PRESENTATION EVENING Saturday, 19th May, 2001 __This evening we have pleasure in welcoming our players, their families, friends and supporters together with a number of people who have helped the Club during the past season. __In the worst season for bad weather in living memory a combination of bad pitches and irregular fixtures meant that there was little scope to get any continuity with either training or play and as a result games were played in groups with more than a quarter of the League programme being condenses into the last five weeks of the season. These conditions also had implications off the field as revenue forecasts were disrupted by the postponement of matches and this together with the cancellation of two cup competitions meant a reduced number of games and overall that there was less income available for re-use.

Viewed purely on results the season was again a disappointing one: In the League by finishing in nineteenth position meant that we dropped one place for the second consecutive season whilst there was significant progress in only one of the four cup competitions that took place. A consequence of these factors

was that we played only fifty-one matches, the lowest number since leaving the County League five years ago. __Full details of all results appear elsewhere in this review but it is worth noting that of the twenty-seven defeats suffered in the season, ten were by a single goal margin and had those league defeats been turned into draws then the side would have finished in fourteenth position and further had the ten league draws also been converted into wins by an extra goal then we should have risen to eighth place. __We apologise if these opening comments are not the cheerful introduction you expected, however, neither should you be under the delusion that there was nothing positive about the season. Certain results gave particular pleasure in particular the 8-2 victory over Corby Town which ended the club’s worst ever run of results, the 4-1 defeat of Rothwell Town which went someway to avenging the record freak mauling they gave us away and, of course, the Boxing Day draw at the Pilot Field.

__We shall not single out individual players here as undoubtably those making the presentations this evening will have something to say on that subject, however, we must mention Keith Miles who this season broke Wayne Farrier’s three year old record for the highest number of appearances and as you will see in our records section Keith now holds both the club’s senior appearance and goal scoring records. __Unfortunately, we must return to the weather’s effect on the programme as we look at the second and under eighteen teams that started the season in our name. By January our under eighteen team had played just six league games having been stalled for over two months waiting to play a County Youth Cup tie at Arundel before that competition was suspended and eventually abandoned. After much heart searching, the prospect of a full programme of Sunday games plus a number of long midweek trips eventually forced the decision to withdraw the side from the Southern Division of the M.U.S.H. Kent Youth League: Undoubtably this is a quality competition which prepares players well for senior adult football, however, competing in it is comparatively a very costly exercise and our geographical position means that it involves more travelling than the second side would face competing in Sussex County League. __Similarly, the second team’s league programme was held up whilst they repeatedly tried to play a second round tie at Steyning Town in the County League’s Reserve Section Cup which they eventually won comfortably before going out of the competition in the next round. Notwithstanding the net effect was that by mid-March the side had played just thirteen of their scheduled thirty league fixtures. Again there was much debate when the League suggested that we might like to withdraw the side and the decision was only made when a further series of postponements raised the number of games to be played to three or four a week. The side had already

produced one regular first team player in David Henham and it has been pleasing to see three more of the side performing well when called up in the closing weeks of the season: Hopefully we can keep the talents of Daniel Beecroft, Tony Cornelius and Richard Devine as they all look more than capable of developing into good senior players. __In last season’s review we said that we hoped to be here this year to report on the progress of the ‘management buy out’; well, we are now that twelve months on and we certainly are still here. We have certainly learned alot in that time and have proved that the club can be run on economics lines.

The introduction by the Football Association of a financial compliance unit has started to reveal some terrible irregularities with clubs being found to have massive ‘hidden’ debts, thankfully we are not one of them. In fact we hope that we may start to benefit from these investigations since the compliance element will mean that all clubs will now have to pay their VAT accounts and all wages will be nett of tax and national insurance which has disadvantaged clubs like ourselves when some others have been making gross cash in hand payments. The season was the last of Stamco Timber’s term as main sponsors and we must thank them for their past help, we are now actively seeking a replacement who will join with Hastings Direct who this season became our shirt sponsors for the next two years. __In closing these notes, we should like to express our appreciation of the support given by our Patron Leon Shepperdson and of the help given over the past year by so many people. Once again, we are not going to be specific because of the inherent danger of unintentionally hurting someone by missing them off the list. Accordingly, we should like to offer a big vote of thanks to all of those that have been a part of the past year.

GOALS, GOALS Following the examples of team mates Carleton Chatelier, Adam Flanagan, Simon Fox and Craig Willard, Dominic Barclay scored on his debut but became the first player to record a hat trick on his first appearance, albeit he required extra time to do so in the first round Dr.Martens Cup tie at Folkestone Invicta.

