cardio Equipment. In the beginning the learning process to use the machines was difficult but after a couple of months, they have improved. With Autistic Children typically show difficulties in both Verbal and non-Verbal communications is poor. Undivided attention was given in teaching the skills to show visual support rather than verbal instructions. The focus in training basic skills on developing and enhancing more personal attention individually is needed with utmost patience.

All the children are from the Vocational Training Centre with age limit between 15 to 23 years. Initially session was for 6 months and later extended with the request of the Parents after noticing the children have improved tremendously and also keen to continue the exercises.

I on behalf of the Autistic children place on records our sincere thanks and appreciation to the PJ Club Committee Members for the support and assistance rendered so far and hope the same will continue for the success of our programme in meeting the Social Obligation and at the same time in meeting the Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR) of PJ Club.

T

he Kelab PJ Darts Section started to storm into action during the time of Rock Maniam with players like ER Mani and Thamby bringing glory times to the club. Though the section had only a handful pick of players but they somehow rose to occasion whenever the club sends a team for the Inter Club Tournaments. Players like Joe Maney, Thevendran, Clifford are the other mentors and are still in the scene today. They have

shown enthusiasm towards darts very highly and have been a solidarity pillar into the growth of the section.

Today, it is a difficult situation altogether and it is a NO SURPRISE that the section has over 20 strong players to choose from. It is also a NO SECRET either that the current darts section committee members lead by K.Ravindran, have kept the momentum getting stronger and bigger. The regular darts training days, the inhouse darts tournaments and the meetings of fellow darters have contributed to our dart section as a unified section. The Kelab PJ Darts Section have carried numerous trophies and have brought the name of the club in the international levels.

FUN, LAUGHTER AND FRIENDS are all that matters when clubbing. Perhaps that is why new members are joining the club and good darters join the dart section.

he month of June 2015 was a good month.

•The regular play of tennis on Mondays, Wednesday’s, Thursdays and Saturdays continues with good support from all the active tennis members.

•We had several activities and they are follows : 1.Lord’s Taverners Charity Event – 14th of June 2015 The lord’s Taverners club of Malaysia organized a charity cricket and tennis match which was held on the 14th of June 2015 at the Royal Selangor club premises.

Mr. Chris Syer who is a member of both kelab Pj and Royal Selangor club was instrumental in making this event a reality and was the organizing chairman of the event. Mr. Asokumar, Mr. Sivanathan and Mr. Gopi Pillay of the tennis section were in the committee to assist Mr. Chris Syer. Mr. Ravi Kana, the Vice president of kelab Pj made the day more joyous with his brand of music. Mr. Chris Syer was very impressed with the CSR Project called Tennis for the underprivileged children which is managed by the Tennis section of kelab pj and wanted to do something to help raise funds for the children of Lighthouse home. The tennis section of kelab Pj has been running this CSR project for the last 7 years and have focused on developing the Tennis skills and also help in their education of the children of lighthouse home from Bangsar. The event was held on the 14th of June 2015 and started off with the cricket match at 10am and the tennis matches started at 2pm. The cricket match was between Kelawar club and Royal Selangor club. The tennis matches were between Kelab PJ and Royal Selangor club. After the matches were over, a high tea reception was held and attended by all the children of the 36 | Kelab PJ Special Edition Magazine 2015

lighthouse home and also all the cricketers, tennis players and guests. The high tea was held at the Dewan Hamzah. There was music and dance, luck draws and auction of paintings done by the children of the lighthouse home. The event was a great success and Lord Taverners were able to donate a total of RM25, 000.00 to the lighthouse home.

2. Inter section games WE had for the first time a inter section fellowship, where the Tennis section and the pool section got together to play pool against each other. It was a very good event and the pool games were very close and keenly contested. The pool section won 3-2. It was also a good night with fellowship and good food and drinks. The event was held on the 18th of June 2015.

3. American doubles tournament We had our 2Nd American doubles tournament on the 25th of June 2015. The matches started at 4.30pm and finished by 7 pm and was followed by dinner and fellowship among the tennis section members and guests. We also celebrated the birthdays of all the members who have their birthdays in the 2nd quarter of the year.

PROTOCOLS FOR MEMBERS VISITING AFFILIATED CLUBS PJ Club Members are always encouraged to visit any of our Affiliate Clubs as listed on the AFFILIATED CLUBS LIST here.

However, to avoid miscommunication or any unwanted issues, it’s always best to follow the following simple “do’s & don’t’s” as stated here. Always carry your PJ Club membership Card with you. Just pick up the Member’s introduction Card from our KPJ office as well. This card will carry your name, number, the name of the club you will visit and also the date/s applicable.

-Some clubs have different rules for payment of F & B. The affiliate clubs do not accept signing facilities any longer However, almost all our affiliated clubs nowadays go by either:-Sale of Coupons -Payment by cash or credit card at close of bill. For affiliate clubs with rooms, it’s safer to always just call ahead, introduce yourself and check on room availability. To check which clubs have rooms, just consult the KPJ office. Members will always be required to conform to the rules, byelaws and protocols on dressing at each affiliated club. Generally most affiliated clubs will keep all their available facilities open for visiting members. This would be for usage of the bar, dining, gym, swimming pool, tennis courts etc.

It has been the experience of the older members that all the affiliated clubs we maintain links with are mist friendly, welcome and hospitable to PJ Club members.
