We Are Volos' EvS I (WAVES I) is KEKPA-DIEKs project under Erasmus+ 2014-20 programme ▸ Key Action (KA) 1 ▸ Mobility of Youth ▸ European Voluntary Service (EVS) (project code: 2016-3-EL02KA105-002832) that runs from 01 March 2017 until 31 May 2018. The project runs in Volos city, Greece and it is coordinated by KEKPA-DIEK (as a Coordinating organisation - CO).

Carnival party In February (2018) there are carnivals, like everyone knows. In Volos there are celebrations in several places. To these celebrations, people put costumes on. One day while I was working in KEKPA-DIEKs kindergarten, the educators invited me to a party with a condition of putting a costume on !

A few hours before the party, I was looking for something to wear and the truth is that I didn’t have many choices. I took a lot of clothes of all colours and pretended to be a clown. When I arrived at the kindergarten, I changed the clothes and one educator gave me a clown hat. The others were laughing when they saw that I was wearing shoes of different colours and actually everything in different colours.

All the children and some parents were coming with costumes on. Each one wore a different costume.

Because there was no theme, you could be whatever you wanted. There were superheroes, Disney characters, pirates, chefs, etc.

The educators had prepared games between the parents and the children. It was fun to see them playing. The children were laughing and having fun. I saw how the parents looked at their children proudly.

After the games the educators and the parents were bringing food that they had made at home or that they had bought. We ate together from a free buffet and the truth is that the food was very good. It was nice to have the opportunity to try traditional Greek things.

After the party I was with all the teachers and I began to notice that my departure is getting close. I felt that I will miss everything: the children, the educators and everything I have done this year. Then I realised that I don’t have to be sad about that but I have to be very happy to have experienced all this with the people I've met.

Finally the only thing I can say about this evening is that it was magical, to see so many emotions together.

Learning Greek language We had heard many things about Greek language before arriving to Greece. Maybe the sentence that described the Greek language for us was ”It’s all Greek to me”. Learning the alphabets seemed impossible !

After a few days of learning we started to read signs and other texts what we could find on the streets of Volos. By doing this we noticed that there are some similar words in Greek and in English or Spanish.

In the workplaces of KEKPA-DIEK there were always people who didn’t speak English. By listening to these conversations we learned the basic phrases of the language. We wanted to speak also with people who didn’t speak English so we started to use them. It made them so happy when we spoke their language with them. Especially people with disabilities in KEKPA-DIEKs relevant centres seemed excited.

In the afternoon we joined the English classes of the Roma youth. In there we were learning how to read and write the language. There were also people who didn’t speak English very well so every time we went there, we had to speak Greek and use the words we had just learned. In a couple of months we learned a lot of basic things about the language and didn’t feel so tourists anymore.

After the summer we started to participate in the University of Thessaly’s Greek classes that were made for Erasmus+ students. In there we made some new friends and met people who were in the same level in Greek language with us. We learned basic dialogues for example how to order in a restaurant or how to buy bus tickets.

After all these lessons we had, now we are both in a level where we can read, write and understand the language pretty well. The online course in OLS-Online Linguistic Support gave us also a help. I (Severi) got really excited about the language and started to spend my free time studying it. Now I can read and write much better. I can understand what is the subject in most of the conversations I hear and I can also speak the language although it’s still sometimes a bit slow. While travelling in Bulgaria I even communicated with a taxi driver in Greek because his English wasn’t so good. After the start the learning got much easier for both of us

The affects of other volunteers We still remember the moment when we met each other for the first time at the airport in Athens almost a year ago (April 2017). Just hours before we had been in our home countries with our families. It felt so strange but exciting at the same time. We felt like this is a start of something great. We arrived to Volos together and for a month it was only two of us (Severi and Cynthia). At the beginning we had a huge language barrier but after going to same workplaces of KEKPA-DIEK and also spending almost all free time together, we started to understand each other.

When Sara (end of April 2017) and Iris (May 2017) arrived, we were so excited to have new faces in our group. We spent time together although they were a bit older than us.

After some time we got used to them and started to feel that our group has now four persons. We went to same workplaces and spent some free time together. We started to get to know the persons better and to learn more things about their cultures.

Now it has been a couple of months since Iris (November 2017) and Sara (December 2017) left back to their home countries (Hungary and Italy, respectively). After that a lot of things have changed for both of us. It feels very different now. We used to spend a lot of free time with the other volunteers and the rooms are empty. For the first days we felt that something was missing. The time was really flying. Also the world seemed a very big place: just a short time ago they were here and now they are far away in different environment with different people and work.