His second hat trick against Rothwell Town was our third of the season, as Carelton Chatelier had earlier scored one when we entertained Corby Town, and our fifty-fifth since attaining senior status in 1989. Four members of the present squad figure in our all-time hat-trick table:

__The League programme was completed to schedule, well at least on the first Saturday in May, in all three divisions without the need for double headers, six point matches or two games in a day as happened in the Ryman League for at least one club. Margate duly won the Championship and are promoted to the Nationwide Conference and will meet Dr.Martens Cup winners Worcester City, who defeated Crawley Town 4-1 on aggregate, in the new season’s opener for the Victoria (Championship) Cup. Coming back from the Conference are Kettering Town whilst that competition sees an exchange with the Football League of two former Southern League clubs as Rushden & Diamonds replace Barnet in Division Three. __Relegated from the Premier Division are Clevedon Town and Halesowen Town, who are expected to go to the Western Division, whilst it is anticipated that Dorchester Town and Fisher Athletic will come to the Eastern Section. Replacing them are Newport and Chelmsford City together with Hinckley United and Tiverton Town. __Finishing in the relegation places are Bromsgrove Rovers, who four years ago were playing in the Conference, and Paget Rangers in the Western Division together with Sittingbourne and Spalding United. However, with the future in doubt of a number of clubs - particularly Baldock Town and Witney Town - only time will tell whether any will survive. Certainly there is no joy the other way as there are plenty of new applicants ready to fill their places: Favourites to come into the Eastern Division are Andover and Chatham Town whilst Swindon Supermarine and a Screwfix Western League side are expected in the West.

15 YEARS AGO (1986)

The first team finished runners-up to Peacehaven & Telscombe in Division One of the Unijet Sussex County Football1 League for the second consecutive season and in so doing registered a higher points total than the previous season’s champions. The Champions suffered just one league defeat that season and that was when they were beaten here in front of a crowd of 1033.

However, the overall performance was enough to gain the club entry into the Dr.Martens Southern League. Keith Miles marked his return to the club by top scoring with a record breaking tally of 52 goals some 35 ahead of second placed Craig Willard who then graced the number eleven shirt.

Defeat on the last day of the league season cost the second team the title in the Premier Division of the County League Reserve Section, however, four days later they retained the Reserve Section Cup.

The first team won the Southern Counties Combination Championship by a point from Forest Old Boys. The side also lifted the Hastings Intermediate Cup. Despite not playing a full season for the club, Keith Miles was leading scorer with 26 goals with John Cornelius second after netting eleven. The second team who could only finish in eighth place in the Premier Division of the Eastbourne & Hastings League did reach the Final of the League’s Challenge Cup.

10 YEARS AGO (1991) In only their second season as a senior club, the first team finished in tenth position in Division Two of the Sussex County League. In an otherwise unremarkable season the side reached the final of their divisional cup where they lost 0-3, after extra time, to Chichester City at Broadbridge Heath, however, this was their fourth match in seven days and their third game to go to extra time in five days! In an act of crass intransigence, the League insisted on their Good Friday morning Final despite our Monday night semi-final with Redhill being drawn and replayed on Wednesday and yet it was still only March! Peter Emmanuel was top scorer with fifteen goals. The second team finished eighth in the County League Reserve Section East and they only missed out on a place in the Quarter-Finals of the Sussex Intermediate Cup when they lost by the odd goal of seven in extra time away to Sidlesham’s first team.

20 YEARS AGO (1981) The first team finished third in the Premier Division of the Eastbourne & Hastings League and reached the Final of the Hastings Intermediate Cup where they lost to Hastings Town reserves by a lone goal at Bulverhythe. Leading goal scorer for the season was John Cornelius with 32 goals, Terry Henham being runner-up with twenty.

Another familiar face around the club was the second team’s top scorer, Colin Henham netting 28 as they became Champions of Division Two, losing just one of their twenty matches, to gain promotion to Division 1 (East).

25 YEARS AGO (1976) The club’s only side had completed their first season in Division One of the Eastbourne & Hastings League where they finished fourth of thirteen clubs, five points behind Champions St.Michaels.

Of the twenty-four league games played, the side had won sixteen and drawn two with eighty-one goals scored and thirty-one conceded. Matches this season had been played at Bulverhythe but this was to be the last year of Council pitches as the club’s ground at Pannel Lane was opened for the next campaign.