Now it actually feels a bit like at the beginning. We spend more time together only the two of us but also feel much more independent than before. We realised that some things have gotten easier. For example deciding things with a bigger group was more difficult than now. Also we have more privacy now, so we can spend time alone if we want. Things have been a bit more relaxing now.

Travelling in Greece To tell you the truth there’s so much things to see in Greece. The country is full of amazing historical places, educating archaeological museums, big cities with Greek culture, tiny villages with their own culture, picturesque islands, beautiful beaches, green natural places like mountains and national parks and much more.

Because of this, we have been travelling to quite many places during our time in Greece. Usually we were travelling with someone else, but all of us did at least a bit solo travelling also.

We had 2 trips all the 4 of us together (Severi, Cynthia, Sara and Iris): to Athens for on-arrival training in July 2017 and to Meteora & Mount Olympus in October 2017.

Like we wrote in Newsletter 1, we made a lot of new friends in on-arrival training. After the training we met many of those EVS people and made great memories while travelling with them, in Ioannina & Lefkada (July 2017): we travelled to Ioannina to meet 3 of our EVS friends, who live there. During our stay there, we met other volunteers as well. In the same night 4 EVS volunteers from Athens arrived to town. The next day we travelled to an island called Lefkada. We spent there travelling a few days with an EVS group of dozen people. Great memories!

Mount Olympos (October 2017): I (Severi) climbed on top of Mount Olympus (Mytikas) with 2 EVS volunteers from Portugal during 2 days of time in the start of October 2017. I had never been trekking in mountains before so a peak of 2,918 meters was a good altitude to start, haha ! I think I will never forget these two days.

We were also enjoying the beaches of Skiathos and the city of Thessaloniki with other EVS volunteers (summer 2017).

Here are our the top 3 places in Greece:

Cynthia ▸ Lefkada

Lefkada has incredible beaches. Because it’s a small island, everybody know each other there. I liked very much when people were greeting on the streets every-time they saw each other. What made Lefkada better for me, was sharing the experience with other volunteers. I will always remember camping on the beach, watching the stars and hitchhiking there.

▸ Skiathos

Skiathos is a small island you can travel by boat or by airplane. It has beautiful beaches and a great nightlife. I liked the lifestyle there very much. Also watching the airplanes landing right over your head was pretty awesome.

▸ Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki is a bit different from the other two that I chose. Walking on the seaside in the evening and watching the setting sun lighting the big city breathtaking. There is many places to see but my absolute favourite was Aristotelous Square.

Severi ▸ Volos

For me there’s no other choice than to put my home city to number one spot. This place really is perfect: The size is not too big or too small. In the city itself, there’s a lot of places to go and things happening. From the city centre, if you go 30 minutes south, you will beaches. If you will go 30 minutes north, you will find yourself in a mountain full of nature. I don’t think you can experience this in many places.

▸ Skopelos

During the summer living in this island’s culture for a week made me realise that this place makes me incredibly happy. The people and the vibes in this beautiful island are something so fascinating so after the summer I had to go back. Meeting the people I met and seeing the familiar places again made me feel like I wasn’t a tourist anymore but a local.

▸ Lefkada

I have been in countless amount of beaches around the world. I think that the best ones are in Lefkada. Getting to the beaches are not always easy. Sometimes we had to walk for a long time and climb over of a big hill just to get to a beach. While running to the clear turquoise water I felt that in the end it was totally worth it. Combination of blue sky, white beaches and friendly people is what makes this island so unique

Travelling in the Balkans We both travelled also to other Balkan countries. Without travelling very far from Greece, we already saw a lot of cultural differences.

Severi During the New Year’s holidays 2018 I travelled to Bulgaria, Macedonia and Albania with an Italian Erasmus student from Volos.

Our one-week trip was full of sightseeing, visiting museums, watching landscapes and trying to survive the Balkan not-so-punctual lifestyle.

In Skopje and in Tirana the people looked quite similar to Greeks but in Sofia they seemed to have more Russian-like characteristics in everything. In there, the language sounded like Russian too. It seemed like ”Little Russia” and totally different from the Greek culture. One major difference was the traffic. In Greece, especially in Athens it can be chaotic many times but in Sofia I felt that it’s controlled well and working better. On the other hand during my trip there I felt like I am not really seeing the Bulgarian culture. I felt like there are things that are hidden behind a curtain. Next time I will go out of the capital to see more.

We arrived to Tirana, Albania after an all-night bus ride, where we couldn’t sleep almost at all because of the conditions in the bus. In there at the latest I realised that the culture is not like in other European countries. The whole place made me feel like that I had travelled far away from Europe. I think the biggest reason to this is that in there the dominating religion is Islam. The buildings looked also different. It was very visible that the country is not as wealthy as Greece or other countries I had visited during this trip.

Most of the people didn’t speak English but still I was able to get my phone back that I dropped in a taxi.

Cynthia I travelled to Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria with Sara and 2 Erasmus students. We visited Belgrade, Skopje and Sofia. In those places we spent one day per city. We focused on seeing the most important things in each one.

The truth is that the cities are very similar but at the same time very different. For example in all 3 countries the dominant religion is Orthodox Christianity, like in Greece. One difference related to religion, is that in there Islam is much more visible than in Greece. People went to pray when the bell was ringing at certain hours every day.

For me the architecture in the cities is almost the same. Bulgaria has a bit different style but still quite similar to the others, while Greece has much older architectural style.

In all three countries the currency is different. Everyday we had to change our money to another currency.

I believe that there is poverty everywhere but if I had to say in which of these 3 there is the most of it, I would say Macedonia. By looking at the appearance of the people, Belgrade and Sofia seemed to be a bit more wealthy cities than Skopje. I also saw that there were much more tourists in Sofia than in the other two.

We also experienced some other not-so-European experiences during this trip. The trips from a city to another were quite easy and cheap but a little bit strange sometimes.

In the first trip from Thessaloniki to Belgrade, while crossing the borders, the border guards inspected the tickets and passports with submachine guns. They also searched our backpacks. It was very weird for me. Also the lights of the train were turned off every time we stopped. In one trip we didn’t have a proper bus but something more like a van. The driver was speeding almost all the time even in small and bumpy roads. In the end it was a very busy trip but still we enjoyed all the cities and countries.

Tutoring in Helsinki for new EVS youngsters Severi

While volunteering in Greece, my sending organisation, Allianssi Youth Exchanges in

Helsinki, Finland, asked me to join a training as a tutor made for people who were leaving for mobilities to other countries. By coincidence it was arranged on the exact same day I would return to a 2-week holiday to Finland in August 2017. The training would start 12.00 o’clock and I realised that my flight lands at 14.00 o’clock. I told the trainers about the funny coincidence and that I would arrive there, but a little bit late.

I took the flight from Athens and landed in Helsinki on time. I had arranged that my mother who lives in Helsinki would give me a ride straight from the airport to the place where the training was being held. I put the luggage in the car and we drove to the right place. I arrived in the middle of the training and there was someone speaking about cultural differences.

Somehow I found my way in to a table full of other tutors without interrupting the training. I was sharing a story about my pretty crazy day so far: from the Athens’s morning traffic to being in this training only in a matter of few hours. I had been reading some EVS-blogs before my mobility so I could identify a couple of familiar faces in the group.

The trainer divided all the 50 trainees and 6 tutors into 4 groups. I was in a group with young adults going to EVS. There was also a tutor girl who had come back from her EVS in Italy just a couple of months ago. We thought that the people would have a lot of questions to ask from us but they didn’t speak at all. I actually think they had but they were so shy like most of the Finnish people that they didn’t have the courage to ask anything, ha ha ! The EVS time had changed both of us, the other tutor and me apparently. We were asking questions from each other and from the other people very naturally. After a while the other people started to get out of their comfort zone and asked questions about cultural differences, arrangements in the mobility country and many other good questions. I was happy helping other, similar-minded people.

After the 1-hour group conversation, I stayed there to talk only with a girl who was coming to Greece as well. I told her many things about the country and the culture. She seemed to be very pleased about this information. One photographer noticed our intensive and positive conversation and wanted to take pictures of us. We took multiple pictures inside and outside of the building. She asked me about my experiences in Greece and was fascinated about my stories. I shared contact information with both of them so we could share experiences later too. After all, it was quite exhausting but really unforgettable and amazing day.

Roma Exhibition in the Museum of the City of Volos One event in which we took part and helped in its preparation was an exhibition project run by KEKPADIEKs Romas Support Centre in Aliveri, N.Ionia. On Friday, 28th of April 2017 the exhibition "The old beautiful years: snapshots from the life of ROMA in Volos" took place at the Museum of the City of Volos. The organisers of the exhibition were the Department of Archives, Museums & Libraries of the municipal organisation DOEPAP – DIPETHE of the Municipality of Volos, the Roma Support Centre in Aliveri of KEKPA-DIEK, the Holy Metropolis of Demetriades & Almiros, and the University of Thessaly.
